Five years older than Nesta, they met when she had just turned 21 and he was 26, and clicked instantly, being soulmates, and lived a whirlwind romance, marrying in Gretna Green and soon expecting a child together.
Unfortunately, there was a prophecy that the birth of the next Ymir would bring doom to Nesta's branch and whoever joined it. It became true when their daughter Effy was born.
Nesta had a very difficult pregnancy, with heavy pains and was always bedridden, and her mother's berating was not helping. She went into labour for three and a half days, losing most of her blood. She died of childbed fever and didn't get to meet her daughter. The only thing for Elon was to name his daughter, for he felt something terrible watching over him. He went to face it, and was never seen again.
Melinoe, in an effort to save the baby's life, went to their old friends, the Lionettes, and left a note explaining what had happened and begging them to keep baby Effy away from them until it was time to know the truth.
Friends: None (open!)
Rivals: None (open!)
Trivia
She wanted to be a healer and be the one to open the gate, but her mother always refused
Despite being offered to abort the baby due to the prophecy, she declined, wanting to make her dream come true
She wanted to write a letter to Effy, but was so weak and in so much pain, it never got out of her throat
She loved to make potions and curating salves for the sick animals
After her death, her mother persisted for seven years until she gave out due to heart failures
Melinoe fled, travelling and studying prophecies until she showed up at an adult Effy's doorstep, wanting to tell her herself her mother's story

Rewritten
genres: dating simulator, otome, comedy, romance
Did you ever wanted your favorite book character become alive? Of course, you did. So in this game MC has a chance to meet characters from books and even fall in love with one of them (or with every one of them). Because they came out of their books to help MC open her aunt's bookstore in time. You will have a lot of work, but also plenty of time to spend it with your bookish bachelors. You can talk to them, found a place in our world that they would like to visit for a date, and even read into their story - literally - and find more about them.
This game is pretty short, cute, funny and colorful. It is lighthearted and heartwarming, with a tiny bit of drama. The art style is unique, because it differs for every character.
Because a novel is so short, romance feels too rushed, of course. Characters confess love after two days knowing each other. Ok, let's call it love on the first sight.
(yeah, on the first day it is too soon, let's talk about love in two days)
The other problem is that each route alone lacks a conclusion. I think that a little scene in the end would be nice. But after all, if you finish all the routes, you will have a conclusion and some bonus pictures.
MC (Nameable)
MC got a degree in English literature, but now she has a writer's block and in the meanwhile decided to come and help her aunt with the bookstore-opening project and maybe gather some inspiration for writing in the future. Hopefully romance with a book character will help with it.
She is funny, sassy and independent, but kind. I would say that her personality more or less depends on the character she is pursuing
My rating 4/5
Love Interests (MILD SPOILERS AHEAD):
Klaus
Klaus is literally the strong silent type. He is the knight from a fantasy novel and he doesn't talk a lot, but when he does, it is appropriate and to the point. He's really so cute, especially after first date. How can you not love a man, who loves all the creatures, big and small? And also cooks! Definitely a keeper.
My rating 5/5
Dr. Vincent Asimov Nightshade
Nightshade is a [mad] biology scientist from a sci-fi novel. He has seven PhD in botany - and other kinds of fantastic botany. A typical tsundere, and I love tsunderes, scientists and men in glasses. He's a bit of a narcissist, he likes talking about himself. He's sassy, clever but in fact you will find it east to embarrass him, because deep in his soul he's bashful and afraid of his own feelings. So he's confused, but it is a good thing that he will have MC at his side to help him sort the thing out.
My rating 4,5/5
Rosamel
Rosamel is the opposite of Nightshade. He's a poet from a fairy tale and he's in love with love. Sweet-talking, tender and romantic. Prepare yourself for a full-time love bombarding from him.
He seems giddy and airy, but I really loved how bittersweet his backstory turned out. You'll find out why despite his appearance his favorite color is blue and not pink.
My rating 5/5
Amos
Amos is a PI from a mystery detective series that MC liked as a kid. He's working with a bright young detective girl and speaks very fondly of her. So he's the only one whom MC really knew before. He's funny, smart and has got a bubbly personality and a zest for life. There's so many things that will light his interest. And he won't stop talking about them.
For me his story and character were a bit bland, not my cup of tea, but he is a nice guy anyway.
My rating 4/5
Morgan MacAllister (Mac)
Mac is a sea captain from a classic adventure novel which MC has heard about, but hasn't read, because she was intimidated by the seriousness of it. Probably it is a reference to a Moby Dick, though the plot of Mac's book ші different.
He's looking pretty much intimidating and not very talkative. Definitely not a romantic. But if MC chooses to know him better, she'll find out that he has a kind heart and a crude sense of humor. In the past he was harsh to his crew and did thing that he regrets now. But nevertheless now he's caring about MC and tries hard to help her and make her feel comfortable.
My rating 3,5/5
Overall:
Visual: 5/5
Story: 4/5
Characters: 5/5
Romance: 3/5
Originality: 3/5
My Rating: 4/5

( maybe not what you'd expect when Quillheel's color scheme is a desaturated blue and gold, esp since yellow is surprisingly low on my list BKHB )
Song stuck in your head: One Great City! - The Weakerthans !!! ( The driver checks the mirror seven minutes late / The crowded riders' restlessness enunciates / The Guess Who suck, the Jets were lousy anyway / The same route every day )
Last song you listened to: Expert in a Dying Field - The Beths !!!
3 favorite foods: chicken & broccoli alfredo pasta, strawberry ice-cream ( or Neapolitan, fudge or vanilla bean! ), sea-salt chocolate ( or hazelnut coffee if it counts? )
Dream trip: I really, REALLY want to move to Canada to be with one of my best friend and then get my other bestie up there as well so we can live together, and its 100% a future I'm striving for!!! though, ig that doesn't count since it's technically a future housing prospect not a trip... maybe going to a little city in France or visiting family in Florida? I'm not very sure! I've never been a huge traveler, i enjoy a lot of the smaller moments along the way :] I'd like to Maine again eventually
Anything I want rn: i REALLY want to go to the library and the store and get some books & fabric + stuffing so I can make stuffed animals with 'em since I've recently figured out Some aspects of sewing and find it REALLY enjoyable!!!! “ Even in the darkest night, if you strike a match, the shadows will flee. This is a law of nature; the darkness yields to the light, no matter how small the flame. ”- Shaera to Dany
Daenerys looks at the Lady Velaryon from behind her shoulder as she turns to face her, with the green dragon Rhaegal snorting smoke and staring directly at Shaera. The Queen of Meereen slowly nods in agreement shuddering as she recalls the House of the Undying in Qarth, the way shadows grasped and clawed at her. It was only through Drogon that she was able to escape that place alive, leaving it a ruin. Clad in the colors of House Targaryen and a crown of amethyst and three dragons upon her silver gold hair with bells interlaced with them, Dany sits on her pillows. It was an exhausting law of nature, truth be told. Soon, House Targaryen was leaving Meereen and Dragon's Bay behind to begin her conquest of Essos... then Westeros.
