‘Milan must aim for Scudetto’

Lucas Paqueta has declared that Milan ‘must aim’ for the Scudetto, Marco Giampaolo is a ‘professor’ and whoever plays for the club is a ‘champion’.

Paqueta returns to Milan after a summer in which he helped Brazil to Copa America glory, and he wants to taste that winning feeling with the Rossoneri.

“The team have great players and achieved great results so far,” the midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.

“We deserve the Champions League, we must get back to winning it by playing good football.

“We must aim high, we mustn’t settle for fourth or second place. Our objective must be first place.

“Gattuso taught me a lot. He had great success as a player. As a Coach he really helped me adapt, teaching me many things. 

“For me, Giampaolo is a professor. He has new ideas and is precise in the way he transmits them.

“He’s changed our style of play, both in attack and defence. He’s attentive to everything and that allows us to play well.

“Playing at San Siro gives you a huge buzz. When I saw my idol Kaka there, I thought about how good it was.

“When I saw the players there, I imagined myself there too. It was always a great thrill. Playing at San Siro is incredible and I hope to do so many more times.”

The 21-year-old caught the eye in his half-season with the Diavolo, but he made it clear he could do better.

“All the players who played for Milan were hard-workers. I hope to do some of that work so I can become a winner with this shirt.

“Milan are a great club who are known all over the world. They’re a point of reference in Brazil.

“Whoever plays for Milan is a champion. They’re a team who have won seven Champions Leagues.”

Finally, he was asked about the language barrier.

“I still have some difficulties, even though I understand it now. I’m still studying the language, so I can speak it and understand it better.

“Greetings to all the Milan fans. I promise them a good season.”

WTF Friday - Caldara! Higuain! Other Random Ramblings!

What is there not to love about this deal from the Milan side of things? Not much.

We acquired the best goal scorer we have had since Ibra left and we are hoping that we’ve acquired a 24 year old CB that can partner Romagnoli for the next 5 years and maybe more. That means we go into next year with a CB duo that not only is very talented but both will be only 24 years old at the END of this season. They will start the year flanked by a 21 year old Calabria and a 25 year old Rodriguez. At some point during the year the back line will be bolstered by 24 year old Conti. 

That’s 5 Italians under 24 across the back (including Donnarumma) and ‘Old Man’ Rodriguez who, though he might be Swiss, sure must have SOME Italian blood in him. How else could he be so easy on the eyes?

Higuain? A stone cold killer. Cutrone can deputize under the Argentine and learn the dark arts from him. 

It’s all wins all around.

The only negative I can possibly see is that this is now a couple moves where we’ve kicked the can down the road with a loan with mandatory option to buy. The Kessie deal was the same. At some point those will hit us, but I’m sure Leo knows that and will plan accordingly.

So why did Juve do this? 

Well..... I think you can justify why they did this but I’m sure it really makes SENSE. Yes they have a lot of attackers and yes they have a lot of salary allocated to them, but did a club with their resources really NEED to move someone? Did they need to do it so bad that they gave up a mighty nice looking CB prospect as well? I’d say no and no.

Also, why bring back Bonucci? This idea that he is this spectacular long ball playing CB and pillar of defense is a little foolish IMO for 2 reasons. 1) he’s a year removed from being that guy. In footballing terms a year on your clock can be like 10 years 2) Can someone give me the history of guys that left their long time club, came back later and were HALF the player they were before? You can’t because there isn’t one. Look at us with Kaka and Shevchenko. Both came back only to be a shell of what they used to be. Clubs move on. Locker rooms change. In short, you can’t go home again. 

Now the one thing I will give Juve is they seem, at least on paper, to be going for it. If you watched their Netflix doc, you saw how they talked about winning the CL, but they were never truly all in. Two moves tell me they are actually all in this time. One is obviously bringing in Ronaldo. The other is letting Buffon go. The bigger move is the latter. Buffon is clearly past it, but they played him in CL games due to some sort of loyalty. That was foolish and they corrected their mistake. 

Also, they did to Real Madrid exactly what they did to Napoli a few years ago. They looked at their closest comptetitor and signed away arguably their best player, no matter the cost. 

My big question is whether they will go for it so much that they don’t worry so much about the league. That’s what Milan did in the 2000s (2 CL titles, 1 runner up and only 1 league title) and that’s what Real Madrid have done over the last 6 years ( 4 CL titles and 1 league title). Both were pretty successful at it. Aiming for a treble every single year is not realistic. Not for any club. 

