One that John is unlikely to get on board with, so it's going to take some convincing. Little does he know that John is discovering new feelings and this whole adventure may unravel more than just a killer.

I don't expect it to win but I'd like to draw attention to The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, because he is really quite explicitly gay in that
So, this Russian guy, Rogozhin wants Holmes to marry this woman Madame Petrova. He explains that she wanted to marry Tchaikovsky but discovered that "women are not his glass of tea"
We then get this scene (gifset here)
ROGOSHIN: You find Madame attractive or no?
HOLMES: Oh, I find her most attractive -- for a woman, that is.
ROGOZHIN: Then no problem.
HOLMES: Maybe a slight one. You see, I am not a free man.
ROGOZHIN: Not free? You are a bachelor.
HOLMES: A bachelor - living with another bachelor - for the last five years. Five very happy years.
ROGOZHIN: What is it you are trying to tell me?
HOLMES: I hoped I could avoid the subject. But some of us - through a cruel caprice of Mother Nature–
ROGOZHIN: Get to point.
HOLMES: The point is that Tchaikovsky is not an isolated case.
ROGOZHIN: You mean, you and Dr. Watson...?
(Holmes nods)
ROGOZHIN: He is your glass of tea?
HOLMES: If you want to be picturesque about it.
and then! Watson finds out about it and goes full panic mode, saying that their reputations are ruined etc, leading to this exchange:
WATSON: Let somebody start a rumour - just one ugly word - and we'll sue them for slander.
HOLMES: Nobody would dare. After all, you have an enviable record with the fair sex.
WATSON: Damn right. I can get women from three continents to testify for me. And you can get women to vouch for you, too... can't you, Holmes?
(He has a moment of realisation)
Can you, Holmes?
HOLMES: Good night, Watson. (He turns to leave)
WATSON: Holmes, let me ask you a question.
(Holmes stops)
I hope I'm not being presumptuous, but there have been women in your life?
HOLMES: The answer is yes.
(Watson sighs in relief)
You're being presumptuous.
(Watson's face falls)
Good night.
Which adaptation of Sherlock Holmes is the most queer?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*not including House M.D. because it's not really an adaptation, or any overtly queer pastiches like My Dearest Holmes or The Adventure of the Furtive Festivity because that's not really a fair contest

(Part of my "John and Sherlock's Kinky First Times" series of shorts, all revolving around the same basic theme of "John and Sherlock get sexy for the first time and also discover some kinky stuff about each other.")

Smutty headcanons that live in my head rent free:
Sherlock wasn't a virgin, nor is alarmed by sex; it's just that before John he had only unsatisfactory, meaningless experiences, thus he disregarded it as just a distraction from the work.
Sherlock has figured out Mrs. Hudson's hoovering schedule, and keeps those time slots free for loud sex.
Nevertheless, Mrs. Hudson does hear them sometimes. In fact, she quite enjoys mentioning it in passing the next day, and making them all embarrassed.
Once John has calmed down from one of his nightmares, a good shag usually follows. He finds it's the best way to steam out his stress.
For the same reason, that's what often happens if he had a bad day at the surgery. He doesn't even have to say anything: Sherlock can read it on his face, and immediately drops whatever he's doing.
If John "Three Continents" Watson is quite the horndog, Sherlock rivals him since he discovered that sex (with John) does wonders for his restless mind. Way better than cocaine.
Sherlock is also always too eager to experiment new stuff in the bedroom. It keeps him off of being bored out.
Speaking of which, since that infamous experiment which ended with lots of laughs and very sticky sheets, kitchen is the only authorized location for honey.
Safeword? Vatican Cameos, obviously.

Other people’s favorites 2018 - Long fics
As I was assembling everyone's picks for their favorites from 2018 that didn't end up on  my own Best of 2018 list, the post was getting longer and longer so I decided to split it between long fics (over 10K) and short ones. I also had to disqualify some that were mentioned as they actually completed posting prior to 2018 or were in another fandom. Sorry if it wasn't clear, this was only for Sherlock Holmes fics. All of these are BBC verse. I hope this helps you discover something amazing!
A Hundred Crimson Sols by elldotsee (55K, E, Johnlock) Will Holmes is a chemical researcher recognized widely for his contributions to the new Mars exploration program. Thanks to his ground-breaking developments, the IMMC (International Mars Mission Corporation) is one step closer to Martian colonization. Will and his team of scientists are headed out on the first of three manned missions before the first group of settlers arrive. Three days before launch, one of the crew has to be replaced. Will panics because...new people. The replacement is of course one John Watson, biomedical engineer and space hottie who was pretty sure he had retired from actual space exploration and was now content to work in the nice, quiet research lab.
A Walk in the Woods by Ginger_Cat (16K, E, Johnlock) After a series of traumatic events, John has left London in self-imposed isolation. Permanently. There is, of course, one man who might succeed in bringing him home.
All We Do Is Fall by vitruvianwatson (16K, T, Johnlock) There's obviously a very good reason for Sherlock to take over John's bed in the middle of the night. It's absolutely not just because Sherlock is a drama queen, no siree, not at all.
Beauty from Ashes by BakerTumblings (209K, M, Johnlock) John Watson, MD, is a freelance Medical Coordinator, who has been hired by British Government leader Mycroft Holmes to work miracles on behalf of his brother, who is suffering from terrible sequelae of addiction, failure to thrive, and unsuccessful rehab stints. Cue the headstrong encounters!
Chaperones by MissDavis (34K, T, Johnlock) Right. Of course. Everyone assumed they were a couple and no one would question it. John put his elbows up on the table so he could rest his head in his hands. "You want to pretend to be a couple so we can chaperone a trip to Disney World with Rosie's class and you won't have to share a room with a stranger?"  "Exactly." Sherlock beamed at him. "Don't worry about the cost. The Birmingham case last month paid more than enough to cover expenses for all three of us."
Enigma by khorazir (289K, M, Johnlock) It’s the autumn of 1941, war is raging in Europe, German U-boats are raiding Allied convoys in the Atlantic, the Luftwaffe is bombing English cities, and the cryptographers at Bletchley Park are working feverishly to decode their enemies' encrypted communications. One should consider this challenge and distraction enough for capricious codebreaker Sherlock Holmes. But the true enigmas are yet waiting to be deciphered: an unbreakable code, a strange murder, and the arrival of Surgeon Captain John H. Watson of the Royal Navy.
Extricate - An Ex Files Special by 7PercentSolution (231K, E, Viclock) When Sherlock met Victor, and what happened next. A backstory that explains why caring truly may not be an advantage. This follows ACD canon and ignores BBC season 4, allowing the two of them to meet while at University.
Fragile by Tor_Raptor (160K, T, Gen) Sherlock gets sick, not 'he'll recover in a few days' sick, but hospitalised for a long time sick. His friends are all there to help him, but he is Sherlock, he doesn't want or need their help.
Give It Welcome by Glenmore (13K, T, Johnlock) Rosie Watson is commissioned to write a story about memories of her favourite gifts.
Heart's Desire by 88thParallel (20K, G, Johnlock, Jolto) Reeling after a tragic loss, John Watson is surprised when he finds love again. After a lifetime of illness, Sherlock Holmes finally feels his heart truly beat for another. But as they move toward something more serious, an unbelievable truth is revealed that threatens to break both their hearts for good.
Hello You by weeesi (20K, T, Johnlock) John kind of can’t believe he’s doing this and kind of can’t imagine doing anything else. He dips his head, heart pounding.
Hiraeth by BiancaAparo (281K, M, Johnlock, Warstan, Mollstrade, Sherlock/OFC) Sherlock scowled, “This is the thanks I receive for coming to fetch you.” “I never asked you to come get me!” Violet shouted as he slammed the bedroom door...
Keep Your Eyes Fixed on Me by elldotsee (26K, M, Johnlock) Nothing to theorize here- Sherlock jumped, and all The Queen's horses might not be able to put him together again. Sherlock was gravely injured when he hit the pavement. John is by his side, but things are a bit not good for both of them.
Licence to Kiss by fellshish (13K, T, Johnlock) Sherlock loves John, and John loves... James Bond. He only made Sherlock watch every single film. Tedious. And now John's birthday is coming up. Sherlock can't tell him how he feels, but he can organise an amazing gift: John's very own spy adventure. Sherlock begs Mycroft for a real case with some extra gadgets. And perhaps some actors pretending to be criminals. What could possibly go wrong?
Rewind by All_I_need (87K, E, Johnlock and Warstan) About a month before John's wedding, he and Sherlock embark on one last case together: a murder at a remote hotel in the middle of nowhere. A lot can happen in a week. And a lot doesn't. But what if ...?
Sherlock Holmes, undercover lover by fellshish (51K, E, Johnlock) When the celebrity bachelor on a dating show begins receiving death threats, Sherlock goes undercover as a contestant to try and solve the puzzle before it's too late. Problem: he doesn't know how to seduce people. Who better than John 'three continents' Watson to provide seduction tips? It's not gay if you're helping out a friend.