After the rest of the slavers were crushed by Ser Barristan Selmy, the Unsullied and her supporters while she was away in the Dothraki Sea, the siege had been lifted momentarily but only enough for them to buy some time with the slavers' remaining soldiers establishing themselves further down the Ghiscari coastal roads. Victarion Greyjoy's Iron Fleet and the magic of the red priests of Rh'llor utterly crushed the Volantene fleet capturing hundreds of ships in the process and Tolos quickly being defeated by Victarion and the Meereenese fleet in Yaros and the Battle of Fire took longer than expected, that is, until Daenerys rode forth to Meereen with all the might of her now united khalasar, sworn to her under Vaes Dothrak. The arrival of the dragon queen and her horselords in such sheer numbers sent many of the slavers' armies into a frenzied panic, with many sellsword companies either deserting or turning their cloaks for her and the masters were forced to return to their walls. The Dothraki considered such a thing a sign of cowardice and they had been proven right.
She had just returned from making quick work of razing Yunkai to the ground and burning Astapor for their insolence leaving Ghiscar and the Skahazadhan open again. Elyria surrendered willingly by sending tribute; Tolos resisted and sent a pitiful excuse of an army up the demon road to blockade the Painted Mountains only to be taken quickly by storm by Victarion and the combined Meereenese fleet and later Yaros while the army was away. Qarth had been a short, bloodless siege for the city of merchants were meek, especially when she flew over the three walls of Qarth on Drogon. She had rejected all peace proposals to execute those who betrayed her including the Pureborn, and the Ancient Guild of Spicers, both of whom wished for her death, and Xaro Xhoan Daxos for the Qartheen had scorned her most when they betrayed her. Xaro, the thief so sick with greed, had told her that the Qartheen loved the clink of gold most of all so after she had her bloodriders drag him out of his palace she gave him all the gold he could ask for by pouring molten gold into his eyes, ears and mouth just as Khal Drogo gave her brother Viserys so many years ago, his face seared inward and spilling at her feet. She would have their complete submission and nothing else. She decreed that the Tourmaline Brotherhood give portions of their wealth to the common people, that all the thrones made of great woods, gold, amber, onyx, lapis and jade be destroyed so that the gemstones and woods be used for her supplies, trade routes and house the poor and seven of the Thirteen must be chosen by freedmen henceforth forevermore and left with several chests of riches, precious jewels and spices, treasure ships, eight hundred ships from the Tourmaline Brotherhood, all thirteen hundred ships from the Ancient Guild of Spicers that she'd taken after executing every single member in the guild, a thousand ships from the Thirteen and camelry, all the things that the Qartheen once denied her she took it herself. New Ghis surrendered shortly afterward and sent an elephant cavalry as tribute; it was wise to do so after all they'd heard. Qarth and her colonies Qarkash, Port Yhos and the island of Qal followed suit. The Jade Gates were hers. Daenerys then used a glass candle to gaze upon Asshai beneath the Shadow and touched the dragonhorn Dragonbinder gifted to her by Victarion Greyjoy after he had told her the dangers of King Euron I Greyjoy, how he'd traveled to Valyria, taken Valyrian armor and glories and riches beyond imagining and his intentions for the kraken to marry the dragon much to her horror, and read books on dragonlore and sorcery given to her by Marwyn the Mage of the Citadel. With every passing day, Daenerys Targaryen felt more like a dragonlord sorceress.
Now she has finally returned to Meereen to consolidate her forces and has destroyed the Sons of the Harpy once and for all and executing her royal husband Hizdahr zo Loraq for conspiracy and treason, sending ravens to every daughter of Valyria save Braavos, proclaiming herself as the successor to the Freehold, and all must submit or be brought fire and blood. She would leave Meereen to bring her enemies to heel. She would fight so that no child would ever know what it meant to be bought or sold, and she had every intention of continuing that fight here and beyond. She intended to marry off the sisters, daughters and cousins of previous khals still fiercely loyal to Khal Drogo's cause to her vassals so they could rule those cities in their husbands' names then have them killed in the frontlines of war, reward those loyal to her and place them in high positions in her armies and households, highborn or lowborn, and forbade the selling of slaves, theft, fighting among the Dothraki, hunting of animals during the breeding season, and exempted the poor and the clergy from taxation.
Daenerys' next destination was westward henceforth to Mantarys then Volantis where she intended to throw the masters she'd spared into moats by catapults before crushing them with siege weapons, use her elephantry to charge her enemies, break their ranks instilling fear and terror in them, fly over the Black Walls and set the Old City aflame and let the slaves revolt against their masters like the red priests preached. Most of the work would be done for her, really. Volantis likely didn't require much of a siege or a battle at all, it was simply set up for failure. High Priest Benerro had made certain of that, the red priest Moqorro had reported, with the way thousands of slaves and freedmen gathered in the temple plaza every night to listen to him scream of bleeding stars, a sword of fire that will cleanse the world, that Daenerys Stormborn was the one who was promised, from the fire of Khal Drogo's pyre she was reborn to remake the world, breaking the chains and liberating the slaves, crucifying the masters for their sins and her dragons were firemade flesh. With the Volantene fleet destroyed in Meereen, they would be unable to defeat her armada at sea and lost any advantage they had, the most prominent sellsword companies were either in Westeros as the Golden Company were currently fighting in Westeros for Aegon VI Targaryen, changed their cloaks to Daenerys or destroyed in Meereen, and the majority of the tiger cloaks followed the Lord of Light Rh'llor, and not to mention the popular support she already had amongst the followers of the red god. The siege would be short. Who knows, perhaps the grand revolution would already begin before she even arrived. The true doom of Volantis was its slaves, for it had more slaves than anywhere else in the known world outside of the recently liberated Slaver's Bay, and with the Masters utterly destroyed, Volantis was now the last major practitioner of slavery from the Bones Mountains to the Sunset Sea. Most of the slaves would know this. The rest would be left unsaid. Volantis and all her holdings along the Rhoyne would fall to Daenerys, with many of the city's elites slain.
After Volantis falls, she would reach a zenith, for there would be no one left on the continent of Essos to put up significant resistance to her after she brought the entire coalition of slavers and the most powerful of the Free Cities to heel. With the common people behind her, a few Westerosi knights, several sellsword companies, the Unsullied, a united Dothraki horde at her back, an elephantry, a camelry, large siege weapons taken from Dragon's Bay and some bought from Yi Ti, her armada, and three massive firebreathing dragons, no one in Essos could stop her. With Volantis and her holdings upon the Rhoyne defeated, she would claim the Rhoyne and sail up the river to capture the northern Free Cities of Qohor and Norvos after the others—the Quarreling Daughters Lys, Myr and Tyrosh—would wisely submit, end slavery and welcome her as House Hightower of Oldtown once welcomed Aegon the Conqueror.