I still  don’t think they have the guts. I really think at the end of the day another Scudetto is more important to them than a CL. 

Montolivo

There were reports this week that Montolivo’s contract would be terminated. FINALLY! I hated his signing from day 1. He was always weak willed, had zero leadership skills and always look scared. Probably 3 of the worst possible characteristics of a center mid. One of my longest standing thoughts on here is that this club would never turn the corner as long he was a starter for this team. Year after nauseating year he remained until last year he was finally usurped. Let’s just wash our hands of him and be done.

Gustavo Gomez

There’s also reports that Gustavo Gomez has been loaned out to Palmeiras of Brazil. Good for him. I always liked the guy and he was never gonna get a chance here. Hopefully all goes well for him. 

What’s next? 

We have to continue to address the glut of strikers. Niang and Lapadula are officially gone. Bacca is in town negotiating a way out. That kinda leaves things between Silva and Kalinic for the last spot. One will probably go, but not both.

The keeper situation still needs sorted. Five are currently on the books. Plizzari and Gabriel need homes.

Whatever comes back in any of those moves needs to probably be midfield or winger depth. If nothing comes back it’s not the end of the world, but help would certainly be appreciated. 

Locatelli

Last thing. I watched most of the friendly against Spurs and Locatelli still looks like he needs some major seasoning. I didn’t see the kid who had a pretty strong final month of last season. His positioning remains awful. As a DM your job is to make space for yourself to bail out teammates under pressure and move the ball. In reality he always looks like he’s man marking someone even when we are on offense. He’d rather hold hands with an opponent than help out a teammate. Not good. That goal against Juve was almost 2 years ago now and we’ve seen very few solid moments much less whole games since. Can he hold his own against weaker Europa or Serie A competition? Probably. Can he be on the field against good teams? No chance.

If a supposed ‘big name’ comes into the midfield a loan move would make a LOT of sense.

Biglia aiming for Scudetto with AC Milan

After beginning his second campaign in an AC Milan shirt, Lucas Biglia insists that he feels a bigger part of the team and expects the club to be challenging for the Scudetto.

The Argentina international was one of a raft of signings that arrived at the Rossoneri last summer and the time it took for the players to gel had an impact on their failure to achieve Champions League qualification.

“I feel more integrated, the intention after the World Cup was to dedicate myself to Milan,” Biglia told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I have to thank [coach Gennaro] Gattuso and his staff. In the last two months of the season I had an injury that influenced me at the World Cup, but then I came back here to find my best condition.”

“I made myself available to a specialist to put my back in place and came here to work. Little by little I’ll be back at my best.”

The Rossoneri will need the 32-year-old to return to the form that made him one of the standout performers in Serie A when arriving at Lazio, if they are to reach Biglia’s high expectations.

“We have to look at ourselves and, as Gattuso says, raise the bar,” stated the South American. “The goal is the championship, it must be if we want to take Milan back to where they belong.”

Whether the former Biancocelesti midfielder sees the Rossoneri achieving that goal in the short-term is another matter, with him already looking to extend a deal that runs until the summer of 2020.

“I would like to renew [my contract],” admitted Biglia. “I feel good here, I have adapted after a hard year and I feel settled with my teammates.

“They give me so much confidence and the relationship with the coach is great, I do what he asks me to for the team.”

1. Chievo Verona vs Juventus (Serie A) 5:00 PM

The Italian Serie A kicks off this weekend with champions Juventus travelling away to Chievo Verona for their first game of the season.

All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo who signed for Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

  The Portuguese superstar has conquered England, Spain and now set his sights on dominating the Italian league.

He and his Juventus teammates face a tricky test to minnows Chievo who will be no pushovers, as Ronaldo as they aim to clinch their seventh straight Scudetto.

2. Chelsea vs Arsenal (Premier League) 5:30 PM

The biggest game of the weekend comes from the Premier League where London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal face off at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal new boss Unai Emery started on a losing note against Champions Manchester City while new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri started with a win against Huddersfield Town.

  The Gunners boss will be under pressure to get at least a point in his second game, while Sari will want an improvement on the performance that saw them get three points in their last encounter.

A London Derby between two teams that will be competing in the Europa League this season, but a with bragging rights at stake both sides would be up for a feisty encounter.

3. Lazio vs SSC Napoli (Serie A) 7:30 PM

Kaka said Ronaldo’s arrival will liven up the Serie A and the biggest clash of the opening day features two of the top sides last season Lazio and SSC Napoli.

