Hi there! First off, thank you for all you do on this blog, it's super helpful! Now for my question. I've got a character (we can call him T) who is mixed, Black dad and white mom. For his early life, his dad took him to a family barber for his hair, but then his father dies and his mom remarries. T's stepfather is abusive, and one of the ways I intend to show that is a lack of acknowledgement of the needs of Black hair. The gist of my question is, what could T's hair look like after not being cared for correctly? What kind of hairstyle would he end up with, if he only was allowed to see white barbers who didn't work with Black hair before? For reference, I see him as having 4A hair. Thanks again!
What's interesting here, if I'm understanding your question, is that you're saying that he wouldn't just leave it completely undone, just that he wouldn't be going to a Black barber. So there's an attempt at hair care.
I mean, while I absolutely would never go to a Great Clips myself, I feel like they generally could figure out a simple haircut for boys. Maybe if the white barber is good with designs, he could get cool designs and a proper shapeup.
Really all I can think of in such a specific scenario is the potential for dry, brittle hair due to constant use of products not meant for our hair, under-moisturizing, or very limited looks. No twists or prominent curls for T. Maybe just a regular buzz cut so that no one has to mess with his hair (which I can see an abusive parent doing, just giving up and cutting it all off), with him growing his hair out later on in life as a sign that he's in a healthier environment.

Normally, a shape-up extends the horizontal fringe line to where the outer eyebrows end. My eyebrow span was 'too wide' to do that, so it's left a bit narrower 😅😘
Finally got my free haircut, courtesty of a classmate. 3/8ths inch crewcut with decorating T-lining and a shapeup.

hey my final year of sociology before i got my degree, i took sociology of medicine and fucking lemme tell you:
we are at yet another ethical crossroads soon.
A LOT of medicine since the LAST big ethical shapeup has changed, and there is a lot of prejudice and problems medicine STILL has to rectify. Informed consent currently "exists" but... the social ills of sexism, racism, class issues, and THE POWERFUL NEED FOR MORE RIGHTS TO THE DISABLED have absolutely blown a hole in the idea that things are *done.* they are never done. we are never done. socially conscious medicine at the moment cannot grapple with, for example, for-profit medicine. Pretty much somewhere down the line in every capitalist country or country that utilizes capitalistic methods at some level has a tie to for-profit medicine, and it's so deeply interwoven systemically that taking it apart piece by piece is a complicated endeavor. And if we're going to take the Hippocratic Oath seriously, for the denying someone something they need because they can't pay for it might seriously be a violation of it. Lots of countries are dealing with this by footing the cost somewhere else, but generally speaking we need to at some dismantle the capitalistic effects within medicine or else it will never change and this would become a larger and larger issue somewhere else. There is the racial Dimension to the ethics of medicine, which I'm sure a number of people on here are familiar with, but basically goes along the lines of saying "what cops are to black men, doctors are to black women," and Medicine when it comes to treating women in general is just not as great as it is with men. There's rampant fat phobia, and this pervasive belief that fat is the root of a lot of issues within women, and and Men also, when it might be actually indicative of another thing, not the cause but a symptom and even if it isn't a symptom it is treated like the sole issue.
Personally one of the things that scares me the most is the fact that there are current discussions within modern medical ethics about euthanasia, it is a contentious topic don't get me wrong, but euthanasia is often levied as a solution for those who are suffering beyond their means. In theory that is a noble argument, but in practice when you factor in the ways in which we view disability, disabled people, and the current Paradigm when it comes to Medicine, euthanasia is not something we have any capacity to talk about right now. For starters disabled people do not have a lot of the rights medically or humanly that we would think are necessary. You can easily say that somebody is suffering beyond their means if they are disabled, there are still legal Avenues to do eugenics-based shit, and that's not good, and it just pervasive explicitly in medicine in various ways. Those things are changing, but it's changing very slowly, and it will have to at some point confront the giant wall of medical ethics rethinking that we will have to face at some point in the near future.
Because of how much things have changed since the last medical ethics rethinking, it's probably time to have another one. The one prior to us discussed informed consent, this one's probably going to have to deal with the Hippocratic oath, doing no harm, factoring in informed consent more broadly, and doing socially conscious medicine that actively fights for the rights of people, which will probably be good. A lot of doctors don't like having to deal with the mess that is medical bureaucracy and the countless ways in which capitalism interferes with it, and various other oppressive systems. There's also a lot of things that are medicalized that doctors are taught to deal with that shouldn't be medicalized and should rather be socialized or interacted with and so on. We oftentimes medicate things that don't need to be medicated, but are actually symptoms of a larger issue Within society. The fact that there is a large issue with depression and anxiety, often from rational conclusions, means that it's not something you can easily medicate out, you have to make the system better or people will continue to suffer.
The next big medical ethics debate will probably deal with the fact that we need socially conscious medicine, that doesn't just take it into consideration but actually dismantles the current issues. If cover taught us anything if that medicine can help you heal, but at current it can't remedy the societal ills that make not going back into unhealthy habits impossible. It can't give you a safety net, it can't take away debt, and we are fast learning that probably medicine should not be in any capacity for profit whatsoever. The pharmaceutical industry should be very heavy indication of that issue. Making it for profit means that you can not only easily make a ton of money on something that is very deeply necessary such as pain relief, but you can actually manufacture ills to then remedy, intentional or not.
Some people actively profit off of this, quite a number, and they shouldn't be given power positions of power, and maybe why they don't want to dress it or talk about it, because they may stand to benefit. But largely probably the reason why they don't want to talk about it more is because they've never had to, they've never had to think about it, they were told not to, and that is not good. We don't need to add more classes to a doctor's already extensive need for education, what we need to do is create an environment where medicine is a lot more communicative, socially conscious, and actively avoiding being a for-profit endeavor, because then it will be much more aligned with the Do no harm Axiom that is the Hippocratic Oath. Basically we need to add an addendum to it, do no harm, but take no shit.
Medically speaking, informed consent does not just apply to things you want done to you or for you, it also applies to things that you don't want done to you or things you don't want withheld from you.
I don't think a lot of people realize that, and I don't think a lot of medical professionals want to acknowledge that, because it means they would have to reevaluate the ethics of denying treatment to patients. Also they would have to reckon with their patients' agency and right to self-determination. Both of those things really freak some medpros out.