Perhaps there was some level of merit to being raised in the Free Cities with Viserys. Dany had loved seeing the ships that came in and out of Braavos as a child so when she asked a sailor from the Summer Isles if she could have a ride on one, the man kindly agreed, and it was one of the most lovely experiences in her life but when she came back to port, Viserys was furious and she'd woken the dragon as he pulled on her hair, screaming that that man could have been one of Robert Baratheon's assassins and he'd kept a closer eye on her ever since, and she'd been grounded in the Sealord's palace for a month. The girl didn't necessarily mind, however, because she could play with the animals in the Sealord's menagerie. She remembered begging Viserys to attend the Festival of the Unmasking and he accepted once they'd received Ser Willem Darry's permission. Dany had worn a dragon mask of crimson and ebony fabric and purple silks that night while she had fun amongst the common people. That was one of the rare times that she enjoyed her girlhood. She'd loved to sit under the cherry blossom trees in Illyrio's manse in Pentos, where it was said that he'd gotten them from the fabled lands of Yi Ti. Dany recalled absolutely adoring the painted glass artisanry, the Myrish lace dresses but most importantly how she desperately wanted to attend academy to learn more about the world, but Viserys thought it would be too great a risk, but in subtle rebellion, she would sit closely nearby when a class was taken outside and listen very carefully. She remembered Viserys having them dye their hair with Tyroshi dyes in multiple different colors in shades of blue, red, green, indigo and even purple to always be one step ahead of Robert Baratheon's assassins. It'd taken his pride but it was better than having their throats slit; she'd wondered if the Tyroshi would make an intricate set of armor for him one day. She barely remembered Lorath and Norvos save for the freezing temperature, mazes created by the mazemakers and the three beautiful bells. Dany recalled having watched a ritual sacrifice to the Black Goat in Qohor in horror and fascination. She used to play in the Rhoyne in on one very long and hot summer day with other children while remembering being absolutely in awe with the Long Bridge and the Black Walls of Volantis while they were under the protection of a noble Volantene family known as the Qoheros, who were heavily involved with the gold and spice trade in the Far East and having three separate manses, one within the Black Walls, one in the city of Volon Therys and the last in the city of Valysar. She remembered playing on the beaches in Lys, running for hours along the sand under the palm trees and into the clear blue waters, and on the rare occasion, she'd managed to get Viserys to make castles of sand where they'd make their ancestral homelands in the sand and to come play with her in the water as she laughed when he'd carry her on his shoulders pretending she was the Queens Rhaenys or Visenya on dragonback; it had been one of their only fleeting happiest moments.
Using her knowledge of the cities and the magisters, archons, and merchant princes who once welcomed the last Targaryens in their homes (only for them to shut them out the longer Robert Baratheon the Usurper reigned) to her advantage, she intended on splitting her forces into two to strike northern and southern Essos at once before the rest of the smaller slaver cities formed another alliance against her. While Daenerys and her main host took Volantis, the Dothraki horde would ideally take both Qohor and Norvos. Daenerys had need for the beautiful colorful armor for her Westerosi knights and sellswords said to be superior to the armor made in Westeros and unrivalled Valyrian steel forges of the Qohorik, for they were the only ones in the world to this day who still possessed the knowledge on how to rework Valyrian steel. Archibald Yronwood had told her that the late Quentyn Martell's mother was Mellario of Norvos and she'd intended on sending Gerris Drinkwater home to Dorne with Quentyn Martell's bones while Archibald Yronwood stayed behind with her to give the Norvoshi noblewoman the news of her son's death intent on winning her and her ex husband Prince Doran Martell of Dorne's allegiances after explaining everything that had happened with Yronwood as her personal witness. Lorath did not practice slavery so she had no need to march further north, the Lorathi along with Saath the last city of the Sarnori people would submit to her rule without any complaints nor objections; she'd intended to use the famed scythed chariots pulled by teams of bloodred horses and driven by both men and women of Sarnor for it was custom for men and women to make war together; the kingdoms of Sarnor and the Valyrian Freehold were once allies, perhaps a renewal would be beneficial. Pentos had no army. It would offer no contest, though she had every intention of paying Magister Illyrio Mopatis a visit after the words that Tyrion Lannister had told her about his treachery. She would give Pentos to the Tattered Prince and ideally Tyrosh to Daario Naharis. The Three Quarreling Daughters would likely have little if any sellsword forces left to defend them and if she played her cards right, she would make the Lyseni family of Rogare powerful both in Lys and in Westeros as they had been centuries ago in the Lyseni Spring after the Dance of the Dragons, for her ancestor was no other than Larra Rogare. It was wise to have more than one financial center for a country as the Rogare Bank and Iron Bank were long ago, too. King's Landing prospered due to the Rogare Bank and increased trade with the Free Cities of Braavos, Lys, Myr, Pentos, and Tyrosh, and other cities and towns of the Seven Kingdoms greatly benefited as well, including Duskendale, Gulltown, Hull, Lannisport, Maidenpool, Oldtown, and White Harbor, and with the financial debt caused by the Baratheon Dynasty, it would be wise to bring more trade back to Westeros. After her conquest of Westeros was over, she had every intention of making trade in Westeros flourish once more. Perhaps she would begin her network of spies in Lys with the help of Daella Velaryon. Myrish lenses would be critical for her armies and scouts, too. Braavos was her final destination in Essos. House Targaryen owed a great deal of gratitude for the Braavosi, particularly the ailing Sealord of Braavos, and she'd have need of the Iron Bank; perhaps she could hire a faceless man or two. She had no intentions of using her armies nor her dragons on Braavos. Most of all, though, Daenerys Targaryen wanted to see her childhood home, that house with the red door and the lemon tree one last time before sailing for Westeros.
She'd already had plans for Victarion, the Iron Fleet and her armada to sail around Valyria while having already sent one of her bloodriders Aggo with a large section of her khalasar to threaten Qohor in the north while her main host of sellswords, her legions of Unsullied and freedmen, her two other bloodriders Jhogo and Rakharo and the vast majority of her khalasar and her dragons crossed the demon road she'd intended on renaming to the dragon road by right of conquest. With Yunkai and Qarth defeated, Daenerys intended to march across the dragonroad to defeat the last of the slavers' coalition. The Mantaryan army would be crushed and the city would fall soon after; she would punish the leaders of Mantarys for executing her envoys, leaving Volantis open. The Dosh Khaleen already called her The Stallion That Mounts The World whom her son Rhaego would have been before the Mother of Mountains and the Womb of the World after slaying her rivals Khal Jhaqo and Khal Moro with dragonfire avenging Eroeh and showing the Dothraki that she indeed was the Unburnt and uniting those who gathered in the Khalar Vezhven all into one khalasar.
She would never abandon her quest to end slavery in favor of the Seven Kingdoms, the slavers' vile retribution had done nothing but harden her resolve and Daenerys realized upon the Dothraki Sea that slavery must be ended everywhere root and stem before sailing for Westeros. Upon the Dothraki Sea, she knew that she was above all else a dragon, not meant to rule Dragon's Bay nor Westeros, but all of it, she was Valyrian and of the blood of Old Valyria and as such she would claim all of the realms of the old Valyrian Freehold and then Westeros like her ancestors Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya Targaryen the Conquerors. This time, however, it was for a much nobler cause.
