Trivia:
Dubbing premiered in São Paulo on June 29th, 1960
On the 1989 VHS release, the opening titles are in English. The title "A Bela Adormecida" is presented as a subtitle. As a result, the Brazilian voice actors and technical crew are not credited on this release.
This dubbing was used in Portugal until 2008 when a European Portuguese dub was created. As a result, the Brazilian dub was included on the 2003 DVD release.
Release dates : Brazil - June 29, 1960 (São Paulo) Brazil - July 9, 1960 (Pernambuco) Brazil - December 22, 1960 (Rio de Janeiro) Brazil - May 26, 1961 (Minas Gerais) Brazil - May 27, 1961 (Rio Grande do Sul) Brazil - June 22, 1961 (Rio Grande do Norte) Brazil - July 8, 1961 (Espírito Santo) Brazil - December 25, 1961 (Amazonas) Brazil - January 18, 1962 (Paraná) Brazil - December 30, 1962 (Santa Catarina)
All Brazilian credits (VHS, DVD, BLU-RAY and TV's) countain many mistakes :
Maria Norma Moraes Illner, the singing voice of Aurora is credited under the name of Norma Maria.
Joyce de Oliveira's and Nancy Wanderley's roles as Flora and Merryweather are switched.
Maurício Sherman is wrongly credited as Prince Phillip's speaking voice. In the 50s & 60s, he was pairing with Hamilton Ferreira on a humor show, and they got chosen as King Stefan and King Hubert in 1959, and later as Jasper and Horace in One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961). He confirmed before his death in 2019 that he was King Stefan.
Selma Lopes is wrongly credited as the Queen. She confirmed later she didn't dub that role; her first Disney role was the Blue Fairy and Pinocchio's singing voice in Pinocchio in 1966.
Many great Radio and TV Stars of the time auditionned for the role of Princess Aurora : Nega Aparecida, Dulce Martins, Daisy Lucidi ...
It was Maria Alice Barreto's first dubbing performance for Disney. She was the secretary of Fernando Lobo, friend of Aloysio de Oliveira, who was conducting the Musical direction and translation. She was invited to audition, and came early : she watched the other actresses trying out for the role, memorizing the lines, and when her turn came, she already knew it well, and got the role eventually.
A mixing mistake was made in "Once Upon A Dream" in the 1989 VHS : the vocalizations of Aurora (PART 1 : between the speaking lines "Your Highness" and "I'm not supposed to speak to strangers" / PART 2 : when she's dancing with the owl between the two parts of the song) were actually of Mary Costa's for PART 1 and Maria Milde's, the German voice, for PART 2. In the 1996 VHS, this mistake was partially fixed : Maria Norma's vocalizations was restored for PART 2; but PART 1 are this time those of Maria Milde's. Reasons for this are still unknown, though it's possible Maria Norma Moraes might have not dubbed originally the 1st vocalizations.

Day 412 Art meditation, July 19
Dear You,
“Growth can also feel like a breaking point”, I read recently, and this last week felt like a breaking point. Posting photos of tired -me and recharged by Mother Nature-me …
After every nadir of my life, when I think that’s the most depressed I can be, there is another bottom, which is not really the definition of “nadir”, but there we go. I have learned that I am resilient and that is my heart-space. The depth of my occasional depression is equal to the largeness of my heart-space. And the more I am IN my heart-space, the more my ego freaks out, and so I end up in a depression again. The main point is that I’m onto this rollercoaster and try to make new adjustments with awareness.
If my mind has the power to shove me into a 4 day depression, then my mind has the power to connect me to my heart, too. I AM DECIDING.
If only my rugged heart-journey could help more people connect to their hearts … Because once we are there, we will have ONE political party …
I am remembering the Oscars after the pandemic, when one of the themes was being more transparent about who did what gig work before this big movie career of theirs … I loved that Oscars, just a little less inflated, and more real. Being transparent is a heart activity, and one of my core values …
One of the gig jobs I had during my last years in NYC after I lost my Dream creative graphic design art director job, was work for three sisters who owned a coat checking company. It was one of my favorite jobs I’ve ever had. Put on the red lipstick and float into high society of Manhattan with my black coat-checking form-fitting pants and shirt and just WATCH: What makes me so different from these mega wealthy and successful people?  Victoria Secret’s big fashion show, the Glamour Woman of the Year at the Metropolitan Museum, where I peed in a stall next to Selma Hayek, and Phillips Auction house on Park Avenue.
