Seo: I don’t think there’s anything to worry about since Ikuto-kun’s there, but do take care.

I couldn’t help but to feel crushed and relieved at the same time, knowing that we had successfully accomplished what we came here for and that it was already time to leave. I greeted Seo-san and the rest goodbye before hurriedly rushing to catch up to Saotome-san, who had already been speedily heading towards the carpark.

DAY 25 - What are the names of at least two of your main characters? How did you choose their names?

two? how about twelve?

being the beta version of chiaki nanami (whose name means one thousand autumns; seven seas), @/bootlcg’s chika narumi’s name (one thousand flowers; the roaring of the sea) is a play on her sister’s in both meaning and spelling.

Poisoned Paradise’s saki fukunaga (blossom, hope; blessed longevity) alludes to her spring-coloured hair and heroic aspirations.

the name of saki’s best friend, tomoyo kariya (Poisoned Paradise), is a homage to tomoyo daidouji from cardcaptor sakura, a character who (like miss kariya) rocks a wavy haircut and is supportive of her gal pal.

i can’t remember where Holding Out for Friday’s heroine ayaka orlando’s got her forename from (all i remember is i really liked the nickname aya), but her surname comes from the protagonist of the pokemon oras demos. the combination of eastern and and western names also separates her from the rest of the americanised-named cast and is a nod to how hoenn is based on an island in japan.

taiga madurai (a formerly-affiliated oc now on @/nindocoded) was originally an orphan named sora (sky [because of her white hair and blue eyes]) until i found an open-for-applications clan in the rp group i was in at the time. the madurai clan’s abilities and backstory suited the character perfectly, so i changed her name from sora to taiga (tiger [inspired by toradora]) to better match their edgier naming trend.

@/leadmedal’s hyejin seo’s given name means either favour/benefit or precious/rare, alluding to how she does the rfa a favour by joining them, benefits from doing so, and has a life-changing experience as a result. as for her family name, it's a common one in korea and pairs nicely with "hyejin”.

though she insists otherwise, four from @/talentcoded is clearly using an alias, which i'm essentially poking fun at her for by giving her such an obvious fake name. using a number as her alias was an idea i swiped directly from seven from mystic messenger, although the “4″ also functions as the “a” in her old url, “shsl-h4cker”, and hints at some character stuff when you learn the meaning of error 404.

also from @/talentcoded, and also with a name i stole from someone else, yuuhi nagai’s first name (setting sun) is taken from the equally gorgeous and mysterious yuuhi kurenai from naruto, with her second name (long well) being an allusion to well-associated japanese spirits like samara from the ring, who yuuhi resembles. ironic, given she’s an exorcist.

kei fujita (@/talentcoded) is an intentionally unisex name for my androgynous agender track star. kei has a whole bunch of meanings that i haven’t commited to a single one of yet, and fujita means “wisteria rice paddy”, which is the closest i could get to “far wisteria”, the meaning of kei’s original surname, endo, which i changed since it made the westernised version of their name sound too much like “kendo”.

the name masami miyamoto (@/talentcoded) combines “become, beautiful” and “base of the shrine” to represent her attitude towards graffiti art. her beta surname had something to do with marketplaces, but i figured that’d better suit a vendor oc.

michi kobayashi (from, you guessed it, @/talentcoded) literally means “righteous way” [through a] “small forest”, which summarises her ninja family backstory to a t.

and finally we have from @/talentcoded’s kai itou, whose forename and surname mashed together spells out his shsl talent, ultimate kaitou (phantom thief).

as you can see, i like having names with meanings! balancing subtext and aesthetics is something i love to do successfully, so a lot of my oc name reflect this :D

What do you think of shojo manga? One of the reasons I embraced, with some caveats, bl is that I didn't really enjoy the shoujo manga I read (early on). It took me many years to articulate reasons why I felt I could never relate to the otp, their styles of courtship, and their dynamics. I don't like it as a genre exactly, but a couple of them are gems. Genre-wise, I much prefer yaoi and josei, and maybe seinen.

