Today I want to talk about Madonna's ninth studio album "American Life", released in the spring of 2003.

It is to date the most personal album of the queen of pop where she shares her ideas through her different songs such as:

-- the American dream -- materialism -- the politics of George W. Bush and the conflict in Iraq

For this album, it is entirely produced by the singer herself as well as the Frenchy producer Mirwais with whom she had worked 3 years earlier on the excellent album “Music” known for its eponymous song. “American Life” is an album mixing electro, pop and folk with rock elements where everything blends perfectly. With this era, Madonna wants to be "political" after having been provocative in the early 1990s with the album "Erotica" (1992) then more mature by attenuating this image with the album "Bedtime Stories" (1994) before becoming show soft, mature and spiritual with the album “Ray of Light” (1998). For this album, the singer decides to dye her hair black and wears a beret where the album cover recalls the Guerrillero Heroico portrait of Che Guevara. However, Madonna will leave this image behind for the rest of the promotion. Finally, it will be the second album to carry the mention Parental Advisory, after “Erotica”, for the presence of the word “F**k” in the song “American Life”.

This concept album will arouse controversy, particularly with the American media. The controversy will start in particular from the original clip of the eponymous song where we can see scenes of violence and pointing the finger at the policy of the President of the United States while Madonna appears as sergeant major, accompanied by a troop of female legionnaires, going to a fashion show in a Mini. During this time, the show turns into an armed struggle and once on the set, from where images specific to the war and its consequences are broadcast on giant screens, she sprays the paparazzi with a water cannon. and sends a lookalike of the president a grenade with the pin removed.

When the clip was released, the critics went so far that Madonna spoke out in a statement: "I am fortunate to be an American citizen for several reasons - one of them is the right to express myself freely, especially in my work. The lead single, whose lyrics criticize the American way of life and received negative reviews as the worst single of all time, would not meet the same success as previous singles ("Music", "Don't Tell Me ” or “Die Another Day”). It will return to the 37th place on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and will remain ranked for 5 weeks while the other singles of the album will not return to the ranking, following the boycott of the American media. However, the lead will have a nice success in Europe where it will be ranked in the top 10 and in particular in 1st place in Denmark, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland while the other singles will experience mixed success in Europe.

The album will be classified n°1 in 14 countries, will generate 5M of sales in the world including 500,000 in France and will receive two nominations with the Grammy Awards 2004. Nevertheless, it will be a failure in the United States and the buzz with 2003 MTV Video Music Awards where Madonna kisses on the mouth Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera as well as the presence of the singer on the song “Me Against The Music” (2003) by Britney Spears will not help the album to do better, in comparison to the album “Music” (2000) which sold 15M worldwide.

The rest ? Madonna will release the same year a compilation titled “Remixed and Revisited” containing mostly remixes of the album “American Life” as well as an unreleased song from “Bedtime Stories” and the controversial live medley recorded at the MTV Video Music Awards the same year. During the year 2004, the queen of pop went on tour with the Re-Invention Tour to promote the ninth album. The tour is considered the biggest music event of 2004, bringing in US$124.5 million, bringing together around 880,000 people across the United States and Europe. Madonna will visit seven countries and 20 cities in total for 56 performances. The documentary "I'm Going To Tell You A Secret" (2006) will reveal the secrets of the tour and shows a sensitive and funny Madonna, who questions herself and does not hesitate to reveal herself completely. Finally, she will make her comeback in 2005 with the album “Confessions On A Dance Floor” and her famous lead single “Hung Up” which will be big hits (number 1 in many countries) allowing Madonna to return to the top of the charts. while the album will sell 12M sales worldwide including 1.7M in the United States. Note that in the United States, the enthusiasm will be less important than in the rest of the world for the album as for the singles.

My opinion: I think it's one of Madonna's best albums because the marriage between folk and electro is successful while the use of effects and autotune allows the album to be ahead of the times. The album is a real concept where Madonna opens up personally about her life, defends her ideas about America and dares to release it at the wrong time. I think it's one of the most important albums in Madonna's career, along with 'Erotica', 'Ray of Light' and 'Confessions On A Dance Floor', although unfortunately it cost him his career in the United States, after having forged an image of a provocative pop icon there for 20 years. Personally, the addition of the song “Die Another Day” (2002) made for the film of the same name and from the wise James Bond, remains consistent with the album both in production and in lyrics.

My favorite songs: I admit that there are a lot of them, that is to say all the singles as well as two non-singles (American Life, Hollywood, Love Profusion, Nothing Fails, Nobody Knows Me, Intervention, Mother and Father and Die Another Day).
