Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Though they have a bloodthirsty reputation, pirannahs are hardly blood-thirsty. In fact, most of their diet is a combination of crustaceans, insects, small fish, scavenged leftovers, and tiny bites off the scales and fins of larger fish.

Wimple Piranha (Catoprion mento)
Family: Serrasalmid Family (Serrasalmidae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
A tiny (15cm/5.9 inches in length) relative of the more famous Red-Bellied Piranha, the Wimple Piranha is found in the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraguay and Essequibo river basins, and is notable for its unusual diet; adults of this species feed almost exclusively on fish scales, feeding by ramming into larger fish at high speeds with their mouths wide open, biting and generating suction to dislodge their target’s scales and pull them into their mouths. The practice of eating scales, known as lepidophagy, is rare in animals as scales are difficult to digest and require considerable amounts of energy to obtain, and it is likely that it developed in response to the intense competition between fish species in the biodiverse rivers to which Wimple Piranhas are native - although their nutrients-poor diet limits their size, feeding exclusively on scales (occasionally supplemented by small insects or small amounts of the meat of their otherwise unharmed targets where possible) allows Wimple Piranhas to find food while largely avoiding competing with larger and less specialised carnivores. Besides their unusual feeding habits little is known about the biology of wild Wimple Piranhas, although through the observation of captive individuals it has been found that unlike many piranha species they are solitary (possibly avoiding living in groups to avoid competing with other members of their species,) and that like other members of their family females of this species lay eggs.

Carvanha Analysis Post
my 1st one, since this little guy is one of my favorites.
Carvanha - As its name, body shape, and overall depiction suggests, Carvanha is more influenced by the piranha species (family Serrasalmidae), particularly the red-bellied piranha, than by the sharks. It is doubtful that they had any influence from sharks save their “Rough Skin” ability, a reference to the placoid scales, or “denticles”, found on most sharks. It is also possible that its English name comes from the scientific name of the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias).
When it comes to the piranha, Carvanha repeats myths surrounding the various species; mainly that they have immense biting power, and attack viciously with swarming maneuvers. Interestingly, recent pokedexes (Alpha Sapphire, Ultra Sun, and Sword) all contain information stating that Carvanha are timid on their own and school together for hunting and protection. The claims about being able to chew through boats are unsubstantiated and, like many pokedex entries, can be dismissed as urban legends. Additionally, it is confirmed that Carvanha are often found inland in rivers, specifically jungle rivers, though they can be fished up in Hoenn’s seas.
As seen above, Carvanha has no ties to any real world shark, making its hypothetical classification difficult at the least. Its “horns” are similar to the crests of bullhead sharks, and its schooling habits combined with its sharp bite and reddish coloring appear similar to the cookiecutter, but these are not perfect matches. The presence of Carvanha inland, a trait their evolution lacks, may suggest that the species is anadromous. No shark is truly anadromous, and while the largest bull sharks can swim far up-river they do not do so to spawn.
From what we see and are told in-game, it appears that Carvanha and by extension Sharpedo are very social fish. Young Carvanha are either born upstream or feel instinctual pulls to freshwater, migrating and spending the early years of their lives in schools, before eventually moving to the ocean and evolving. They are most likely eaten by other pokemon in and around their habitats, which explains the evolutionary trait of their abrasive scales, as well as their large schools; they experience some form of attraction to blood and will hunt in sync with their school. Otherwise their social dynamics are unknown. As for their eating habits, it is unclear if Carvanha is purely carnivorous, or omnivorous as with its real life inspiration. Carvanha do not appear to be difficult to train as they are common with trainers throughout their native regions- these trainers often only have the sole Carvanha or one other pokemon (often a Poochyena or other dark type onland, and other water types at sea), leaving it difficult to tell if Carvanha are/need to be social outside of their schools.