Lazio narrowly lost out on a Champions League place to Inter Milan while SSC Napoli crumbled at their title challenge to Juventus in the last games of the season.

  Simeon Inzaghi will hope to start the season on the right foot but faces Carlo Ancelotti who also aims to mark his Napoli debut with a win to begin their challenge for the Scudetto.

The biggest game in Italy this weekend sit down and enjoy.

4. Barcelona vs Deportivo Alaves (La Liga) 9:15 PM

Barcelona begin their La Liga campaign against Deportivo Alaves after a successful transfer window bringing in star players such as Arthur Melo and Arturo Vidal to replace the departed Andres Iniesta and Paulinho.

Ernesto Valverde’s side won the La Liga and Copa Del Rey titles last season but it seems like an under achievement after watching their archrivals Real Madrid win the UEFA Champions League for the third consecutive time.

  Barcelona also strengthened in attack with Brazilian forward Malcom which has raised questions of where Ousmane Dembele will play.

The Catalans are favourites to retain the La Liga but face a tricky Alaves side who did well staying up last season.

Sunday, August 19

5. Manchester City vs Huddersfield Town (Premier League) 1:30 PM

Pep Guardiola’s added Algerian international Riyad Mahrez to the side which started the season where they left off last season winning the Community Shield against Chelsea and also their league opener against Arsenal.

Manchester City face a Huddersfield side that were battered by Chelsea in their opener and will aim for their first point of the season at the Etihad.

  The reigning Premier League champions will be without star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne for a while after he sustained an injury in training but have enough squad depth to cope.

Huddersfield will not lie down for a whooping which makes this an interesting encounter.

6. Real Madrid vs Getafe (La Liga) 9:15 PM

Real Madrid begin their La Liga campaign against Getafe without star forward Cristiano Ronaldo and also Zinedine Zidane who resigned after triple Champions League triumphs.

The reigning European champions have found life without Ronaldo difficult as they lost in the UEFA Super Cup final to Atletico Madrid.

  New manager Julen Lopetgui has his work cut out, as a minimum of the league triumph is required at the Santiago Bernebau this season.

They face Madrid based rivals Getafe in their opener but have to bounce back if they are to challenge Barcelona for the title.

A match for local bragging right is the way to wrap up the football weekend.

Juventus are favourite to win Serie A again but there are reasons to doubt them

The mind games began at the end of May. Not from a pretender to the Juventus throne, but from Maurizio Sarri’s predecessor.

Sarri had yet to be announced as the Old Lady’s new coach back then but Massimiliano Allegri seemed to have a very good idea of who the club were lining up as his replacement. In his goodbye press conference, he once again stoked up the debate that had raged throughout the final two years of his tenure.

Does how you win matter? Last time he checked Juve’s motto, he didn’t think so. It claims “winning is the only thing that counts” and Allegri is a born winner. In coaching, guys like him are few and far between. As he sees it, you either got it or you don’t. Winning is not something you learn.

“I could give you an example,” he said, “but if I do, I’d bring the house down.” Some in the room thought Allegri meant Sarri who, at the time, had lifted only one trophy his whole career: the Serie D Coppa Italia.

In his final TV interview before heading off on his holidays, Allegri did what he often does, downplaying his own role in Juventus’ success while championing the work of the club and its players. He dismissed the idea that his successor has a big job on his hands to maintain the standards he set. “It’s a winning team,” Allegri said. “It’s a team that has got what it takes to keep winning. It’s a team that’s way better than the rest and has a 90 percent chance of winning [the league] again.”

Innocent and nonchalant in his delivery, Allegri would never have said such a thing in the event he were staying. It was, perhaps, a subtle way of applying some pressure on his successor.

While many still make Juventus favourites for the Scudetto, which would be their ninth straight if successful, they do seem less of a sure thing than usual.

For a start, Sarri’s appointment is the most left-field since that of Gigi Maifredi in 1990. Sure, the circumstances are different. Sarri is undoubtedly better prepared and more experienced than Maifredi was then. Juventus, as a club, are united behind him and he’s taking over a winning team. Make no mistake: if Sarri can get his ideas across and make a group of players this talented play in the style he implemented so successfully at Napoli, then we could be about to see the best Juventus of all-time.

But doubts remain.

Are the goalkeepers as comfortable on the ball as he needs them to be? Is a defence used to defending man-to-man, backing off and defending its own penalty area prepared to go zonal and step up, playing with wide open spaces behind it? And what of the attack?

