do u have any sports doc recs 🤝

i mean. the crossfit games documentary i just watched was sad but also quite an interesting look at the crossfit community & how people deal with grief. i watch the buttery bros documentaries for this event pretty much every year. the quality isn’t Amazing but they’re free & on youtube & they provide an up close & personal view of the athletes because the guys who make the movies are friends w them so that part is pretty cool.

other sports documentaries i liked:

The Last Dance - basketball series. incredible storytelling. equally incredible soundtrack.

Icarus - cycling doc. slow start but gets REALLY good. deep dives into the russian doping scandal from a few years back.

The Russian Five - hockey doc. it’s on youtube and i think everyone has pretty much seen it by now but it’s just. so good. so devastating.

Free Solo - climbing doc.

Senna - F1 doc. i liked the documentary and thought it was good but senna himself is um. pretty gross. the documentary doesn’t mention it but he dated a teenager when he was a grown adult so. you should know that going in i guess.

Last Chance U - series. the basketball season is good & the first american football season is good too. every other season i kinda hated. it’s a series that follows a group of boys who’ve failed out of university or gotten into some kind of legal trouble & are now trying to impress at a junior college to get back into the competitive sports programs. my mom and i used to watch these together.

MotoGP Unlimited - MotoGP series. this is basically drive to survive if it was good.

Hitting the Apex - MotoGP doc. slightly older but still good. focuses more on VRossi who i think is one of the most interesting motorsports personalities probably ever.

Tour the France: Unchained - cycling series. i thought this was v good even though i don’t typically love the netflix drive to survive type shows.

Cheer - cheerleading series. this one is interesting because the second season takes SUCH a turn. (CW: sexual assault) the first season follows a cheer team throughout their season. it’s happy. lighthearted. cute. the show does really well, the cheerleaders become pretty famous over it. the second season starts with one of the cheerleaders (a fan favourite) being imprisoned for sexually assaulting a minor. so that season then follows the rest of the team & how they’re dealing with that. it’s pretty dark but i found it interesting.

other docs worth checking out:

the first pens cup doc is pretty good. (i watched the other 2 and liked those less). there’s also a documentary called Pittsburgh is Home which i quite liked. not super high quality, but interesting.

ive seen a bunch of the netflix sports docuseries and hated pretty much all of them (sorry) but i will still check out the american football quarterback series just because i think american football is cool.

i watched the leafs all or nothing docuseries twice (TERRIBLE storytelling. really so bad) and enjoyed it for what it was. but man it’s bad. sorry leafs fans. also some very disturbing serious injuries being shown so don’t go into that one blind.

more crossfit & crossfit adjacent documentaries that i liked but that aren’t necessarily Good: FroIVing, The Fittest on Earth (there’s like 4 of these. ive watched all of them a few times), Fullsterkur, Ronnie Coleman: The King.

The John Player Special livery of the Renault-Lotus Team is considered by many to be one of the most legendary liveries in Motorsport history. i know not a lot of people know about the extended canon, but its very interesting how many people decide to ignore senna exists and the role she canonically plays in londo's story. its very interesting to see londopilled mollariheads who know everything about him and have all this meta decidedly ignore senna, even though she is one of his most important relationships post-canon. she canonically stays with londo until a few hours before his death which is about 15 years. he takes her in. she becomes his ward. she's important to him.

play with canon however you want i know i do. but its just strange how people can make all this meta about random centauri side characters from the books and stuff (me included!!!!!) and then ignore senna refa. is it because she's refa's daughter? is it because of her relationship with londo? is it because she canonically ends up with vir, and people dont like it? idk man i dont really care about peoples personal opinions like that i just think its kind of interesting how often senna gets ignored in post-canon/fanon convos about londo. senna is such an interesting character-even just her existing is interesting, what she represents TO londo (turning over a new leaf, taking responsibility for his actions, letting children, letting Women, specifically, choose) and yet people just do nothing with her. im not gonna demand people do more with her as she is an extended canon character and stuff but i just. yeah. idk just my hot take for the day

i also must say i have not read the books themselves but i know enough about them and peter david is Not the greatest at writing women and senna has some dicy moments in the novels (she gets hit by a man trying to marry her, to which londo steps in and beats that guys ass when he asks senna what she wants btw!!!) and i know some people may be uncomfy with the books portrayal of her but to ignore her completely? it just makes me sad! thats so much londo lore youre missing out on!

