Phoenix Suns Trade Three Players to Golden State Warriors for Vinny Del Negro
On January 26th, 2001, the Phoenix Suns traded forwards Corie Blount and Rubén Garcés and guard Paul McPherson to the Golden State Warriors for guard Vinny Del Negro.
The Golden State Warriors added guard Vinny Del Negro in a three-team trade with the Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers. A 12-year veteran, Del Negro struggled in 29 games with the Warriors, shooting just 33.3% from the field and producing 2.7 PPG, 1.1 RPG and 2.1 APG in 13.7 MPG.
The Warriors began the season 1-7 and never really righted the ship. The team was 14-28 after 42 games. Del Negro was dealing with bone spurs in his ankle but with the Warriors in the cellar of the NBA standings, the team decided to move on from the veteran guard.
Corie Blount joined the Phoenix Suns in the 1999 offseason when he passed on a few offers from other teams and signed a two-year, $2.3 million deal with a player option of $1.2 million in the final year.
The 1999-00 Suns brought intrigue to the NBA. The team acquired guard Penny Hardaway from the Orlando Magic in a sign-and-trade and drafted forward Shawn Marion in the first round of the 1999 NBA Draft. With a nucleus that already included Jason Kidd, Clifford Robinson and Rodney Rogers, the Suns had a legitimate case as contenders.
The Suns were one of the better teams in the NBA, beginning the 1999-00 season 13-7 after 20 games. In that time, head coach Danny Ainge resigned from the position to spend more time with his family.
Assistant coach Scott Skiles replaced Ainge and not much changed. The Suns won their next four games and continued to perform well. Phoenix was 53-29 record, good for a tie for fourth best in the Western Conference.
Blount missed the first two months of the season as he recuperated from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. Blount reserve after returning in January. He appeared n 38 contests (one start) and contributed 2.8 PPG and 3.0 RPG in 11.7 MPG.
Phoenix was tied with the San Antonio Spurs for fourth, but lost the tiebreaker because the Spurs had a better record against teams in the West. That meant the Spurs would have homecourt advantage in a first round matchup between both teams.
Both Phoenix and San Antonio had stars out during the first round. Jason Kidd was out with a broken right ankle and Spurs forward Tim Duncan was out indefinitely with torn cartilage in his left knee.
The series started with a low-scoring 72-70 win for Phoenix. Blount hit three clutch free-throws in the win and Rodney Rogers stole an inbounds pass to seal the game. Spurs center David Robinson had 25 points and 15 rebounds in the second game as San Antonio evened the series with an 85-70 victory.
In Phoenix, the Spurs took a ten-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Suns outscored the Spurs 32-15 in the fourth quarter to take a 2-1 series lead. Kidd returned from his ankle injury in Game Four and Hardaway had 23 points and seven rebounds as the Suns won the series 3-1 with an 89-78 victory. Blount had a big role in Phoenix's first round win, averaging 7.0 PPG on 57.9% from the field, 6.5 RPG, 1.3 SPG and 1.5 BPG in 21.7 MPG.
Phoenix matched up with the 67-15 Los Angeles Lakers in the next round. Lakers star Shaquille O'Neal led the way with 37 points and 14 rebounds as Los Angeles routed Phoenix 105-77 in Game One. Game Two was closer. After a Hardaway layup with 46 seconds left gave Phoenix a 96-94 lead, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant made one of two free-throws with 43 seconds remaining.
After Hardaway missed a jumper, Bryant nailed a game-winning pull-up from Bryant with 2.6 seconds remaining. Hardaway missed a heavily contested runner at the buzzer as Los Angeles won 97-96. Game Three was also close. Phoenix had a lead going into the fourth quarter at home. The Lakers gained control late and 9-of-12 free-throws in the final one minute and 34 seconds to win 105-99 and took a 3-0 series lead.