My favorite part was the Coat Checkers I worked with - most of them were Extras for movie sets, waiting for their next extra gig, always auditioning, always believing a bigger opening could happen. They LOVED the NYC actor community, everybody loved movies, including me. I met a coat-checking married couple who lived in a tiny, dark apartment and were poor as church-mice, and didn’t care, because this was exactly where they wanted to live, and what they wanted to do. Being around them filled my soul up…
As a highly sensitive person I needed to get out of NYC, and 9/11 was the last straw of intensity for me, but I will always be grateful to NYC for giving me such huge Yes’s into my self-educated graphic design career. Those years taught me that if I follow my Intuitive Heart, and do what I love, graphic design - even if it meant throwing away an entire BA degree in German and Women’s Studies - that the Yes’s will just start happening EASILY and EFFORTLESSLY. I’ve read tid bits about the Quantum leap, and this must have been that, and now that my siblings have point blank said “no we will not become supportive Members of whatever it is you are doing”, I get to say exactly what I want to say.
Those years in Manhattan, especially the Art Director job in Wall Street, the meetings on top of the World Trade Center, FAO Schwarz building, were some of the happiest of my life. The ‘energy’ of those years felt like a miracle: I knew myself, I showed up, I connected and I asked for a lot of money, and I got a lot of money, I delivered. I wasn’t pushing …  It’s interesting that I wasn’t working with any coaches then, I had this natural ability to listen to my Heart. The same heart space that is in all of us, if ONLY we could each learn how to tap into that space…
It is harder NOT to push when I’m in so much physical pain, and that’s the only issue I have with gig work now and all the driving I’m doing.
I read Sir Ken Robinson’s book “The Element” the year when I was packing up my house on the East Coast to get ready to move back to SF for the 2nd time. I find the point of “The Element” soothing - that my creative tribe is out there, I just haven’t found you yet. I’m listening to my heart for guidance…
That year I also read Brené Brown’s “Daring Greatly”, “Gifts of Imperfection”, “Rising Strong” and watched her two TEDx talks on Shame and Vulnerability, repeatedly.
I even had my astrological chart read for one 3 hour morning, as a way of stepping out of the box, and the messages were filled with juicy, intuitive nuggets. It was the beginning of breaking out of old molds and expectations and learning how to listen to my heart… This is also a longer story!
Reading books have always helped me connect to myself and my Heart and these 4 books, 2 Ted Talks and one Astrological chart reading helped me feel buoyant.
I don’t know how to end this post … I just feel like all humans are trying to find our hearts … and our way to each other … And our ego-spaces hate it. Our ego-spaces just want things to stay the same, hate change and mystery and the worst of all … Trusting and letting go … Which, even as I write this, a part of me just wants some stinking answers and to control this situation.
Thank god for heating pads.
Lots of love, (because I’m convinced that on a pure heart-level, I love everybody),
Anne ◎

Attorney Bruce Carver Boynton (June 19, 1937 - November 23, 2020) was born in Selma. He became a civil rights leader who inspired the Freedom Riders movement and advanced the cause of racial equality through a landmark Supreme Court case Boynton v. Virginia. In 1958, he ordered a cheeseburger while sitting in a whites-only part of a restaurant at a bus station in Richmond, Virginia. He was arrested for trespassing after he refused to leave the restaurant and spent one night in jail. He was a law student at Howard University. At trial, he was represented by Martin A. Martin. He lost his case but decided to appeal until his case reached SCOTUS. Known as Boynton v. Virginia, was argued by Thurgood Marshall.