Daenerys was finally ready to leave Meereen and Dragon's Bay behind with a set of instructions for Skahaz mo Kandaq the Shavepate who she'd commanded to stay behind with her trusted Meereenese officials Galazza Galare the Green Grace of Meereen and several of her Brazen Beasts in the city after sending her cupbearers home to their families and pyramids. The Ghiscari and the Qartheen were now her vassals and Volantis was next. Dany had taken both Daario Naharis whom she'd recently freed in Yunkai and Irri into her bed that night to relish in their victory.
The armor and saddles she'd commissioned Tyrion for her dragons were just about complete and she'd need to talk about breeding them with him at some point. The ships in her armada were unlike any other, built like swan ships and a combination of techniques of both the Velaryons from their Summer Islands heritage, the fastest ships in the known world and the Greyjoys from the Ironborn reavers. Incredibly quick upon the open seas, it would greatly benefit her and her armies.
Dany would miss these gardens, her persimmon tree and the view of Meereen. The Red Keep of King's Landing was her true home, however. Drogon and Viserion flew above the Great Pyramid and over the armada that had recently just been completed, the red three headed dragons on black sails accompanied by ships of the silver Velaryon seahorse on teal, great ships of red Celtigar crabs on white, ships of the Greyjoy kraken on black, ships of the golden Tyrell rose on green and ships of the red and yellow Martell sun and spear on orange making her heart swell with proud joy.
She'd invited Shaera Velaryon who'd been the closest thing she ever had to a mother and one of her fiercest supporters since the beginning to her gardens in the queens' apartments to discuss important matters before they set sail westward to Volantis.
❝I have decided that as a reward for your loyalty to House Targaryen, I will grant House Velaryon and House Celtigar access and a base of its own in the Jade Gates as your ancestor Corlys Velaryon the Sea Snake and their ancestors sailed past them centuries before to contact Yi Ti, Leng and beyond to bring eastern trade back to Westeros. Now... Lady Shaera, do you perchance recall the House of the Undying in Qarth?❞ the Khaleesi asks, hoping that the other woman did, because it left bitter memories. The Warlocks were not forgiving, yet while she was in Qarth they were no more. ❝The warlocks were trying to consume me... but in that house of dust I received many visions. One of them... I recall discussing it with Ser Jorah. My brother Rhaegar stood with the Princess Elia Martell with my nephew nursing. He said that his son Aegon was 'the prince that was promised and his is a song of ice and fire' and 'there must be one more, the dragon has three heads'...❞ Rhaegal crawls forward, neck lowering slightly, bronze eyes changing from contracted slits to dilated slits and gives a friendly chirps as a greeting, almost as if asking for pets should Shaera be bold enough as the sun's rays illuminate his scales an emerald sheen, tail lashing. Daenerys looked visibly confused, her brows furrowed. Quaithe's visitations didn't help matters either.
❝I've half a mind to bring it up to Marwyn the Mage of the Citadel but I ask you first. You once told me you served my mother the Queen Rhaella Targaryen. You knew my brother well. Did Rhaegar ever speak to you of such things when he was alive? Lord Tyrion tells me that there is a pretender waiting to take my throne in Westeros as we speak. According to him the exile Griffin Lord Jon Connington assists him and Magister Illyrio Mopatis of Pentos has manipulated and lied to me, raising this pretender in secrecy and safety while he sold me to Khal Drogo. He claims to be my nephew Aegon VI Targaryen from the grave.❞ Her voice wavered with pain and venom. She had always wanted a family for so long she would've done anything for it. Was this truly her nephew back from the grave? Rhaegal screeched, several rows of teeth peeking out from his gumline as he growled, taking to the sky to join his brothers, ❝I believe that Rhaegar was right. The dragon has three heads. Three riders for three dragons. Two husbands, perhaps. Long ago, as I'm sure you know, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and the Blacks called for dragonseeds, Targaryen bastards and descendants to ride other dragons to war promising knighthood, lands and wealth to anyone who would master a dragon. I intend to do the same. I may be their mother, but there has never been a rider who mounts more than one dragon; I will require control over the other two dragons if my conquest of Westeros is ever going to succeed like Aegon and his sisters have before me. Lady Shaera, whom would you suggest be capable of riding Rhaegal and Viserion? Whom would you suggest would be capable of such a task? I am the last trueborn Targaryen.❞

Is it so far from madness to wisdom? Chapter 10
Summary: Jon's (too brief) return to Runestone.
Chapters on Tumblr
AO3 Link
XxXxX
Jon took little with him when he returned home, traveling with just a few saddle bags on the Cannibal. They did not go along the coast, despite it being the easiest and most direct route, and instead turned inward to observe the nearby kingdoms before cutting back towards the Vale.
He stopped first to pay his respect to Lady Jeyne Arryn, with gifts he’d brought from King’s Landing for her and Jessamyn. While her position was too precarious for her to be of much help and she wasn’t about to fall out with House Targaryen, having the actual favor of one’s liege could never hurt.
They insisted he stay a sennight, which he gladly did, and feasted him the night after his return when he was well-rested (and no longer covered in the stench of dragon). If he were only Maegon, he thought they could have a nice married life, Jeyne and he doing their duty, Jessamyn and Jeyne able to stay lovers, and perhaps him finding a “favorite” among the lordlings or knights he were trustworthy enough for it, to avoid any possible bastards.
He took care never to let even a suggestion of a potential betrothal come up for very long. Guiltily, he gave the impression he was hoping for Helaena for a bride, hoping that no one present was the sort of gossip to people in King’s Landing about it.
It would be a good choice, he realized as he dwelt on that. In truth, he had hoped to perhaps use his newfound connections to Dorne to secure a marriage that would start to loosen the tensions between the Seven Kingdoms and their southernmost neighbor. He had not considered Helaena, but could not let the idea go after having it.
They would never be lovers he doubted she would ever want such a thing, and he did not think he would have any romantic interest in her as she was too different from anyone he’d been interested in during his last life. However, knowing that Alicent would never betroth her to Jace, it would remove her from the Greens’ cyvasse board. Aegon would surely have to marry a non-Valyrian for an alliance, perhaps even one of the Baratheon daughters, which would result in his children looking less Valyrian in coloring just as Rhaenyra’s heirs were.
He was steadily approaching his majority, therefore as awkward as thinking through such things made him feel (one of the few advantages to being a bastard in the last life was that a betrothal was likely to only come much later if at all), he knew he would have to add that to his planning.
Certainly he needed some ideas before Daemon tried to force a betrothal on him he definitely wouldn’t want.
After saying his goodbyes to Jeyne and her court, Jon finally continued to Runestone. The Cannibal landed on the field for the dragons and only stayed long enough for Jon to retrieve his bags because he was bribed with a large sheep. After a mental nudge, he flew off to his den under the cliffs, leaving Jon to the human aspects of his home.
He took a moment to himself, first, breathing in the fresh air, staring up at the clear sky. For now he could relax as much as he ever could, safe from most of the machinations of the court for six whole moons.
***
When Laenor came to Runestone, he did not come alone. With him were his mother and father. Rhaenys flew beside him on Meleys while Corlys had left earlier by ship, but docked at the nearest port a few hours after the others had arrived.
House Royce was powerful and wealthy for the Vale (though few in Westeros were as wealthy as the Sea Snake at this point in history) and Jon did not mind hosting them for the moon they stayed. He feasted them on local delicacies and imports from Braavos and Lorath, the only ports in Essos that the Velaryons weren’t better situated to trade with and that, from tales of Corlys’ adventures, Jon thought he might enjoy.