Juventus are undoubtedly fancied to win Serie A for a ninth straight time but this season might be their toughest campaign yet in terms of competition.

One of the challenges Sarri faced when attempting to impose his style at Chelsea in England was the tentativeness or unwillingness to play quick combinations. Midfielders needed too many touches. Wingers held onto the ball too long, stopping and starting, allowing opposition defences to regroup and re-organise.

On Juve’s preseason tour, Sarri spoke about the re-education process for his new squad and how he needs time to change the habits of players who’ve worked under different coaches with different ideas for such a long time. His biggest challenge might be the players’ muscle memory. Sarri must convince Giorgio Chiellini, 35, and Cristiano Ronaldo, 34, to play another way. In fact, during the Asia leg of Juve’s preseason, he described his job as organising 10 players around CR7.

Sarri is the one who will have to adapt to the winner of multiple Ballons d’Or, and to Juventus. It’s not going to be the other way round. And so, a coach used to relying on a contingent of 13-14 players now has to keep a squad of superstars happy, something Allegri made look easy, and the club hasn’t helped Sarri in this regard.

For a start, Juventus have tried to offload a number of big names without success. Gonzalo Higuain has been returned to sender, to say nothing of forgotten man, Marko Pjaca. The Bianconeri tried to sell Paulo Dybala not once, but twice, and the Argentine is still bizarrely up for sale. Mario Mandzukic and Sami Khedira, who signed new deals last season, know they are on the market. As it stands, Juventus are going to have some very tough decisions to make when it comes to deciding who doesn’t make the cut for their 23-man Champions League squad.

We will have to see whether the club’s efforts to ease the strain on the payroll and recalibrate the wage-to-turnover ratio — the European transfer window closes on September 2 — have in turn caused friction elsewhere. Juve’s no drama togetherness has underpinned their success over the past nine years. A happy camp could potentially be compromised although saying that, one might counter that Higuain and Dybala aren’t the ones inconvenienced; the club is. Unfortunately for the balance sheet, they don’t want to be anywhere else.

Juventus’ appeal is higher than it’s ever been this century. Testament to that is Matthijs de Ligt‘s decision to join from Ajax when he pretty much had his pick of Europe’s elite and in that context, the scepticism and reservations surrounding Juventus are hard to square. Projection plays a part here. After eight consecutive league titles, there is an element of “Juve fatigue” among neutrals and fans of other Italian clubs. But it’s also a reflection of the increased competitiveness of the league and the indications this year are that Juventus have less margin for error, not that they make many mistakes.

Conte and Lukaku are new arrivals at Inter Milan this summer and should be integral to a much stronger title push in 2019-20.

In my opinion, three teams have a realistic shot at winning the title.

Inter have to be taken seriously not just because they have strengthened across the board, but, to follow Allegri’s logic, on the basis that they have a born winner at the helm in Antonio Conte. Much more is expected of Napoli in Carlo Ancelotti’s second year, too, and rightly so now that Kostas Manolas is partnering Kalidou Koulibaly in defence.

Standards are rising across the league, too. Roma have appointed the impressive Paulo Fonseca to managed a flawed, but fixable, squad. Milan have tailor-made their team for Marco Giampaolo, while Atalanta and Torino have retained what made them great last year. Lazio look capable of making it rain goals like they did two years ago.

Tax breaks have enabled Brescia to bring Mario Balotelli home and Fiorentina to give Franck Ribery a swansong. Cagliari have assembled an ambitious team, including the returning Radja Nainggolan, for their centenary season. Bologna have invested roughly €60m in players like successful loanees Riccardo Orsolini and Nicola Sansone, hoping to pick up where they left off under Sinisa Mihajlovic, who is continuing to coach the team while undergoing treatment for leukaemia. Genoa look like they could be very exciting with Aurelio Andreazzoli in charge.

The number of clubs hiring coaches who set out to dominate opponents and win games rather than sit back and aim not to get beat is encouraging as Serie A continues along a progressive, expansive path.

For Juventus, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be another procession this year. Still, with Sarri the hope is that its the beginning of a process to something bigger and better than what went before. Allegri isn’t the only one curious to see whether that’s possible or not.

AC Milan are aiming to bolster their attacking solutions with the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Andrea Belotti or Alvaro Morata, in accordance to CEO Marco Fassone.

Leonardo Bonucci arrived at AC Milan in a shock shift from Juventus.

“We have not had any offers,” Watzke reported. “We will hold out a number of more times, but not extended anymore. I personally would want if he stays but there are a number of golf equipment on this planet exactly where he can of course gain more.”

