Here is the final design for the SG-1000 girl! I've decided I want to make her an original character, so her name is Sachiko.

After her first owners, a family of four, kept her for thirty years and eventually replaced her with newer, more advanced consoles, she was sold overseas to a video game collector and met a Famicom named Fuumi who she developed feelings for. Soon enough, she realised she was in a dump after he accidentally spilt a drink on her and believed she was broken. Once she woke up, she realised she had become a human, or rather, a cyborg.

Because of her experience with people and her generally shy, reserved nature, she has become extremely overwhelmed by the changing world around her, feeling undermined by newer consoles with improved graphics. She gets overstimulated very easily.

The Arcade version of Exerion stands as a classic, presenting an intense and challenging 80s space shooter experience. However, its SG-1000 counterpart, while sharing similarities in core gameplay, offers a notably less demanding experience. The game features fewer enemy variations, shorter waves, and notably lacks final bosses at the end of the first loop.

Despite this, it could have been an enjoyable experience, but its visually discomforting elements deterred me from fully embracing this port. The erratic scrolling and confusing environmental design have the potential to induce instant headaches, making ship control a challenge. Maintaining focus amid clouds and other visual elements becomes a battle in itself, exacerbated by the aliens' white projectiles adding to the visual chaos.

Admittedly, I understand the hardware limitations that resulted in these graphical and performance differences. Nonetheless, I strongly feel that improvements in the scrolling mechanism could have prevented such issues, vastly enhancing the gaming experience and mitigating the strain caused by visual inconsistencies.

Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection

Editor Random Gamer Riven, takes a look at the quality of all six included Wonder Boy and Monster World games from the SEGA years, which released on PlayStation 4/5 & Nintendo Switch. Looking at all the extra features and how this new Collection stacks up against the older PlayStation 2 version done by M2 in the SEGA Ages 2500 range.

Included games are: Wonder Boy (Arcade, SEGA Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000) Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Arcade, SEGA Master System) Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair (Arcade, SEGA Mega Drive) Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap (SEGA Master System, Game Gear) Wonder Boy in Monster World SEGA Mega Drive, Game Gear Monster World IV (SEGA Mega Drive)

Not included are the NES / PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 versionS which were done by Westone and Hudson Soft. Some of these game did appear on the now closed Wii Virtual Console, they were also missing from the M2 collection.

This version includes the English releases of the Arcade Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Monster World IV. Both of which didn't surface until after the M2 collection was made. This version includes maps for each game (some of which are incomplete), an art gallery (missing some art from the M2 collection), improved emulation over the M2 one. However the test modes for Wonder Boy in Monster Land & Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair. The debug mode for Monster World IV that requires a second controller also doesn't appear to work. It includes a new rewind feature, which is great for the original arcade Wonder Boy, but it lacks the video replay function seen in the PS2 collection.
