flavors self ship ask game! matcha: what kind of gifts does your F/O give you? Are they always buying you little presents or do they invest only in larger items for birthdays or holidays?
Thank you for the ask!
As you didn't specify a ship, I decided to do a small thing for both of them <3
🐓🧜‍♀️SHANE/SEYCHELLES🧜‍♀️🐓
Somehow, the fact that Seychelles knew nothing about land, and was interested in it all, makes finding gifts harder - at least for Shane. Opened up to a World he can't deny, having denied magic being a thing for years of his life, he has found himself anxious about finding something she'd end up being disappointed in.
Didn't matter that a cool rock from a garden would get her to coo and awe, Shane still worried. He knows the saying 'one mans trash is another's treasure' - but who's to say what he thought of 'treasures' wouldn't be 'trash' to her.
He knew it was him over thinking, but Shane's pretty good at that. He drinks to forget, but always seems to remember sadly.
For Seychelles, Shane tends to just find things he thinks would interest her, even if he always seconds guesses it. Whether it be buying a snack for her to try, or something as simple as bringing his pet chicken, Charlie, with him so Seychelles can see one for the first time - these two are more interested in small gestures and gifts.
Not everything is bought. Sometimes it is just a case of Shane finding something small that he thinks will interest her: feathers, stones, flowers when their relationship starts to bloom. He always laughs whenever he remembers the time he saw her taste her first beer - Shane was sure Seychelles was gonna wretch.
Basically, these two are more inclined to find each other little gifts from their Worlds, to explore and share in where they come from. Seychelles has a sizeable collection of Chicken feathers thanks to Shane, and he's running out of places to hide the shells she finds for him.
Essentially, Shane gifts Seychelles pretty much anything - whether it's something he finds/forages whenever he's talking to and from work or the saloon, or sometimes he buys like a food/drink item that doesn't exist in the ocean for her to try. She does the same. Gift exchanges happen pretty much every other time they meet up.
🐓💜SHANE/KEZZIE💜🐓
What do you get the person that can afford literally everything? It's a question Shane is trapped with a lot. Farmer Kezzie, with her St Canard farm, could make bank with a single harvest of Blueberries - he's convinced himself that she only bothers growing things for the fun of it. The constant supply of Peppers was pretty damn nice though.
Point was, Kezzie could buy things whenever she wanted or needed something - a blessing and a curse.
Because of this, Shane tends to put most of his focus into gifts for more important days: her birthday, the Feast of the Winter Star, anniversaries. Those sort of things.
Still doesn't make it easy to find things. Shane overthinks it all. She does so much to him, and the last thing he wants is to get her something crummy; something she wouldn't enjoy.
It was a good thing Pelican Town had a few creative types. Emily who made clothes, Leah who was an artist in every media, and Elliott that could write. Or so he claimed, apparently he struggled with writers block - Shane didn't get it.
But, seeing that Kezzie could just buy whatever she needed when needed, Shane tends to lean towards more custom items. Emily is always happy to sew whatever, and Leah to create. Shane always holds the doubt it's something Kezzie will like. Not because he thinks Emily or Leah's, or anyone's work is bad, just his own self doubts manifesting like a poison he can't be cured from.
If it's not something custom, Shane looks for something Chicken related - she loves them almost as much as he does after all. Or he does just keep it simple. Sometimes, the best gifts for Kezzie is just turning off her alarm and letting her get a couple extra hours of sleep while he takes care of the chickens - no crops in Winter. Or even as simple as just making her a nice dinner. She struggles to look after herself, he struggles to look after himself, so they look after each other.
Basically, Shane, for Kezzie, keeps gifts for more important things. Birthdays, anniversaries, things like that. He tends to go to custom items, or anything more unique; things Kezzie wouldn't just see on a trip to ZuZu City and grab just because. He does do a few little things for her, as said, letting her sleep in so he can take care of things, making her breakfast or dinner depending on what they're up to - but Shane doesn't always see those as gifts per say, and mostly just, the two of them hanging out in a sense. That's just what Shane's like though.

Hey, I don't know if you remember, but, around a month ago I said about how my partner of 10 years finally proposed. Unfortunately, said fiancé passed away last Friday.