Parma up, down and back again

Parma are the ultimate phoenix from the flames success story, as they went from bankruptcy in 2015 to becoming the first Italian side ever to earn three back-to-back promotions from Serie D to the top flight. The Ducali secured their Serie A status comfortably in the first season back and aim to keep building.

Fans of Calcio in the 1990s and early 2000s will fondly recall the star-studded Parma that battled for the Scudetto with Juventus, won the Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 1993, two editions of the UEFA Cup, three Coppa Italia trophies and an Italian Super Cup. This was the squad packed with talent like Enrico Chiesa, Gianfranco Zola, Hernan Crespo, Lilian Thuram, Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Cannavaro.

However, Parma had never even set foot in Serie A before 1990. They appeared out of nowhere, buoyed by the deep pockets of Parmalat and their patron Calisto Tanzi to quickly become one of the so-called ‘Sette Sorelle’ – the seven sisters who started every season as Scudetto contenders. The Serie A title was the only trophy that always eluded them, although they came close several times.

It turned out that the Parmalat pockets weren’t so deep after all and uncovered the biggest financial scandal in Italian history. In 2003, it emerged the company was propped up by techniques that varied from creative accounting to outright falsification, disguising €14bn of debt.

The football club continued to thrive even with no funds, as it played on under temporary owners awaiting a takeover, finishing fifth in Serie A in 2004-05 and reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals.

Tommaso Ghirardi purchased the club in January 2007 and following the need to sell players at an alarming rate, they were relegated after 18 years in the top flight. Their stay in Serie B was not a long one, as they finished second and gained promotion after just one season. There were bright spots, a feeling of rebirth and a club record seven straight Serie A victories, even finishing sixth with Antonio Cassano in 2014.

That celebration of a Europa League preliminary round place very quickly turned into déjà vu and panic. That summer, Parma were denied a UEFA licence due to unpaid tax contributions. It was the first sign of trouble, which Ghirardi continued to deny with utterly undeserved confidence to the bitter end, bankruptcy in March 2015.

This time, there was to be no reprieve awaiting new owners, Parma had to begin again from the amateur division, Serie D. Captain Alessandro Lucarelli, a man who spent most of 2014-15 acting as a representative of the players to media, unions and banks, made the ultimate sacrifice and stayed at the Stadio Tardini in Serie D. Lucarelli was an integral part of the side that made history with three consecutive promotions, able to finally retire once his mission had been completed and they were back in the top tier.

The journey doesn’t end there, though. Parma must continue to fight for their status and remember how quickly it could all go away again. In October 2018, the local businessmen who rebooted the club in Serie D, collectively known as Nuovo Inizio (new beginning), took back the majority shares that had been sold to Chinese group Desports in 2017. There is also still 10 per cent of the club owned by small shareholders and fans, a revolutionary idea in Italian football.

On the field, Coach Roberto D’Aversa took charge in December 2016 and created a 4-3-3 approach that focuses on quick counter-attacks. It might not always be easy on the eye, but it gets the job done and gave Gervinho a career reboot that nobody expected. So much of Parma’s fortunes last season depended on the form of Gervinho and Roberto Inglese, so it’s wonderful to see they’ll stick together, the centre-forward earning a permanent move from Napoli.

Those two players alone accounted for 20 of the team’s 41 goals and that is untenable. They’re moving beyond that this summer, bringing in exciting French winger Yann Karamoh and 19-year-old striker Andrea Adorante from Inter, with Gaston Brugman and Jose Machin bolster the midfield from Pescara. Andreas Cornelius also gives Serie A another shot on loan from Atalanta.

In the middle of the park, Juraj Kucka carried much of the load, providing key goals, tenacity and tactical awareness and he was a leader on the pitch, at times barking out instructions to his teammates, almost as if the 32-year old is already preparing for a job as a Coach after his playing career ends.

At the back, the evergreen Bruno Alves proved what an inspired signing he was from Glasgow Rangers. While his ‘no holds barred’ tactics to defend the Parma goal was intimidating to opposition forwards, his sumptuous free-kicks from all angles grabbed the headlines, particularly a last-minute equaliser against Milan in December. 

Given the added weapons provided for D’Aversa, we can expect a more entertaining Parma side, and while it may not match the thrilling performances of the teams coached by Nevio Scala and Alberto Malesani, it is a sign that the Crociati are continuing to climb the Calcio ladder all over again.