Facing a sweep, Phoenix led by 23 at halftime of Game Four and never relinquished a lead and won 117-98. Los Angeles closed out the series with an 87-65 victory in Game Five. Blount played in five games with Phoenix and amassed 3.2 PPG and 6.0 RPG in 15.0 MPG.
After Phoenixâs second round series loss, Blount's larger role in the playoffs led him to opt out of his contract. He received offers from other teams, but decided to sign a two-year deal worth $3.2 million with a player option for the 2001-02 season. The Suns also signed guard Tony Delk.
In the offseason, Phoenix made some smaller deals signing forward Rubén Garcés and guard Paul McPherson as training camp invites. Garcés previously played in the Continental Basketball Association and McPherson was an undrafted rookie.
A 6-foot-4 guard from DePaul, McPherson averaged 11.2 PPG and 4.6 RPG as a junior at DePaul. McPherson's performance in Summer League at the Rocky Mountain Revue with Phoenix led to his invite. The guard managed 18.7 PPG and led all Summer League players in field goal percentage (61.9%).
The Suns suffered some bad news when guard Penny Hardaway was out for the beginning of the 2000-01 season. Hardaway had what was believed as a simple arthroscopic left knee surgery but it was eventually revealed that he had microfracture surgery. Hardaway later went through a second arthroscopic surgery on his knee in late November.Â
Even without Hardaway, the Suns were still good. Marion stepped up in his second year. After dropping its first game, the Suns won 10 of the next 12 to rise to 10-3. Phoenix continued to play quality basketball into 2001.
In January, Hardaway returned for four games before being shutdown for the rest of the season. Looking for proven backcourt help, the Suns made the decision to trade for a veteran guard in Del Negro to add depth while dealing three bit players who were mainly on the bench. The team was 24-16 when it made the trade.
Blount had a minor role in his second season with Phoenix. The forward played in 30 games (six starts) and was producing 1.8 PPG, and 2.8 RPG in 12.9 MPG.
Garcés barely played with Phoenix in his first NBA season. The 6-foot-9 forward saw action in 10 games, managing 1.6 PPG and 2.2 RPG in 6.2 MPG. McPherson showed some flashes of ability such as a 9-for-10, 20-point game in a win against the Toronto Raptors, but was relatively quiet.
The guard appeared in 33 games and recorded 3.4 PPG, 1.5 RPG and 0.5 APG in 9.3 MPG. Blount ended his time in Phoenix with a stat line of 2.4 PPG and 2.9 RPG in 68 contests. He shot 49% from the field and 56% from the free-throw line in that time.
The NBA didn't allow veterans on one-year contracts to be traded. To make the deal work, Blount waived his player option, making the second year guaranteed and the trade legal.
The Warriors released forward Chucky Brown from his 10-day contract to make room on the roster for the three players acquired in the deal.
After the trade, Del Negro was a bench option for Phoenix. The Suns had the second best defense in the NBA. They finished with the sixth-best record in the Western Conference at 51-31. Del Negro participated in 36 games with Phoenix, compiling 4.9 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 1.8 APG and 0.6 SPG in 14.6 MPG.
In the playoffs, the Suns went on to a matchup with the third seed Sacramento Kings. In the series opener, Jason Kidd had 18 points and 14 assists and the Suns held on for an 86-83 win in Sacramento after Kings guard Jason Williams missed a potential game-tying three-pointer.
The Kings led by 32 points in the third quarter and won easily 116-90. In Game Three, Phoenix jumped out to an early 17-point lead in the first quarter. Sacramento quickly erased the deficit and took a lead in the third quarter. The Kings outscored Phoenix 14-6 in the final three minutes to win 104-96.
Sacramento closed out the series in Game Four with a 30-19 fourth quarter score and 89-82 final score. Kings forward Peja StojakoviÄ had 37 points as Sacramento eliminated Phoenix. Del Negro played in the first three games of the series but was out of the rotation in the finale. The guard averaged 2.7 PPG on 57.1% shooting, 0.7 RPG and 1.7 APG in 8.6 MPG.
