Zōfi in the original Ultraman is a stern but sympathetic character who is ultimately more concerned with the whole needs of the many type deal
Arguing that since Ultraman has done so much for humanity they would forgive him for taking medical aid that could go to the human he merged with and instead using it on himself
However he is ultimately convinced by Ultraman to give the medical aid to Ultraman’s host and using the supplies meant for himself to save Ultraman
“Have you grown so fond of humans, Ultraman?”
Shin Zōfi meanwhile

Well his Leitmotif opens with the line, “In the beginning there was no forgiving, with malice unheard of, No heed for Redemption”

watching shin ultraman again and
Tumblr media
(spoilers ahead)
this is before kaminaga becomes/fuses/is ultraman. before it was revealed how ultraman joined with kaminaga, i thought this made sense because of course ultraman knows about the existence of "more advanced civilizations".
but kaminaga himself shouldn't. so then is this just weirdly prescient?

Hold up I gotcha. Firstly: Rising is just the latest adaptation, Ultraman as a whole first debuted in 1966. Since then there’s been so many shows that the Ultra Series now holds the Guinness World Record for most spinoffs of any TV show. Secondly: Pacific Rim was inspired by Ultraman in many ways and GTD is an Ultraman fan!
The most notable pieces of Ultra Series insp in PacRim: - the whole “Kaiju/Aliens saw Earth as habitable because of climate change” is a plot point that occurs several times in Ultraman, mostly in later series - Raiju was stated by GTD to have been inspired by Gabora, an Ultra kaiju, specifically the facial plates which open to reveal an interior head:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you want to look more into Ultraman, I recommend starting with Shin Ultraman, a film adaptation of the original TV series which involved much of the crew behind Shin Godzilla, including Hidaeki Anno as director (Anno is a lifelong Ultraman fan, directed and acted in a fan film in highschool, and NGE includes quite a bit of nods and inspiration). Gabora appears in it, with quite the glowup of a redesign (And- spoilers- An origin change to being an alien bioweapon, much like Raiju!)
I can also recommend Ultraman Blazar, the latest TV show. It’s available (for free, with ads, with multi-language subs and English dubbing) on the Tsuburaya Productions YouTube channel.
Have fun!
Sooooo Ultraman is just animated glorified Pacific Rim?

Your art for it is so cute, what's Kamen Rider SD? I want to get into it :D
yesss.... fall into my trap... mwhahaha >:3c (also thank you ^v^)
SD in general means Super Deformed, it's a chibi style that's not unique to Kamen Rider (Gundam also has a bunch of SD stuff, mentioning it here bc i love those models :3)
But since you're asking in relation with my art, here's the ones I made art for:
Tumblr media
SD The Great Battle
A series of videogames that's a crossover between Kamen Rider, Gundam and Ultraman characters, all in the SD style. An original character called Fighter Roar joins the team from the second game on. They're very fun and wacky game that don't really have a coherent plot but we love them for that :3 In IV they get a giant robot (Compatible Kaiser my beloved) and in V they're cowboys. I love the cowboy outfits so much. Games one to five have english fan translations, now I need someone to translate Gaia Saver because apparently that one has the Rider Killer lore....
Tumblr media
Kamen Rider SD: Strange!? Man Spider (or simply Kamen Rider SD OVA)
If you've been around the fandom you probably already know this one. It's a 30 minutes short where RX and the other Battle Riders (Ichigo and ZX) have to rescue RX's crush from shocker, with the help of the Mechanic Riders (V3, X and Super1). Wild Team (Stronger, Amazon and Nigo) appears for like. 3 minutes total at the end but they're my darlings and I love them. Other very important thing in this short is the Rider Carrier, a giant robot grasshopper that acts as their base and I think every version of the riders shoul have a giant grasshopper base not just the SDs u.u This short is apparently an adaptation from the Mighty Riders manga, but I haven't investigated it yet so I can't confirm that. It's also connected to a couple more SD videogames, Sortie!! Rider Machines and Run! Mighty Riders (the team names come from here as far as I can tell)
Tumblr media
Kamen Rider SD: Hurricane Legend / Kamen Rider SD: Legend of the Stormy Age
(listen. I know the direct translation is the first one. But the second one is on the back cover so if they gave it an official english title I'm using that :P)
This is probably the one you're asking for, but I wanted to use the excuse to talk about the other two :P
I'll be honest, going in blind on this one is probably the best experience. Do not look up panels you will get spoiled. The basic plot is V3 and Riderman travel around to recruit the other Riders to defeat Shocker. I want to talk about it more but again, I had so much fun going "WHAT!?!" while reading it that I must resist- Might post more about them but will tag it as spoilers
Tumblr media
Other SD stuff that I care less about, for completionist sake:
• there's a third SD manga (Kamen Rider SD: Roaring Laughs School) that I know nothing of (I think it's a 4koma gag manga? I'll be honest I'm not very interested in it so I haven't done much research);
• the most recent SD game is SD Shin Kamen Rider Rumble, a game for the movie, but that one seems to be simply a side scroller so again, no interest from me;
• Lost Heroes 1 and 2 technically use chibi-ish versions of Riders, Gundams and Ultramen, and are part of the Compati Hero series (the same series as The Great Battle), but they don't have SD in the title;
•there's. sooooo many sports games in the Compati Hero series. I like the Battle Dodgeball ones :3 Also speaking of Compati Hero, special mention to Super Hero Operations because that's the next one I wanna play, I get to meet Zubat, Metalder and a bunch of others there :3

