14. Wrapping up the semester, I took one last brisk walk around campus for my final blog post. With winter rapidly approaching, the weather this week has been brutally cold with unpredictable winds and nonstop rain. Today, the rain finally cleared up and the sun peeked out, creating some much needed warmth.
As I strolled through the campus, the echoes of my footsteps mingled with the crisp, fall air. The once vibrant autumn leaves now lay scattered, a mosaic of reds and golds underfoot. The skeletal branches of trees reached towards the sky, their stark silhouettes against the daylight.
In these final moments, I revisited familiar spots that had become my sanctuaries during the semester—a quiet bench under a centuries-old oak tree and the fountain in the center of campus. Each step felt like a farewell to a chapter closing, but with the promise of a new one unfolding.
As I approached the heart of the campus, the library stood as a symbol of collective knowledge and shared endeavors. The towering shelves housed countless stories and wisdom, a testament to the intellectual growth we all underwent during these months. It was a place where the rustle of pages and the tapping of keys created a symphony of dedication.
Wrapping up this semester’s journey, I couldn’t help but be grateful for the challenges, the friendships forged, and the knowledge gained. The campus, now preparing for its settlement into winter break’s hibernation, whispered a silent promise of renewal in the coming spring. With a contented heart, I turned my back on the familiar sights, ready to embrace the next adventure beyond these well-trodden paths.

Happy Birthday, Rachel Carson Today is the birthday of Rachel Carson (1907 - 1964), an American marine biologist, popular author and conservationist whose 1969 book, Silent Spring, brought environmental issues into the mainstream and helped kickstart the global environmental movement. If you’ve been following me for a while, you may have noticed that environmental conservation is one of my recurring subjects. It isn’t easy to find humour in such a serious topic but I try my best. My interest in raising awareness on environmental issues may have been fuelled by my wife, who works in this field, but the earliest influence came from my father. My father, who is now retired, studied Plant Pathology in Taiwan back in the late 1960s. As a landscape officer with JTC, he made significant contributions to the greening efforts of Singapore in her early years of independence, including the development of the Chinese and Japanese Gardens at Jurong Lake (which used to be a river). He introduced me to the idea of reusing and recycling long before it became popular in Singapore. A few years ago, when I discovered the writings of Rachel Carson, I was pleasantly surprised to find on my father’s shelf, a Chinese translation of Silent Spring. He had purchased it in Taiwan back in 1971, when he was only 24 years old. Like most of his books, it is well-worn and annotated with his handwritten notes. He had even decorated the content page with a tiny sticker of Oscar the Grouch (get the symbolism?) from Sesame Street, a show that had debuted the same year the book was published. On this special day, I’d like to share with you some photos of my father’s old book as a tribute to both Rachel Carson and my father. #RachelCarson #environmentalism #SilentSpring #conservation #Connect2Earth #Singapore #myfather #environmentalscience #womeninscience #womenpower #nature #senseofwonder (at Rachel Carson Homestead Association) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAsN7-9Htp7/?igshid=1h7owcgerh8or

11. One cool autumn day, I decided to go for a jog around campus, and it was amazing. The leaves on the trees had turned all sorts of red, orange, and yellow colors, and the air was fresh and chilly.
As I started my jog, I noticed that the leaves on the ground made a crunchy carpet under my feet. It felt like I was jogging through a colorful wonderland.
The trees all around campus looked really pretty with their colorful leaves, and I could hear the leaves rustling in the breeze, which was quite calming.
One great thing about jogging in the fall is the way everything smells. The air had a lovely earthy scent, like the leaves on the ground.
I saw other students walking and talking amongst themselves. Everyone was dressed in cozy sweaters and layers, it felt like we were all enjoying the season together.
During my jog, I stopped for a while to sit on a bench and take in the view. The sun was bright in the sky and the clouds were wispy and widespread.
Jogging on a fall day around campus made me realize that exercising can be a way to enjoy the beauty of nature. The season’s charm made my jog feel peaceful and incredible. It was a day that reminded me of how much joy a simple run can bring, especially with the stunning backdrop of a fall day on campus.

Swipe to see the trial and errors of using my iphone to capture the eclipse last night. 💁🏽‍♀️ But the bad photo quality doesn’t matter bc staying up late with the kids, running from each deck to the other to watch the moon in all its wonder, thinking of the unimaginable mysteries of outerSpace… and knowing we are on an oversized boulder that is orbiting simultaneously with the sun and moon for a moment, now casting its shadow on the moon……. Ugh the wonder!!! The pure amazement of what I look up to in the skies. This never gets old!! And I think, other than looking at the incredible force of the ocean waves, the view doesn’t get much more powerful than this down here on earth. ✨🌒🌎🌘🌝💫 #lunareclipse2022 #laluna #eclipseseason #fullmoonvibes #senseofwonder #outerspacephotography #fogrollingin #iphone13 #moonwitch #witchywoman #powerfulviews #neverstopwondering #valleyviews https://www.instagram.com/p/Cdntl4sL_8F/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
