she didn't "beat him nearly to death", first of all. that is the accusation by hungarian prosecution who want to throw her in jail and lose the key. no one has stepped forward to accuse her and no witness has pointed to her as the "perpetrator"

her name is ILARIA SALIS, not Laria. yes, she is an anti-fascist activist, and a teacher. in this instance, her only crime is that she traveled to hungary to a counter-protest after a disgusting far right rally that took place over there. that's it. there were skirmishes at the protest, chaos ensued, but that's what happens usually at these events

what's truly ludicrious is that the hungarian authorities arrested her and she has been kept in jail for months. treated like an animal, chained hands and feet whenever she was due to appear in court at her sham trial. the italian government (also right-wing so, secretly thrilled about this development) had to finally throw their weight around and demand she be moved to house arrest at least.

finally. she faced a sentence of up to 20 (TWENTY) years in jail for a simple fucking misdemeanor. because Hungary is a fucking dictatorship - just imagine how many Hungarian protesters and activists have been jailed and are routinely terrorized and oppressed without the privilege of an Italian passport. we don't hear about them, right???

as for the "communism" part. there is no communist party in italy at the moment. the USA have made sure of that over decades of, let's say, involvement in Italian affairs. the Greens and Left Alliance, the party Salis was elected with, is a left-leaning socialist, progressive party. many former communists vote for them but only because it's the "closest living relative" to what they used to stand for.

this isn't a "get out of jail free card" by the way, or a win whatsoever (except that she finally was released, which we have been protesting nearly a year for). because nothing's stopping, say, the German neonazi party AfD from doing the same thing to save a neonazi on trial for hate crimes.

so, like. Europe is going down a very dangeorus path and there's very little to rejoice here. it's making us who go to protests against the rise of neonazi - far right sentiment in Europe very, very scared.

Why do you think Paul insists saying John was sweet and nice when he really wasn't. He was shit to everyone including Paul. Because he feels he has to or because he was in love with him and that's what he remembers?

i meannnnn people are mixed bags. someone isn't always cruel and they also aren't always nice. ofc, john WAS a deeply awful person to many people around him (especially women). he had a Lot of untreated issues & anger. he could be very cruel & hurtful. but i think paul says he was sweet and nice because he was that, too. people aren't all black and white, ykwim? and while certainly you can absolutely hate john for some of the things he did & that's totally your right, so too can the people that loved him in life choose to forgive him. i think paul definitely like. remembers john's capacity for cruelty. he's talked about it a lot, as well as how much john hurt him & how confusing that whole period of their lives was for him. i DO wish he'd ever talk about the awful way john treated women, but i really don't think that's ever going to happen.

but as for their personal relationship, i think he just sees that john was sweet/nice a Majority of their friendship (or... whatever lmao) & that's just as much a part of him as the cruelty was. not to mention, a lot of that cruelty paul unfortunately shared in, especially in their youth, so i don't know that he saw as much of an issue with it before it turned on him.

but yeah i mean. john being a cunt & abusive doesn't necessarily negate him being sweet/nice. and if the latter is what paul remembers most and wants people to remember about john as well, i can't exactly blame him given how traumatically john died & the hole he left in his life. i think remembering him only for his cruelty would be worse for him than remembering both and focusing on the sweetness, yk?

No I’m SO sorry but it’s truly so funny to me that a lot of dudes going to see challengers for the idea that they’ll see a hot naked Zendaya and what they actually get treated to is tasteful and delicate aspects of the male form from the visionary that is Luca Guadagnino (and of course very very explicitly homoerotic imagery.) And there is a healthy amount of sexualization for both forms. But the fact that there is full frontal male nudity in this movie, the only true nudity in this movie is of the male form, marketed the way it is is just so good. Like I work in a theater and the amount of dudes coming out lambasting that this movie sucks is so fucking delicious. The way straight guys have to sit and accept the queerness of this movie that it EXISTS, that it’s beautiful and tender and gentle, and intimate, but also loud, and brash, and seeped into every conceivable corner adds another 10 on top of this already 10/10 movie.

Thinking about "Pinkwashing" again. I don't know how to stress this enough, but Israel had a famous and beloved trans woman pop star in 1993.

I'm assuming the younger Queer audience on tumblr doesn't realize how recent US Queer rights are. For comparison, the famous and beloved US show Law & Order SVU came out in 1999 and used transphobic slurs on national television nearly every episode. There was a case with a "he/she" (the most respectful term they used) at least once a season, and she would always be a violent criminal sex worker. They were still making fun of cis gay people in mainstream media through the mid-2000s. Being gay was still illegal in Texas in 1993! You could get charged with a crime for having gay sex! If you wanted to live openly as a trans person in the US in 1993? You pretty much had to live in specific neighbourhoods in NYC or LA. And even then, you risked getting assaulted or killed every time you walked out the door.

If that was the dominant environment in the US in the '90s and early 2000s, how would Pinkwashing a trans woman to national stardom benefit Israel's image? You'd think, if anything, it would make the average USAmerican less likely to support Israel. Dana International couldn't have been a PR tactic to garner support from the USA, because the US liked trans people less in the 90s than they do today. Maybe, just maybe, she got famous because she makes good music, and because Israeli people tend to accept her for who she is. Is that so hard to believe?