As a boy, Jon had dreamt of being Aemon the Dragonknight or Daeron the Young Dragon. As a man, he’d wished he could be Cregan Stark for more than simply his skill with a blade. He’d come to see Corlys Velaryon, too, as a historical figure to respect.
Some Maesters would cast him as a villain, as greedy and grasping, but Jon thought that discounted his great deeds. And Princess Rhaenys’ very real claim to the throne.
If they’d had a man truly like Corlys during the Long Night, Jon thought parts of it might have gone much better. Aurane Waters had been as close as they’d come and his bastard status had always worked against him in Westeros, just as being Valyrian during Robert’s reign had, despite House Baratheon’s own bloodline.
But wonderings like that, he knew if he dwelt on it too long, would simply lead him into questioning whether a man like Corlys Velaryon could have existed in his time, and then a thousand other questions he could never know the answer to.
“If you were older, I would accuse you of trying to seduce me,” Corlys joked during a private dinner when Jon had a hard liquor from north of the Wall (acquired through mostly legal means) brought out for him.
Laenor choked on his drink, his face aflame as he stared at his father incredulously, and Jon had to bite his lip to keep from saying the first, and second, thoughts that came to mind.
“Once I am older,” he settled for, winking towards Rhaenys, “you’ll know I’m seducing you.”
His father’s cousin laughed, hand settling on Corlys’ thigh. “My husband is known for his adventurous spirit.”
“And has surely aged like the finest of wines. Laenor could only hope to be so handsome.”
Laenor covered his ears with his hands and ducked his face against the table. “I’m not listening to this-this blasphemy.”
“I’m afraid your parents know what coupling is, cousin, certainly better than a boy of two and ten.” Laenor may have whimpered then and Rhaenys and Corlys both were too amused to put a stop to the joking.
Their dinners were much different from the ones he had with the Targaryens in the Red Keep. Even when it was only Rhaenyra and her family and allies or Alicent and hers, there was always a tension there, a need for a certain type of decorum among the older members.
What he wouldn’t give to have a maester dose Alicent with something for her nerves.
Rhaenys, Laenor, and he went flying often, and all four of them went out by ship a few times, Corlys seemingly entertained by teaching Jon terms and techniques he thought he should already know (trying to emphasize that his was not a seafaring House only led to Corlys listing off the Velaryons whose blood flowed in House Targaryen).
During their stay, the part of Jon that was little more than a boy kept making him wonder what it would be like if they were his parents or grandparents, made him wish Maegon had been older so he could have been the one to wed Laena.
The last week of their stay turned sour, as though Jon’s thoughts had brought it on, when news came that Daemon and his family were returning to Westeros so that his twin daughters could be presented to their families. The others were ecstatic and Jon could not resent them for that, doing his best to hide his mood as he saw them off to Driftmark for the year.
Another raven, on the tail of the first, was more direct: Daemon all-but ordering Jon to return to the Red Keep more than a moon early so he was there to meet them. Both their parents being dragonriders and perfectly capable of getting to Runestone in a short amount of time mattered not.

After the United States entry into World War II and faced Japanese maritime superiority in the Pacific, Alaska was vulnerable to attack. The only means of supplying military forces there was by air or sea, both of which were vulnerable to Japanese interdiction. With the agreement of Canada, the U.S. government moved on plans to build an overland supply route from the Canadian railhead and road junction town of Dawson's Creek in British Columbia, across Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska. Work began on 8 March 1942 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) - along with civilian contractors and Canadian military personnel - with the objective of completing at least a primitive "pioneer road" before the onset of winter. The need to finish accelerated when Japanese forces invaded the Aleutian Islands in June 1942. Working from both ends toward the middle, the engineers had to construct the road over inhospitable terrain that included the Canadian Rockies, forests and tundra in climates that ranged from 70 degrees above to 70 degrees below 0 f. The leading bulldozers of the converging 18th and 97th Engineers met in the vicinity of Beaver Creek near the Alaska-Canada border on 25 October 1942, and was officially dedicated on 20 November. The Alaska - or ALCAN (Alaska-Canada) - Highway was open to civilian traffic after the war. DID YOU KNOW The Army engineers built more than 200 bridges and 8,000 culverts along the route of the Alaska Highway. In the segregated U.S. Army of World War II, three of the seven Engineer regiments in the Provisional Engineers Brigade were all-black, or "colored" units. Of 10,607 U.S. Army Corps of Engineer (USACE) soldiers who worked on the road, 3,695 were African American. #Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC #AlaskaHighway #thisdayinarmyhistory #ArmyEngineers #CorpsofEngineers Posted @withregram • @armyhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpilllyui7H/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Breakfast at your hotel, transfer to Cairo International Airport to fly to Sharm El Sheikh, free day on beach and overnight in Sharm.
Day 7: Egypt Easter Tours, Sharm – Blue Hole
The Blue Hole is one of the most famous dive sites in Dahab. It is located on the eastern part of Sinai a few kilometers north of Dahab; it is a kind of cave, around 130 m deep, accessible from shore. The arch, which connects the Blue Hole to the open sea, starts at around 56 m depth. Enter the water from the beach. It is marked "easy entrance". Cross the hole and leave it through the exit at 7 m. The Blue hole hardly offers corals contrary to the beautiful external wall. The coral growth and its splendid colors are breathtaking. Descend there to your chosen depth. Make sure you stick to a depth well within your ability! On your way back up, search for the rare red anemone in 10 m depth. It is also possible to make an alternative dive just north of the Blue Hole, along the rocky coastal path and enter through a gap in the shoreline rocks. This is done one diver at a time. Divers can then drop down an enclosed chimney in the reef exiting at 30 meters or so onto the sheer wall. The reef is near vertical at this point and as you head south (right shoulder to the reef) you'll come around an outcrop which makes for some fantastic silhouette photographs looking up towards the sunlight. The reef wall is home to lots of clownfish anemones and the blue backdrop makes a great viewing point for trevallies, jacks, barracuda and possibly white-tip and grey reef sharks. As you travel south and ascend you will come to a colorful hard coral slope at around 10 meters, which leads up and over at 6 meters into the blue hole pool. It is best to spend most of the dive on the outside of the reef as the inside pool has little in the way of coral. Use your safety stop to either swim across the pool or around the edge (left shoulder to reef) until you reach the small wooden jetty and exit. Currents can be strong, usually north to south, on the outside of the reef so the northern entry point is often a good option, then drifting down to the pool with the current. Take care not to miss your exit, although if this does happen simply find a safe exit further down the shoreline and be prepared for a walk in full kit. After this fantastic dive, we will take you back to your hotel in Sharm El Sheikh.
Day 8: Egypt Easter Tours, Beach
Enjoy the hotel’s facilities, recline on the beach soaking up the sun and discover your surroundings! If you are interested in further activities, just check out our excursion program for Sharm El Sheikh, at night transfer from Sharm to Taba border to start your Jerusalem Tour.