The court overturned his conviction, affirming that racial segregation in public transportation was illegal. District Judge Myron Thompson said of him: “He did something that very few people would have the courage to do. He said no. To me he’s on par with Rosa Parks” Thompson went on to say, “All he wanted was a cheeseburger, and he changed the course of history.” His actions inspired the Freedom Rides in 1961. While the Freedom Riders were arrested in a few southern states, including Alabama,
Mississippi, and South Carolina, the actions prompted then-President John F. Kennedy to pass orders for strict enforcement of the federal anti-discrimination laws. He received a JD from Howard University; Alabama refused to give him a law license for six years while they “investigated the circumstances” of Boynton v. Virginia. He was forced to move to Chattanooga to practice law until Alabama granted him a license. He worked as a civil rights attorney for most of his career until he retired. He served as Alabama’s first African American special prosecutor. Phillip McCallum, executive director of the Alabama State Bar, issued an apology for the delay in granting Boynton’s license. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Burning Cane (2019)
Director: Phillip Youmans
Screenplay: Phillip Youmans
Cinematography: Phillip Youmans
“It’s hard to dance with the devil on your back. Every time you try to move your feet, nails as sharp as a cleaver cut deep into your flesh. When you’ve got the devil on your back, you ought to just stay still...let him do as he pleases. Once he’s done, find a cleaver for your throat because the Lord has seen your treason!”

Cruel Intentions
Tumblr media
Cruel Intentions was the most forbidden movie my 11-year-old brain could possibly imagine. 1) it was all about sex 2) it starred teenagers and 3) those teenagers’ motivations were just right there in the title. I didn’t see it in full until I was 25 years old. It was re-released for its 20-year-anniversary and I was curious to see how well it held up, both as an artifact of the 90s and as relevant to today. Does it live up to the dark, sticky legacy my 11-year-old self could have imagined? Well...
I hate to say it but...no? The half that has aged fine has aged fine. No real additional layers of meaning or transformative commentary in the past 20 years have been added. But the half that has aged poorly has aged really fucking poorly. While there are moments of truly inspiring cinema to be found here, this sordid tale of high school seniors betraying and fucking each other has no real central hero or villain to root for or against, which makes it kind of a convoluted mess.
Quick plot summary for the uninitiated. It’s summertime for rich assholes in New York City, and Sebastian (Ryan Phillipe) makes a bet with his stepsister Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar, relishing every minute) that he can get the new student starting at school, self-avowed virgin and all around good person Annette (Reese Witherspoon), to sleep with him before the semester starts. But uh-oh, over the course of his deception, he falls in love with Annette for real and can’t deflower her. Until he does anyway? But it’s for love. And he’s still kind of an asshole and terrible person. And then he dies and everyone finds out what a bitch Kathryn is and The Verve makes $20 million because everyone’s new favorite song is “Bittersweet Symphony.”
Some thoughts:
As an artifact of the 90s, you can’t get much better than this. The tiniest sunglasses that do NOTHING! The pastels! The sheer blouses over spaghetti strap tank tops! Even this font in the credits looks 90s. The nostalgia is THICK with this one.
And this soundtrack is excellent through and through. *puts on repeat on Spotify*
What happened to Sean Patrick Thomas? Between this and Save the Last Dance, he was my ultimate ~artistic~ dreamboat guy of 1999. I just saw him in The Curse of La Llorona where he was woefully underused. I need a Sean Patrick Thomas renaissance, stat.
Oh shit, and Tara Reid! Oh what a terrible crier she is here. But I suppose that’s to be expected with her awful mother who is a psychologist and slut-shaming her own daughter when she knows what an asshole Sebastian is.
Sebastian is so insufferably full of himself that it’s frankly nauseating BUT I will say, watching him make fun of Christine Baranski is pretty funny.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is honestly the most flawless and iconic part of this movie because it’s clear she’s having so. much. fun.
It’s confusing when every film and tv show uses 20-something actors to play teens but if they’re starting school in the fall that means Sebastian and Katherine both are maximum 17? And he’s meant to have slept with this many girls already? Bullshit. Have you met 17-year-olds? Especially before Instagram and YouTube were a thing? Give me a break.
