Shadow meets an alien from Earth.
1,880 words
♥️
December wind tears through the dark alleyway in the same way air was pushed through the better-ventilated halls of the ARK. It’s harsh and it bites, even for Shadow, covered head-to-toe in deep black fur. It doesn’t help, he’s sure, that Station Square is a seaside town. The wind coming off of the ocean is colder, less forgiving.
To fight the cold, he’s opted for a bit of clothing. He sinks deeper into the child-sized fur-lined parka. Tight black skinny jeans from the discount rack hug his legs. A long industrial-grade chain is clipped to its belt loops via carabiners. He hugs his legs tighter and presses himself harder against the brick wall, chains clinking against the fire escape grates.
Through the howling of the wind, Shadow hears heavy footsteps below him. An ear tilts down to the sound and an echoing voice calls out to him, “Shaddy! I know you’re up there. I can hear your chains clinkin’ around. Get in the house! It’s fuckin’ freezin’ out here.”
“I’m fine,” Shadow calls back.
“Ain’t no way! I know you’re an alien or somethin’, but it’s in the damn negatives. I just closed up the bar for the night so I’m comin’ up. I’m makin’ tonkotsu ramen so you better come in if you want any.”
The owner of the voice, Don he’s called, walks back in hefty work boots to the front of the building without any further pressing. Shadow sighs, deep, then climbs up the fire escape and through Don’s apartment window.
He stands on a futon in a dusty bedroom, boxes piled up in its open closet and on top of the futon. There’s a bunk bed fit snug in the corner with a full-size frame and mattress on its bottom and a twin-size frame on its top with a sheetless mattress. Shadow’s been sleeping in the bottom bunk the past few days, or maybe over a week now. The sheets and blankets are tousled and messy, well-loved stuffed animals line the edge of the bed against the wall. He makes his way out to the cramped and cluttered kitchen. Empty forty-ounce IPA bottles sit neatly on the tops of the cabinets and vintage Coca-Cola posters and stolen street signs decorate black-painted walls.
Don stomps around the kitchen as he works illuminated only by the light from the stove’s roof. His head is freshly shaved and feet bare, donning now a plain, perfectly-fitted T-shirt and loose shorts. His skin is a natural tan. Creamy broth simmers on the stove in a large pot with two packages worth of instant noodles still circular in shape within it.
“This is the legit stuff, none a’ that cheap white people ramen,” Don says, lip quirking just the slightest and chopping the white of a bundle of scallions on a translucent plastic cutting board. He demonstrates how he’s chopping to Shadow, “The white part is what you should use, but it’s good to get a little of the green for some color.” He swipes his work into the boiling pot. “Oh, check this out,” he says, holding out the knife he’s been using. Shadow eyes it carefully. “Japanese steel. Cuts like nothin’ else.”
Don tugs the spraying spout from its spot at the back edge of the sink and turns on the faucet, water hitting the edge of the knife where he aims. The motion is quick jerks, but he isn’t angry. Don just has an aggressive way of moving, like every action is overly calculated and deliberate, like he doesn’t have time for a mistake.
Long, carefully mounted and perfectly symmetrical mirrors line the wall beneath the cabinets and Shadow watches Don through them for a while before making his way to the living room. He hears Don talking to him from the kitchen, “Take your coat off, man, stay a while.” Shadow complies, placing his parka on a chair at the dining table as he passes through the dining room. He sits heavy on the plush leather-upholstered loveseat, chains rattling. A gray cat with a white-furred chest and paws sits with his legs tucked beneath him on the back of the loveseat. Shadow turns to pet him.
When he met Don, it was at his bar, the one this apartment sits above. Don complimented Shadow’s choice of drink, a hoppy IPA Don went on-and-on about the history of. When he asked for Shadow’s name, he’d said, “No kiddin’? That’s my cat’s name. He’s smart, that cat. I have a lot of respect for him. He’s a wild animal, but he just carries himself so regally. It’s really something. I’m deeply fascinated by the creatures of this Earth.” Don always spoke as if he wasn’t from this planet. Like he was just a diligent observer. But he was from this planet, just a normal human like any other.
Shadow, the cat, stands, stretches, and leans forward to bump his head against Shadow, the hedgehog’s cheek. He pets his head with an ungloved hand, scratching under his chin with his claws. Don stomps into the living room holding a glass bowl. He takes a wooden TV tray table from between the wall and an end table and unfolds it in front of Shadow, placing the steaming glass bowl atop it.
Shadow’s pupils widen at his meal, mouth-watering and stomach crying. He hadn’t eaten at all today, and though he doesn’t really need to, it doesn’t stop his appetite. A full pork steak sits on top of the noodles cut into strips with a raw egg yolk in the middle. A pair of finished wooden chopsticks is placed at the bowl’s side. “Smells good, huh? I’m gonna get a beer, want one?” Don asks.
“I’m fine,” Shadow tells him.
“Come on. I’ll get you one,” Don says, heavy steps shaking all the glassware throughout the apartment, “It’s not like you’re drivin’ anywhere tonight. And besides, it’s just one beer.”