Kaiju Week in Review (September 3-9, 2023)
Tumblr media
I was a bit nervous about GAMERA -Rebirth-; the animation looked dodgy and Netflix has a shaky track record with kaiju shows. I'm pleased to report this is the best entry in the genre that they've put their name on. Good characters, great action (brutal as always), and actual episodic storytelling that effortlessly weaves in elements from the Showa films beyond all the returning kaiju. Watch it immediately.
Tumblr media
Tie-ins abound for GAMERA -Rebirth-: a two-part novelization, a manga adaptation, and a prequel manga that sheds some light on [UNBELIEVABLY MASSIVE SPOILERS]. That prequel manga (GAMERA -Rebirth- code thyrsos) is being published online for free in both Japanese and English. You can read the first chapter here.
Tumblr media
In unofficial translation news, English subtitles for GAMERA.1999 (1999) and yokaipedia (2022) are now available. The former is Hideaki Anno's making-of documentary for Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris; the latter is a fun, child-friendly fantasy from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki with a big ol' centipede-dragon at the end. (It's also maybe the first Japanese kaiju film I've ever seen with a major Black character.) I haven't gotten to GAMERA.1999 yet, though from scrubbing through it, it seems like a lot of dialogue was just ignored by the translator. Shame, as that's one I've wanted for a long time.
youtube
We have a teaser for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as a premiere date for the first two (out of ten) episodes: November 17. (I am being showered with Media for my 30th birthday.) The big news from this trailer is that John Goodman is reprising his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island. I assume that's going to be through flashbacks and old recordings only, since he was eaten by a Skullcrawler in that one. We also catch glimpses of two new creatures, a dragon and a crab from what I can tell. The latter looks to be fighting a Mother Longlegs.
Tumblr media
Fandango and AMC have added mostly-empty listings for Godzilla 2000 on November 1. Fathom Events screened Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla on November 3 last year; despite randomly showing Tokyo SOS back in March, I gather they're making a tradition out of Godzilla Day. Note that the listed runtime is longer than the film itself. Predictions for the program: another message from Keiji Ota, the 2022 Godzilla vs. Gigan short, and the Japanese version of G2K. Interesting that they're running the last Toho Godzilla film to receive a wide release in the U.S. exactly a month before Godzilla Minus One has a wide release of its own here.
Tumblr media
Gamera isn't a meta-defining Godzilla Battle Line unit... but he's Gamera in a Godzilla game, so I've been using him in every match since I unlocked him. He's gearing towards demolishing flying units, with fireballs that deal more damage against them and knock them back. A pity that he's arriving well after those units were at their most dominant.
Tumblr media
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 still isn't giving me much to write home about, but the kaiju cult creeping to the forefront intrigues. Also cool to see Ebirah in a starring role.
youtube
Marubeni, one of Japan's biggest general trading companies, put out a bizarre commercial featuring samurai, zombies, a meteor, and a refurbished GMK King Ghidorah. The ad now has English subtitles, and you can watch a Ghidorah-centric behind-the-scenes video here.
Tumblr media
I cannot believe I have more Cleopatra Entertainment fuckery to report on with regards to their Shin Ultraman releases, but they're truly trying to take the "Worst Film Company of 2023" title from the members of the AMPTP. Their third attempt at a barebones disc is starting to reach customers... but the ones who already received the initial replacement disc are being told no more will be sent. @starestream is trying to figure out if they'll be selling the third edition on their site, since it seems buying it anywhere else is a gamble. (Physically, the third edition looks almost the same as the first two, set apart only by the "SUBTITLED" text on the disc.) Either way, it's another blow to a movie that truly doesn't deserve this.