Day 9: Egypt Easter Tours to Jerusalem
In the early morning you will move towards the Israeli border, the gate to the so-called ‘Holy Land’. On the shores of the Dead Sea we will make a stop for around 90 minutes; relax or go swimming - the extreme salinity will even allow you to float without any movements. In Jerusalem we will take you to the Mount of Olives. You will enjoy a fantastic panorama view over the Holy City. Then we will start our tour, visiting Jerusalem’s holy sites of Christians, Muslims and Jews. First of all we will show you the Wailing Wall / Western Wall, the last remaining piece of the Great Temple, the most important Jewish sanctuary, a praying and pilgrimage site for Jewish believers who put prayer notes with their wishes and needs into the wall’s cracks. If the Temple Mount will be open to visitors on the day of your visit, you will ascend it to see the Dome of the Rock, one of Islam’s main sanctuaries, built already around 700 AD, and the Al Aqsa Mosque, the third most important mosque in the world (both from the outside). You continue your trip with a walk through the Souk, the Arabic marketplace and then walk along the ‘Via Dolorosa’, Jesus' painful ‘Way of Suffering’; in its end we will arrive at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre / Church of Resurrection, where Jesus is said to have been crucified, buried and finally resurrected. Then we will head to Jesus’ birthplace Bethlehem. You will see the Church of the Nativity, constructed above the Grotto of the Nativity where he is supposed to have been born. Passing by modern Jerusalem we will then head back to the Egyptian border and finally to your hotel in Sharm.
Day 10: Sharm - Optional tour to Colored Canyon
Breakfast at your hotel, free day for optional tour to enjoy safari trip to Colored Canyon near Nweibaa, its walls, which reach up to sixteen stories, are easily the most colorful and intriguing rock formations in all of Sinai. They were created by the erosion of water upon sandstone and limestone. In some places the deep coloration of rocks gives the canyon walls a prismatic and metallic sheen; in others, the stone is so smooth that it appears soft and pillowy. Overnight in Sharm El Sheikh.
Day 11: Sharm El Sheikh - Departure
You will have breakfast in the hotel. Our representative will pick you up at the reception and transfer you back to Sharm El Sheikh Airport for your final departure; we will take you to the airport three hours before your plane will leave. so the @thebreakfastgod posted these excellent looks yesterday and then I listened to “Test Flight” from the How To Train Your Dragon soundtrack for two hours and entered a fugue state and this happened
It’s hard to hear.
Between the band doing their best to egg the crowd on, the shouts and jeers and chants from the stands, and the blood making the ringing in her ears pulse a techno beat Kara can barely make out that Alex is speaking. Sam knocks their pads together, raising a brow when Kara meets her eye. A thumbs up with her good hand, a knock and grimace back around her mouth guard is all she has breath for at the moment. Plus Alex is halfway through her motivational speech. She’d hate to interrupt now.
“- and fuck Gotham thinking they can steal this game!” Alex is yelling now, more than her usual bark. Her eyes burn as she looks around the huddle. “This is our house, our game, our title!” The team growls their agreement around her, louder and louder with every word out of their quarterback. “We’re too far to kick and fuck stopping the clock anymore.” Alex locks eyes with Kara.
Black face paint smears down her cheeks from sweat and Kara knows for a fact Alex is two seconds away from chewing through another mouthguard this season. Kara’s own head throbs. Her wrist aches something fierce from that last tackle. It’s definitely sprained; maybe even fractured since she’s pretty sure she can’t move her thumb. But her sister is giving her the same look she used to when they were kids right before giving the neighbor boys hell.
And Kara feels like she could fly.
“Run the route,” Alex says, steady and firm. Kara nods. It’s Sam’s turn to get an order as Alex barks out the play - “Super Reign!”
Their yell is almost immediately swallowed by the crowd as they break the huddle. The techno ringing in her ears picks up again, beating faster as her pulse races. A quick glance up at the board only makes it worse. Twenty-three to twenty-seven, Gotham. Third and Ten. Fifteen seconds of play left in the game. And the play clock counts down underneath it all.
20…
19….
She knows she needs to focus, needs to line up, needs time to set in order for the play to work. But Kara stands unmoving from where the huddle broke and scours the crowd.
It’s dumb. She’s wasting time. She said she wasn’t going to come - she never comes to games. All noise and drunk bros and middle-aged alumni reliving their glory days through adrenaline filled kids slamming into each other on gridiron field… but Kara still searches.
15…
14…
“Danvers! Move it!”
Brainy’s obnoxious green hat sticks out in a sea of NCU blue and white and Gotham black and gold, Nia hopping from foot to foot next to him. They’re tucked about halfway up the stands behind the home bench, almost obscured by the giant frat bros in front of them. But Kara can just make out the hint of a blue and white beanie, crammed down over dark hair and a maroon scarf pulled up over what Kara knows is an anxiously bitten lip.
Lena came to watch.
12…
11…
“Kara!”
She’s half in position when Alex turns to spit fire. The maniacal look is back in Alex’s eyes as she calls out nonsense. Gotham on the other side of the line doesn’t even twitch. Kate Kane’s mouth moves in a smug sneer, taunting Sam with whatever trash talk she’s come up with between plays.
7…
6…
Sam tilts her head over her shoulder to meet Kara’s gaze.
5…
“Argo!”
Kara watches Kane’s mouth stop mid-word as Sam sprints backwards towards the pocket. Kara’s almost halfway to the line herself before Alex finishes the word. Her feet set, same time she knows Sam’s do behind her. One second. Two. Gotham’s golden helmets swing back and forth trying to track the last minute change of position.
“HIKE!”
The ball snaps and Kara’s over the line. No flag, no whistle. She’s free.
Time starts ticking down what little’s left in the game and Kara knows this is it. In the corner of her vision she sees the line shift. X’s and O’s run colorful arrows as the play runs in her head. A “fake” shovel from Alex to Sam. Gotham takes the bait, following the quarterback as she breaks towards the sideline, trying to stay in the pocket. Kara charges ahead. For a moment, Montoya’s in front of her, confusion plain behind her face mask as she watches something happen behind Kara. It’s just a moment. Kara’s already blowing past, counting in her head.
3… 2… 1…
She looks back just in time to see Sam launch the ball. Out of the pocket and miles away from the nearest tackle, Sam’s throw is a thing of beauty. An absolute rocket of a pass. One Kara would normally sit back and watch in awe and appreciation if it weren’t for the fact that her lungs were burning with the effort to push her body to the limit to catch up.
She’s not worried about being caught. Kane’s the only one with the speed to catch her and Kara’s pretty sure she’s fifteen yards back and away. Nothing between her and the rapidly approaching end zone but open field.
Just have to catch it.
The ball arcs down. Kara reaches up, hands flexing open. Her wrist pulses in protesting agony and suddenly something clips at her heels – Kane? Kara doesn’t look so much as shifts slightly to see a flash of black and gold barreling down on her.
And it’s brief. Only a second. But the check on Kane makes Kara fall the barest bit behind the ball flight path.
It’s just out of reach. Sinking closer and closer to the field. Kane’s almost on her and the end zone is right. There. Kara tries to go faster, tries to push off harder as she runs but there’s just not… enough… time.
