We are disgusted by people. Rosario has done nothing wrong, and if you read his surrender notes you would see that he is an affectionate, playful, mellow gentleman who is gentle with children and friendly to strangers. He is perfectly trained, and even knows his commands in Spanish. This boy intended to spend his whole life with the family he loved, and after giving them everything – including his heart, they stepped on it and tossed him out like trash. He is understandably freaked out at the shelter, and why not? He’s only known family life. This sweet, well trained, senior should be spending his golden years on a cushy bed, surrounded by people who love and appreciate him. Maybe if his family had paid a speck of attention to him, he wouldn’t have barked. He needed them to ‘see’ him. Instead they saw him out the door. He has been observed to avoid contact with staff members and has escalated to snapping when uncomfortable. We feel he would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can allow him to acclimate and decompress at his own pace. Rosario is otherwise healthy. INTAKE NOTE – DATE OF INTAKE, 6/17/2019: Rosario allowed no handling due to having a tense body, his ears pinned back, lip licking, and pacing back and forth during intake. OWNER SURRENDER NOTES – BASIC INFORMATION: Rosario is an approx 10 year old medium sized tan male dog that was surrendered to BACC due to barking too much. Owner had Rosario since he was 2 months old and the last time he went to the vet was a year ago. Rosario lived with 2 adults. Rosario is friendly when someone were to come to the house. Rosario has been around a 4 year old child and was described to be affectionate and respectful of the child. Rosario has not lived with dogs, but when on walks he would be respectful of them. Rosario has not been around cats. Rosario has no reported resource guarding. Rosario has no bite history. He is housetrained and has a medium energy level. Other Notes:: Rosario is terrified of loud noises, like fireworks and ambulances, he will hide, panic, and is very nervous when he hears it. Rosario is not bothered when moved from the furniture, when restrained, when his sleep is interrupted, when given a bath, when his coat is brushed, or when his paws are touched. Rosario is not bothered when someone unfamiliar approaches the home or family member. For a New Family to Know: Rosario is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and mellow. Rosario will follow someone around or be in the same room as them when they are home. Rosario will play with toy balls and stuffed toys. Rosario likes to play fetch and tug. Rosario has been kept mostly indoors and will sleep with his owner on the bed. Rosario was fed rice and chicken pedigree wet food 3 times a day. Rosario is house trained and will use the potty on any surface outdoors. Rosario will destroy the walls by scratching it and bark/whine when left home alone. Rosario understands spanish cues like sit, lay down, and come. Rosario goes on brisk walks on the leash and pulls very hard. SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Mild pulling Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: None Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Tense body, open mouth, panting, tail low-tucked, avoided contact, did not approach, stayed near door seeking exit Since Rosario's admission to the care center on 6/17/19, his behavior has remained highly fearful and he is wary of all handling. He has been observed to remain tense and display fearful body language during his interactions and upon attempts to clip a leash to his collar, Rosario has escalated to snapping toward handlers. During an interaction with staff members, Rosario was brought into the assessment room and was unable to settle or relax, but rather stayed near the door or hid from handlers. After some time, he allowed minimal and slow contact from the handler, but continued to display a tense body and overall discomfort. These observations are indicative of a very high level of fearfulness and stress. To eliminate the risk of increasing Rosario's stress level any further, along with the risk of redirecting the stress onto a handler or another animal in our care, we will not be conducting a handling assessment for Rosario at this time. PLAYGROUP NOTES – DOG TO DOG SUMMARIES: According to Rosario's previous owner, he has not lived with dogs, but when on walks he would be respectful of them. 6/18: When off leash at the Care Center, Rosario is introduced to a novel female dog. He is fearful displaying a tucked posture and does not greet or approach the female. He stays in the first pen for the entire session. 6/19: Rosario wandered the pens today and greeted a novel female briefly. He becomes sexually motivated but walks away to continue coloring the pens. He spends the remainder of the session keeping to himself. INTAKE BEHAVIOR - Date of intake:: 6/17/2019 Summary:: Tense, ears back, lip licked, pacing; No handling performed MEDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial:: 6/18/2019 Summary:: Very nervous, trembling, avoids contact, attempts to flee, mouths with contact ENERGY LEVEL:: We are unable to accurately determine Rosario's energy level due to his high level of fearfulness observed in the care center. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 6/19/19: Rosario allowed the handler to place the rope around him and remove him from his kennel. Once outside for a playgroup interaction, the handler slowly bent down to clip a leash to his collar and Rosario was observed to head whip and snap toward the handler's hand. 6/20/19: As the handler was returning Rosario to his kennel, he was observed to stop at a smaller dog's kennel and displayed a wagging tail and a loose body.