Signs Following by Vulgarweed (24K, E, Johnlock) 1976. Bone Fiddle-verse; Appalachian AU. A couple years into their relationship, John and Sherlock are cozily setting up for spring with Mrs. Hudson's expert guidance when a distraught young woman appeals to them for help and sends them on one of their strangest cases yet - in order to solve one murder and prevent another, they must tangle with a sinister preacher and enter the much-sensationalized, little-understood world of Pentecostal Holiness believers who strictly observe Mark 16: 17-18.
The Darkness Within, So Close by shiplocks_of_love (42K, T, Gen) Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller deal with a new string of murders in Broadchurch. Help comes from an unlikely place as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson travel to West Dorset. But when the new crimes open old wounds and unearth the ghost of Moriarty, it becomes clear the game is not over yet.
The Dead Detective by DiscordantWords (47K, M, Johnlock) John Watson has spent the last three years of his life simply going through the motions. A chance encounter with a man claiming to be a stranded spy changes everything.
The Real Great Perfumers by shelleysprometheus (45K, E, Johnlock) The case, this case. This extraordinary, fascinating, scintillating case. A house. Designed entirely by its eccentric owner, built by no less than five hundred expert tradesmen in the heart of Marrakesh. A house that had, seemingly not only driven its owner out, but also to his quite unpleasant death. And a perfumer, a chemist no less, the very thought of the secrets that house could reveal, would reveal was irresistible. Sherlock had to have this case ... and it seems, he also had to have John!
The Subscription by delightful_fear (25K, E, Johnlock) John is back in the UK, but he's stuck in a bit of a rut. Some friends get him a subscription to add some excitement back into his life...
whiskies neat by Ellipsical (20K, E, Johnlock) Home and hearth and whiskies neat, or, alternatively, Sherlock Holmes falls in love.

This POST is so true. I believe that any sane human being wishes happiness to his fellow men (and even though Holmes-Watson are fictional characters, our mind interprets their emotions as if they were real, which is why we cry in sad movies/series/books).
I think it's natural to root for Sherlock's happiness, and it's evident that he loves and needs John Watson by his side to be happy (a little too dependent, I would say, when his happiness is conditioned to a person). With Holmes it is even worse, given that he is someone so rational and logical, considering that the only person he has really been attached to is John Watson, must torment Holmes too much when he is alone, after all.
As much as Conan Doyle insisted on only one thing when William Gillette was hired to play Holmes in the theater: "there is no love interest on the part of Sherlock Holmes" (contrary to what many adaptations suggest, he was never romantically involved, not even with Irene Adler).
Doyle, willingly or not, by making Sherlock "eccentric" and apparently Asexual opened the door to A LOT of speculation, given that he made Holmes a character who flees Heteronormativity (at a time when not being straight was punishable by the State).
But it is clear that over time Holmes developed feelings for Watson, after all why was he so cranky about Watson leaving him? When you are only friends, it is to be expected that the other will one day be able to marry. As Holmes does not congratulate him, it is evident that he appreciated having Watson solely by his side. Look what he says:
"The good Watson had at that time deserted me for a wife, the only selfish action I can recall in our association. I was alone". - Arthur Conan Doyle, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.
Watson, unlike Holmes, showed an interest in women. But I always imagined that her need to be with someone was driven by her fear of being alone.
In A Study in Scarlat Watson claims to have a bulldog puppy, however this dog is never mentioned again (if I remember correctly). Watson mentions in the first chapter how lonely he was and had no acquaintances in London and how much he enjoyed company, I like to think he acquired the little dog to assuage his loneliness and donated it to someone else as soon as he moved to Baker Street. Sherlock showed no problem with the dog when Watson mentioned him, but I think John saw no further need for the canine companionship.
In Sign of The Four we discover early on that Watson's father and brother died, both falling from alcohol, and there is no mention of his mother. And see that Mary Morstan is also an orphan of both father and mother and has no siblings. I like to think their relationship, part of their attraction, was because they were alone in the world and the desire to start a family was too concrete for people as lonely as they were.
After Mary's supposed death in "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" (as John is in mourning), Watson moves back in with Holmes, for years. And they fit very well together!! That is, until...
I like to think that Sherlock was already considering retiring, and Watson feared he didn't know where would fit into this new life for Holmes, who fearing would be alone again Watson used his "three continents Watson" beauty and charms to get a bride.
Watson strikes me as someone who hates solitude more than anything and did not want to be alone after Holmes move in to Sussex in the near future.
A funny/tragic Headcanon I have on this is that Sherlock and Watson never talked about it, but that Holmes wished his friend would go with him to Sussex, but as he didn't mention the matter as soon as possible Watson got himself a new wife, which annoys Sherlock, but he doesn't say anything for his friend's happiness.
I would say that in the books Holmes was very satisfied with his Asexual life, but it is evident, until Watson comes along and changes his life, he is at the very least platonically attached to Watson, his love is evident. But it is also apparently one-sided, the good doctor never seemed to me to realize that Holmes loved him more than a best friend, in his accounts...
The issue is that Holmes appears to be Asexual (with one exception for John Watson). And Watson might well reciprocate such a feeling, if only he were less blind -he sees but does not observe- and if Holmes had been more open in showing his emotions (recall that in the Adventure of the Three Garridebs, Watson is thrilled by Holmes showing extreme concern for him to the point of abandoning logic and threatening the "villain". This is to say that Watson was completely oblivious to the extent of Sherlock Holmes' feelings for him).
I get the feeling these two IDIOTS just didn't really get together out of sheer stupidity (in books).
(but let a girl dream, if they were involved more than friendship, Watson wouldn't tell us! Because he could not, in such an decade they was liable to be condemned by the law and be demoralized afterwards. Only years later did the relationship between two boys become acceptable under the law. I like to point out that Watson admires Holmes too much not to love him, and also his accounts are known as "unreliable" as he omits relevant information when he feels he shouldn't expose it to the public).
The resume is: We already have so many adaptations, and in almost all of them Holmes ends up alone! Like The original work/books! (Okay, so in the book, he stays with his bees... sees Watson occasionally. Technically, after the "His Last Bow, epilogue" we don't know what happened to them).
Like good people we just wanted to see them happy in the end, not lonely or distant (Sound like it sounds, I'm not a masochist, so of course I always wished that Johnlock could achieve happiness together, at least in some convincing adaptation).
You have to understand the reason I need a canon Johnlock in some series or another it's because in BBC Sherlock their unspoken feelings are making them miserable and then in the RDJ movies Watson's marriage is making Sherlock miserable and then in Private Life of Sherlock Holmes Sherlock's unrequited feelings for John are making him miserable and then in Mr. Holmes John got married and then died leaving Sherlock alone and in the Baker Street Irregulars John's unrequited feelings for Sherlock are making him miserable and then in the canon itself John supposedly leaves Sherlock more or less alone especially as they age and it's just like!!! It's too much homoerotic subtext followed by unspoken unhappiness. i want Resolution. I want Resolution!

Everything Else
The next part of Aftermath, and the rest of Sherlock’s story, with profuse thanks to arianedevere for the transcript of The Final Problem that made this possible.
Sherlock gave a short laugh, and kissed her lightly. “Yes. Alright. I suppose I’d better get it over with, now that I’ve begun.” He rolled off and made himself comfortable by her side once more, his face close to hers on the pillow, close enough that he could easily kiss her -- and did. Then he said, with a glint in his eye, “Never knew it would be so hard to confess.”
“Sherlock Holmes!” she said with a pretense of indignation. “You told me once that lewd jests are common.”
“Not when I make them, obviously.”
She groaned, tempted to snog him senseless, but she managed to say instead, “Enough. We need to focus. You say that Eurus was responsible for the Moriarty broadcast?”
“We believe so. Still don’t know quite how it was done, and who was involved. Mycroft will have his work cut out for him, attempting to sever every tendril of her influence. It’s almost unfathomable… but the evidence is there. As I said, she’d been coming and going from Sherrinford for some time. And after my… er… stay of execution, she began showing up in all sorts of places. We know about a few of her disguises because John and I were her targets. She was John’s new therapist, as I told you -- and we found the real one in the airing cupboard, just as she told him.”
“The real therapist was dead?”
“Very. For quite some time.”
“When did you discover the body?”
“Day before yesterday, in the early afternoon. John had a nine a.m. appointment with her that day, during the course of which Eurus revealed her true identity and shot him with a tranquilizer dart. She was gone, of course, when he woke up a few hours later, and he called me immediately. After I’d checked things over, we spent the rest of the afternoon devising a trap for Mycroft. John said we’d have to… well, frighten him. Before he’d tell us the truth.”
“But wait, the poor therapist? What did you do with the body?”
