Otterstar (Luffy) - leader of SeaClan, a Clan he formed with a few Clan cats he knew and a bunch of rogues and loners who were living on what is now SeaClan's territory, which includes a half-rocky, half-sandy beachside that was once frequented by Twolegs, but has been closed off to them for quite a while. His den is a driftwood fort on said beach. The other Clan leaders often chastize Otterstar for "acting like an overgrown kit", but he doesn't seem to mind.

Mossyslash (Zoro) - Deputy of SeaClan. Used to be a rogue. Goatkick started a rumor going around the Clan that the green streaks in his fur are moss because he sleeps so much.

Shellpaw - Mossyslash's apprentice. She idolizes him.

Snowyleopard (Law) - SeaClan's medicine cat. Has a suspiciously large store of catnip.

Deerpaw (Chopper) - Snowyleopard's apprentice. Was originally Longwren (Kureha)'s apprentice when she was medicine cat of ThunderClan before she joined SeaClan as an elder, but since Deerpaw hadn't finished his training, he became Snowyleopard's apprentice. He was the runt of his litter and was kicked out by his siblings, so he was adopted by a loner named Yarrow (Hiriluk) who knew Longwren. After Yarrow was killed by a RiverClan patrol, Longwren took Deerpaw in.

Burningdusk (Ace) - Otterstar's adoptive brother along with Lizardflame. His mother died while kitting, and Bearheart (Dadan) ended up suckling him in ThunderClan along with Otterkit. (Lizardflame was already apprentice age when he was taken in.)

Gullpaw - Burningdusk's apprentice. He saved her from a wolf attack when she was a kit.

Lizardflame (Sabo) - Otterstar and Burningdusk's adoptive brother. A pedigreed Russian Blue who used to be a show cat named Tipton's Wuthering Heights Baby. He hated being a show cat, and after a fireplace accident that burned the left side of his face and left him blind in that eye, he was due to be euthanized. Luckily, he made an escape and joined ThunderClan, where he was mentored by Blazeflight (Dragon).

Orangestalk (Nami) - A former rogue known for stealing fresh-kill and herbs from other clans to feed her sister and mother. Her mother unfortunately was killed in a dog attack.

Wavepaw - Orangestalk's apprentice.

Goatkick (Sanji) - Always seen chewing a twig. Frenemies with Mossyslash. Figured out how to cook fresh-kill over a fire.

Crabpaw - Goatkick's apprentice.

Deepshadow (Robin) - A she-cat who is very knowledgeable in the ways of Twolegs and other cat and non-cat races. Seems to have special ties to StarClan, despite not being a medicine cat.

Camaspaw - Deepshadow's apprentice.

Russetflight (Shanks) - Otterstar's previous mentor. Lost his leg defending Otterpaw from a dog attack. Seems to have some unfinished business with Sealnose, and both of them have connections to the late Rogue King, Gold.

Goosepaw - Russetflight's apprentice.

Slugrun (Usopp) - A small brown tabby that is one of Otterstar's closest friends.

Hardclaw (Franky) - A strong and somewhat odd warrior with mutual feelings towards Deepshadow.

Woodpaw - Hardclaw's apprentice.

Fishleap (Jinbe) - A former kittypet (and later RiverClan cat) senior warrior who's sort of a father figure to most of the apprentices.

Codpaw - Fishleap's apprentice, who Fishleap doesn't seem to show any bit of favoritism towards compared to the other apprentices.

Duckwood (Vivi) - A former kittypet who used to belong to a rich family. She is very close with Orangestalk.

Anemonepaw - Duckwood's apprentice.

Sealnose (Buggy) - Very sensitive about his nose. Seems to have unfinished business with Russetflight.

Crushjaw (Bonney) - A former rogue who is close friends with Otterstar.

Otterstar is a spotted orange she-cat with spiky fur. They are the leader of Seaclan and are 39 moons old. They have light yellow eyes, a stripe of pale red fur down the middle of their back and is lithe and graceful. They are sarcastic and tough and can most often be found climbing trees.

SeaClan lives on the watery coasts of Clan territory, in lush territory with a wonderful lake breeze during the warmer seasons. SeaClan prides itself on its internal conformity and all-for-one additude, greatly emphasizing the wise - and age equals wisdom within SeaClan. They wish for obedience and positivity among their clan, and take worshipping StarClan seriously.