Merlin sighs and turns to watch as Gwaine collides with the door to the physician’s quarters.

“One of these days that door is going to come off of its hinges and I’m forcing you to fix it. I have too much on my plate already,” he complains. In return, Gwaine puts his hands to his chest, a faux-butthurt expression on his face.

“C’mon, Merlin, I haven’t even said anything,” Gwaine counters, but Merlin’s just shaking his head. He should have slept in this morning.

“Gwaine, that’s the way you say my name when you get into trouble and need my help to get you out of it,” Merlin replies, “and I’m swamped right now.”

Gwaine just smirks and makes puppy eyes. Or, tries to. Instead it just looks like that time Merlin pranked him during Samhain. Merlin’s never seen eyes look so close to actually popping out of their sockets.

Merlin groans, and Gwaine mutters a little “yes” before scrambling over to Merlin. Before Gwaine can even mention the trouble he’s in, they hear a stampede clambering through the hallway, shouting angrily.

“Betting again?” Merlin asks. Gwaine just chortles, but it stops at the “Knight or not, I’m gonna kill you!” that echoes its way from the hall into the open door.

“Hide me?” is all Gwaine says in response, and all of a sudden, Merlin knows how they can both benefit from this.

“Of course,” the warlock responds, a dastardly and enthusiastic grin on his face.

At the change in mood, Gwaine’s putting his hands up, a “wait” leaving his lips, but Merlin’s already begun speaking in the old tongue. Suddenly, it’s not the Gwaine he knows standing before him, but an old man with Gwaine’s eyes, surprise and displeasure writ clear across his face.

“Hey, beggars can’t be choosers,” Merlin says, delighted, and he’s not sure he’ll ever be able to wipe the smirk off of his face.

Gwaine’s old body is plopping down grumpily on the patient’s cot as a horde of angry townsfolk burst through the door. Again, Merlin can’t help but think how pissed he’ll be if that thing comes off of it’s hinges.

“Where is he?” grumbles an old man at the front of the pack. Merlin turns to them with a disappointed frown on his face.

“Where is who? This is the physician’s quarters. You can’t be in here while I’m with a patient,” Merlin scolds, gesturing to Gwaine on the cot. Gwaine takes the opportunity to groan and mumble to himself, gripping his abdomen. Merlin can’t help it.

“This man has been backed up for days. You can’t imagine the pain he’s in right now,” he almost blows it with a laugh, “The last thing he needs is this pileup barging in and blasting through while he’s in such a vulnerable state.”

The townspeople look genuinely unsure at this point. On the one hand, the physician’s quarters are at a dead end in the citadel, meaning there’s nowhere else Gwaine could have gone. On the other hand, they mean no disrespect to this elderly man. Merlin decided to really sell it.

“I’ve just given him a remedy of buckthorn and senna leaf. Do you really want to infringe upon his comfort as his body releases such a great accumulation of waste?”

Merlin’s got his hands on his waist, eyebrows knit, as he watches them catch up one by one. Then, all at once, they turn and scramble out the door.

“Oi! He’s going to be making some truly terrible noises! You can’t give him his privacy?” Merlin yells after them, and the last he sees of the crowd is a hand roughly yanking the door closed. He stares at it for a brief moment, and then he’s almost doubled over with laughter as he turns back to Gwaine. Gwaine who’s trying for unimpressed, but can’t quite seem to get the corner of his mouth to come down.

As Merlin calms down from his fit, Gwaine just looks at him, eyebrows raised and arms slightly extended, palms face up.

“Thanks for the assist, mate. I’m ready to be dashing again.” Now it’s Merlin’s turn to be unimpressed.

“Sorry, I seem to have forgotten how to reverse this one,” Merlin tells him, and for a second Gwaine’s face blanches, eyes wide again, before he smooths his face.

“Very funny, change me back,” he tries again, but Merlin’s already shaking his head.

“I think there’s a lot you could learn in a night as an old man. Like how to appreciate friends. And how good a nice soup truly is-“

“Merlin, please, you know I appreciate you and all you do, you can’t leave me like this,” Gwaine begs, but Merlin refuses to relent.