“Oh, gave an anonymous tip to the police. But the Mycroft Trap! That was the most fun I’ve had in ages. John, too. He really got into the spirit of the thing.”
Molly narrowed her eyes. “You seem entirely too pleased, considering the serious nature of all this.”
“Well, one has to glean happiness where one finds it -- as you know quite well, Dr. Hooper.”
“Yes, alright. What did you do?”
“All sorts of things. My homeless network helped, too. We knew it would be Old Movie Night, and went from there. Spliced in some old family films. Brought in a clown -- he hates clowns. Fixed up some of the old portraits in his hall gallery so that they bled from the eyes. You should have seen him! I really did think he was going to pi--” He suddenly remembered himself and gave Molly a rueful -- and silent -- look.
“Piss himself?” she supplied, not laughing,
“Exactly!” he said, sounding relieved. “And it worked! He came to Baker Street yesterday morning to reveal all -- and he got through quite a lot of it before Eurus sent that drone to visit us and blew the place up.”
Molly reminded herself that, in allying herself to Sherlock, she would need to be resigned to lighthearted accounts of near disaster if she were to retain any semblance of sanity, so she did not berate his frivolous tone, but only asked, “How did you all survive?”
“Jumped out the windows. Well, John and I did. Mycroft took the stairs and got Mrs. Hudson out. We were all a bit singed around the edges, and John skinned a knee, but the awning over Speedy’s more or less broke our fall. Eurus didn’t want to kill us. Would’ve spoiled her fun.”
“Of course,” Molly murmured. “What about her other disguises? You said there were several, that you knew of.”
“Ye-es,” Sherlock said, somewhat diffidently. “She came to me as Culverton Smith’s daughter, Faith.”
“That was Eurus?” Molly exclaimed. “You weren’t hallucinating, then!”
“No! That was something of a relief. I mean, I was off my tits, as you saw, but my brain was unimpaired. Wiggins really is quite a good handler. I need to send him a gift of some sort.”
“Yes, you can think about that later. Any other disguises? I haven’t met her, have I?”
“I don’t know! You very well might have done. There’s only one other that we know of for certain, and that’s only because she revealed it to John along with her disguise as his therapist. But it went further back, before Mary was killed. John met her on the bus one day -- young, red-haired, Irish. And friendly. She gave him her number.”
Molly stared, aghast. “He… he called her? Saw her again?”
“Nooo. Well he saw her twice, actually, but only in public. Other than that, it was just texting.”
“Just texting.”
“Yes! I mean… it is understandable. New father, dead tired and playing second fiddle to an infant? And John being John -- Three Continents Watson and all that -- of course he was susceptible to a pretty, flirtatious woman!”
Molly’s heart froze within her.. “Sherlock, do you really believe that? That it was… nothing?”
He stared at her for a moment, then said, “No. But that’s what I told him. That’s one of the things that made the situation with Mary so much worse, Molly. It wasn’t just that she took a bullet meant for me. He… he never had a chance to confess. To tell her he was sorry. Because you’re correct: texting is never just texting. Which reminds me...”
“Reminds you of what?”
An odd look came over him. Wary, perhaps. He said, “Never mind. Just something I need to do later.”
Molly pressed her lips together.
Sherlock said, rather desperately, “Molly, don’t be angry with John. He’s a good man -- but he is just that: a man. And all too human.”
She knew he was right, but still... “Yes. We all are, aren’t we?” she said, finally. Sadly. “Alright, go on. What happened after the explosion?”
“We regrouped. The Met and Mycroft’s people showed up shortly after the fire brigade. Greg took Mrs. Hudson off to catch a train to Devon and her sister’s--”
“What? Wait!” Molly broke in. “Greg?”
Sherlock raised a brow, and looked annoyed. “That is Lestrade’s name.”
“I know that but… oh, well, forget it. Go on. Mrs. Hudson went off to Devon.”
“And Mycroft had his people secure 221B, locked out the press as best he could, though it was leaked that we’d all sustained injuries, with his the most serious. By that time we were well on our way out of London. A helicopter took us out to the coast, and then we went in dark. Mycroft even donned a fairly elaborate disguise, which he quite enjoyed. Mine was simpler, but I did get to commandeer a boat. Sherlock Holmes the Pirate.”
Molly managed to refrain from groaning again at his gleeful satisfaction at this title, and was ultimately glad of it for it faded rapidly, and he turned quite solemn.
“From then on it was more of a waking nightmare. Once we got in, we split up, which was, in retrospect, a mistake. But we had no way of knowing how far things had gone. I went in to see Eurus, while Mycroft and John stayed behind to question the governor of the facility.” He stopped speaking then, and his eyes were distant.
Alarmed, Molly said, “Sherlock… it’s alright. You don’t have to tell me every detail. Or...or anything more. If it’s too much.”
His eyes focused on her again, and he took a deep breath. “No. But perhaps… just the bare bones of it, for now. Which is bad enough in all truth.” His voice was hard, with a bitter edge, as he continued. “Eurus had control of the place, and the three of us ended up locked in a cell with the governor. It was a multimedia event. There was a screen, on which Moriarty would occasionally appear, egging us on in his inimitable fashion. And there was a voice feed, from a phone call. A little girl, trapped on a plane, all the other passengers and crew asleep. Eurus silenced the call after a short time, and said the plane would crash, unless I would participate in… in what turned out to be a series of tests. Experiments.”
He fell silent again, and she prompted quietly, “Experiments?”
“She wanted to observe me… well, all of us. Our reactions as we made moral choices in life and death situations.
“In the first, she presented us with a pistol and said that unless John or Mycroft shot and killed the governor, she would kill his wife. Euros and the wife were there behind a glass partition, the wife... restrained. I was to choose between John and Mycroft. Ultimately, neither were able to do it, the governor got hold of the pistol and killed himself, and Eurus… killed the wife. Since the conditions of her survival had not been met.”
“Oh my God,” Molly whispered.
“Yes.” He took her hand in his, but his eyes were distant again as he went on. “A door opened and we were instructed to navigate a passage that ended in another room, smaller this time, and the walls splattered with what looked like dried blood, but with a large window overlooking the sea. The phone call from the young girl was connected again, briefly. Then, to earn phone time with her, I was given the task of solving a murder committed by one of three brothers, surname Garrideb. The gun used in the crime was there, a rifle, and pictures of each of the men. John and Mycroft were encouraged to participate in the deduction. Mycroft was resistant, though ultimately assisted when context was presented -- a bit more conversation with the girl on the plane, and… and the three brothers, hanging outside the window, bound and gagged. I was to condemn the guilty party. Which I did. But Eurus dropped them all into the sea.”
Molly bit her lips against further exclamation, but did squeeze Sherlock’s hand, rather convulsively. He looked into her eyes then, and moved forward, and kissed her forehead.
“The third test was the call to you. We were sent into a small, dim room, with a screen and… a coffin. The one John mentioned.to you. We were given another minute on the phone with the girl, and then Eurus cut us off and said, Someone is about to die. As you might imagine, I had no reason to doubt it.”
“The coffin was… for me?”
“It… seemed likely that it was one you might have chosen. That much could be deduced from the size and style of the thing. But the brass plate on the lid clarified matters.”
“W-was my name on it?”
“No. Only the words I Love You.”
“And… you knew it was me?”
“Of course I knew. You might never have said those words aloud to me, but our every interaction… all these years… it’s always been true. Just as you told me.”
His voice had dropped to an agonized whisper, his eyes closing, and his expression was so full of suppressed pain that Molly’s breath hitched on a sob as she whispered, “Sherlock!”
His eyes glistened in the dim light when he opened them again. “I don’t think I’ve ever done anything harder in my life. Knowing how I was hurting you. Seeing you, there on the screen. Betraying you, the truest friend I had in the world. But I had to, of course, to try to save your life. And then, when you told me to say it first... “ His expression grew hard, though a tear slid down his cheek. “I’m not sure how  -- or if -- I will ever forgive my sister for… for making a mockery of what should have been… a holy thing, just between the two of us. All these years I thought I was protecting you… so deeply important to me, and… and involved… and yet you had escaped everyone’s notice just as you’d escaped mine in the beginning. I thought you were safe because I would not surrender to sentiment. Stupid!”
And to Molly’s horror, he pulled her into his arms, buried his face against her neck and shoulder, and wept.
 *
She waited for him, lying alone in the bed after he’d recovered himself somewhat and stumbled off to the en suite. Guilt still ate at her, though she knew it was nonsensical. She could not have imagined the insane circumstances behind that call, and with everything that had come before in her bad day, she could not have reacted in any other way -- except, perhaps, if she had disconnected, in spite of his panic-stricken plea. And who knew what might then have happened. He might well have been convinced that she had died. The whole outcome at Sherrinford might have changed, and not for the better.
She sat up, wearily. Worrying about him. She pulled some tissues from the box beside her bed and wiped her cheeks. Blew her nose. Wondered if this had all been too much for him. This confession.