Would it be possible to have a hug?
[ @henbytheshore ; to mod, considering the subject matter, I fully understand if you don't feel comfortable posting this publicly, or answering at all. I know death is not something many people like to deal with. I hope you don't mind I sent this at all, and I'm very sorry if it does, thank you]
kezzie… i’m so sorry. you’re welcome to more than only a hug. take anything you need right now. if i can offer it, you can have it.
Tumblr media
i’m never good with words, but for you, i’ll find them somewhere. the least i can do is be present.
the seat next to me at the saloon bar is reserved for you. take me up on that sometime, yeah? i’m here. to listen, to cry on, to talk to… whatever it is, let me know.

“When I stop and think about it... I'm in a good place. My life is pretty nice.”
Portrait of Shane from Stardew Valley.
Shane's my favourite character, and bachelor in the entire game. He's my go to Husband in every playthrough.
I order his character and the story that's told through him; I can't really put into words how much I love him, and how much he's helped me with my own mental health problems. He's a very endearing character that means a lot to me.
Anyway, I'll avoid writing paragraphs of how much I love the Chicken Man, I'm sure no one wants to hear that lmao!
Below the cut is the original sketch, the portrait without the background, and the background by itself.
Thank you to anyone, and everyone, that likes/reblogs! I appreciate it all <3

😭 - A shoulder to cry on (for whoever you like!)
Comfort My Characters! Send me an emoji and a character name and I’ll give my character that comfort!
Decided to write this about Shane and Kezzie <3 This got a lot longer than intended; oops!
🐓-🐓-🐓-🐓-🐓
The Summer wind had begun to blow in again, a faint haze left across the horizon. It was nearly ten, the Sun had only just disappeared below the skyline, as night bled into blue, and the stars became visible once more. Though, even with the Sun finally setting, the air was still hot, and everything was awfully sticky and humid.
Shane hated the Summer.
The insects that wouldn't fuck off, or the way everything clung to his flesh like another layer of skin, or how a simple walk from his home to work would have him sweating like he ran a marathon. He knew he was out of shape, but the sun just made it so much worse.
Usually, he would spend his nights in the saloon, drinking until his liver begged for mercy, and his vision would shift and sway with every staggered step. It was too hot that day, and Gus still had the fire on for whatever reason Shane couldn't even bother to try and fathom. So he retreated to the place he felt most safe, where he could be alone - Cindersap Forest.
He had a lot of good memories there...
However, as he dragged himself to his usual perch, the dock position over the fresh and cold lake, he found another soul there. The newest resident of Pelican Town: Farmer Kezzie. Quiet, yet usually always grinning, Shane had yet to figure out how he felt about the stranger.
Well...stranger was the wrong word really.
He had warmed up to her, quite a bit. Kezzie had always been there for him, a safety net for when he his footing slipped on the tightrope of life. It didn't matter how abrasive he was whenever she said 'hello' to him on her way past to Yoba knows where, didn't matter how badly he tried to keep up the walls, how thick they were, she still opted to pick away at them.
He had shared a beer with her at these very same docks, opened up just a little, about how he felt like he was at the bottom of this hole he just couldn't climb out of. She was there when he spoke about how he didn't have any plans for his future, simply because he wouldn't be around long enough to need them. She had been the one to find him that rainy night, down by the cliff...
Shane shuddered, and pushed that memory away. He was in therapy now, he was going to get better...he was trying to get better.
He stood at the end of the dock, watching her, feeling that strange flutter in his chest that had began to form whenever he thought of the farmer. He silently reminded himself they were just friends, and she'd never find much more interest in him outside of that.
There he stayed, debating on if he should leave her be or not.
On one hand, comfort wasn't really something Shane excelled out. He was awkward, he knew that, and he worried about saying or doing something that would only make the situation far worse. On the other hand, she had always been there for him, and seeing her now... hunched over, clearly down on her own luck, well... it made his heart ache.
People like her didn't deserve bad days...
Glancing to the beer he still held, he breathed out a quiet sigh. He supposed it's better to be alone together, then to just be alone.