As 10 Million plus of you know, or may not know my ID photos recently went viral on the internet lol. My 2018 and 2024 IDs caused a frenzy of hilarious commentary on Twitter first and then IG this week. From “he’s a crackhead” to “the difference between doing weed and doing coke”, to “Thats what living in Maryland will do to you”. All quite hilarious to me and those who know me, but I’d like to give some background on the actual factuals.
Never done hard drugs in my fucking life! I was high on weed in the first ID photo in 2018 (clearly). Those that know me know I’ve been sober the last 8 months after choosing to quit smoking weed completely due to me raising my son and how much he mimics everything I do and being high around him just didn’t feel right. From being a heavy weed smoker for the past 15 years to quitting cold turkey, I am extremely proud that I don’t look like that first pic anymore.
Stress has nothing to do with the difference in photos, I am so much happier with life and my family and my accomplishments now in 2024 than I was in 2018. I’m married, own place, own car, family growing and healthy with a thriving business in photography, and loving my job im blessed to do every single day. I was more stressed in 2018 than ever with none of the aforementioned accomplishments.
My eyes change color, they’re a totally different shade lighter than the 2018 photo. My eyes change colors all the time from brown, to green, to hazel, to grey. My eyebrows have always been super thin. People telling me go to the doctor and get my thyroid checked and Im literally the healthiest I’ve been my entire life. Juicing, exercising when I can and eating my vegetables. I think I look healthier with smoother skin. My shocked expression is really due to not having my glasses on and the flash going off before I expected it to because theres no countdown just “turn and take the pic”, Boom.
I needed a shapeup my mustache do look wild lol. My locs are braided and pulling my hairline back further than what it is. 🤷🏾‍♂️
I like my before and after photos and glad I posted it and went Viral. One thing about me, Im probably the most self confident person you gonna run into so nothing someone who doesn’t know me can say thats gonna hurt my feelings or make me feel any less than what I already know I am. And I’m the last person you want to try to make fun of and put on blast cause Im just gonna use it to my advantage and put it on a T-shirt, you really cant pay for this type of Free Promotion. So thank you Twitter, Memezar, OnlyinDMV, DMVHoodzandNewz, you just turned my website views up and sent me more prospective clients. Thank you to everyone who sent it my way; Me, Ash and even my Mom have been receiving DMs and texts all week from concerned friends and family making sure I saw it lol. I appreciate everyone in the comments taking up for me and tagging me. The positive messages and love I received was really the biggest compliments ever. Trust me I saw it all and loved every second of this experience. T-shirts available in the Shop now!
Just another way to prove I’m G.etting O.ut O.f N.egative S.ituations #GOONS!