But then he finally emerged again, and to her infinite relief, came to her, a very slight, almost boyish smile on his lips as he laid himself down beside her once more and drew her close, so that her head rested against his shoulder. He kissed the top of her head, once (and she snuggled into him, hugging him, trying not to weep again), but otherwise he just lay still for a couple of minutes, holding her.
And at last he began to speak again, calm, tired. “I destroyed the coffin afterwards. Deliberately and thoroughly. Lost it entirely while doing, so.that John and Mycroft were quite shocked. All those complicated little emotions. Those were Eurus’s words. They did not seem so little to me at the time.
“John helped me up, eventually. Soldiers, he said. That was the word of the day. We went on to the next room, an elimination round. I still had the pistol, and I was now to kill either my brother or my friend, whichever I felt was least useful.” He laughed a bit. “Mycroft tried to get me to choose him by telling me the many reasons why John would be the logical one to eliminate. It was a poor performance, as I told him. But ultimately I refused, and turned the gun on myself, counting back from ten. That development didn’t sit well with my sister. It was the only time in our hours at Sherrinford that I heard her speak with authentic emotion. So it was tranquilizer darts again, for John and me, this time. Mycroft was stashed in her cell, and she, John, and I were transported to Musgrave.
“I didn’t know it was Musgrave, of course, not at first. When I regained my senses I was lying on a table in what appeared to be another cell in Sherrinford. There was a lantern, and some photographs attached to the walls, and I had been fitted with a wireless earpiece through which I was able to communicate with the girl on the plane, with John, and with Eurus. The girl berated me for my hours-long absence, and from her description it was apparent that the plane was approaching its destination: London. John had come to at about the same time as I, and realized fairly quickly that he was trapped in a well, chained to the floor of it, and that there were bones under the water. When he told me that, I knew I was not at Sherrinford.
“Upon examination, the photographs displayed were of scenes and people from my childhood, and when I pushed at one of the walls of the ‘cell’, the whole thing collapsed outward around me. It was black night and I was on the grounds of Musgrave Hall -- and I thought that the bones John had found in that well were undoubtedly Redbeard’s.
“Euros took a turn in the voice feed as I snatched up the lantern and ran to the house, and as I went inside, there she was, projected on a screen again, in the entryway. She told me it was time to solve the Musgrave ritual or she would drown another of my pets. I heard John, again, seemingly from a room off the entry. I went in and there was another screen, displaying John in the well, water pouring down over him. Then the girl in the plane was back, too, increasingly panic stricken.
“I had mere minutes to save them both by solving a riddle that had completely baffled both Mycroft and I all those years ago.
“What was needed was emotional context. John slipped and fell and found more bones: a child’s skull. And when he told me that, it came back to me. Victor, my best friend was Redbeard. The two of us were so involved in our games that we barely noticed my sister, who had no friends at all, and felt as though she was losing me as well. She had no-one -- just as it said on one of the funny gravestones in the garden. They were a sort of folly in miniature, the names made up, the dates all wrong. And one said Nemo Holmes, 1617-1822, Aged 32 years. Nemo: from the Latin for on-one. Nobody.
“She had killed Victor, though. That fact was hard to bear. But I would not lose another friend that way, if I could help it.
“The wrong dates on the gravestones were the key to the cipher, and the cipher was the song -- it was never a set of directions as Mycroft and I had assumed. I was able to break the code. It led me to Eurus, in what had been her room in the house. And she was the girl on the plane, the one who was alone and unable to land. I told her I would help her, that I would bring her home, that it was not too late, she had just gone the wrong way last time. And she told me, finally, where to find John.”
Molly breathed, “Thank God!”
“Yes,” Sherlock agreed. “That’s nearly all of it. A neighbor, one of the leaseholders, had noticed all the lights and activity and had come to investigate. I met him as I ran out the door, and he let me use his phone to text Lestrade, then helped me get John out of the well. The local police showed up, and Lestrade wasn’t far behind, having come by helicopter -- but you knew that. He said you’d called him and told him about my strange phone call to you. He told me that you were so worried that you had wanted to come with him. It was that thought -- that you still cared and were waiting here for me -- that helped me through the next bits. Telling everything to the police. Seeing my sister so broken and lost to the world once more, and I unable to do more than send her back to her long imprisonment – for that time, at least.
“And then… I came home to you.”
She could not help smiling a little. “The end of the story.”
But he said, “No, not at all.” He moved, adjusting their positions, scooting down so that once more they lay face to face; tenderly brushed her hair back behind her ear, kissed her, and said, “It’s a new beginning.”

top 5(ish), bottom 5(ish)
tagged by @ancientreader
Rules:  Tag the person who tagged you, always post the rules, answer the questions, and add the date!
What are your five most popular works? (starting with the most kudos)
1. The Sincerity of Dust: Sherlock, Mycroft/Lestrade, 600 words. Some men can't look at a set of shelves without having opinions about how they should be organized. Some men are also in love. Fluffy little thing about a pair of love letters written in care and attention instead of ink, composed as a coda to @linpatootie‘s wildly popular Unlikely Connections We Make. This story has over a thousand kudos, and its popularity scares me. I speak very quietly when I’m near it, and hope it doesn’t eat me.
2. Three Continents and Many Nations: Elementary, Joan/OCs, 1K "In an experience of women which extends over many nations and three separate continents..." — The Sign of the Four Bright, humorous story in which Sherlock meets a school-friend of Joan’s and discovers that he isn’t the founder of the Joan Watson Fanclub. (wtf!?) Writing-wise, I’ve leveled-up since this one, but it still makes me happy.
3. Etta Candy’s Last Stand: Wonder Woman, Diana/Etta, 1800 words This is the way Etta is going to die: trapped between a bed and Diana Prince’s breasts. Huh. I knew this had gotten a rash of readership, but I didn’t realize it’d managed to bump itself into my top five already! It’s only been in existence, what, month? Humorous sharing-a-bed fic, in which I have SRS FEELINGS about both Diana and Etta.
4. Foundations: Elementary, Marcus/Joan, 5K It's not the life that Marcus planned. But Marcus can build a new one. Marcus-centric canon-divergence, spinning off from 2x10 “Tremors”: Marcus’ arm never gets better, but he puts together a life he wants to live anyway. I hold this story (along with it’s unofficial prequel “Bedrock”) close to my heart. 5. The Sound of Lemurs and Bees Murmuring: Elementary, Joan & Sherlock, 2K "I am apologizing, Watson," Sherlock enunciates with exaggerated dignity, "for the lemurs." // Somewhere in the brownstone, there must be a place where he can sleep. In which Sherlock is sleep-deprived and clingy in the wake of the S1 finale. Again: I’ve leveled-up since writing this, but I’m still fond of it.
And because AO3 isn’t everything, two honorable-mention works that were wildly popular outside of AO3:
A. Something Good (Will Come From That): Holmesian Multiverse, 3:15. 100 years of moving pictures about Holmes and Watson. This thing has passed six thousand fucking plays, y’all. And people have rec’d it in a bunch of languages I don’t speak, from German to Japanese. For a little while there, I was worried my mom was going to send it to me.
α. Score: Q to 12: Elementary, Joan & Sherlock, 500 words. Sherlock refuses to confine himself to the Official Club and Tournament Word List. Joan refuses to spend any more of her time trying to make him. The Calvinscrabble fic! This one was wildly popular on tumblr, to the tune of 1700 notes.
What are your five least popular works by kudos?
5. Sixty for Sixty: ACD Holmes, mostly femslash pairings, 11 x 60 words. 60 word ficlets for (some of) the 60 canon stories. Written for Sherlock60 on LJ. Most of the readership and comments happened on LJ already; I brought them over to AO3 mostly for archival purposes. I’m quite fond of a number of them.
4. Talent and Genius: New Russian Holmes, Holmes & Watson, 800 words. Talent hits a target no one else can hit. Genius hits a target no one else can see. Heh, this hasn’t even been up a week and it’s a micro-fandom; of course its readership hasn’t found it yet. Give it time, and it’ll find a couple-dozen readers. ;-) A little vignette about talent, genius, teamwork, and trust.
3. [podfic] A Heap of Sun and Shadow: Elementary, fem!Sherlock/Joan, 8:56. Twenty-five years on, Joan and Sherlock retire to upstate New York together. My first podfic! I’ve long been fond of @phoenixfalls‘ story, and fell in love with it more while recording it.
2. [vidlets] ceci ne pas une vid: Various fandoms, 5:49. Thirteen excerpts from vids-that-never-were, made for Ghost-Lingering's "Silent Fandoms," Festivids 2014. Listed individually, these would fill all the previous slots, but wev. These vidlets were well-received in their original context, as part of @ghost-lingering‘s Silent Fandoms, a meta-not!vid about the many requested-but-unvidded fandoms of Festivids. (If you’re clicking any of those links and trying to understand the context, I recommend seekingferret’s commentary.) On AO3, however, these have gotten next to no attention, which neither surprises nor grieves me: these are the rarest of rare fandoms, and AO3 is better at vid-archiving than vid-distributing.