After Phoenix's loss, the Suns shook up the roster, dealing Kidd to the New Jersey Nets for Stephon Marbury. The Suns also traded starter Clifford Robinson to the Detroit Pistons.
Del Negro was on Phoenix's roster for the 2001-02 season but was traded nine games into the season to the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team deal that brought Bo Outlaw to the Suns. Del Negro had scored two points in two games with Phoenix.
Del Negro ended his stint in Phoenix with 4.7 PPG, 1.3 RPG, 1.7 APG and 0.5 SPG in 38 games. The Suns guard shot 52% from the field and 89% from the free-throw line.
The Warriors went 3-37 after the trade to finish up the 2000-01 season 17-65. Rubén Garcés was waived by the Warriors nearly a month after the trade. He played in three games with Golden State, going scoreless in seven minutes while pulling down seven rebounds.
Blount was given a significant amount of minutes and responded well. The 6-foot-9 power forward saw the most playing time of his career (24.2 MPG) and rebounded the ball at the highest rate of his career. Blount had a rebound rate of 18.2% and averaged a career-high 8.3 RPG in 38 games. Blount also posted 6.8 PPG, 1.3 APG and 0.8 SPG.
McPherson saw a slight uptick in playing time, but still had a background role for the struggling Warriors. The guard appeared in 22 games with Golden State, tallying 6.8 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 1.0 APG and 0.6 SPG in 13.0 MPG.
After the season, McPherson became a free agent and signed a contract with the Denver Nuggets, though he was eventually cut in 2001 training camp.
Blount was on the Warriors heading into the 2001-02 season, but was traded shortly before its inception to the Philadelphia 76ers in a three-team, seven-player deal also involving the Charlotte Hornets.
Vinny Del Negro on how the trade had been in the cards for some time (via Arizona Republic):
"It just didn't work out. I thought I would have been here [in Phoenix] last summer. Golden State talked about it. Finally, it got done. I'm just happy I'm here now. Golden State was going in a different direction with an emphasis on youth. I needed to be on a winning team, which I have been all my life."
Corie Blount on how he was happy to leave Phoenix (via Arizona Republic):
"I'm glad I'm out of there, to be honest. We're not winning as many games, but at least I have a good feeling about being here. There's a lot less stress. I don't think guys over there (in the Phoenix locker room) have a good feeling about being there anymore. It takes a toll. Those guys over there are tight, I guarantee you. And it carries over, I don't care what anybody says."
On coach Scott Skiles:
"I don't have to worry about his (expletive) anymore. That's the major thing. This is a hundred times better (at Golden State)."
Paul McPherson on the trade (via Arizona Republic):
"I know you can't come out and disrespect anybody like that, but Vinny Del Negro has maybe two or three years left in the league, tops. I guess that's the decision they thought was best. I just got to come back and take it out on them. "They felt like Del Negro was a better player than me, and there's nothing I can do about that except prove them wrong. I didn't feel like I had a chance to show what I can do on a consistent basis, and then you get judged on that. I didn't understand the trade or the way it went down."
Feeling bitter about the trade:
"I thought I was a member of a family there. And then to get traded like that and not even hear about it from coach Skiles first. He told me later, 'I know you know what's going on, so we just have to be professional and move on.' "I really didn't appreciate the way it was done. I didn't think I was given a fair shake. I was bitter, and I'm still bitter now."
Golden State Warriors assistant general manager Gary Fitzsimmons on the trade (via ESPN):
"They just felt they needed a veteran guard who could play both positions. It was a good situation for Vinny and a good opportunity for us to add depth, and that's why we did it."
On Corie Blount's interest in heading to the Warriors in the deal:
"He's very excited to come here. All of them are excited."
On acquiring McPherson in the deal:
"That was the hardest part of (Phoenix's) part of the deal -- giving him up. They think he can be a player. We think this guy has a significant potential and upside."