Somewhere behind her Sam and Alex scream. The ringing pulse in her ears drops away and the crowd holds their breath.
Kara dives across the end zone line.
Later, they’ll tell Kara how Kate Kane ran like something possessed to catch up with her. They’ll show her replay after replay of her fingers tipping the ball back into the safety of her sticky palm, Kane dives for Kara’s ankles. They’ll ask her over and over again how it feels to make the championship winning catch with only one hand and a leap of faith.
But lying there in the grass, ball held up over her head and the fans roaring so loud she can barely hear herself pant for breath, Kara can only beam at the sky and wonder if this is what it means to soar.
#like listen I can't tell you how to live your life#but I'm just saying sport aus sound better with a soundtrack and this one is that track so go listen to it#this grabbed me by the neck and now I'm 2k deep in an au which is a lot for me ok#Sport AU for like the Least Gay Sport Woo!!!#anyways Kara's a running back Sam's a Wide Receiver and Alex is the QB but all of that is funky for this play is all#Kara Danvers#Alex Danvers#Sam Arias#Supergirl#football AU#Rocket writes a thing#fanfiction

The Best Yuri of 2020
2020 was hell in every way, and many of us are looking forward to new possibilities and advances in 2021. However, the year brought us many small moments and gifts worth celebrating. Among these, the explosive growth and change within the Yuri genre are among the most precious and most outstanding achievements. This second century of Yuri opened with a bang, as phenomenal new works, creators, and moments made their mark and helped change the future genre.
This annual list is a celebration of just a handful of the fantastic titles, people, and events in Yuri. There are likely some even greater ones that did not make the list because there is so much content in both English and Japanese that even I cannot keep up. However, among the troves of treasure, these titles stood out as shining examples of Yuri excellence. Some were released this year, others were recently adapted into English, and still, others are established titles that rose to prominence to dominate the conversation and my mind this year, but every one of them is worthy of being on this list and in your heart.
Here is the Best Yuri of 2020!
15: The Curse of Kudan Remastered
Japanese Yuri visual novel developers show no sign of slowing down as they continue to push to new heights and try new ideas. These are the same amazing people who brought us the delightful educational Yuri game The Expression Amrilato and the hilarious and surprisingly queer OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbando’s. However, this most recent release, The Curse of Kudan Remastered, is their best work yet. Released near Halloween, this game brings a new edge of dark mystery and the occult to Yuri audiences worldwide.
The Curse of Kudan is available on MangaGamer, JAST USA, Denpasoft, and Sekai Project.
14: Adachi and Shimamura
English audiences were finally treated this year to Hitoma Iruma’s long-running and wildly successful Yuri light novel series, Adachi and Shimamura. Although the story struggles to gain traction, dedicated readers’ have their patience rewarded with a sweet tale full of gay pining. Alternatively, you can jump into its stellar anime adaptation, with gorgeous visuals and realized characters you will actually be willing to put up with the annoying Yashiro just to see where the title characters go. The series shows no sign of slowing down either, as the manga adaptation is coming to Western audiences next year.
Adachi and Shimamura is available to stream on Funimation. The light novel series is published by Seven Seas - https://amzn.to/3rTSZTK
Honorable Mention: Happy Go Lucky Days
The OVA adaptation of Fragtime got most of the attention this year. Still, director Takuya Satou and Pony Canyon also gave us this much-overlooked “love is love” anthology movie based on Takako Shimura’s manga (Sweet Blue Flowers, Wandering Son). The first short in the film, “Happy,” is easily the best Yuri anime of the year. It follows the beautiful yet realistic queer love story of two women hooking up at a mutual ex-girlfriend’s wedding, only for the relationship to blossom and warm viewers’ hearts. Sadly, while stylized, the budget demanded the animation cut a few too many corners. Additionally, the subsequent stories are at best tedious and at worst alarmingly problematic, which is why Happy Go Lucky Days only gets an honorable mention.
The OVA is streaming on HIDIVE
13: Mieri Hiranishi
The Yuri scene has many colorful creators with a breadth of different ideas and stories in the genre, yet few have provided as much humor and joy as Mieri. This talented creator spectacularly tumbled into the scene with her manga essay The Moment I Realized I Wasn’t Straight, which embodies the brutal honesty and realism of Nagata Kabi and matches it with exaggerated hilarity. She continues to chronicle her painful struggles of being a butch girl in love with butch girls in the monthly series The Girl that Can’t Get a Girlfriend. Alternatively, you can follow her on Twitter for just as much heart and laughter.
Read The Girl that Can’t get a Girlfriend on Tapas and Webtoon.
12: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!
My Next Life as a Villainess has what can only be described as volcanic bisexual energy. Every character protagonist Catarina Claes encounters is entirely enthralled by her. Of course, she is far too preoccupied with her quest to avoid doom flags and change her ultimate fate to notice any romantic interest. The series is rewarding and well structured, as views are just as focused on how Catarina plans to avoid certain doom as they are with the various romantic misses her band of companions cooks up. While the “friendship ending” did not capitalize on its Yuri potential, it was perhaps the most satisfying possibility for this crazy harem, at least until season two comes out, which looks, unfortunately, to be significantly less queer.
My Next Life as a Villainess is streaming on Crunchyroll
11: Love Me for Who I Am
Kata Konayama’s manga series is less Yuri than a general LGBT work, but it has a lesbian character and explores her identity and struggles in great detail. Few titles before have captured the exciting and nervous waves of emotions that young people feel as they explore gender and sexual identities and try to find themselves. This heartfelt and extremely queer series rubberbands between cute moe dress up to tragic and gripping backstory, keeping readers on their toes the whole time.
Love me for Who I Am is published by Seven Seas - https://amzn.to/3rTSZTK
10: A Summer’s End – Hong Kong 1986
Oracle and Bone’s debut visual novel, A Summer’s End, is set in a vibrant and electric 1980’s Hong Kong. Drawing inspiration from classic Asian cinema, music, and fashion. The worlds of Michelle, a young office worker, and a free-spirited woman named Same collide. The two struggle to comprehend and accept each other’s feelings just as they struggle against society’s expectations and prejudices. An incredibly thoughtful and touching adventure, the creators incorporated vital contemporary elements include Asian LGBTQ rights and growing political unrest in Hong Kong, into this illustrious game.
The visual novel is available on Steam.
Honorable Mention: Goodbye, My Rose Garden
In the same vein as A Summer’s End, Goodbye, My Rose Garden is a beautiful period piece that incorporates LGBT views into its shattering narrative. The story follows a bright-eyed immigrant, Hanako, wanting to make a new life in England as an author at the dawn of the twentieth century. She takes a job as a maid to noblewoman Alice, but their relationship takes a turn when Alice asks Hanako to kill her. This poignant tale is beautiful and an honest depiction of love and its conflict with responsibility and society.