1. Vibra la Revolución! Ask Dr. Eldritch, Val/Kari/Ping, 175 words. After the robot revolution, Kari and Val reflect on how much they owe Ping. My first-ever fanfic! Whacky little crack written in binary, for a webcomic that hasn’t updated in... a decade now? Literally no one has ever hit the kudos button for this little bit of weirdness. :-DDDDD

Sweeter than fiction (SherlollyFicExchange2017 @darnedchild)
Mary would be the first one to admit that motherhood softened her embarrassment threshold, that was one explanation for it, domesticity had apparently made it mentally acceptable for Mary to indulge in the hobbies of middle aged housewives that Sherlock would roll his eyes on. (Joining the ranks of the type of women that made fifty shades of Grey a best seller) so she couldn’t exactly share her new hobby with him.
So when Molly Hooper caught Mary reading something called ‘Warstan gets Naughty’ by username: WhatzonDkink, Mary not only was way too eager to talk about her latest obsession but also had no shame in admitting it was an obsession. Sherlock probably would have expected more from Mary! She blamed this on Rosie, if as a woman she no longer had an issue with having baby vomit on her shirt when she went grocery shopping, then obviously she wouldn’t have it with sharing her smut preferences with a friend during girls night either.
“Let me get this straight, people write about you and John, just because they saw you on the telly and mentioned in John’s blog” Molly hummed over her second glass of wine “they write about you the way people write about Clara Oswald and the Doctor, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley kind of thing?”
“Like Posh Spice and David Beckham” Mary nodded “I found this site dedicated to real people fanfiction it’s quite big, there’s a section for royalty, politicians, sports players, celebrities and crime fighters, people consider us the second best pairing in that category, they write all sort of thing featuring John and me” she grinned proudly while Molly giggled
“Let me see” Molly peered at Mary’s tablet while reading out loud “ this one is called "Make me scream” by username Bby8R2D2, John Watson comes home from a day chasing a serial killer to find his wife wants to leave him, unless he can prove to her why he was nicknamed 'Three continent Watson’ ….“ Molly burst out laughing opening the link and skimming over it "Mary I’m not sure paragraph five is anatomically possible”
Mary nodded scrolling down “just wait, paragraph ten defies the laws of physics and some of chemistry’s” feeling emboldened Mary opened another file and pushed it into Molly’s eyes “this one is a particular favorite of mine”
The fan fiction was called “Duty to Love” by LaD-GG-romnuv,and Molly read out loud “ An: I wrote this while sleep deprived working through rocket science and assembling an IKEA bedroom set, John Watson is Captain America and Mary Morstan is Black Widow having a hot affair, their love will be put to test when John has to choose between his love for Mary and his duty to Rehabilitated Winter Soldier Sherlock Holmes” Molly perked up with interest opening the first chapter and reading through “wow this is…this isn’t bad, you’re..very in character, oh look I’m in here too… Molly Carter-Hooper agent 221” this brought a smile to Molly’s face, then she let out another gasp “Oh John how could you!…Mary, you know him better than this….No, Sherlock, that’s a bastard move”
“I know right, the writer hasn’t updated in ages” Mary groaned putting her hands to her face “I have half a mind to track down their IP and ask them if I John will ever see me again now that he joined the group fighting Lokiriarty in Asgard and I am single-handedly heading S.H.I.E.L.D” she also didn’t mention that special Agent 221 and the Winter Soldier were also having awkwardly adorable encounters as a ‘side pairing’ and that she wanted to know how it ended, but that was neither here nor there.
“Aaaand thanks for the spoilers” Molly glared at Mary who shamelessly raised her glass, surreptitiously closing the link
“Some people write things that you wouldn’t believe in the NSFW rating…let’s just say I’ll spare you the details of 'Watson Gang bang’ and 'Blood kink Mary’ because you’re not ready for that type of darkness”
“ what? Really?” Molly’s finger hovered over the rating button but Mary stopped her with a glare
“Yes, really, but back to my favorites, there’s an angsty one that’s very on demand recently. "Bone Marrow,” I think, apparently John met me as a patient, we had a collection of one night stands turned dates and now I only have weeks to live because the writer of that fanfiction is a sadistic ass"
“Do you end up together though?”
“I have no idea!” Mary groaned “ I swear Nick Sparks could use a tip or two from the hyperactive teenage girl that’s writing about my imaginary terminal illness”
Molly snorted patting her hand “speaking about angst, does John know about this?” She motioned to Mary’s tablet
Mary rolled her eyes and shook her head “He doesn’t want to hear about our fictional sex life, apparently it’s not fair that his fan fiction persona is better stud than he is, and a better doctor, actor, polo player, international pilot, astronaut” Mary ticked off her fingers “You don’t see me complaining about the superhuman professional skills that those fans give me” “That’s actually kinda…sweet, if a little disturbing” Molly settled in comfortably in her lounge seat while she ordered another round of margaritas when once again Mary’s tablet beeped with a notification
“Hey Mary what’s "Sherlolly finally does it” about? It’s by username Sherlicks-lollies and it looks promising….“ but Mary had already grabbed the tablet out of Molly’s hands
"Yeah no you can’t read that, nope not at all” Mary as a rule never looked nervous unless she wanted people to think she was nervous, but the face she made at the very mention of that fan fiction was…actually the same face Mary made whenever something unexpected happened to Rosie’s nappy
“Mary” Molly eyed her tablet suspiciously “what is in there?”
“Nothing, just more tawdry things about me and John….if you’ll excuse me I need to leave a proper commentary review on this work of art” her face was turning a bit red and as far as Molly was concerned, Mary’s face had just passed dirty-nappy territory straight into buying-condoms-for-Mrs Hudson level of uncomfortable.
“You do know that I also have Google on my phone don’t you?” The tiny pathologist said in a threatening tone taking out her serviceable smartphone and waving it in front of Mary’s face
“You wouldn’t dare” her friend replied as nonchalantly as someone hiding smutty fan fiction could
“Google it is”
“Molls you’re not ready for the world of RPF, trust me”
But Molly Hooper was a brave soul, a brave, intrepid and possibly drunk soul who was capable of sawing through the rib cage of a dead body without batting an eyelash and also once gone on a date with Moriarty, she hung out with Sherlock! and somewhere, one day if she ever needed to change jobs, those things were going to be stamped in her CV under 'work experience’. So she wasn’t afraid of fan fiction.
Or so she thought “You don’t intimidate me Mary Watson” Molly whispered ominously
Finally as if hit by a very mischievous idea Mary’s face did a 180 and a rather creepy smirk graced her face “Fine, Google the word Sherlolly, go ahead Hooper, I dare you, I’ll let you read this if you do” And so Molly did.
Mary who was now shamelessly enjoying herself again covertly turned on her tablet’s camera and carefully took pictures of the progression of emotions crossing Molly’s face, shock, disbelief, despair, embarrassment, flattery, embarrassment again, and finally plain mortification.“Mary I’m in the dictionary”
“I know”
“Sherlock and me…we’re in the bloody Oxford dictionary”
“Next to the definition of Shipping, yes” Mary passed Molly another margarita in mock sympathy “Oxford, but only the updated version, nobody over twenty reads the updated version anyway”
“Sherlock and Molly” More disbelief “Sherlolly…”
“I warned you” Mary nodded, then since she might as well rip off the band aid completely she added “there’s fanart too”
The horror dawned “People draw…people draw Sherlock and me together”
“And they’re quite talented at it too, all sort of situations, oh don’t look so terrified Molly, the fan-art isn’t that bad, the fandom thinks you’re both Kawai or something, not all of what they draw is porn”
Molly cursed something so colorful it made Mary feel proud “tell me Sherlock doesn’t know”
“Oh he knows it exists, he probably just hasn’t thought about it very deeply” Mary shrugged “Like Greg’s name, fan fiction is probably not relevant enough for his nibs”
“And thank God for his little mercies” Molly hissed “Someone drew us sailing with the Queen!”
“must be a new member, usually your shippers are more into drawing the insides of St Bart’s or imagining what your flat looks like” Mary was enjoying herself Furthermore she wanted Molly Hooper to enjoy herself so she tried a new approach “hey don’t be so shocked, the shippers love you, they buy any science magazine you’re mentioned in, it’s not all about Sherlock for them”
“They like an imaginary version of us” Molly was not appeased
“And we liked the airbrushed versions of Prince Charles and Princess Diana when they were a thing so I don’t see how it’s any different, cheer up Missus Pathologist” Mary encouraged in her best 'mom’ voice trying her best to make her friend see the bright side “Carpe Diem and all that”
And that’s how Molly Hooper discovered the world of Real Person Fanfiction, at first Molly was reluctant to see the website again, after all any sane person would be a bit miffed if they found out that other people played around with the details of their life like grown children with action figures. But curiosity won out, the next time she felt bored in the tube she pulled out her phone and decided to give them the benefit of the doubt.Soon she came to realize that the so called shippers were not really malicious or ill intentioned. In fact, most of them had in one way or another become interested in her romantic life because they’ve been previously impressed with something during the course of her career and looked her up online. It was somewhat ridiculous, these people knew nothing about her life (or so she thought) but apparently, they decided over the course of who-knows-how-long-this-had-been-going-on that she and Sherlock Holmes were either going to make a good couple or were already a good couple behind the scenes.