Shadow grumbles. When Don returns, he’s carrying two bottled IPAs by the lip of their necks between his fingers and two pint glasses. With a bottle-opener, he pops off the cap of one and starts pouring it into a glass for Shadow, taking care to tilt it. “When you’re pouring you gotta make sure to tilt the glass and pour it against the inside of it like this. ‘Keeps it from foaming.” Shadow’s got a sloppy mouthful of noodles and pork. Dried yolk dots his cheek. “Y’know,” Don starts after he’s seated in the longer couch to the side of Shadow, “I wouldn’t normally take in a stranger like this. But you, uh… You kinda remind me a’ my kid. He’s about your age right now.”
Shadow’s quiet, just slows in his slurps. Don reminds Shadow, too, of a few people. He feels like everything reminds him of everything, his life an endless cycle of reflection without direction. He chases his broth with the IPA in his glass. IPAs have a very planty taste, something Shadow’s always liked, and it’s silly, but it’s because plants remind him of his sister. He finishes swallowing. “I’m over seventy years old,” he says. Don chuckles.
“Well, yeah, sure. But y’said yourself you were frozen for fifty a’ those. And you don’t really age. So you’re like,” he teeters his hand straight in front of him, “Early twenties, yeah?”
“I guess.”
“My kid talked about as much as you do, too. Doesn’t talk to me at all anymore. He’s off somewhere doing something and I got no idea what. Drives me nuts. My fault, though, I guess.” Don looks serious, solemn, lips pursing and eyes looking to the ground but not at it. “So you’re from space. Whaddya think of Earth?” he asks, sitting up, tone shifting light like a switch.
“It’s fine.” Gulps his IPA.
“Fine,” Don laughs, and says, mocking, “fine, fine, fine. Everything’s just fine. Is that really all? Tell me, man, what do you think? I know you’re thinkin’ in there.” Shadow sighs heavy, leaning back against the loveseat and crossing a leg. Chains rattle.
“It’s hard to like.”
“Hard to. You’re trying to like it, but don’t. What makes you try, and why doesn’t it work?” Shadow bounces his leg, impatient, maybe irritated.
“Reminds me of stuff,” he finally says.
“Stuff,” Don laughs again. “What stuff?”
“Everything…” Shadow pauses, “My sister. My…” Ex. “A guy.”
“A guy,” and Don fucking laughs again, and Shadow just doesn’t understand what’s so funny. “You, uh… This guy. He a friend?” And Shadow laughs this time at the idea of calling Sonic a friend. That’s funny. “My son is gay, y’know,” Don continues. “And I kinda get that vibe.”
“Yeah,” Shadow nods, “I’m talking about my ex.”
“Yeah, no, I could tell. So being reminded of your sister and this ex. That’s bad, huh?”
“Not always.”
“What’s the deal with your sister?”
“Dead.”
“And your guy?”
Shadow sneers, “Long story.”
“I got time,” Don says, sitting back in his seat and IPA at his lips. Shadow sits quietly, mirroring Don’s posture and IPA placement.
“I love him.”
“I know how that feels,” Don says, and Shadow winces at his familiarity. There isn’t any way in Hell anyone on this planet could possibly know what it feels like to be like him and love a man like Sonic. “I do,” Don insists without Shadow saying anything, feels like Don’s got his hands wrapped tenderly around his brain, threatening to squeeze. “You may be an alien, but heartbreak hurts the same, I’m sure.”
“Heartbreak, huh?” Shadow says, picking at his claws. “Yeah.”
“So why’d he leave?”
“Why do you assume he’s the one who left?”
“‘Cause you’re like me.”
“I left,” Shadow corrects, and again, Don laughs.
“You really are like my kid, then.”
Shadow bounces his leg. His boot feels heavy. “What did you do to him?”
“My kid?”
“Yeah.”
“I dunno. Held on too tight, I guess.” Don is quiet for a while, an odd thing from him. “Same reason his mother left, maybe.”
Don speaks with a clear-cut sort of certainty about everything, but not this. It’s foreign to him, much like how he regards the Earth and its creatures he marvels at the same way Maria did. Maybe the reason people leave Don is because he squeezes their brains. Maybe Don didn’t listen to the people he thought wouldn’t leave him like he listens now to Shadow, because Shadow can leave whenever he wants. And Shadow wants to leave, because Don is pushy like Sonic and plays his music too loud for someone with neighbors like Sonic. Don has fragments of glass swept under his fridge and too many chairs at his dining table. Don’s house is as cluttered as it is empty. Don neatly packs his baggage into the boxes he tucks away in his son’s old room, and maybe that’s why it’s the one thing he doesn’t speak confidently about.
“I am like you,” breaks the silence. Shadow stands and grabs his parka, throwing it on. “Thanks for dinner.”
“You’re leavin’? Where ya goin’?” Shadow’s steps are quick and heavy on hardwood as he makes for the fire escape window.
“To tell him I’m sorry.” He turns back toward the window once outside of it and calls into it, “You should, too.”
