Photojournalism Discussion Post
Tumblr media
"Photojournalist Shahidul Alam is silenced during a court appearance."
Tumblr media
"A Havana man sitting near the Malecón (4 mile coastal roadway and seawall) lights up a cigarette after losing a game of chess." ____
My favorite example is the first image. It depicts a journalist who was making a court appearance due to an arrest earlier in the month of this image being taken, and his mouth is being forcefully covered by a police officer.
This photograph visually represents the story in a pretty clear way by showing up-close what is happening, and how shocked the journalist is about the current event. It displays the horror of the moment, and portrays how terrifying it must be to be in a situation like this.
The photograph calls for a change in the way authority handles things and projects itself. This photograph calls out the imbalance of power and corruption in the authority, using this example of forceful silencing to aid that message.

ID: 2 screenshots from an article on artnews.com titled “German Museum Cancels Candice Breitz Exhibition After ‘Controversial Statements’ on Gaza” dated 28 November 2023
Text reads:
“Breitz continued, “I would describe the decision to cancel the exhibition as deeply antisemitic. Like so many other similar decisions that have been made against artists, poets, musicians, theatre-makers and novelists in this country in recent weeks and months and years, it is a decision that casts Germans in a position of judgment over what Jewish people may say and/or think, without allowance for due process, let alone civil conversation. This is very much how Kangaroo Courts work.”
A Saarland Museum spokesperson did not respond to request for comment.
[…]
In October, a Berlin conference about National Socialism, antisemitism, and other forms of prejudice that was being led by Breitz and scholar Michael Rothberg was canceled by a federal agency. The organization said it was “not in a position to lead and moderate this debate constructively” after the October 7 attack, a decision that Breitz criticized as being “short-sighted” in an interview with Monopol.
Other German institutions have called off exhibitions organized by and devoted to people who have made pro-Palestine statements. Shortly after the Hamas attack, Palestinian artist Emily Jacir said a talk she had planned to give in Berlin was canceled. This month, a German photography biennial that was being co-organized by artist Shahidul Alam was canceled because he accused Israel of committing a genocide in Palestine; the biennial said those remarks were “antisemitic.” And in Essen, the Museum Folkwang nixed a portion of an exhibition after that presentation’s curator, Anais Duplan, called for Palestinian liberation.”
End of ID.

“𝑷𝑯𝑶𝑻𝑶𝑮𝑹𝑨𝑷𝑯𝒀 𝑨𝑺 𝑨𝑵 𝑨𝑮𝑬𝑵𝑻 𝑶𝑭 𝑪𝑯𝑨𝑵𝑮𝑬“
Jum'at, 5 Juli 2019 @ Taman Ismail Marzuki.
Merupakan pendiri the Drik Picture Library (1989), the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute di Dhaka (1998), the Chobi Mela International Photography Festival (1999), dan the Chobi Mela International Photography Festival (1999). Ia juga telah menulis beberapa buku, salah satu yang paling terkenal adalah “My Journey as a Witness” (2011) yang disebut sebagai “the most important book ever written by a photographer” oleh John Morris, yang pernah bekerja sebagai picture editor dari Life Magazine.
Agar sebuah foto dapat menjadi agen perubahan, “we must make our work counts”. Buatlah karya kita “relatable”.
“Photographers are the main witnesses”.
**“While photographs may not lie, liars may photograph”. **- Lewis Hine
Pemerintah bahkan menolak mengakui adanya crossfire, walaupun pembunuhan melalui penembakan terus dilakukan.
“The law minister was using the presence of a corrupt police and a corruptible judiciary, to justify a vigilante force that he could control.”
“a quiet metaphor for the screaming truth“.

“It was shut down because they know people feel related”
Last words, “Be Brave and be the Change”.

"[The] camera should be in my hand."
That's what Shahidul Alam, an acclaimed Bangladeshi photographer, educator and activist, said on Aug. 8 as he was being transferred to a police office in the capital Dhaka. Three days earlier, Alam, 63, had been detained, charged with "spreading propaganda and false information against the government" online, under a law the government has repeatedly used to punish criticism against it.
Alam is synonymous with photography in South Asia. In a career spanning more than three decades, he has chronicled his country's tumultuous history, photographing natural disasters, political upheaval, human rights abuses and, recently, the conditions facing Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar. He has also covered stories elsewhere in the region, including places rarely visited by journalists, such as the Maldives.
Just as importantly, he has also served as a mentor, having started the Dhaka-based Drik photo agency, a respected photography school and an international photo festival — collectively providing a foundation to inspire and train a generation of photographers and photojournalists.
Police picked up Alam from his Dhaka home after he appeared on Al Jazeera TV and posted videos on Facebook condemning the government for its violent response to student protests that began in August over road safety. In the Al Jazeera interview, Alam said the protests were largely a release of "pent up" anger over a series of government abuses, including extrajudicial killings, disappearances and corruption.
A court denied Alam's request for bail on Tuesday.
Since his arrest, calls to "Free Shahidul" have come from around the world, from Nobel laureates including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, human rights groups, U.N. experts, photographers, artists and academics. "Shahidul Alam's detention underlines the growing crackdown on dissenting voices in Bangladesh, in a pattern that is visible elsewhere too," says one statement.
"Shahidul has for years been a leading light among non-Western photographers in what he called the 'majority world,' teaching many of us near and far by example, and with his indomitable spirit and dignity," Sim Chi Yin, a photographer with the Magnum photo agency, said in a statement after Alam's arrest. "It's distressing to see this happen to a person who has sought justice for others all his life. "

Update – Bangladesh: Shahidul Alam’s bail hearing delayed further
Tumblr media
On 4 September 2018, the High Court bench set to hear human rights defender Shahidul Alam’s bail hearing, forwarded his bail petition to the Chief Justice for a decision, citing embarrassment. No date has been set for the next hearing in the human rights defender's bail petition. The bail petition was presented to a High Court bench comprising two judges on 3 September, but was deferred to 4 September, when the bench withdrew from the scheduled hearing. In Bangladesh, judges of the High Court can express embarrassment about hearing any case, in order to withdraw themselves from the case to ensure fair and impartial justice is served. However, they can also express embarrassment if they are threatened openly or discretely by anybody. The High Court bench has neither disclosed the reason nor named the judge who expressed embarrassment. This is the latest move that will delay Shahidul Alam’s bail hearing, who has now been held in detention for a month. His bail application was first rejected on 6 August by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court, following which another appeal for bail was filed in the High Court. Shahidul Alam was forcefully arrested on 5 August 2018 on charges of “spreading propaganda and false information against the government”. During his first court appearance on 6 August, the human rights defender informed the Court that he had been tortured in custody. Front Line Defenders expresses serious concern over the repeated delaying of Shahidul Alam’s bail hearings, and reiterates its call to immediately and unconditionally release Shahidul Alam and drop all charges against him.