Anderson’s crazy conspiracy group had probably only proved these people right when Sherlock was gone and….. Oh damn, it got worse.
There were fanfics about that too. (Username ‘Notr3a11yAnderson’ wasn’t even subtle when it earned the website’s award for reviewer of the month)
“How many variations of Sherlock snogging me after falling from the rooftop can exist?” Molly muttered to herself glaring a bit at her phone, a quick refinement in the ‘advance searching’ gave her an answer that had her cursing again.
Ten million? Really?.
But Molly couldn’t find it in herself to hate them, when her mortification died out over the weekend amusement replaced it, after all, if she was allowed to silently wish Mycroft and Anthea would snog already, then why judge the shippers for romanticizing her extremely ordinary life in their heads. Mary was probably right in taking a relaxed approach.Outrage would serve her for naught, it wasn’t as if these people were like Kitty Riley or her ilk, fan fiction was still considered a widely taboo hobby in most places and the so called 'shippers’ didn’t seem to be doing it for personal profit. To these perfect strangers imagining her and Sherlock together was just…fun, so they kept doing it.
A phone call from Mike interrupted her musings and when she went back to her phone like most Internet browsers hers allowed a pop-up ad on the fanfiction website latest updates to blink on her phone screen.“Sherlolly Saves the endangered Koalas” Molly hummed reading through one of the fanfics suggested by the pop up, apparently the Sherlolly shippers were very dedicated fans, of course there were other suggestions, an N-sync fan fiction that featured the band’s most popular members getting together and someone wrote Tiger Woods and Serena Williams having a super powerful tennis playing golfer baby. Mary and John were popular too with a multitude of different scenarios straight out of a Hospital Soap being the favored fanfic inspiration. Molly bookmarked the one marked as a ‘Letters of love in Afghanistan’ because it sounded like something she wouldn’t mind reading, even if the author’s bio made Molly think he really needed a hug.
But the fanfiction about the endangered Koalas taunted Molly again, it wouldn’t hurt to click it just once.
How bad could something tagged #fluffy-super-fluffy be? The summary promised two people in a Koala rescue, really it wasn’t as if she’d be reading anything rated NSFW. The tube wasn’t going to get any faster and she was curious.
One click became another, then another and before she knew it Molly was making BogusRPFwebsite.notcom part of her daily routine in the tube and slowly started replacing her paperback novels during her relaxing time. Sometimes she could even ‘deduce’ who the writers of certain stories were but she tried not to, things might get weird in real life if they turned out to be people close to her (She was pretty sure leg-in-a-cast Polly Turner and Nurse Roberts from upstairs were writing that collab, where Sherlock and Molly had a host of quintuplets and labor, was a sneeze for Molly’s vagina).
Also, the more she read, the more questions she had, like:
Why were her first borns always either girls or twins most of the time? Were the authors aware that little boys made cute fantasy babies too?.
What was the obsession with Sherlock’s hair? I mean yes Molly knew that his curls were unusually perfect and had fantasized about pulling them as much as the next girl but really, they all made it sound as though he used unicorn blood in his shampoo and it was starting to get to Molly in real life.
Why did every girl that liked him with the exception of Molly turn out to be a serial killer or a criminal of some kind?.
Also, why was everyone in fan fiction always extremely attractive? Had the ugly people been abducted by makeup scientists?.
Why was Sherlock’s shirt always open during his fictional interactions with her?.
How exactly did time work in fan fiction? Nobody ever seemed to own a clock in fictional London.
And with these type of questions in mind, Molly pretended that it was someone else in those pages, someone else who was pretty, witty and adorable who was in love with another Sherlock who definitely wasn’t her Sherlock because this was all fan fiction and it didn’t count as real life.
Some writers made it really easy for Molly to compartmentalize her denial, writing either Sherlock or her out of character was a sure fire way for Molly to keep her plausible deniability while enjoying a bit of escapism, it didn’t hurt that Sherlock was in France for an overnight case with John and wouldn’t be back until he solved another seemingly impossible puzzle and Molly didn’t have to SEE him.
Sure he texted her with crime scene pictures and called her every once in a while to talk about incompetent French coroners but so far so good Molly was keeping real life Sherlock out of sight and out of mind while the multiple incarnations of RPF Sherlock gave her a good source of amusement and that was fine with Molly Hooper.
It was hard for embarrassment not to turn into flattery after some days swimming through the #fluff and #morefluff tag, I mean what woman didn’t like the idea of being cool enough to inspire people to writing glorified romance novels in obscure corners of the internet, Molly didn’t think either Sherlock or her deserved half of the unspoken admiration these writers had for them, but nevertheless it was…sweet (if a little disconcerting).
Fanfiction was one of those things that were ignored when one saw another person doing it, like reading the newspaper, people never paid much attention to another’s reading materials unless the topic was broached and as such Molly’s new pastime could have gone largely unnoticed had it not been for one thing: Sherlock Holmes did not like it when Molly didn’t pay him attention and Two weeks later when he got back from France, Molly Hooper knew she had a problem.
“Molly, I need access to a good set of kidneys, before noon if you please" was the first thing Sherlock said when he got back from his case, John at his side rolled his eyes, expecting the pathologist to at least greet him with her usual bright smile, but Molly surprisingly didn’t even lift up her head from her computer.
“yes Sherlock, I’ll get it to you later”
“and a good femur, for some reason Mrs. Hudson threw away my last one"
Molly who was still clearly engrossed in whatever she was doing barely managed an “of course Sherlock”
“And some eyes, preferably without much cornea damage" Sherlock frowned at her “Molly are you even listening or is the usual game of Solitaire taking up too much of your time?”
But even then he only managed to make Molly separate herself from the computer long enough to pull a notepad from her desk drawer and slide it in his direction “write a list of the body parts you need and I’ll deliver them at Baker Street after my shift” and then she was back to what had her so busy.
Molly tried to ignore Sherlock’s presence, easily opening the tabs for a couple of vaguely interesting autopsy reports to justify herself in case he decided to snoop in her files and went back to reading more fanfiction completely tuning out the real life consulting detective of her dreams.
The fanfiction that had her giving Sherlock auto pilot responses was titled “Celebrity Romance” in it Sherlock was written as an actor in a BBC series called ‘Benedict’, the TV show he starred in followed the life of fictional Hollywood darling Benedict Cumberbatch ( Sherlock apparently had been at it for five seasons) who was married with kids and held a demanding life as a sought after celebrity, and Molly, in turn, played a secondary role in his show as one of Benedict’s equally famous friends, progressive feminist actress Louise Brealey. What had Molly intrigued was that in the fanfiction despite the fact that on screen Sherlock and Molly’s characters were only good friends, with story lines that rarely overlapped, off screen they were actually falling in love and bonding over Starbucks coffees. (privately Molly rather liked Loo’s minor suffrage-style story line just as much as she liked Ben’s love story with his wife Sophie, but that was just her)
The point was that Molly was really invested in the plot of that story, the author was making his characters jump through rings of fire to get that happy ending…..Aaaand “Excuse me Sherlock did you say something? I was a bit distracted with this autopsy report” Molly said, eyes snapping out of her reverie to catch the tail end of one of his deductions on the state of Lestrade’s NSY passwords.
Molly saw a muscle in his jaw twitch with exasperation “Yes, I can see that” Sherlock said with narrowed eyes “if you tried to get any closer to the screen you would be in danger of merging with it”
Molly nodded distractedly making the same face Sherlock usually did when he was texting behind his back “Of course Sherlock, merging, that’s great for the victim” in response Sherlock calmly walked to the power outlet in the corner and unplugged her desktop “HEY” Molly snapped glaring at her blank computer and turned her whole attention to Sherlock Furiously, now she would never know what Happened after fictional Molly tweeted about how her character Louise needed to get more screen time.
“Body parts? Assistance in the lab?” Sherlock said without flinching watching Molly’s petulant glare melt into her usual friendly smile
“I gather you brought a sample of evidence with you" She replied easily getting up as though she hadn’t been not paying him attention for the last fifteen minutes, privately she resolved to find that fan fiction again when she got home “let’s see it, if it was worth bringing here it must be something big”
Sherlock handed over the evidence bag and for all intents and purposes that should have been it, she was back to the usual, except it wasn’t.
Because that week was the week Molly ventured into the deep dark hole that was the smut rating. And Sherlock being Sherlock, noticed the change immediately.