When I was younger, I really enjoyed Fruits Basket. It was one of the first English-translated manga I discovered in my local bookstore. Like Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, and Case Closed among others, Fruits Basket was infused with nostalgia for me. I also loved the supernatural elements. Recently, I reread the whole series and found that it really is a quintessential 2000s manga lol. I don't dislike it, but it didn't carry the same emotional weight I remembered. As a heroine, Tohru falls a bit flat for me. She is kind, a cheerleader for her friends, of cheerful disposition, nice, and...

I really felt little emotional investment in her struggle, her relationships with Yuki and Kyo, and even her navigation of her mother's death lacked depth. It was weighed down by its drama. That's not to say I dislike all cheerful heroines; in fact, cousin to Tohru's mc is Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-kun's Chiyo, character I quite like. I think the series is not exactly shojo, but Nozaki is a shojo mangaka. Chiyo perhaps is the late-aughts build of Tohru: she's a bit more sarcastic, has comedic timing, and most importantly, one feels her pain more acutely. She is also saved by having a stellar partner in the stoic Nozaki. I also happen to love relationships with a "teamwork" dynamic; theirs is a slow burn that doesn't feel drawn out with misunderstandings (I'm looking at you, Kanojo, Okarishimasu...). It's more than halfway through, hopefully, and I'm enjoying Chiyo and Nozaki's friendship. I really loved that fireworks scene. The supporting characters are also incredible, Mikoshiba, Seo, Yuu, just all of them.

Perhaps the adult analog of Chiyo is Wotakoi's Narumi. I know it's josei, but Wotakoi might be my favorite romance series and I'm embarrassed to say it, but it was the series to lead me to yaoi...I love Narumi x Hirotaka. Everyone loves Wotakoi, but I need to reiterate how much I love this series. The scene when young Hiro gets his ears pierced, when Hanako and Kaba get together, when they get married, basically all their scenes together, I also love Ko x Naoya. I love everything about Wotakoi. It throws all sorts of emotional punches without becoming too dramatic, and most importantly, their relationships feel healthy to me. It may feel like a low bar, but romance-based manga include so many toxic otp.

For instance, I'm surprised Ookami Shojo to Kuro Oji is so popular. I could barely make it through volume 1 without cringing at how manipulative Kyoya is. He treats Erika horribly and the tone of the manga doesn't condemn him for it because he's keeping it real? Toxic mcs like Kyoya are also not rare in yaoi, and those are really the worst types. To wrap up, much of the shojo manga I've read relies on drama/misunderstandings/general teen angst for emotional depth, and that falls a bit short for me. That being said, I haven't read that much shojo manga, so my assessment could be completely wrong. What are some of your favorite ones? Please recommend.

Welcome, demigods, to the Hallowed Woods Mountain Resort !!

As the demigods step through the portal, all their weekend luggage in tow, they find themselves in the lobby of the Hallowed Woods Mountain Resort in Colorado! Before them is a luxurious and grand foyer, made of gorgeous stained wood and old stone, with high ceilings and tall windows that let the sunlight from outside spill in. In fact, looking through those windows, the demigods can see the vast and breathtaking view— an expanse of snow and trees for almost as far as the eye can see. They’re nestled comfortably in the middle of these woods, private property on the side of a mountain, and the entire place is reserved just for them, though the nearby mountain town houses locals and other tourists.

Marina gathers them in the lobby, a pleased and bright smile on her face, standing next to the ever-radiant, revered, and friendly Aphrodite. The goddess claps her hands excitedly, eyes sparkling, both in delight at the fun she hopes the demigods will have on this excursion, and also because she knows the whole weekend is basically dedicated to her. She thanks the demigods for their time and their honor, then passes the baton to Marina, who happily informs them again of their room assignments, lists all the various activities and amenities available to them for the next two days, and lets them know the resort’s event hall will be all decked out for them for tomorrow’s ball.

“We sincerely hope all of you take the weekend to relax and enjoy yourselves, you deserve it more than we can say. Make some memories, demigods, and we can’t wait to see you all at tomorrow night’s masquerade!”

- remember that Aphrodite only appears as her FC Jiu when she’s hiding and blending in with the demigods, but when she’s publicly showing up as Aphrodite, she takes another form so she can keep that illusion going. she’ll be around for most of the weekend, however as soon as the Masquerade Ball starts, she will be heading back to Olympus since it’s kind of awkward for her to be present at the same event where demigods will be making offerings to her all night, but she’ll feel all your blessings from Olympus!
