What think I of Paul Rudish’s envision Mickey Mouse? Think Spümcø.
Like many Cartoon Network/Hanna-Barbera creatives, Paul Rudish (Star Wars: Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, Sym-Bionic Titan, The Powerpuff Girls Movie) and many members on his team went to Disney Television Animation and turned Mickey Mouse into a hilariously rapid-paced cartoon, with the animation of Mercury Filmworks (Star vs. the Forces of Evil, Wander over Yonder) and many great design talents, including Shakeh Hagnazarian. The sound design by Supervising Sound Editor Robert Poole II at Advantage Audio is also different from his usual styles (The Fairly OddParents, Phineas and Ferb), using plenty of Disney, WB & H-B SFX that the typical Advantage sound designers (Poole II, Heather Olsen, Michael Warner, Robert Duran and Paca Thomas) tend not to use. I wish that Poole II (or someone else at Advantage) did that with SvTFOE Season 1.
In aural terms, I prefer the sound design of Warner Bros. Sound/Audio Circus (Otis Van Osten, Michael Gollom, Bill Keane M.P.S.E.) on Mickey Mouse Works/House of Mouse, with which I grew up), and I like the stylized score on Mickey Mouse Works too, which I kind of miss (with all of Disney TVA’s new shows, I think that a House of Mouse reboot could be in order), but Poole II’s sound design and Christopher Willis’ score prove to be very good.
Here’re those Spümcø creatives who turned this Disney icon into something insanely wacky:
The Late and Great Chris Reccardi (Location Design on “Croissant de Triophe”)
Bill Wray ([Additional] Background Paint on “Springtime” and “The Scariest Story Ever: A Mickey Mouse Halloween Spooktacular!”)
@stephendestefano (Character Design, Seasons 1-4)
@rdaskas (Background Paint on “Ghoul Friend”)
Chris Savino (Directed by/Written by/Storyboard by, “Bad Ear Day”)
Mark Ackland (Written by/Storyboard by)
Riccardo Durante (Written by/Storyboard by)
Also regarding Spümcø, Ren Höek is dressed up in Mickey Mouse fashion in The Ren & Stimpy Show episode “The Boy Who Cried Rat!”, directed by Vincent Waller, and “Ren Seeks Help”, co-directed by Waller as well.
Many of the Spümcø team, as with many “Western” animation projects by popular studios, also contributed their talent to another reboot of a classic cartoon character, The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat. They even went on to be a part of Disney Television Animation (i,e. Bob Camp storyboarded on Suburban Daredevil)!
