When MLB players return from injury during the season, they'll often play a few games in the minor leagues to ease themselves back. For baseball fans who live far from any major-league stadium, these games are convenient ways to watch superstars in action, and they tend to draw huge crowds.
Anyway, I'm watching my Rochester Red Wings take on reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders tomorrow night. They are doomed.
#let's see if he can break the attendance record (set in 2012 by andy pettitte - another rehabbing yankees pitcher)#the announcement came at around 7 last night and by 10:30 only standing-room tickets were left#baseball#gerrit cole#rochester ny

Not a great record to finish the year, but they had an objectively tough schedule. Along with the mess of continuous comings and goings. This is bonkers:
Indeed, the Bisons had a franchise-record 80 players appear in a game this season and made 227 roster moves. With the parent Blue Jays struggling most of the season and selling pieces at the trade deadline, the Buffalo-Toronto shuttle was in constant motion. Buffalo used a franchise-record 50 pitchers.
The article's paywalled. Text is below the cut...
Some individual success but too much team failure.
That’s a pretty simple summary of what’s transpired over the last six months for the Buffalo Bisons, who wrapped up a washout of the season in the standings with Sunday’s 8-4 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in sun-splashed Sahlen Field.
Sunday’s result left the Bisons with a final record of 68-80 and 31-43 in the second half of the International League season. Buffalo dropped its last four games and finished 17th overall out of the 20 teams and 19th in the second half.
It’s the first losing campaign in Casey Candaele’s four years as manager and the most losses for Buffalo since it went 61-82 in 2011, when it was a New York Mets affiliate.
“You always want to win here,” Candaele said after the finale. “I like Las Vegas (site of the Triple-A National Championship Game), so I would have loved to go to Vegas but it didn’t work out. We had a lot of turnover here and that happens in Triple-A sometimes.”
But there were plenty of positive contributions in Toronto from 2024 Bisons like Bowden Francis, Spencer Horwitz, Addison Barger, Leo Jimenez and Will Wagner. And the Bisons got 19-homer seasons from Will Robertson and Damiano Palmegiani, the latter player belting a two-run shot Sunday to get a slice of that team lead.
“Guys got to get up there (to Toronto), get experience and held their own,” Candaele said. “It felt like most of our team ended up in the big leagues and contributed in some way. ... So that’s satisfying.”
Pitching problems
The biggest area of struggle was on the mound, where the Blue Jays simply don’t have enough depth or health. Several pitchers have endured Tommy John surgeries and that includes top prospect Ricky Tiedemann and Chad Dallas, both of whom opened the year in Buffalo’s rotation.
Incredibly, Herd starters were credited with only 12 victories the entire season, posting a 12-42 record and 5.32 ERA as the trend of tight pitch counts and lack of innings continues to be a tenet of the Blue Jays organization. For some perspective, the Bisons have had 11 pitchers win 13 or more games in a season on their own in their modern era.
The Blue Jays’ struggling player development program needs a reset, and a big move happened earlier this month when minor league pitching coordinator Cory Popham was let go after six seasons. There’s no doubt that the washout of a season from Tiedemann (6.00 ERA, 12 walks in just nine innings) hastened his demise.
“I would assume they’re thinking about (pitching philosophy) and we’ll see what they’re going to do,” Candaele said. “We probably needed a little bit more depth in the starting pitching area but I’m sure that’s going to be taken care of.”
Awards stand
The team’s most valuable player was outfielder Alan Roden, who batted .314 in 71 games after his promotion from Double-A New Hampshire and was the IL Player of the Month for August. The most valuable pitcher was Andrew Bash, who went 4-0, 2.91 in 28 games (16 starts) and struck out 77 in 80⅓ innings.
The Hometown Hero was reliever Luis Quinones, who went 7-0, 3.28 in Sahlen Field en route to an 11-0 season that’s the best in franchise history in terms of both winning percentage and consecutive wins. Relievers Brandon Eisert (Most Inspirational), Paxton Schultz (Comeback Player) and Hayden Juenger (Community Service) were also honored.
The Bisons Booster Club’s awards announced over the weekend went to Robertson (Favorite Player), Quinones (Favorite Pitcher) and Palmegiani (Unsung Hero).
Catcher Payton Henry probably would have been the comeback player had the team known he was returning the final week, and it was an uplifting return. Henry, who suffered a concussion and temporary hearing loss when drilled in the head by a hitter’s backswing during a scary incident May 31 in Syracuse, hit safely in all three games he played. He went 3 for 4 Sunday with an RBI double in the first.
“It was great for him to come back from what he came from and be healthy, end up playing in three games and coming back strong,” Candaele said.
Up next
The Bisons begin the 2025 season on Friday, March 28 at home against Rochester. Candaele said he’s hoping to return for a fifth season, which would be a first in Buffalo’s modern era.
“I love it here. I’ve always enjoyed it,” Candaele said. “I loved it when I played (from 1995-97) and it’s become like a second home. I could do away with April and May weather but I know you have to be tough to live in Buffalo. We’ll see what happens and what they have planned.”

It feels like forever since I've taken pics at the ballgame. Best part of tonight? $2 hot dogs, babyyyyyy.
It was a double-header, so I left work and headed straight to the stadium and made it in time for game 1.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders were playing the Worcester Red Sox. I shot a few innings and then got a hot dog to go. Railriders won the first game, and the Sox got the 2nd.
Lucky for me, kinda-ish, I'm a Sox and Yanks fan.