Lushstar, Current Clan Leader - Self sacrificial and fericly defensive of his clan, Lushstar is the youngest of the Clan leaders. He can be somewhat cold and passive towards others, but values the tradition in his clan with an unmatchable passion.

Sleekmoth, Current Clan Deputy - Once a cat born in MarshClan, Sleekmoth has a deep adoration for his new home Clan. Quickly gaining respect and notaraity for his charisma and detail-oriented mindset.

Brinewatcher, Current Clan Healer - Having been dropped from the sky as a kit, Brinewatcher was destined to at least be a little special within SeaClan. While her origin is unknown and her personality can make her seem a bit distant and her hobbies make her seem strange, Brinewatcher is a talented healer and not to be misjudged.

Reefthunder seemed sad, thought Coralkit as she splashed around in a puddle. The deputy's head rested glumly on her paws. With a giggle, the young kit stomped her paws and sent splashes of water towards the elder cat until a creep of a smile graced her features. It was good to see her happy again.

Meanwhile, a brave Roachkit slipped away from the prying eyes of his babysitters. Eelripple and Goosegleam were busy fussing over his brother, leaving the kit free to do as he pleased. He snuck behind a bush and found a small hole in the rock wall of the nursery, squeezing his body through until he popped out the other side. A few hours later, Roachkit returned proudly carrying the wings of an insect to the horrified faces of the two warriors.

"We have no herbs to spare - I need them all to ensure they survive," explained Lotuslake to Shellbone. The warrior had come with news of the neighbouring clan GrouseClan, needing herbs, but the medicine cat would not risk the lives of the two tiny kits just to boost Clan relations. Shellbone flicked her tail in annoyance and left to deliver the news. Eelripple accompanied her as the two journeyed to the border, only to be interrupted by the scent of blood.

"Strike?" Eelripple's voice wavered at the sight of her brother's torn pelt. "What are you doing out here? Can we help?" The small patrol listened as the loner explained that he was looking for his mate and kits who should be about a moon old by now.

"Her name is Jakada," he pleads. Shellbone and Eelripple exchange worried glances.

"She died giving birth," Eelripple broke the news to her brother and watched as his face fell, crestfallen. "Come with us. You can meet your sons - Guppykit and Roachkit. Two big, healthy boys." At this, Strike's expression brightened and he hesitantly agreed to follow the two cats back to camp.

"There is someone I have to meet." Escorted on patrol by Waterstar, Strike leads the ginger tom towards the twoleg place where a young black she-cat stands waiting. "This is Jozi, my daughter. She knows a thing or two about healing. Maybe she has information that can help you find your missing warrior?"

Waterstar nods curtly and allows Strike to break the news of Jakada's death to his daughter. There was a time and place for interrogation. Jozi offered them each a mouse and the trio shared a meal while discussing the disappearance of Shrubslip. Unfortunately, they returned empty-pawed.

Went birding around the area surrounding Distrito T-Mobile in San Juan for a couple hours.

Spotted a bunch of the usual birds. Greater Antillean grackles, bananaquits, grey kingbirds… The grackles are generally the first thing I see. And hear. I swear I hear their squeaky-gate calls in my sleep now. I’d much rather have the melodic sound of the coquí etched in my memory, but instead I’m subjected to the clacks and squeaks of these grackles in my dreams…

Gray kingbirds seem to be everywhere in Puerto Rico, though strangely, they weren’t as vocal today. Pairs usually sit on the lines and call to each other almost constantly, but I guess they were busy with something else this afternoon.

Bananaquits are tiny and a nightmare to spot if they don’t want you to see them, but they’re pretty much ubiquitous. I’d be surprised if I’ve submitted a checklist in Puerto Rico that doesn’t have at least one bananaquit in it. Most high-pitched, soft chirping noises are likely going to belong to one of them, although many warbler calls sound similar. Bananaquit songs manage to be simultaneously distinct and confusing; few birds have a buzzy song quite like they do, but the songs appear to be learned, which makes different individuals’ songs sound like potentially different species. I would be surprised if this species didn’t have regional song dialects/accents.