Phoenix Suns head coach Scott Skiles on the trade (via Arizona Republic):
"We've made a commitment to our two young big guys (Jake Tsakalldis and Daniel Santiago), and that left Corie out of the loop. Paul, we think, has the potential to be a good player, but because of Penny's injury, we felt like we needed more of a shooter and veteran guy there."
On Corie Blount and Paul McPherson's opinions of him and the trade were relayed to him (via Arizona Republic):
"That's all right. They can think whatever they want. That's fine. When I was traded to Washington from Orlando, I wasn't overly excited about it, that's for sure. But I understood this was a business, and I went."

Les pires décisions de Rob Hennigan
- 3 mars 2018 -
Chris.

Sixers wanting to âkill each otherâ at practice before Game 1 vs. Raptors wasnât a bad thing
Tobias Harris entered the NBA as a teenager in a different era. Orlando Magic Add Litterial Green in Trade with Chicago Bulls
On July 7th, 1992, the Chicago Bulls traded guard Litterial Green to the Orlando Magic for a 1993 second round draft pick (Anthony Reed).
The Chicago Bulls were busy on 1992 draft day, selecting forward Byron Houston with their first round pick. In the second round, the Bulls had three selections. They picked up guards Corey Williams (33), Litterial Green (39) and forward Matt Steigenga (52).
Green had a great college career at the University of Georgia, ascending to the schoolâs all-time scoring and assist marks, while making All-Southeastern Conference selection three times from 1990-1992.
Early in the offseason, the Bulls were overloaded. Drafting Green and Williams left the team with six guards and it wanted to make a trade to even out the roster.Â
General manager Jerry Krause was fascinated by Williamsâ athleticism and opted to keep him over Green.
The Magic had two second round picks in the 1993 NBA Draft, one which was being sent to the Seattle SuperSonics. Orlando sent its own pick in the 1993 draft to the Bulls who were without one for that year.
Green joined the Magic and played on the teamâs Summer League roster. He signed a one-year contract with the Magic.
Orlando was coming into the 1992-93 NBA season with high hopes. The team had recently selected center Shaquille OâNeal first overall. Orlando cleaned up its roster glut at point guard by trading guard Sam Vincent to the Milwaukee Bucks, making Scott Skiles the clear-cut starter at the point.
Orlando began the year 8-3. Thanks to the play of OâNeal (23.4 PPG, 13.9 RPG and 3.5 BPG), Orlando was 41-41. The team missed the postseason after losing a tiebreaker with the Indiana Pacers who had the same record.Â
Green appeared in 52 games (four starts) and amassed 4.5 PPG, 0.7 RPG, 2.2 APG in 12.0 MPG. He shared time with Skiles, Chris Corchiani and mid-season acquisition Steve Kerr.
Orlando won the draft lottery for the second straight year and drafted Chris Webber. The Magic dealt his draft rights to the Golden State Warriors for the draft rights to the number three pick Anfernee âPennyâ Hardaway and three future first round picks.Â
The Magic also made a coaching change, reassigning head coach Matt Guokas to the front office and replacing him with assistant Brian Hill.
Hardaway was another key asset to Orlando, and the team started to have dreams of a playoff appearance. Before the start of the 1993-94 season, Green signed a one-year deal close to $200,000 to stay with the Magic.
The Magic were one of the top teams in the East during the 1993-94 season. A 24-16 start after 40 games was followed by continued solid play. Behind the efforts of OâNeal, Hardaway, Nick Anderson and Dennis Scott, Orlando set a franchise record with a 50-32 record.Â
With Hardaway and Skiles both occupying the point guard spot, there was even less available playing time for Green. The Georgia guard played in 29 games, recording 2.5 PPG and 0.3 APG in 4.3 MPG.