Molly began distancing herself from him and he didn’t like it.
She was distracted almost disinterested in him every time he saw her, she answered his questions in sentences that might as well have been recorded on an answering machine and had started spending too much time on her emails. To everyone else, she looked and acted like the normal Molly but Sherlock knew that something was going on in her life.
Normally this kind of behavior would lead him to deduce some new sort of paramour in her life, but a deeper look at the details of her social life showed no variation in patterns, her flat showed no sign of new visitors staying longer than what was considered appropriate and a quick call to Mycroft reassured him that she hadn’t been anywhere else in the past month.
Browsing through her phone and computer gave up similarly uninspiring results, other than a mountain of random pages and articles on things he didn’t care about Molly hadn’t logged on to any new dating website or media equivalents.
The only detail he could see was that Molly’s strange behavior coincided with the recent scheduling of her weekly nights out with Mary and like a dog with a bone, Sherlock had to investigate further. So using his master detective skills he roped John into trying to spy on his daughter’s godmother and on his wife (John was naturally against it citing that for very obvious reasons spying on a retired secret agent like Mary was almost impossible, also according to him spying on girls during their girl time was something teenage boys did, not men) but Sherlock eventually managed to convince him .
Meanwhile, Molly felt she couldn’t be around Sherlock anymore and it was all Mary’s fault.
“I ran away Mary, I said I needed to wash my hair and ran, like a coward” Molly complained bringing her hands to her face “ I can’t look at him in the eyes, I’ve tried!”
“I hate to say it, but: I told you so” Mary chuckled patting her hand “tell me again how bad is it?”
“On a scale of one to ten, eleven, I can’t seem to stop reading them" Molly wailed not daring to take her hands off her face “maybe I’ve turned into a pervert”
“you’re not a pervert Molls, people that send pictures of their privates to unsuspecting strangers on chat rooms are perverts, you’re just you know….sexually frustrated” the chuckle turned into a full blown giggle.
“Thank you for stating the obvious Mrs. Three Continent Watson" Molly grumbled “They like Sherlock’s penis! A lot and my breasts, just look at them Mary” Molly pointed to her modest chest “They are not a big deal, but out there in the big wide internet there are strangers that…have a very artistic view of my breasts”
“And of Sherlock’s penis,“ Mary reminded her laughing
“Stop laughing this is serious, I need help” Molly then pulled up her phone “hear this one” Molly cleared her throat “Prince Sherlock wasn’t supposed to be fucking his niece’s Fairy godmother, but he couldn’t help himself, the christening was almost over and he just had to know what it was like to taste her dewy pussy, to be inside her and hammer his member so deep she cried with pleasure, his manhood was made for her, hard red and angry his shaft was painfully aware of how beautiful she was and he just wanted to rip off every single item of frothy fabric covering her and her, gloriously hard nippled small breasts, see his little fairy naked and open just for him, while he made her miss the christening of Princess Briar Rosamund”
“Oh wow, what talent”Mary was holding her sides in laughter “Remind me to invite whoever wrote that to the christening of my next baby”
“MARY” Molly almost started crying “that one had a plot I enjoyed and now I can’t stop thinking about…”
“Sherlock’s rock hard penis?”
“STOP SAYING IT” Molly hissed “this is all your fault”
“Hey my friend I told you not to do it, you didn’t listen"
“you knew I would do it anyway" Molly wailed “Now I can’t stop thinking about how it would be like to actually have sex with him, not that I didn’t before, but these people are graphic Mary, VERY, graphic, now every time I look at Sherlock I wonder which one of these people hit the mark, is he rough in bed, does he take it slow, does he like his hair pulled, or does he do the hair pulling, is his penis as big as they claim it is or is that just normal smut exaggeration” Molly began ranting while Mary kept trying not to spill her drink with her giggles “I mean I’m pretty sure some of these people have access to his medical records from his druggie days so one has to question if it’s true, I for one like to be dominant in bed and now it’s affecting my relationship with Sherlock because I can’t look at him in the eye without wondering what it’s like to spank his perfect ass with that bloody riding crop he likes so much”
“Oh Molly, you really need to have sex and soon" Mary advised wisely patting the petite woman’s head, then she turned around on her stool and looked at the pair of old men that were sitting at the table behind them “By the way, John, why don’t we head home and leave Sherlock and Molly alone, I think you’ve heard enough”
“Mary Watson that move just cost you a friendship” Molly looked genuinely betrayed but Mary didn’t look one bit regretful
“You need him out of your system and you Mr. Clark Kent…“ She said pulling Sherlock up and divesting him from the trey wig and bad prosthetics "need to stop being a tosser over the fact that Lois Lane likes Superman better” and with that Mary swanned out of the pub with an apologetic John in tow, leaving Sherlock alone with Molly
minutes ticked down.
Another minute.
Sherlock still was looking at her like he’d never seen her before. “So it was fan fiction all along”
“Yes"
“That might present a problem for us” Sherlock said awkwardly
“I’m aware”
“Molly I….”
But she cut him off deciding enough was enough “Just say whatever you need to say Sherlock” Molly glared at him “I’m tired, I’m hungry and extremely sexually frustrated so if you’re going to be a bastard about this get it over with, I need to find a stranger to shag tonight preferably”
that got his attention really fast, no, the only man Molly was going to take home was going to be him “you’re embarrassed when you shouldn’t be, I was merely thinking about the next course of action one should take when a woman one has fantasized of fucking confesses the same thing”
“I was not expecting that" Molly eyed him suspiciously before downing whatever drink she had in hand before shrugging and eyeing her phone “you know what Sherlock, any other day I would be very accommodating talking about what you want and why this isn’t a good idea, but right now, I can’t think clearly when your shirt buttons look like they want to pop out so here is what will happen” She stretched to her toes and grabbed him by the collar watching his eyes grow dark with want, taking his hand and pressing it to the waistband of her skirt “I have questions about how we would be in bed, you have answers, it ends tomorrow and it absolutely doesn’t mean anything”
“we could start with those fan fictions you were reading, you seem to want to investigate which ones are accurate and which ones are entirely poppycock" he murmured in her ear making her shiver, desire pooling in her belly
“I have a long list”
turns out that Sherlock was in fact not as disgusted with Molly’s fan fiction problem as he’d been with Mary’s, he was positively pleased by it and it was a frequent source of both amusement and role-play ideas any time he went to Molly’s flat or had her over in Baker street.
The flowery language in the smut section only made Sherlock more aware of the tiny details of Molly’s body that he could use to his advantage, it was like having a cheat code on how to sexually please Molly.
And in turn, he found himself pleasured by her in many wicked ways.
“I think we might have to extend this arrangement” Sherlock murmured into Molly’s hair for the umpteenth time, he was sated and she looked happy, he wasn’t going to ruin a good thing.
“An Extension?” Molly replied with a yawn cuddling into his chest “How big?”
“Depends, these people publish stories every day, how about until they stop writing?”
“That could take forever"
“Good thing I’m a patient man then" He replied kissing her lips.
And yes it turned out that Sherlock, was so much better at everything he tried in real life than he was in fiction, especially when it came to Molly.

Team Awesome Dorks
(For @being-edward-hyde and the Natural Apocalypse AU we’ve been talking about)
The world has gone to shit.
Mother Nature, fed up with the destruction of her creations had taken revenge. Earthquakes leveled cities and split continents apart. Tsunamis flooded low lands and washed away the lives of many. Volcanic eruptions buried towns under ash and poisoned lakes with acid.
Most of humanity had been wiped out by the wave of natural disasters. But a small percentage survived. Living in what remained of crumbling buildings in small communities or living a nomadic lifestyle as they searched for their loved ones.
Communication was strong in the beginning, but now there is mostly silence. It had been months since people had last heard from their friends and family.
5 friends walked through the empty streets of an abandoned city. Tired, hungry and a little bit smelly. The group consisted of:
Alfred: The “Leader”. An energetic, cheerful and nosy young man who is searching for his brother.
Nate: They are witty, always have a clever comeback for everything and has a crooked grin.
Gilbert: Arrogant, has a massive ego and loves a fight. He is accompanied by a small bird called Gilbird, who is just like him.
Lauren: Short, nerdy and like her height; she has a short temper. Tells terrible and dirty jokes.
Mathias: Stubborn, full of youthful humour and a little wild (like his hair). He often complains about the lack of beer wherever they go.
The five look around. Weapons drawn in case of violent scavengers. They peer through dirty store windows to check for supplies. Gilbert hits the jackpot and calls everybody over.
Alfred whistles “That’s the motherload in there!” He tries to open the door and whines as he discovers that they are locked.
“Stand aside Al” says Mathias “I’ve got this”
Mathias put his axe through the glass of the door and uses his jacket to clear the remaining shards. He unfolds his jacket to reveal a large tear in the fabric.
