⚠️WARNING⚠️ ✋ STUPID SKETCH DUMP
In all seriousness, just posting a few sketches and some ink brush drawings with Chai and Roulette. Decided to do something before my vacation ends because who knows when I’ll do it again. In any case, have a Chai that’s chilling and listening to Absurdia/Fantasmagoria by mcbess.
AND YOU SHOULD TOO 🫵
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was just trying to practice my ink brushing here. Still hard without a coherent sketch underneath it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chai can’t understand Ru’s rather unique preferences in beverages. Apparently she likes her drinks “flowery”, with lavender or orchid syrup if we’re still talking about coffee.
actually she likes most things to have flowers in them. Heck, even the perfume she uses has flowery notes at the beginning. They just make everything better in her opinion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here’s “Axl”, a powerful AI that for some reason is disguised as a really fancy (and really heavy) briefcase. That can somehow turn into a giant mecha axe in her hands.
Ru wasn’t very original when giving it a name, but “Axl” couldn’t really complain here even if it wanted to.
If you somehow got to the very end, have a meme board for Roulette

why is xtra hated? Does it have character inconsistencies or something else to have hate towards it?
Ok. So. For starters, one of the main characters is a girl named Mizuha that is very probably a child/young teenager and they draw her like this all of the time (sometimes even WORSE):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(her personality is... fine... I guess. she's just uncomfortably sexualized)
The plot is basic shounen genre trope soup. The other main character, Tyr, has a dragon/Gear arm and was sealed away for a mystery amount of years so he looks like a teenager but is older than Ky (who was ~24 in the canon at the time). They also did that thing where Ky ~just so happened~ to have seen Tyr on the battlefield when he was a kid before he joined the Holy Order, and Tyr is apparently working with/under Kliff. Very "we have a new character and need to speedrun making him relevant. let's shoehorn him into everyone else's backstories."
Tyr's Gear arm (it looks like a normal arm unless he activates it):
Tumblr media
None of the characters ever bring any of this up ever again outside of Xtra. It's not mentioned in GG World, any of the guide books/encyclopedias, character profiles, novels, interviews, etc. Which you think it would be if Kliff knew A GUY WITH A GEAR ARM IN THE HOLY ORDER LOLL
The characters that are actually in the games make cameo appearances throughout the comic and I think the artist had more fun drawing them than they did the actual protagonists because they all look leagues cooler than anything Tyr or Mizuha end up doing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will give Xtra credit for one thing though, and that's for giving us one of the rawest Sol Badguy scenes in the entirety of Guilty Gear:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just don't get how the guy that wrote Lightning the Argent and Butterfly & Her Gale, two books that are still canon-relevant and generally enjoyed by the (JP) community, ended up writing such a bland story. Was it solely his idea? Was someone else forcing him to make changes to the plot and he just had to go with it?? This was GGX era so Guilty Gear was doing PRETTY GOOD in Japan at the time.
I have no idea why they felt the need to put out something with such an unoriginal premise in a series that frequently bends or breaks genre expectations. Daisuke Ishiwatari is included as an author on this, but I get the impression that was just a legality thing since he wrote basically the entire setting and cast outside of the few new ones introduced in Xtra. None of the Tyr lore beats line up with any of the established Gear lore, either pre- or post-Xtra.
Why did they write Xtra when they could have written something focused on the established cast instead. Going into Xtra for the first time is like when you pick up a cup expecting it to be pop and find out it's water instead but since you were expecting something sweet the water just tastes gross and extremely disappointing. Xtra is my least favorite Guilty Gear entry out of the entire library. Vastedge at least gave us Naoki Hashimoto and Isuka gave us A.B.A. Xtra just gave us wiki editors annoying homework.
You can read Xtra over on Mangadex if you wanna form your own opinions about it. It's only one volume and can be read pretty quickly: https://mangadex.org/title/911025e8-ae47-499c-8eff-453d18b6459a/guilty-gear-xtra