Way to throw around a shitton of gay slurs, wowie wow 1999 how I did not miss that. Plus the whole “closeted gay guy has Barbara Streisand cds” thing...god I’m glad we’ve moved past that, not because the joke is offensive, but because it’s just about as funny as saying “Women like cats.” It’s not even a punchline, that’s just you saying a sentence.
I literally can’t believe we’re supposed to root for Sebastian at any point in this movie when he made a bet in order to buttfuck his stepsister.
Selma Blair is overacting like hell in every scene she’s in, but she’s having nearly as much fun as SMG, so I’ll allow it.
And even though I’m obviously so into the #iconic scene giffed above, the way two girls kissing is filmed makes it seem like THE most voyeuristic, salacious thing which is pretty gross.
Why would you put perfume on before you get into a pool, Annette??
SMG’s monologue about unfair pressure for girls is LEGIT. This is probably the only scene in the movie, where she describes how much pressure she’s under to be the perfect little lady even though she’s smart and driven and actually likes sex, that has aged really well and feels very relevant to today.
Um...did Sebastian just get a girl drunk and commit sexual assault? Yeah, that really cancels out SMG’s female empowerment monologue up above like what the snail-sucking FUCK.
The line “But I have theater tickets!!” is the funniest goddamn thing in this movie.
Can we talk about how it makes no sense that Annette likes Sebastian at all? They have nothing in common, and he treats her like an idiot most of the time when he’s not gaslighting her SO HARD. Is it the mystery? Girl, buy yourself a Nancy Drew book, because he’s not fucking worth it.
Ok but “Colorblind” is still an amazing song, damn. And the lighting in this love scene between Annette and Sebastian is incredible. But why are they so sweaty when they’re doing it? And again, why is she into him in the first place???
I can’t believe Sebastian thinks giving Annette the journal will solve things. Who reads this and says “yeah this guy gets a pass”???
Who is this person inciting a riot at a funeral?
I love that we realize what everyone is reading when people start looking at Kathryn and doing the slow head shakes. And why should we be happy about Kathryn’s comeuppance when Sebastian never really proved that he had changed and did all this fucked up stuff too?
I don’t think I realized how nonsensical this movie was in its goal of being ~scandalous~. I feel like I have whiplash between one scene and the next. You hate Sebastian, then he’s kinda dreamy, then he’s a rapist, then we’re meant to sympathize with him because he laughed ONE TIME? Each individual scene is good, but all together they make no real sense. Still a banging soundtrack tho.

You were very much in love with her. And you’re still in love with her. But it amused me to make you ashamed of it. You gave up on the first person you ever loved because I threatened your reputation. Don’t you get it? You’re just a toy, Sebastian. A little toy I like to play with. And now you’ve blown it with her. I think it’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard.

Selma University is a Private HBCU in Selma, Alabama, established on January 1, 1878. It is affiliated with the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention. A few years following legalized slavery in America, a large group of like-minded Alabama African American pastors and their local congregations united in 1868 to form the Alabama State Colored Baptist Convention, later named the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention. The Convention’s primary purpose was to band together to strengthen their local churches and better carry out their organizational purpose of promoting Christian mission, evangelism, and education.
Leaders of the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention felt that the best way to advance their mission and to help congregants in their local churches was to provide them with a good Christian and liberal arts education. The strategy was to build a school to train preachers and teachers from across the State, who in turn would be able to teach members of their congregations and communities; thereby, ensuring that every member of the race was provided an opportunity to gain a good Christian education from pulpits, and gain a good liberal arts education from church-community classrooms.
The Convention agreed to move forward with the idea of establishing a school and elected the first trustees at a meeting in Mobile in 1874. The meeting was led by such noted men as the Reverends W. H. McAlphine, James A. Foster, and R. Murrel.
The first trustees were C. O. Booth, Alexander Butler, W. H. McAlphine, Holland Thompson, and H. J. Europe. In 1877, the Convention voted to locate the school in Selma and the first classes were conducted at Saint Phillips Street Baptist Church of Selma in 1878.
In 1881, the school was incorporated by an act of the legislature under the name of Alabama Baptist Normal and Theological School of Selma. On May 14, 1908, the name was officially changed to Selma University. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #hbcu