The wooden panels creaked as he slowly stepped onto them, each step careful, so he didn't disturb her. The noise caused her head to snap up suddenly, and Shane winced as he watched her quickly wipe her hands against her face. He internally cursed, he didn't know how to handle tears.
But he'd feel worse if he turned away now.
Shane stood next to her, the faintest breeze carding its fingers across them. He quirked his mouth, and eventually found something to say,
"...Hey."
"Hi..."
It was weird to see her without that bright grin she always seemed to wear. It practically hurt to see the pinkness staining her eyes, the way the skin had puffed, how her cheeks were left red and blemished. Shane was quiet, taking every word slowly, carefully, he felt awful for treating her like she was made of glass,
"Uhm...is this seat taken?"
Kezzie shook her head, and gestured a hand towards the space beside her, a silent invitation which Shane took. Old and aching knees bent, as he carefully sat down with her, feet dangling over the edge, his toes a good few inches above the untouched surface.
The Cicadas buzzed, the fireflies danced through the long grass, not a word more was said. Shane knew he had to say something, but, he had no idea what to say. Maybe this was a mistake. He should've just left her be.
"I thought you said you were going to quit...?"
"Huh?" Shane hummed, glancing her way,
"You have beer with you," Kezzie murmured, gesturing to the four pack he'd been carrying, "Thought you said you were quitting."
"I said I was going to cut down," Shane corrected, his voice as soft as hers, "You want one?"
"...Sure."
Shane grabbed one of said cans, the metal cold against his calloused skin, and plucked it from the plastic rings. He held it out to her, Kezzie sliding the can from his fingers, opting to hold it between her own palms. She seemed hesitant to open it at all, content with just using the tip of her finger to idly fiddle with the tab. Shane's own can hissed as he opened his own, but it took a moment before he even sipped at his own.
There they were again, silent, alone, but together. Shane looked to the lake, to their reflection. Kezzie was staring at him back. He could see that familiar sadness, desperation, the silent scream of help, that he saw on his face every day.
"Surprised you're not at the saloon tonight..." Kezzie spoke once more.
"It's too hot to be inside..." Shane shrugged, "I hate the Summer..."
"Me too," Kezzie agreed, "Everything's hot, and sticky, and there's only so many layers you can take off before you're being charged with indecent exposure."
Shane snorted slightly, the faintest blush to his face, "You're not seriously considering that are you?"
"If the heat continues like this, you'll be seeing more Melons than just the ones I'm growing Shane."
The blush on his face deepened, Shane taken a slightly aback by her comment - it just wasn't something he'd expect someone like her to say though. His reaction though, had Kezzie grinning, before she burst out into laughter. It was one of the most incredible sounds he'd heard, and he found himself smiling, even if her outburst was at his expense.
Alas, as fast as it happened, it died down just as quick. Kezzie's laughed softening down into little snickers, before she gave a deep sigh,
"Man... it felt good to laugh today..."
"Yeah?" Shane questioned, "Bad day?"
"Mmhm," Kezzie shrugged, finally opening her can of beer, "Just one of those days where it seems like no matter what you do, the World just wants to beat you down..."
"Mh, yeah, I've had...more than enough days like that," Shane lamented, "Did you...feel up to talking about whatever happened?"
"I don't wanna bore you," Kezzie argued,
"You wouldn't."
"It's my sorrow to carry Shane; I don't feel it's fair to burden you with it when you have your own stuff to deal with it..."
"Heh, yanno, my therapist said that when you 'share your sorrow', you half it, instead of forcing someone to carry it as well," Shane shrugs, sipping his beer, a faint foam moustache left on his top lip, "So, try me."
Kezzie stared at him, still hesitant on her own part. Talking about her own problems was a struggle; she always chose the far more unhealthy option of bottling everything up, letting it cannibalise herself. Maybe that's why she always made sure to be there for Shane, because she knew how much it sucked to feel a constant numbness chewing at your organs. Yet she still made one more attempt to dissuade him,
"It's dumb."
"It's not - you wouldn't be upset if it was dumb."
"You really wanna hear me whining over nothing?"
"I wouldn't be pushing if I didn't want to listen, and it's not whining over nothing Kezzie..." Shane countered, "You know for someone that has always been there for me, you sure are shit at letting someone be there for you."
