오일스톤. 숫돌을 'Wet' 스톤이라고 부르는줄 알았는데 왜 오일이지? 근데 Wet이 아니라 'Whet'이었네? 날카롭게 간다는 뜻이었군요.

게다가 어렸을 때는 숯같이 까맣다고 숯돌인줄 알았는데 '숫'돌이 맞았고 역시 물에 적셔 쓰니까 水-ㅅ돌인가? 생각했지만 이역시 아니었습니다.

일본 공업사 홈페이지를 보니 '砥石'이라고 쓰네요. 砥는 무엇이냐. '숫돌 지' 랍니다. 칼을 갈다보면 생각할거리가 필요하니 아주 잘됐네요.

어쨌든 오일스톤은 연마하는데 쓰는 것은 맞지만 보통 물을 부어 쓰는 연마석과는 좀 다른 모양입니다. 어떤 블로그에 따르면 water stones는 사용이 쉬운 대신 빨리 마모되고 오일 스톤은 반대(덜 마모되고 지저분해짐)라고 하네요.
