Azkals-UFL Alyansa successfully raise donations despite loss to CF Madrid
by Mav C. Gonzales GMA News Online “It all started when Chris Greatwich sent a bunch of us a message wondering what us football people can do to help,” shared Santi Araneta, chairman of the United Football League. And then the donations and supporters poured in, starting with third division Spanish team CF Internacional De Madrid. The Azkals-UFL Alyansa faced off with CF Madrid in “Dili Kamo Nag-iisa” on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, eventually losing 3-1. Despite the final score, the Philippines still came out a winner as proceeds from the charity event will all go to the victims of tropical storm Sendong in Northern Mindanao. “At the end of the day it's not about winning or losing. It’s about the main cause,” tweeted Azkal skipper Aly Borromeo after the match. Before the game proper, the 8,000 fans present were treated to football parlor games with the Azkals. In “Outkick an Azkal Throw,” the...READ MORE

CF Madrid too good for Philippine Azkals
by Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer MANILA, Philippines—It was a loss that felt more like a win for Philippine football. The Azkals Alyansa bowed to a more cohesive and disciplined Internacionale de Madrid side, 1-3, Saturday night in a charity game that lured a crowd of 8,000 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Proceeds of the match dubbed “Dili ka nag-iisa” will go to relief efforts for the victims of Tropical Storm Sendong in Mindanao and for goal scorer James Younghusband, that was already enough. “I’m glad to get the goal, but for me just being part of this game is already special,” he said. At halftime, CF Madrid officials turned over a check for 10,000 euros to the Philippine National Red Cross chair Sen. Richard Gordon. The stadium observed a minute of silence for the victims before the game and the crowd sung “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from the 1943 Broadway musical Carousel dedicated to the victims. Younghusband scored the only goal for the Azkals—a header from a cross from Chieffy Caligdong—in the 62nd minute, but by that time, the Spanish Tercera division side had...READ MORE

CFIM boosters see thrilling duel vs Azkals
by Olmin Leyba The Philippine Star MANILA, Philippines - CF Internacional de Madrid (CFIM), the third division Spanish club slated to play an Azkals-reinforced Phl team on Jan. 7 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, is expecting a competitive match even if it is basically a charity game. “I think it is going to be an exciting and competitive match, something which I believe we owe to the organizers of the relief efforts who are working so hard, and to all of the supporters who will turn up for the game,” CFIM chief Stephen Kenneth Newman said in a message on the team’s Facebook account. The 4 p.m. match, dubbed “Dili Kamo Nag-iisa,” was intended to help victims of typhoon “Sendong,” which left a trail of death and destruction in Cagayan de Oro Ciity and Iligan last Dec. 17. Gate receipts and other proceeds from the game will be donated to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC). Internacional de Madrid, which competes in the Tercera Division Grupo 7 of the Spanish League System, said it is “particularly sympathetic to this type of tragedies, more so because of the historical and cultural ties between...READ MORE

PNRC beneficiary of charity match
by Bong Pedralvez Malaya
ORGANIZERS of the CF Madrid-Philippine Azkals charity match have tapped the Philippine National Red Cross as the main beneficiary of the fund-raiser for the victims of Typhoon "Sendong" in Northern Mindanao.
Dubbed the "Dili Kamo Nag-iisa" (‘You Are Not Alone’) football benefit, the game is set on Jan. 7 Rizal Memorial Football Stadium and is spearheaded by the Kaholeros, the official cheerleading group of the Azkals, in coordination with the Philippine Football Federation.
"The Red Cross has been chosen as the main beneficiary of the event and the LBC is working with organizers to maximize collecting and distributing donations," said a statement issued by the organizers. "Selected LBC officers worldwide are open to accept donations.
"All LBC branches both here and abroad are serving as drop-off centers for all donations. All these donations will then be turned-over to partner NGOs in the affected areas," the statement added.