“I do, but this is too much fun,” the warlock replies. “Now get out of here before I decide to put buckthorn and senna leaf in your next meal.”

At that, Gwaine eases himself off the cot and stumbles his way toward the door, groaning and muttering the whole way.

When Gaius enters the room almost an hour later, he watches his ward with concern as Merlin laughs to himself, still wiping tears from his eyes.

Of all the people to pick as an envoy for Gridania, why him? 

Kien could hardly fathom what the Elder Seedseer saw in him after everything that had led up to this point. Surely, she would’ve thought someone else more worthy of the task, someone who was wiser, older, and familiar with local customs–not someone who barely knew Gridania’s history, or seemed to have a knack for stumbling into trouble, or who just passes out mid-conversation during something important like a Greenbliss Festival he was an emissary for. Surely, this was all a mere jest and she would quickly take it all back...and yet, there was no doubt over the genuineness of her words, something he was not quite used to hearing from people. It was a strange and somewhat giddy feeling to be deemed as worthy.

When he had come to after the ceremony, the Miqo’te was pleased to see his new friend there to greet him but that feeling had quickly turned into dread as Mother Miounne told him the Elder Seedseer had requested his presence at the Lotus Stand. Would she be angry at him for passing out? Would she scold him like his sisters had always done? So many fears and questions circulated his mind as he made his way to his destination; he was practically shaking like a leaf when he came face to face with Kan-E-Senna again. 

She hadn’t scolded him, in fact, she asked how he was feeling after his collapse–she actually seemed relieved to see him on his feet again. That was strange. Even more so when she then entrusted him with the task of traveling to the other city-states as the representative. Her kind-hearted smile and pure belief that he was the right one, and the only right one for this task was enough to wash every fear and doubt away–she somehow succeeded in making him feel as if he was the most important person in the world, even if he saw himself as a bumbling new adventurer.

The two scrolls sat neatly in his bag as he made his way to the airship landing. Despite the slight anxiety he still had over the whole thing, he couldn’t hide the fact that he was excited to see Limsa Lominsa and Ul’dah in person, knowing the stories his guardian told him about the city-states were just barely scratching the surface. And after all, this was exactly what he had been hoping for when he left Meracydia, wasn’t it? A chance to explore Eorzea and see the sights…the whole envoy thing was merely temporary and he could just go back to being an adventurer after all was said and done, right?

How wrong he would soon come to be, but that of course would be something he’d come to realize and strangely enough, appreciate, much later. 

For now, he just hoped he wouldn’t pass out again.

wheatley comes out and looks at sunnie, then at parsley. zen is setting up plates! senna takes some plates and thanks him for helping. teya says thats why hes their favorite and he goes 'i am?!' wheatley helps parsley stare lol.

senna also helps stare lol. 'teya your friends are being weird!' 'could be worse!' parsley says they could try to kill him cause thats worse. wheatley offers to do that. sunnie starts shifting toward his bedroom. he slaps his head on the doorframe and wheatley and parsley start laughing and calling him a pussy. wheatley also calls him that wtf.

zen scolds them and parsley says this is teyas house so its fine. senna warns him his son might learn from him. teya uses message on sunnie that they wont hurt him unless she says so, so get tf out here. senna jokingly offers to melt the door. SP is now screaming pussy oh no.

they get back home and SP starts going off about space. wheatley stops him cause they gotta get ready for the appointment. wheatley speed walks inside lol. sunnie asks android where everyone went. senna shows up as well, sees everyone is gone, and goes to town.

zen and parsley and teya and are in town! bookshop! smearc! hes just working at the counter. parsley tried to wander off and teya grabbed him to fast lol. she introduces parsley and zen to smearc. he says its been a while since hes seen a warforged. he wonders if something big is gonna happen soon. he says he saw lots in 1 place before he moved here. smerc shakes all of zens hands lol. parsley shakes too.

senna makes it back finally. shes like 'oh when did you get back? and is wheatley ok?' zen says hes having a moment. 'i guess i missed something important.' senna says she found teyas doc and its spooky. wheatley is clinging to parsley lol. teya says that sounds about right.