"Trust me, I know..." Kezzie muttered, eyes rolling slightly, "I guess I've always just been better at listening than talking..."
She lifted her can to her lips, and took a few good sips, wincing at the way the beer made her throat burn. Lowering her drink, she shook her head slightly. She will always prefer Cider.
"Look, if you get bored, or don't wanna listen anymore, I won't be offended."
"Kezzie," Shane was stern in his tone, "I'm not going to get bored with whatever you want to talk about."
"Okay okay," Kezzie, finally relented, "I just feel like I'm worked up over nothing, and that I'm acting dumb because of it."
"You are dumb."
"And you're rude, so we're even."
Kezzie saw his smile, she knew he was just joking around with her. She found it nice, to see Shane himself willingly let his walls down, to actually joke around with her a little.
Another sip of her drink; the burn never got easier. She was glad it didn't. So was Shane, but he never let it be known, as he watched her expectantly. Kezzie kept her gaze away from him, almost embarrassed to feel those green eyes of his watching her every move.
"It started off with my alarm not ringing, so, instead of being up at six, I was up at eight - not the biggest crime, and thankfully I have automated sprinklers, so yanno, annoying but fine."
Shane nodded, though he didn't see why that would be such a problem. Honestly, he wished he could sleep in, even on his days.
"So I waltz outside to go get the Hens, only to see half my crops have been munched on by crows!" Kezzie went on, "I guess my scarecrow wasn't as scary as I thought..."
She huffed. Kezzie loved all birds; even the crows. It didn't stop her from being utterly annoyed by it.
"That's all my melons, gone, eaten, I hope they were tasty," The sarcasm is thick, "Not like Summer is over in like eight days, meaning I won't have anymore time to grow more!"
It was a slow burn of growing frustrations. The floodgates opened; Kezzie went on. Her Hens had enough food, Kezzie noting she would need to swing by the ranch to buy some more hay - Shane decides to spare her, and not point out it was Tuesday tomorrow. At least the Hens were fed today; Shane silently figures he can leave some for her in the morning, if he remembers. He'll make sure to remember. Or point out that JojaMart sell grass starters - the Hens would much prefer that.
She spoke of how she gathered all the eggs she could find, only to trip over the small door frame on the way out - all her Hens' work gone to waste. Kezzie lamented, hoping they weren't too upset.
Then again, she had left the gate open, so they got a nice walk around the farm. Kezzie spent her entire morning chasing them before they got lost in the surrounding bushes, or fell into one of the ponds. Shane nodded his head, his smile never fading - he had many, similar, chicken chasing stories of his own.
"An entire morning, wasted, I got nothing done," Kezzie complained, "And it only gets worse..."
She decided to go to the mines. That fact had Shane on edge. He didn't even realised anyone bothered to travel into them anymore; travelling deep beneath the surface, further into the dark maw of loneliness. He immediately hated the fact she went close to them; a sense of fear rolling down his spine. But his face doesn't even twitch, he keeps that worry buried deep in his chest.
"I was down at least eighty floors."
"Eighty floors?" Shane questioned.
"Mmhm, eighty floors, far far down," Kezzie confirmed, "Where no one can hear me... and that's where I was ambushed. So many Shadow Brutes and Slimes... I had no chance..."
Shane felt himself pale, his blood felt cold. He returned to his drink, a deep gulp that nearly hit his lungs instead of his stomach, sending him into a small coughing fit as he drowned out the feelings. Fuck, anything could've happened after she was attacked. She could've died!
How the Hell is she so calm right now?!
"I woke up in Harvey's clinic, guess someone heard me..." Kezzie shrugged, "Emergency surgery, one thousand gold just for that... then when I went through my backpack, I noticed half my stuff missing - all the Diamonds I found, the coal, the ore, and a further three thousand gold... a day's work, gone, and a stern warning from Doctor Harvey to stay outta the mines for two weeks ...I agreed, only cause I don't want to make him more mad at me... I already missed my other appointments..."