Just got back from Shin Kamen Rider
And here are my initial thoughts: Wow! I enjoyed that a lot. Much like Shin Ultraman, Shin Kamen Rider is an abbreviated take on the first series of the classic tokusatsu franchise updated with some twists and surprising differences.
Tumblr media
I was actually not prepared for the opening sequence, which involves Hongo Takeshi's escape from the facility where he was turned into the half-man/half-bug hero. It begins pretty in media res with an exciting chase scene that leads to a surprisingly, almost shockingly, bloody fight sequence that would not be out of place in Kamen Rider Amazons/Amazon Riders.
There is a great amount of obvious love for the 1971 original dripping from the screen with classic villains reimagined (of course the first two foes he faces are the Spider and the Bat), music cues and updated but very classic technology.
Tumblr media
As with their previous two live-action Shin versions of classic Tokusatsu franchises, it is clear Anno and Higuchi are having the time of their lives playing around with the toys of their youth in new and exciting ways. Some of the massive standouts for me were the bizarre but brief sequence involving the Scorpion Lady monster and the brilliant new take on Hachi-Onna (Wasp Woman) who may be my favorite villain of the entire film.
Tumblr media
This an Anno film though and he cannot resist tossing in some truly weird ideas and getting incredibly introspective. I have heard numerous complaints about the weird Water Memory scenes from 2006's Kamen Rider The First and this might just one up that with one of the central conceits of the entire film. Mind you, this is a MUCH better film than The First with a much more consistent tone and more balls to the wall Rider action but you do have to take the odd mystical stuff with the awesome.
Tumblr media
This was a good way to round out the Shin Japan Heroes series (if this is indeed the last film of that loose grouping) and I had an amazing time. I will not say anything about the ending BUT if you do see it when it runs for its second showing on June 5 (and you should if you at all can) stay past the ending credits for a special 50th Anniversary treat.
Tumblr media
Ok, minor spoiler after the cut here... I just had to gush for a second.
They found a neat way to work in the Shocker Riders and it made me grin from ear the ear and cackle like a madwoman!

Who are your favorite fictional villains?
What villains have you created for your stories?
BEEN PONDERING THIS… i really like belos (owl house) as a villain and think he’s well written. in fe3h if you’re not siding with edelgard she’s one of my favorite “villains” ever (she’s also my wife. this complicates things as you can imagine,) and well. i think shakespeare writes villains that are extremely compelling LOL i love love love macbeth as a story
and they’re silly but i love the villains in tokusatsu… i know with the genre they’re often Monster of the Week type of characters but they always have such fun designs and are so so silly i can’t help but be so charmed by them. but then you get antagonists like zoffy (shin ultraman) whose grey morality is so sobering when comparing his feelings of humanity to ultraman’s…. ueueueu
FOR MYSELF… i think making villains is hard LOL cuz it’s so easy to toe the line into cartoony/hard to believe. i have anzu (frm tinder!) and kitty (pyramid scheme) as characters i consider villains, but they’re similar in the sense that when i think about their motivations and drive and opposition to my protags, it’s kind of the same wavelength: grief and anger. imperfect and human. alas i cannot talk more abt them without some spoilers lol

Ultraman Arc Movie spoilers
This comes from 809 so it's basically legit
Sascal (the dude from the trailer that wanted to test Yuma and Arc) is giving Yuma 3 trials to "prove" himself worthy of the power of Arc
Trial 1: Doggulf (Mugon) and Shagong
So Doggulf is a native kaiju like Shagong but was saved by a dude named Motoki and now sports a gentle nature
Trial 2: Gatura
This plant can actually take control of humans and one of the SKIP members was infected
Trial 3: Alien Repo/Repodios, GillArc and Zerogelos
So Alien Repo does transform into Repodios and is trying to steal something from the GDF
GillArc and Zerogelos appears to be working together to do the same thing so they are working against Alien Repo
-
So I suppose this would seem to be 3 episodes squeezed into a single movie, sort of like Shin Ultraman