clean doctors home. a skeleton and organs in jars. has teya sits on a cushioned table. he uses a stethescope on teya. typical doc stuff. teya asks if theres any point. they both know shes dead. he pauses. 'so you know. then why come here.' 'because what you did has stopped working.' he will try to fix it if she lets him finish the appointment. senna mumbles to parsley in elvish that hes a fuckin crook.

he yells that the spell is gone! a spell to preserve her but its just gone and demands to what happaned. wheatley perks up and looks outside. theres more scarecrows. teya and senna both know why its gone! the anti magic field from spingledorf. senna says from the fish villiage. he says itll take so much more to fix. parsley yells at him to hurry and fix it.

he says he doesnt have the resources! senna asks what he needs. he says her necromatic energy is much higher and will be harder to make a new spell on her. he slams the table and demands to know how she got so strong. senna sees him slam his hands and reaches for her weapon. he steps back and wonders if his theories were correct.

'very well.' if she changes her mind she knows where to find him every year.

teya asks him to remove his mask. 'humor me. you lied to me for 6 years.' the knowledge has only brought her pain. senna and parsley team up to grab him and remove the mask. missed. senna says to let teya see her face. teya tells sunnie to support her now. sunnie asks doc to let her. sunnie BOLTS AT THE DOC! doc snaps his fingers and sunnie disappears! he claims sunnie is safe.

teyas like fuck this im gonna get his ass and uses firebolt. zen says the scarecrows are moving and surrounding the house. senna avoided being cursed lol. he pulls out a bunch of gems and crushes them and summons bunch of weapons. ROLL INITIATIVE!

he summons a putrid undead spirit and an aberation. aberation wisdom save throws! wheatley and parsley feel madness against their minds and take psychic damage just being near it. it attacks senna! hits. bitch. undead attacks! being near it is a con sav. teya gets poisoned. it attacks teya! hits. con save for teya and she fails and gets paralyzed. fuck.

wheatley casts aura of vitality. cool. SP uses repair action on wheatley.

parsley enters rage and has wild magic. we get a plus 1 to ac thanks parsley. he then throws the handaxe at the doc. hits. attacks putrid. missed.

senna uses ray of frost and he fuckin eats it? his staff is cold now. senna casts spirit guardians and attacks putrid! hits!

teya turned skipped F.

docs turn the fucker. he points at senna and casts finger of death the fucker. somehow i passed but still take half damage. fucker senna is dying. THEN shroud damage senna is dying. THEN HE CASTS BLIGHT ON SENNA. half damage fucker. im at 10 and started at 81. wtf who is this fucker. he tells us to gtfo. wheatley says to let sunnie go and we will leave. he agrees and brings sunnie back. guys senna had 20 ac and fucking got her shit kicked in.

wheatley drags sunnie out. senna doesnt care how badly hurt she is she scoops up teya and carries her out. parsley is pissed but walks out.

the scarecrows are destroyed from the robots but there was also more but they stopped. teyas paralizes wears off. parsley tosses his bag to teya and says theres healing potions. teya has a hard time breathing and when she coughs theres a dust cloud. wheatley casts aura of healing on teya.

senna casts mass heal wounds on everyone. teya force feeds senna potions from parsley. wheatley heals senna. senna tells them to focus on healing themselves. android asks wtf happaned. senna says its her fault. senna says he chose to let them live. senna gives android permission to yell at her and parsley keeps trying to tell her to shut up and she is ignoring him. wheatley says he was fucking terrified and hugs teya.

senna says to finish this convo somewhere else. the scarecrows are staring. theres loud thunder and the house is gone. teya keeps coughing up smoke. wheatley doesnt get infected says raz. wtf.

parsley sees the robot holding the skeleton. teya is gonna cough! doesnt work on wheatley. zen approaches, looks like a multi armed demon with charp claws. he absorbs the cloud and says their spores. from a mushroom. parsley thinks their gonna eat him or something and runs off.

zen says mushrooms are growing in her lungs. teya thought exploding wouldve cooked them out. their growing throughout her entire body. oh no. zen says it wont affect her cause shes dead. more spores pop off lol. senna says she cant kiss teya if shes full of spores. teya says to find parsley first. senna tries to tell sunnie to stand back but hes back unconscious. teya keeps getting status effects.
