Sheila Nicolin and Michael Polakowski’s “Fresh Squeezed” at KO Gallery.
Currently on view at KO Gallery in Hamtramck, Michigan are artists Sheila Nicolin and Michael Polakowski’s exhibition, “Fresh Squeezed.
From the artists: “As the cold draws near each year, upper-middle-class Michiganders flee from their colonials to the solace of warm, Florida trailer parks for retirees. This invented Eden  juxtaposes the stark contrast of Tropicana-escapist mentalities with the uber highbrow symbol of the orange, which has permeated the art world since the Renaissance period. Michael Polakowski and Sheila Nicolin use this extended metaphor as a vehicle to explore the role of escapism in contemporary culture and within their own experiences. Via bold pattern and color, these artists parallel grandiose surrealist visions with normalcy: normal people, normal places, normal things. Michael is a muralist who utilizes scenery, patterning and signage observed in his life and diligently recorded in his sketchbook practice. His work calls attention to the absurd and contradictory nature of our world. Sheila, a painter and pattern designer, incorporates her commercial background into her work through pattern, color and trend iconography. Her dreamlike paintings and portraits question the nature of the real versus unreal, dream versus reality, the overwhelmed individual versus fast-paced culture.”

Sheila Nicolin explores the very human struggle to find intimate connection. narrated from a naive and voyeuristic perspective, sheila’s paintings create surrealist glimpses into authentic and vulnerable experiences surrounding loneliness, mental illness and desire.