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is just too cool I am a sucker for the grittier suit designs and biomechanical vibes AHHH he even has like moving mouth pieces and tail and his red form is cool tooooo
For actual villains I think I'll give it to Taiga from Kiva (Kiva spoilers below):
He comes a bit late in the story but I think he's a well written sympathetic villain and I'm a sucker for those.
He fits Kiva's themes of "breaking the chains of societal expectations and roles whose labels only suffocate those they are placed upon" to a T because all of his problems essentially stem from his inability to separate himself and his wants and needs from his duties as King. Despite being the King which should mean he has the freedom to do anything he wants all it really does is make him a slave to the title and it's so fittingly tragic to the story Kiva wants to tell.
Taiga is clearly just a guy that wants to love and be loved which comes from his abandonment issues and being raised by a man he DOES love (Shima) but he still just feels constantly rejected because even though Shima does care for Taiga all Taiga can see is Shima's hatred for the fangire race. The family and relationship drama is strong with this guy and I was HERE FOR IT.
They could have killed Taiga to contrast him and Wataru as people who could and couldn't break from their roles but I like happy endings so when they redeem him instead with the more optimistic messaging if how accepting love can change you for the better (which is another theme of Kiva being shown a lot through the OtaYuriJiro dynamic) I was quite pleased with the resolution of his character arc. The contrast still exists too because Bishop fills the role of "the one who could not break from their societal expectations"
In shorter terms tragic character who I just wanted to give a hug who felt perfectly fitting for the things Kiva wanted to say
Also Saga is cool, the fencer style is fun, his finisher is badass and Roots of the King is a banger

I have seen the new Knights of the Zodiac movie and must now scream into the void about this fandom no other English-speakers care about. General thoughts above the cut, spoiler-y thoughts below it.
In general: it's fine. Fun even. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you it's a masterpiece, but I'd watch sequels. I'd be interested to see how they interpret other stories in the series given what they've set up here.
It's basically a reworked, movie-original origin story designed to give Seiya and Sienna actual character arcs, and it does that. Pretty much all the weirdness comes from the fact that they're clearly using the Netflix series as the basis of deviation, not the original manga or anime.
Despite the multinational cast, being filmed in English, and everybody trying to talk it up as a "Hollywood" take on the franchise, I honestly don't think it felt like a Hollywood movie. Something about the pacing, editing and special effects reminded me way more of Japanese cinema, specifically high-budget tokusatsu productions like Gatchaman and Shin Ultraman. Which is honestly what I wanted so I was perfectly happy.
The central cast is great. I'd like to see them come back.
I liked the special effects and designs, personally.
They made some great use of music that was either based on, remixed from, or just completely new orchestral arrangements of the music from the original anime.
Sean Bean made it to the second-act climax before his inevitable death.
The choice to make Guraad, the military leader from the Netflix series, a woman, and also Kido's ex-wife, was a fascinating choice. But hey, it meant the movie passes the Bechdel test, because she and Sienna have this interesting, antagonist mother/daughter relationship that has absolutely nothing to do with the men in their lives and everything to do with the existential horror of humanity confronting the gods so. That's fun.
Marin was appropriately badass. I really liked her chemistry with Seiya's actor.
Honestly in general Mackenyu was a real highlight of the film? Him and Diego Tinoco both, they were great. Madison Iseman and Mark Dacasos were both more Hollywood-y, but they put in good performances, and once Sienna went full Athena the effects and performance were pretty spot-on.
Cassios shows up as a henchgoon and jobber. He's got an Ophiuchus tattoo, which was an interesting little detail.
But speaking of little details -- unsurprisingly, Nero is the one with the most interesting potential for sequels. He's the only other Knight besides Seiya and Marin that we get to see and acts as Guraad's "dragon" and mystical-stuff advisor throughout the film. They don't really explain what his deal is, aside from wanting to kill Athena and steal the Gold Cloth, so he could be there on Sanctuary's behalf. But at one point during their fight he says to Seiya, "Humans don't need any gods." And throughout the movie, he's wearing an earring that is super obviously Shun/Shaun's triangle chain. That has some really interesting potential for sequels, particularly in parallel with what they do with Seika/Patricia protecting Seiya.
Oh, and it ended with both Seiya and Nero shirtless and showing off their very nice abs so hey, kudos for remembering the secondary fanbase that's kept this franchise alive.
So yeah, overall: I see why it only got a limited release, but it'd sure be nice if it was popular enough in Latin America to fund a sequel. I've seen worse movies. This is a cheesy-ass franchise, I never get my hopes up too high, if it entertains me for the length of the film I consider it a success.
Still think it's hilarious that Sean Bean wound up here. How the hell did that happen.
