A small PSA about Dawntrail

In the wake of all the harassment and blatant bigotry being hurled at Sena Bryer for her performance as Wuk Lamat in FFXIV Dawntrail, I really think it's time we have a conversation about knee-jerk reactions and how the inability to process them can very easily be a slippery slope to hate.

Like most people, I have sadly at a few points in my life heard a trans woman speak and then my brain takes a second to process it and then goes "That doesn't sound like a lady. That's not a lady"

These knee-jerk reactions aren't uncommon when for instance first meeting a character voiced by a trans VA in a video game. But what's important is that you stop and tell yourself;

"I just had a thought I did not like. Why is that?"

It's SO important that you interrogate yourself whenever you have thoughts like that. You need to dismantle those thoughts, pull them apart and refute them. Only then can you start to unlearn programmed prejudice.

Teach yourself that "they don't sound feminine/masculine" is an invalid train of thought. Ignore it and go on with your life until you stop having that thought. Then you've grown.

It's important that you DON'T indulge these trains of thoughts. Don't follow them, they don't go anywhere good. They go to a place that starts to make you irrarionally upset every time you hear trans people speak because you're not allowing your brain to ignore the disconnect it believes exists between voice and gender.

Thats how you end up with dozens of forum threads where gamers rant about how angry they get when a rather inoffensive character opens their mouth.

Well something super cool happened today! Not only did my print from Sena Bryer arrive today but I also got to run a dungeon with her in ffxiv, and she gave me the commendation!

Made these two while at Con+Alt+Del this past weekend- a Wuk Lamat for Sena Bryer and Bakool Ja Ja for Javier Prusky!

We had the privilege of having our art booth placed next to them in the corner. I was definitely nervous (and excited), but they both turned out to be really kind and gracious neighbors! Overall extremely cool people! Hoping I can run into them again on the circuit and say hello!

I’ll likely be digitizing these later, but the originals have been gifted to their respective voice actors! We’ll see how quickly I can get to these after Christmas!

I have made a donation to a local trans organisation, Aide aux Trans du Québec.

This donation is part of a movement started by Boreal Tempest and Roe Fizzlebeef (the very same from our yearly, beloved Roevember prompt lists!) in order to fight against the hate that has been directed towards members of the FFXIV development team following Dawntrail's release and specifically the bigotry that has been targetted at Sena Bryer.

"Aide aux Trans du Québec (ATQ) supports trans, nonbinary, and questioning individuals. Our work contributes to demystifying transness, and our actions aim to enable gender-diverse people to participate increasingly fully and freely in their social, cultural, and economic lives."

I encourage everyone to support their local (or international!) trans charities and organisation any way you can (even just spreading the word!), and support and love your trans friends and family.

Small little rant but does anyone else hate how people just turn off their brains during the final Dawntrail fight and go on about how Wuk Lamat 'took away our thunder' or memeing how Sena Bryer said the boss's name during it? It wasn't until I was reblogging that very good post about how women in XIV don't get the arc Lamaty'i does and how I mentioned offhandedly about it that the meaning of it to me just hit me and I didn't realize it until like a month after early access?

Lamaty'i wanted to help us as well, not just knock sense into the boss. We helped her during her journey into becoming who she is so I see it as 'not hogging the spotlight' (fuck off Hunt Trains and YouTube comments) but rather 'You helped me when I needed it, let me do the same.' And honestly, I found it rather sweet. No, she's not uber powerful like us but as someone who absolutely would at least try, it means something. Sometimes thoughts and prayers don't work so the next best thing is having an orange kitty come busting in.
