I implore people to explore korean music beyond kpop. And not just dip your toes and discover the top 3 krnb artists and the token 2 indie kbands every kband fan knows. I mean really find a playlist or get a friend to list out recs. Because the amount of incredible music people are missing out on is astonishing.
I've been listening to kpop for 12-13 years, k-rock/k-indie for roughly 10. Started watching vocal/band survival shows in 2019/2020. Korea actually has INCREDIBLE ballad and pop power vocal singers. It also has a large indie/rock scene.
I've met people who have straight up told me it hadn't occurred to them Korea has rock bands. My brother in christ, Seo Taiji himself (from seo taiji & the boys, aka the first kpop group) started off in a metal band.
One of the coolest bands I know is an avant garde gugak-metal fusion band called Jambinai. They literally performed at the Olympics and yet nobody talks about them.
Or how about Lee Seunghwan? The ballad singer and part time rock singer who did a 12hr concert complete with a dinner break for funsies because it was his debut anniversary year.
Sohyang??? The absolute goddess? Park Hyoshin? Naul? Seomoon Tak? Such amazing ballad and pop singers.
