Video

I've just finished and uploaded my third video essay, which is a discussion of the themes and characters of the manga/anime "Call of the Night." If you’re not familiar, Call of the Night is a vampire manga, and I think it's really interesting to interrogate vampire media to find out what exactly vampires signify in any given story. The video contains spoilers for the anime and manga, but this also means that if you're not already thinking of checking Call of the Night out, it might be worth it to check out the video and see if knowing a bit more about the series sparks your interest! If you're already familiar with Call of the Night, then I highly recommend checking out the video to see if my analysis resonates with you! I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Inuyasha crying at Kikyou's final death is very moving but I think it's important to remember that by his own admission, he would not have been able to cry for her, before. It's only thanks to Kagome that he feels comfortable enough with himself to cry at all and show vulnerability to others. That's what really makes that moment beautiful to me. (Though in a bittersweet way, obviously.)

I also want to focus on the "What true strength and kindness is" line because to me this implies Kagome is the paragon of strength and kindness that Inuyasha wanted to model himself after. Obviously we all know that potential was already in him and Kagome coaxed it out and praised it from him, but I think it's really beautiful to hear Inuyasha thought of Kagome as his role model, in a way. After all, being brave in order to help people WAS one of the first compliments Inuyasha ever admitted to himself about her.

Inuyasha looks so happy to see Kikyo.
If Inuyasha had a tail, it would be wagging.

( I have a thought that Sesshoumaru must have met Inuyasha once or twice prior to his appearance in the manga/anime—and it wasn't very pretty. )
The first time he met his half-brother, it was when Izayoi was alive. He observed them out of sight, unwilling to go against the memory of his father at the time, and he was above slaughtering a broken family already destined for failure. The thought occurred to him, but he was much too prideful to ask Izayoi about his father's tomb, either.
The second time came months after Izayoi's passing, watching youkai attack and humans chase away his younger half-brother. Inuyasha had noticed him, immediately wary of his presence but oddly recognizing him as his brother. Sesshoumaru hadn't realized his father had spoke of him to Izayoi, then Izayoi would inform Inuyasha, as if his blood relatives would look after a halfbreed. Sesshoumaru had brutally taught him a lesson, but chose not to kill him just yet. To do so would have been a mercy.
I'm a bit more conflicted about this idea but I imagine Inuyasha almost began to befriend someone. This someone just happened to be in Sesshoumaru's path at the wrong time and was slain right before their eyes. Of course, Sesshoumaru, being the jerk he is, claims that it was Inuyasha's fault, simply because he was associated with them, that he wasn't strong enough to do anything about it.
That's the last time Inuyasha had seen Sesshoumaru up until the manga. It's also how Inuyasha remembered his name.