The feral pigeons here vary a ton in size, though the ones today were quite a lot stockier than the doves they were foraging with. They also seem to be the only pigeons/doves in the area that sometimes glide with their wings at a sharp dihedral. This appears to be for display purposes; I remember that the ones from the old Disaster Recovery Center would usually do the glide immediately after mating.

Saw a ton of white-winged doves. A pair noticed me looking, and each bird began flicking its tail and bobbing its head. They seem to spread their tails somewhat rhythmically as a stress response, rather than moving them erratically as is common with other birds. The white bars on the outsides of their tails accentuate this motion.

Quite a few Zenaida doves as well, though these guys were slightly shier than the white-winged doves. I don’t think I heard any of their songs today, which is somewhat unusual.

There are surprisingly few house sparrows in most places I go here. They’re not native, so that’s probably a good thing, but I still find it strange how they don’t even seem common in urban areas. I heard some far off and watched a couple follow each other between the traffic light poles, but that was about the extent of it.

Finally got a good enough monk parakeet ID for the life list, though I’m pretty certain I’ve heard them here before. They aren’t native to Puerto Rico but have established colonies along the island. Unlike the white-winged parakeets I’ve been seeing up until now, the monk parakeets have rather solid-colored wings without any obvious field marks.

Heard a bird I didn’t recognize in a short tree by the side of a road, but I never managed to see the bird itself. It sung very softly and awkwardly, reminding me of one of the introduced munia species. I wasn’t able to get a sound ID either; the recording would have been too soft, and I am not very strong at identifying quick and complex songs.

Walked around one of the artificial lakes and was surprised to see a plain greyish sandpiper and a pair of killdeer along the rock and concrete shore. I determined the smaller sandpiper to be a spotted sandpiper, so that’s another bird for the life list. These sandpipers are somewhat solitary and perhaps the size of a thrush, if that. They bob their entire bodies as they run across the shore, as if they are wind-up or drinking-bird toys brought to life.

The killdeer didn’t seem too thrilled about me staring at them, and one seemed to be starting a broken-wing display. I walked away.

Heard a very high-pitched siiii call, reminiscent of a Puerto Rican spindalis. It was a while before I actually saw the bird, but my identification turned out out to be correct. This particular bird was a female or immature.

I heard an unfamiliar call and began to look for the source. I spotted a fledgling that is likely a red-legged thrush. I later saw an adult thrush carrying a berry in that direction, which points to this fledgling being one of its own:

Saw a surprising number of pearly-eyed thrashers today. Which was only two or three, but for them being fairly secretive birds, I’d consider that significant. Usually I hear their songs before I see them. Actually think I may have seen more of them today than the northern mockingbirds that are usually so visible.

There weren’t many birds at the T-Mobile District or convention center themselves. Nor were there many people around the latter place. Something about the area feels liminal:

And yes, Seacats can go on land - but only for a few minutes at a time. As long as their gills are wet they can still breathe. However, they can't speak while on land bc their voices are evolved to travel through water, not air.

"I dare you to hunt that chicken," Eelripple grinned as the pair of young warriors approached the wooden twoleg den. It was old and half rotted, but the scent of twolegs was strong. In a fenced off area, two plump chickens pecked at the ground. It was certainly a tempting meal.

"I'll catch both of them, just you wait," came Shrubslip's reply. Before Eelripple could talk her down, the pale she-cat climbed over the fence towards the birds. A creak from nearby, followed by a slam, and Eelripple turned to see a twoleg emerge from the nest entrance. Too late to warn her friend, she watched helplessly as it picked up a writhing Shrubslip before disappearing into the darkness from where it came.

Racing back to camp, she caught sight of a breathless Shellbone and a frightened Goosegleam, learning that the others encountered a swarm of twolegs while training. In the next few days, Waterstar and Reefthunder assemble search parties in between consoling a stricken Eelripple, but Shrubslip was nowhere to be found.

A tiny mewling reached the ears of Lotuslake as she picked her way through the grasses that lined the dunes. A sign from StarClan, perhaps? Following the sound, the medicine cat found the cooling body of a black she-cat beneath a rotten twoleg structure. Around her neck sat a shiny leather collar and at her belly lay two tiny kittens. She brings the two twin boys back to camp and introduces them to the Clan as Guppykit and Roachkit, not hiding their origin.