“Hey Lauren!” He peers at the pastel pink haired girl through the tear. She just glares and flips the bird. That’s the third time this month he’s ripped his jacket.
“Ok. Nate. Mathias. You keep watch. Take care of any scavengers if they approach”
They nod. Making sure the other three were in safely.
The shelves were still mostly packed with food. They often didn’t enter places like this as this was a sure sign of a trap. The trio remained wary as they browse. The city they were in had been partially destroyed by an earthquake and it was at risk for more minor quakes in the future.
“What do we need?” Gilbert asks from the chocolate aisle.
“More water, canned goods, some food for Gilbird, medical supplies and extra clothes” Lauren replies as she places a few cans of tuna and salmon into her bag “And get Mathias some beer. I’m getting tired of his whining…”
Alfred stares solemnly at the long since spoiled chocolate milk in the fridges. Lauren walks past him and gives him a sympathetic pat on the back as she shoves bottles of fruit juice into Alfreds bag.
“I’ve got the beer, canned food and water!” Gilbert calls.
Lauren was about to respond. Gunshots and shouting came from outside. That could only mean one thing.
Scavengers.
The three throw the bags over their shoulders and withdraw their weapons. Racing to the entrance as fast as possible to aid Nate and Mathias.
Four scavengers already lay dead on the asphalt. Two cut in half by Mathias’ trusty axe. The scavengers were filthy, malnourished and struggling to put up a fight as they use up the last of their energy. The fight was won in a matter of moments in a hail of bullets, clean decapitations and blunt force trauma from Alfred’s bat. The five had suffered light cuts and some bruising from the fight, but they had suffered worse at the hands of a ruthless community leader at the beginning of the apocalypse.
“Grab the rest of the supplies and let’s go” Nate says, looting each of the dead scavengers.
The group make themselves comfortable in an office building. They passed the time by racing using office chairs and fire extinguishers; which was all fun and games until Gilbert crashed into Nate and gave them a concussion.
The radio on Gilbert’s belt crackles to life and Matthew’s voice comes through it.
“Hello? Is anybody there?”
“It’s Matthew!” Alfred whoops.
“No shit, Sherlock” Nate replies.
“Fuck off, Watson”
Nate’s lips form into a crooked grin . The student is learning well.
“Yo! Mattie. Are you still at that old fire watch tower?” Mathias asks.
“Yeah” Matthew responds “Abel’s here too…”
Everyone shuffles closer to the radio “Hey Abel!” They all shout in unison.
The stoic Dutchman replies with a blunt hello.
Lauren spoke as she looked at the map “We’re still about two states from where you are. Unless we find a car with a tank full of fuel then it’ll take us about a month, two, maybe more to reach you”
They talk to Matthew and Abel until their voices are replaced by white noise.
“I’m so happy that those two found each other again” Gilbert says, stretching.
Nate nods “Team Tulip is finally reunited”
“Team Tulip?” The Awesome Trio asks, confused.
“That’s my ship name for them”
Mathias rolls his eyes “It’s amazing that we’re in the middle of the apocalypse and you still find people to ship”
“Matthew and Abel have always been OTP. Matthew’s adorable crush on him was always obvious”
“Whatever you say, Nate…”
“What should we call ourselves?” Alfred wonders.
“That’s easy! Team Awesome Fivesome!” Gilbert said, proudly. Alfred and Mathias burst into laughter. Gilbird angrily pecks Gilbert’s head “Ow! Ok! Ok! The Awesome Fivesome and Gilbird!”
“A fivesome is an orgy. We are not calling out group that” Lauren said.
Gilbert huffs and crosses his arms.
“How about…Team Awesome Dorks?” Mathias suggests
“Hm…I like it! What do you think?”
“It fits”
“It really does suit us!”
“It’s good”
“My name was more awesome!”
“Cheep! Cheep!”
“It’s settled then. From now on we will be known as Team Awesome Dorks!”
Like a group of losers from a high school movie; they each place their hands in the middle and raise them with a cheerful yell of “Team Awesome Dorks!”

First Time - Realistic Sex
Sometimes Lost Is Where You Need to Be by stardust_made, 14 k, explicit. John is beside himself. He’s managed to fall in love with his flatmate, and he has no idea what to do about it. Neither does Sherlock … at first.
A Fever Dreamby Sexxica, 8 k, explicit. When Sherlock slips a new compound into John’s morning cuppa, he thinks he has everything under control. Of course this isn’t the case, and soon both John and Sherlock are under the influence of something with some very interesting side effects.
Tequila and Friends by MrsNoggin, 5 k, explicit. PWP. John and Sherlock stumble home inebriated from a birthday outing for John, and land in bed. Too sweet. Slightly awkward – just perfect.
A Study in Dichotomy by UrbanHymnal, 7 k, explicit. Sherlock rescues John, literally pulling him out of a closet. After falling asleep against Sherlock, John realizes his fondness has deepened to something else. Realistic, awkward first-time sex ensues later. Messy & sweet!
The Very Unlikely Existence of a Flightless Bird in a Tuxedo by cwb, 8 k, explicit. This is magic. The author takes the very topical joke that Benny Cumberbatch can’t pronounce “penguins” correctly to save his life, and spins it into gold. A bomb at a zoo has Sherlock saying “pengwings” and “penglings” as fast as hail falling. This adorable mistake has John admitting his buried love for this man, and adorable first time, competent John and virginlock sex ensues. SO sweet. (Locked to AO3.)
Sussexby SilentAuror, 26 k, explicit. After the Fall, John continues to work through his anger and distrust at having Sherlock reappear after three years missing. He finds he keeps touching Sherlock to make sure he’s still there. After Sherlock casually mentions moving to Sussex one day, and a series of murders takes them to the area for an investigation, they finally make the move from friends to lovers. Sleeping together for comfort, then first time gay sex for both – sweet and lovely.
The Thin Line by odamaki, 10 k, mature. John and Sherlock find themselves pressed in a wardrobe together for a case when something comes up. Slowly, awkwardly, the two admit their attraction, and fumble their way through a first time together. Awkward, realistic sex, and so much emotion. Oh, the feels! (Locked to AO3 users.)
Fifth Time’s the Charm by Eligh, 7 k, explicit. The first time John and Sherlock had sex, they were near blackout drunk. The next few times continue to be a comedy of errors as John insists he’s not gay and this is all a terrible mistake. Sherlock tries to delet their encounters, but John is too deeply wrapped around his heart. Eventually, John realizes he’s being a twat, and  … fifth time’s the charm.
Someone Else’s Heart by thisprettywren,  4 k, explicit. A crime scene, a rainstorm, and something they both should have known all along. First time. Hurt/comfort.
What He’s Like by magikspell, 2 k, explicit. Virginlock. First time, slightly awkward realistic sex. “I’m so in love with you,” John says, a statement of fact. “I will never not be in love with you.” Sherlock is so embarrassed. Talking and laughing in bed.
Sherlock Discovers “Three Continents Watson” by wendymarlowe, 13 k, explicit. When Sherlock learns what John “Three Continents” Watson’s army nickname is for, he realizes he’s got the perfect opportunity for a first-hand experiment in physical passion from the one person he can actually stand to be touched by. John thinks there might be a bit more to it than that.
What Sherlock Deletedby thelookyouredoingthelookagain , 4 k, explicit.  Sherlock deletes all information he deems irrelevant, but John sets out to show him that pleasure is not meaningless at all.
First Time by SailorChibi, 2 k, mature. John has finally decided he’s ready to take the next step with Sherlock. It’s his first time with a man but Sherlock is there to guide him every step of the way. For a prompt on the kink meme.

Wasted Hours by songlin (E, 4,973 w., 1 Ch. || Omegaverse || O!John/A!Sherlock, Pining, UST, Angst & Porn) – John is respectful. John keeps his distance. He doesn’t look at Sherlock when Sherlock decides trousers are for dull people. He doesn’t breathe in and savor it when Sherlock flings himself onto the couch first thing in the morning, wafting alpha scent, dressing gown settling around him in a cloud of blue silk. He doesn’t linger when he’s piecing Sherlock back together after a fight, even though he’s half-dressed and beautiful and right there. He can ignore it. He can control it.

Their Great Reward by BeautifulFiction (T, 10,095 w., 1 Ch. || UST, First Kiss, Fluff) – Boxing day, in John's opinions, is the worst day of the year. Christmas is over, the tree is wilting and stripped of gifts, and there's a week of dead-time until the clean slate of the new year. However the combination of a blizzard, a power-cut and Sherlock might just make it a day to remember.
The Five Stages of Mourning, Plus One by SunnyRea (T, 10,557 w., 1 Ch. || MCD, Pining / Grieving Sherlock, URT, Heavy Angst, Sherlock’s Mind Palace, Drug Use, Graphic Death, Depression, Unhappy Ending) – Sherlock did not want this, did not want another stalemate with John in the middle, a gun in Jim's hand.