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #211
Brought to you by a marine biologist with a color morph...?
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
It took me entirely too long to figure out what this fish was, and it’s pretty embarrassing. I mean, yes, I’m a marine biologist, so freshwater isn’t my jam, but with such a specific name, I foolishly thought this would be easy. My first mistake was apparently thinking this fish was a new species we haven’t covered before. Turns out, despite there being plenty of other piranha species to choose from, ACPC decided to go with the Yellow King Piranha, which is currently just a neat, alt-colored red-bellied piranha.
Tumblr media
The Yellow King Piranha (YKP) appeared in AC Pocket Camp in November of 2021 for Fishing Tourney 44 with other freshwater fish.
Now, like I said above, this fish is simply a color morph of the red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri), the most famous of the piranhas. We’ve also covered it before, so if you want a full run-down, be sure to read that article, too. TL:DR: Piranhas boast the strongest bite force of any vertebrate; people think they’re scary, but they are also known to eat fruit and crack nuts with those powerful jaws.
Piranhas belong to the order Characiformes, a large and diverse group of freshwater fish some 2000 species strong. They include the piranhas, as well as the popular tetras, for which we’ve covered quite a few, the Dorado, and others. Piranhas belong to Family Serrasalmidae, which includes them and their close, more vegetarian relatives the silver dollars and pacus. Now, here’s where it starts getting confusing, at least for me when I was trying to find info about this fish. First, we’ll start with the name. Although I eventually found out the YKP is another name for a color morph of the red-bellied piranha, I also found a separate scientific name for it - Serrasalmus ternetzi. This implied it was a separate species, and so my wild...fish chase began. But it turns out that this name, and the YKP’s distinction as a separate species, isn’t all that official. They can be found in the wild, in a very small section of the Amazon River Basin, so, maybe it’s all a matter of time.
Tumblr media
^Adobe Stock Photo.
However, there are also actual, official other species of piranha that look like the icon of the YKP that ACPC provides. So, like, what am I supposed to do? Which species do I say for certain they were going for? I wouldn’t put it past AC to double up on the same species if it’s a popular aquarium pet - and yes, piranhas are popular aquarium fish for the very dedicated, experienced hobbyist. But, like, so are at least 9 other piranha species, some of which look like this icon.
For instance, I’m equally convinced ACPC’s YKP is actually the Peruvian Black Piranha, aka the Redeye Piranha, Serrasalmus rhombeus, native to northern drainages of the Amazon. They come in many, many colors depending on the water conditions, so they are also locally called  the White Piranha. They also look like the fellow below with the yellow belly and longer jaws which makes it look very similar to the ACPC icon. Of course, there is the lack of the red eyes, so probably not.
Tumblr media
I could go on, but you get it.
And there you have it. Fascinating stuff, no?

A piranha or piraña 🐟📸🍀 (/pɪˈrɑːnjə/, /pɪˈrænjə/, or /pɪˈrɑːnə/; Portuguese: [piˈɾɐ̃ɲɐ], Spanish: [piˈɾaɲa]), a member of family Serrasalmidae, or a member of the subfamily Serrasalminae within the tetra family, Characidae in order Characiformes, is a freshwater fish that inhabits South American rivers, floodplains, lakes and reservoirs. Although often described as extremely predatory and mainly feeding on fish, their dietary habits vary extensively, and they will also take plant material, leading to their classification as omnivorous. #Travel #TravelPics #Photography #TravelPhoto #Podroze #Wycieczka #Zdjecia #unitedkingdom #uk #london #visituk #visituk🇬🇧 #visitlondon #visitlondon🇬🇧 #summer #Sun #Fun #Follow #FollowMe #FollowThem #Walk #Walking #llondonunitedkingdom🇬🇧 #londonsealife #londonsealifeaquarium #londonsealifeacquarium #piranha #piraña #piranhafish #piranafish (w: SEA LIFE London Aquarium™) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNVm17unw9i/?igshid=x3vpad3u2wmy

An article published in the journal "Evolution & Development" reports a research on the replacement of teeth in piranhas, the famous carnivorous fish that live in South America's rivers and lagoons. They, like other species of the Serrasalmidae family commonly known as pacus which are omnivorous, simultaneously replace all the teeth on one side on their mouth. It was a known mechanism but only now it's been observed and therefore proven.

VEGGIE PIRANHA FOUND IN BRAZILIAN AMAZON ROCKY RAPIDS
Living in the rocky rapids of tributaries draining the upper basin of the Trombetas River, itself a tributary of the Amazon River, Tometes camunani is considered a piranha, not a pacu—a vegetarian fish often mistaken for the piranha and even sold as a “vegetarian piranha.” The pacu has very different teeth from the piranha, possessing a double row of squared-off teeth ideally adapted for its diet of vegetation such as seeds that fall into the water.
The new species is strictly rheophilic like other species of Tometes, and occurs exclusively in the rapids of shield rivers, complex and fragile biotopes that are threatened by anthropogenic activities