Goodbye, My Rose Garden is published by Seven Seas Entertainment - https://amzn.to/3hFSyaG
9: Shio Usui
Usui’s hit Shaikaijin Yuri manga Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon could easily take this spot even though it is not even out in English until February 2021. The manga is already making waves and receiving constant praise. The characters and their journey to discover love and self-acceptance are as charming as they are relatable and grounded. However, it is the creator, Usui, who really deserves acclaim. Not just for their work on Doughnuts, but having a second serialized story, Onna Tomodachi to Kekkon Shitemita, in monthly Yuri magazine Comic Yuri Hime simultaneously. It is even more remarkable when you consider these two iconic stories are Usui’s first long-running works, as they only contributed one-shots before.
8: Bloom Into You: Regarding Saeki Sayaka
Bloom Into You is possibly the most iconic Yuri series in the past decade, and while the manga deserves its own place on this list, the best thing to come out of the series as a whole is easily the light novels. This trilogy by Adachi and Shimamura creator Hitoma Iruma dives deep into supporting cast member Sayaka. Readers are treated to a delightful journey as she discovers her sexuality, experiences heartbreak, and finally finds herself breaking free and falling in love. With the help of gorgeous illustrations by Nakatani Nio herself, Iruma masterfully captures Sayaka’s unique voice and emotions in this wonderful series. Whether a fan of the originals or not, every Yurijin must check out Regarding Saeki Sayaka.
The light novel series is published by Seven Seas - https://amzn.to/3hFSyaG
7: Our Teachers are Dating
The best a Yuri can get. This workplace romance follows two teachers at the start of a new relationship taking nervous yet enthusiastic first steps, including saying I love you, going on their first date, and even sleeping together. It is so heartfelt and salacious that readers will squeal the whole time. Additionally, our heroines are supported in their relationship by everyone they know, their students, colleagues, and even the principal. It is a perfect world for these two lovebirds! Our Teachers are Dating would easily be number one or two in any other year, but the competition is fierce in 2020. So even though this is only number seven, it is still a master class Yuri manga.
The manga is published by Seven Seas Entertainment - https://amzn.to/38XY3O9
6: Amongst Us
Who would have thought that a comedy alternative universe story spinoff of a fantasy action series would be the single best Yuri webcomic this year? Shilin’s astounding artwork illustrations the hilarious and irresistible journey of girlfriends Blackbird and Veloce. These two eccentric young women get into all kinds of everyday mischief that bounces between tender and touching romance, completely outrageous comedy, and downright thirst-inducing sorcery. Seriously, you should buy the first volume for Veloce’s back muscles alone. The storyline skips between time, but both their established relationship and their meeting as teenagers are adorkable and captivating.
Amongst Us is available online free on Webtoon and the comic’s website. The first volume is in paperback on Shilin’s site.
Honorable Mention: Éclair
There are a lot of Yuri anthologies out there, and they have done some beautiful things. Many focus on themes like Syrup. Others collect a series of stories by an author into one bound work. However, out of all of them, Éclair is the most successful. ASCII Media Works took some of the genre’s most extraordinary creators and let them do whatever they wanted, and the results are spectacular. The incredible talent behind Éclair somehow packs a full volume’s worth of story and character into just a few pages with every chapter. While the first volume came overseas a few years ago, Yen Press gave Yurijin a gift this year by releasing the entire rest of the series in which readers can get lost.
The anthology series is published by Yen Press - https://amzn.to/38XY3O9
5: I’m in Love with the Villainess
A small trend of isekai Yuri with villainesses emerged recently, and I honestly had few hopes of I’m in Love with the Villainess. The series is pretty popular, but I often find that this does not denote quality, and with isekai having some institutional issues, I suspected this would fall flat. Then the volume three cover showcased an incredible accomplishment, allowing for a lesbian relationship to blossom into a family with children, and it blew me away. Finally, I read volume one and realized that the series has incredible character, some of the best world-building I have ever seen in a light novel, thoughtful discussions of inequality and societal issues, and most impressively, open and frank discussion of queer identity and life Yuri has ever seen! This one is something special.
The series is published by Seven Seas Entertainment - https://amzn.to/3nedvdZ
4: The Last of Us Part II
Yes, I know this one is not Yuri and that a portion of the population despises this game and will likely be exceptionally angry at me for including it. However, I maintain that it was an incredibly challenging masterpiece. Naughty Dog did not take the easy route out and delivered one of the most devastating media experiences I have ever seen. As I said in my article about the game, playing it changed me, and it sticks with me to this day. The Last of Us Part II earns its spot on this list because it pushed boundaries more with LGBTQ inclusion than any other AAA game. From brave inclusion of LGBTQ themes to queer characters and storylines at its center, the game changes gaming and it will never go back.
The Last of Us Part II is available on PlayStation 4
3: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
She-Ra feels like the culmination of all the LGBTQ progress western cartoons have made over the past few years. From The Legend of Korra to Steven Universe, young people are finally seeing more LGBTQ people represented on the small screen. This epic fantasy concluded with an amazing and powerful lesbian romance, delivering on its queer promise and revolutionized representation in a trope-defying crescendo.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is streaming on Netflix
2: The Conditions of Paradise
The greatest single Yuri work of all in 2020 was the English release of Akiko Morishima’s breakthrough manga, The Conditions of Paradise. Initially released in 2007, this anthology detailed the love between adult women. It was in every way a manga ahead of its time, and seeing it finally get a small piece of the recognition it deserves overseas is a true gift. The fact that we can own this legendary piece of Yuri history and Morishima’s other anthologies is nothing short of a blessing from the Yuri goddess.
The Conditions of Paradise is published by Seven Seas Entertainment - https://amzn.to/38bh4xq
Honorable Mention: Otherside Picnic
This eerie sci-fi horror series combines the best of pulse-pounding thrillers, complex and intelligent hard science fiction, and exciting Yuri romance. Author Iori Miyazawa spends as much time crafting a well-paced and intriguing narrative about a mysterious world where occult creatures roam as he does establishing two believable and grounded heroes in Sorawo and Toriko. The romance between the two may be slow to start, but their chemistry is undeniable and as the stakes and story build, so too does their relationship. Not only are the light novels incredible, but the series’ manga adaptation is coming soon to the West as well as an upcoming TV anime in early 2021.
Otherside Picnic is streaming on Funimation. The light novels are published by J-Novel Club - https://amzn.to/3niiv1g
1. Yuri subgenres
For a long time, Yuri was not a genre of its own, but elements of romances or bonds between women found in other works. Now, thanks to an increasing library of works, the advent of social media, and a wider audience, Yuri is a genre on its own, with many creators telling different stories in different styles. However, 2020 saw the continued emergence of something extraordinary, subgenres. Yuri is now so vast, we can actually categorize the works within. Depending on their characters, like classic schoolgirl romances or spicy shakaijin office affairs, their world, such as fantasy or isekai series and thrilling science fiction adventures, and even other elements within. One of my personal favorites is the feminist Yuri that emerges from titles like Sexiled, where women celebrate the accomplishments of other women and dismantle power structures stacked against them. Now, no matter what kind of Yurijin you are, there is something for you to love.
I am happy to leave 2020 behind, but I bring with me a renewed love and admiration for Yuri. 2021 looks to be a somehow even better year for the genre, and I am thrilled to experience every minute of it that I can. Yuri has transformed into something far greater than I ever thought it would be, and let us all enjoy its evolution and expansion together in 2021.