Character Modding: A Character's History
Was talking to my friend Demonseth recently about how he was down in the dumps about Boss A.B.A. in Strive's Arcade Mode (since he was working very hard to make a superboss version of her on his own).
What you have to realize is that there's different kinds of acknowledgement when it comes to fighting game characters.
A true "fan" of a character understands that character's history and nuances, the moves they had, the combos and gimmicks they did, the things that everyone LIKED about that character.
To me, understanding and respecting that history IS important... to that effect, ARC System Works may or may not be as reverent to that history as a true fan (modder) would be.
I'm frequently reminded of characters recreated in M.U.G.E.N. and how much effort fans put in to reproducing their frame data and features from older games... basically making the ultimate tribute to the characters that were important to them.
Some stuff is jokes, and silly stuff, yeah... but to me it's very important to get a good understanding of how these characters were built, both in their balanced and in their "busted" states.
Strive has recently changed and overhauled a ton of aspects of the characters, to the point that some characters might seem unrecognizable to some fans when compared to their older incarnations.
But you also have to consider the "reasons" why those changes were made... was it for balance? Was it for ease of play? Was it in consideration to the people who play that character? Or perhaps it was in consideration to the people who fight AGAINST that character? Many ideas were probably discussed and considered.
But, when I think about Boss Mods and Superboss Characters... those are above all else a "fan tribute" to characters they loved.
In THAT consideration, it shouldn't even be about balance, but about the parts of the character that were found most appealing.
Demonseth was troubled because ARC System Works created a "version" of a character he cared about and wasn't sure if his "version" of her would stand up to the genuine article.
But I'm here to say that way of thinking should be reversed.
His "version" of Boss A.B.A. is just as important in consideration to A.B.A.'s development history.
Of course, she's not the only character to get a Superboss Tribute or mods made... and there are PLENTY of mods that appeal to the wild imaginations of the fans who play these characters (some of which could be considered controversial).
But, I think the mods that matter THE MOST are the ones that think and ponder the most on a character's genuine history... the things that stood out the most about that character, the things that made that character the most FUN.
I'm sure there's a lot of discourse about what people want the MOST for their favorite mains and such, but consider too the different contexts of these characters. For ARC System Works, the most important aspects are fun and balance... but for fans, balance may not always be as important.
For me... it's about retaining a "balance" of both aspects and keeping an eye on the best elements that made that character worth playing.

Musing about making a doujin fighter
Basic idea of the game is MK but with dolls. I haven't played MK in a hot minute so the gameplay won't be like that, but that's where we are.
So I think the main character would be a porcelain doll with gold repairs, that's pretty classic. Probably fights more w gold, but maybe if EX moves are in the game, charging those lets her use shards of herself to deal more damage. Classic shoto moveset, fireball, DP, gap closer. Lowest complexity but above average stats across the board, with simple mix options.
Rival and secondary world proooobably be a scarecrow kinda doll. Slower, less durable, but hits harder than her rival. Drags and swings around the crossbar stand, thinking would be kinda like A.B.A in some animation ways. Slow grounded fireball that she can advance behind, a DP, and a heavy swing.
Gotta have a girlpla. Multiple installs kinda character who starts off kinda mediocre but gets scarier each knockdown.
BJD with a sewing kit perhaps? Smth to workshop.
Paper doll with 4th wall magic- scissors off screen, looney toons abilities, etc.
Maybe one of those drawing reference poseable mannequins too.
It would be good to look into the history of it all and get all the stuff in

Guilty Gear Strive DLC Predictions
This is like. the rest of season 2 and season 3.
Season 2
Delilah feels like a very safe bet for the next character. She was the focal point of the side story, there were sin voicelines for “DLL”, and it’s been a while without a brand new character
After Delilah, I think they’ll close off season 2 with another veteran. there’s a lot of good options, but i think the most likely is probably Jam because of her cameo in River City Girls 2. my main hope is they bring xanthe huynh from that game to voice her in english because i like her
Season 3 is going to not be in any particular order aside from the first character being Slayer. Slayer is absolutely one of the most wanted characters and it just sorta makes sense to put him first, like they did with the similarly-requested Bridget.
Vernon is like the last lore-relevant character in strive who has never been playable yet (other than Asuka) so it would make sense to put him in the game to round things off.
Elphelt is very highly requested. I think. Honestly I just want her.
Dizzy is a near lock-in since she’s very important in the lore and she’s just. Very popular. There’s no doubt in my mind she’ll make her appearance at some point in strive
The last DLC character depends on if season 3 is the last season. if it is, the last character will be Asuka. I don’t think ASW is going to release asuka in any position timeline-wise other than at the end. If it’s not the end, I could see A.B.A. (she’s a character whose last appearance was XX, similar to Bridget in season 2 or Testament in season 1). However, I could also see it depending on the subject of a possible second side story following season 2’s conclusion. In this sense, I could see it as either Johnny or April (Bridget could have a side story with the Jellyfish Pirates, which could further tie into Dizzy), Answer or Daryl (Sin or Bridget side story which involves diplomatic stuff with their resident political fathers of Ky and Goldlewis, Answer pops up because of Chipp and Daryl is. Daryl. Would also tie into Vernon and Dizzy since they would also be there probably), Bed (man may or may not be included, related to Delilah and questionably Dizzy since she may meet the Kiskes because of her connection to sin?), or Kum? (would tie into Jam ig? They’ve only interacted twice, but seeing as how they are the two most recent interactions Jam has, it seems ASW is trying to push their friendship more?)
For the record if any of this is right I am so so smart

