Beyoncé lidera con nueve nominaciones, Kendrick Lamar le sigue de cerca con ocho, y Adele y Brandi Carlile con siete. Cuatro contendientes ingresan a la carrera con seis nominaciones cada uno: Future, Harry Styles, Mary J. Blige, DJ Khaled y Randy Merrill.

We’re kind of repeating artists a little too close together here, but oh well: 

I Know What You Did Last Summer by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

Though officially it was on this album: 

Hi. Let me explain something to you. When I said I was a hopeless romantic, I Freaking Meant It. But my hopeless romanticism is a little bit extreme. It means I soak in all forms of love, angst relating to love, drama relating to love--pretty much anything that has to do with Love in any way, shape, or form. I have ingested many books/movies/tv shows for the express purpose of watching other people fall in (and out) of love. Maybe it’s a problem, but this is 2019 and I am going to live my best life. 

So this song? HOLY CANNOLI. It checks all the boxes. A story interwoven into the lyrics? Check. Two people desperately pining after one another? Check. Someone did something Bad and jeopardized the relationship? Check. A duet where we get to hear both points of view? Check check. Unresolved angst and tension? CHECK CHECK CHECK. 

It’s like if a really good fanfic got made into a song. 

AND THE MUSIC VIDEO. Good gravy the cinematography. Go watch it. Camila and Shawn constantly walking toward one another and not being able to close the distance despite how fast they walk or the size of the steps they take is so blatantly symbolic--I love it. The weather in the video progressively getting worse as the tempo and instruments and vocals of the song builds toward the climactic moment kills my soul in every way I want it to be killed. It’s crazy wonderful and dramatic and angsty. 

Now, on top of that, the song is genuinely a jam. Like, I had a friend who would rock out with me every time this song came on and there was no holding us back. It was physically impossible. It just gets to you. The rhythm and vibes of the song are easy to be hooked by. The vocals are amazing and the lyrics are practically begging you to sing along. Add in the fact that the track (instruments and beat and bass) build during the chorus and the previously mentioned climactic moment and it’s just--I never stood a chance, okay? I can admit that. 

This song makes me want to dramatically walk though the rain and belt the lyrics at the top of my lungs, but I wouldn’t look nearly as cool as Camila does so that’s unfortunate.

Anyway, everyone should listen to this song. 10/10 would recommend.
