experience God through serving
What first got your attention about God? Our stories are all different, but our stories are all real.
For me, church happened almost before I was born. My family was faithful to church and knew the goodness of God in many shapes and forms. Yet through the years I came to see God in bigger ways, in fresh and living ways being lived out by other people as they served.
Lots of folks we know didn't come to know Jesus when they were kids. Those folks have come in all different ways to connect with God, but everyone had connections to people who already knew God. What did they see and know before they asked Jesus for His saving hope? I want to suggest that they saw Jesus in other people's actions.
We all experience God through serving. It might as we serve that we connect with God. It very well might be that as we serve others connect with God as they see us.
Here is a story for you (and we all have a story). Someone was asked about Jesus in ways they really could not answer, but what they knew, they could speak of. Listen to their response:
John 9:25 nlt "I don't know whether he is a sinner," the man replied. "But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!"
People will experience God through serving. So I ask you: who are you serving? Think about it.
Lots of people serve self. They are (or we are) looking out for number one which is self and what I want. This is common in our nation and in our day. It is common human nature to watch out for ourselves.
But it is common spiritual nature to look out for others first. To shine for people to see God. It is through serving, sharing the kindness of God that we open the doors for people to walk through to experience God. I believe that the church ought to be the most inviting place on earth. No, not our buildings. Our people ought to be inviting people to experience God through serving them each and every day.
Philippians 2:3-5 nlt
Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
That is one more reason that ARK's (acts of random kindness) go a long way in the day we live. What do you think? My prayer is that people will experience God through serving!
NOTE: this devotion was first shared in April of 2009 and remains true 10 years later!

SERVOLUTION How can we grab the opportunity of a lifetime?
There is a revolution inside of us; exploding out of us
God’s DNA is inside of us; pouring out of us
But we need the love of JESUS to bleed out of us
How can we grab the opportunity of a lifetime?
John 13:34-35
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this, all men will know that you are my disciples if you have…

how God reveals Himself to us
This past week Julie, Ryan and I were able to spend some time with our family in Oklahoma. In fact it was a very special time as my dad got married on Saturday. What an honor to officiate at the wedding and to watch my dad and Ann enjoy life together. I hope to share more from this past week a little later.
As we were driving home today we listened to a sermon from Dino Rizzo. Dino has influenced my life and work for a long time because of his book Servolution and his work at the church he started, Healing Place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
This man always inspires me to think more about how we impact the people we encounter on a daily basis. His stories bring ideas to my mind. His sharing of Scripture always sheds light on things that God says. Once again, today’s message that he preached our daughter’s church in Tennessee was a similar and a powerful word.
Dino shared four ways that we connect with and where God reveals Himself. I thought I needed to pass these on to you and remind myself of this. Good stuff.
First, God is revealed to us when we connect with him through PRAYER.
Psalm 42:8 NLT
But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life.
Second, God is revealed to us when we serve others.
Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Third, God is revealed to us when we love.
1 Peter 2:17 NASB
Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
And fourth, God reveals Himself to us as we give ourselves away.
Matthew 16:25 NASB
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
The context of the message was about dealing with God in the context of struggling with life. No one’s life is perfect. It would be nice if it was, but we need perspective.
Life isn’t always packed full of joy. We will have joy. But get through the trials and the tests that purifies our lives.
1 Peter 1:6-7 NLT
So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
This was a powerful message, and I hope that some of this inspires you!