What are your current hopes for the next guilty gear strive dlc?
I already got Baiken so I'm open to surprises honestly. I'm reasonably sure Jam is going to make it in because she always makes it in, and it would be nice if Dizzy could take a break from baking cupcakes for two seconds to smoke some bitches again hopefully accompanied by another side story (though that's probably asking for a bit much, a story expansion every new season-oh wait SF5 managed that somehow so yeah no Daisuke give me side stories because literally anything would be better than the main plot of Strive.)
My out there probably not gonna happen but i would be so happy if it did pick will always be A.B.A because even compared to every other GG character she's so bizarre but in such a charming way that I think bringing her back to modern GG would be cool.
....also Delilah maybe, but I would much rather she joined the roster of the nearest middle school so she can learn algebra instead of dealing with forces beyond human understanding (though admittedly the two are easy to confuse)

can I ask why you like noire so much? I never got to the point where I got to meet her in game and I'm curious
i assume by asking this you have 0 regards for spoilers so here it comes
-I in general like her archetype of character, a seemingly fragile/weak quirky character that can go insane/insanely berserk, like A.B.A. from guilty gear, adding the fact that the first ever original character i created ever has this archetype (this is probably the main reason i really like noire)
-but back to noire, she has this gimmick of being experimented on by her mother this has 2 effects on her, 1, she becomes a super shy, timid and jumpy person, and 2 her mother makes a talisman for her, that becomes kind of a placebo where she goes all loud and angry
-another thing of her is that she is an incredible increeeedible good unit that starts pretty -eh- like donnel, she has an ability called revenge (or something like that) where she has a chance i believe its like luck/skill% x 2 of returning any damage done to her, and by pretty much just playing and leveling her up to the cap level her % needed becomes like 30 something so the skill triggers super often and she just destroys anything and anyone that touches her, she is a glass cannon and a super fun unit to use
-i love her design even tho is the same design for all the archers i really like every single piece of clothing, the baggy pants, the tall but not too tall boots with those little holes on it looks really good, the exposed arm looks cool af, the armor on their armored arm looks so nice and the diamond pattern on her clothes is p cute
-i like her lore in general, she is a very nervous anxious little lady but she is allways allways trying to better herself, overcome her fears and allways helping out friends in need even tho its taxing for her, she has anemia and is often sent to the infirmary bcus she usually works herself a bit too much and even tho she is very meekly she is very perseptive towards how ppl feel and usually pretty direct when she thinks she can help, plus she is very genuine on her endeavours and its pretty endearing
-HER.EVIL.LAUGH.IS.SO.FUCKING.CUTE.YOU.HAVE.NO.IDEA she laughs maniacly and thend does this little squeak at the end oh my goodness i could gush about this particular voice line for hours, but an extention to this, i think the voice actress (at least the english voice actress) nailed it in most of her dialogue even tho its not much and its either, i can barely speak or IM ANGERY YELLING its done super nicely
-she is one of the only archers you get, period and SUPER useful since i dont really like virion in general
-and finaly, her hair is just too cute, its a combo of all my favorite traits on anime hair, fluffy back, braided style on the top, and some cool hair hanging aroudn her cheeks, i love it
and there you have my essay on why i love noire so much xD
TLDR: she is the cinamon roll meme, too good, to pure for this world, while being a crazy killing machine at the same time, i love that archetype and her design is so good, and her eng voice actress nails it (i would say both maybe but i have only heard the english version)