It was probably the most Shane had ever heard Kezzie spoke. It was nice hearing her voice, and for Shane, even more so that Harvey had managed to get Kezzie to agree - even if it was only because she felt bad for the Doctor, because she had annoyed him already.
Shane wants to ask about said appointments; there was a growing worry. He knew he didn't look after himself for a long time, but hearing her do the same just had Shane feel awful. She spent so much time looking out for him; how long had she been neglecting herself...?
She better not have been neglecting herself to look after him...
Shane couldn't dwell on the thought, it was impossible to do so though, not now, not that she had moved closer. Shane felt the weight of her head on his shoulder, her purple hair gently spilling over him. He felt his heart stall for a second, a silent hitch of his breath in the back of his throat. Shane glanced down to her, a faint warmth on his face,
"Buh-?"
"Hm? Oh, is this uncomfortable for you...?" Kezzie asked, a faint wave to her voice.
"No no, it's... it's fine Kezzie," Shane murmured, wishing his heart would slow the Hell down, "Just...didn't expect it."
"Right...right..." Kezzie faintly smiled, forced, but warm, "But well, here I am, with less than two hundred gold to my name, half my crops are dead, the other half not going to be ready until the end of the season, and all my Hens are probably mad cause I dropped their eggs..."
She punctuated her laments with a laugh, strained, wavering. She had been crying before Shane made himself known, and she had managed to hold it back, keeping herself together with nothing but thin threads. Kezzie felt bad enough for making him listen to her petty whining, as she saw it, even if Shane had insisted it was fine.
Taking a deep breath, Kezzie allowed her eyes to slowly shut as she relaxed against him further. She found a lump in her throat, burning, unable to be swallowed down. Her fingers curled against the wooden panels of the dock; she was lucky to not get any splinters from it. She trembled, quirking her lips, gaze flickering up to Shane, who's own gaze was looking at his beer can.
His own heartbeat refused to slow.
"...Hey Shane?" Kezzie whispered,
"Yeah...?"
"Thanks...for listening to me..."
Shane parted his mouth, trying to think of the best thing to say. Instead, he merely shrugs his free shoulder, and murmurs,
"...You're welcome..."
Kezzie gave a small hum, feeling a sting in her eyes. She cursed herself for being so dumb, for feeling the need to cry again. Fluttering her eyelashes, she struggles to keep them at bay, a small sniffle leaving her. Shane looked down at her, concern still there, swelling and flooding him,
"Are... you crying...?" Shane tentatively asked.
"...Yeah..." Kezzie whispered, "S-sorry, it's just...it's nice to feel cared for yanno?"
The crack in her voice was enough to send her over the edge, as she let the tears roll freely over reddening cheeks. Shane cursed internally himself, grimacing. He wasn't good at comfort, at dealing with tears. Shane knew he wouldn't be able to say a word; convinced he'd make it worse. He also knew he couldn't just...not do anything.
Not with her literally crying on his shoulder.
His fingers twitched, Shane tentative, hesitant, as he lifted his arm. He was slow with his movements, sort of expecting her to stop him, or move away - but she didn't. Shane felt his heart almost stall, as his arm rested against her back, and his fingers rested against her arm. He gave a small tug, bringing her in closer. Shane softly rubbed her shoulder, doing what he could to comfort her, even if he wasn't really sure what to do now.
"Yeah...yeah it is nice..." Shane mumbled in agreement.
Kezzie lifted a hand, wiping her face once more. She smiled up at him, remaining against him, snuggling in close. It was way too hot for this sort of thing, but, for a moment, the two of them didn't care a bit. It was needed, earned. Kezzie needed this, needed someone to lean on for once, instead of having everyone lean on her. Shane tilted his own head to the side, until his cheek was on top of her head.
Silence returned to them. There was the buzz of the insects around them, and the occasional faint breeze that was blessed upon them, cutting through the heat. Things were still, things were calm. Kezzie let her eyes close, just letting her tears roll silently, letting things go.
At least she wasn't alone now.
And Shane himself was glad he ditched the saloon that night. Sure, it wasn't great that she was upset, but, he was happy he was there for her, returning all the times she had been there for him. Holding her there, the two settled into a comforting silence for the evening - a good end to a frustrating day.