Orlando earned the fourth seed in the East and matched up with the 47-35 Indiana Pacers in the first round. Despite building a double digit lead in the series opener, the Magic lost after Pacers reserve Byron Scott nailed a game-winner with two seconds left.Â
The Pacers won another close game, taking a 2-0 series lead with a 103-101 win. Indiana won the third game comfortably 99-86 victory to take the series in a 3-0 sweep.Â
After the season, the Magic declined to make a qualifying offer to Green, making him an unrestricted free agent. The decision to draft a point guard in the second round of the 1994 NBA Draft (Brooks Thompson) upset Green who said the Magic promised him the opposite. (via Orlando Sentinel):
âI was disappointed in the Magic organization. Iâm not bitter, but I did everything I was asked for two years. I busted my butt and didnât complain. They told me they werenât going to draft another point guard, and then they did. I couldnât believe it.â
The qualifying offer was only a raise of 25% on Greenâs salary. Green spent the 1994-95 season with the Quad City Thunder of the Continental Basketball Association.
The Chicago Bulls used the 1993 draft pick acquired from Orlando on Tulane forward Anthony Reed (selected 41st overall). A two-time First-team All-Metro Conference performer, Reed ended his four-year college career as the schoolâs all-time leading scorer with 1,896 points. (The scoring record has since been passed)
Reed joined the Bullsâ Summer League team for the Rocky Mountain Revue. The Bulls gave him a look in a minicamp, but with a lack of roster space, Reed signed a deal overseas. He never played with the Bulls or in the NBA.Â
Litterial Green on joining the Magic (via Orlando Sentinel):
âIâm elated. My prayers have been answered. This is what I had been keeping my fingers crossed for. By getting me, the Magic can add some speed, quickness and defensive pressure. This is a team I can help.â
How heâs ready to play in Summer camp without a contract:
âI donât need a contract to play in that camp. Iâd play for a dollar if they asked. Before the draft, I did my homework on the Magic. I really felt that of any team in the league, that this is the one I could help. They need speed and quickness.â
Looking back on the trade in 2015 (via Atlanta Journal-Constitution):
âI thought I was going to get a chance to play with Michael (Jordan) but they traded me and I played with Shaq. I was a blue-collar guy in the league and it is bumpy road when you are a backup player in the NBA. The cards were just not in my favor.â
Chicago Bulls general manager Jerry Krause on essentially choosing guard Corey Williams over Litterial Green in training camp by making the trade (via the Chicago Tribune):
âWe have two guys who are alike, and we chose to keep Corey. Weâre very impressed with him.â
How the pick could be good based on Orlandoâs record:
âIt could be a good second.â
Orlando Magic general manager Pat Williams on Green (via Orlando Sentinel):
âWe think he has NBA skills. He has an NBA body. He went later in the draft than we expected. Weâd just like to take a closer look. He definitely has the strength, agility and athletic ability to play in this league.â
On how the trade has no impact on incumbent point guards Sam Vincent, Scott Skiles or Chris Corchiani (via Orlando Sentinel):
âYou shouldn't read anything into this trade. We expect both Scott Skiles and Sam Vincent to be back. We have Corchiani's rights. This just throws another athlete into the mix. We have no other deals coming, nothing else planned. We just wanted to take a look at Litterial.â

Sixers want to âkill each otherâ in action before Game 1 vs. Raptors are not a bad thing.
Tobias Harris entered the NBA at a young age in a different era. A few years later, he remembered that senior coaches at the beginning of his career such as Scott Skiles and Stan Van Gundy conducted two-day training camp activities. âCargo handlingâ is not on the radar. Now nearly 30 years old, the hard work of the Sixers has hit Harris. win-open cup Saturday night against the Raptors. âIt simplyâŠ

Benefits of virtual conferences for ecology and conservation research
Note: This is a guest post by Lauren Kuehne and co-authors of Kuehne et al. 2022. Hot on the heels of Catherine Scottâs excellent post in early February, where she summarized Skiles et al. 2021 on how virtual conferences shifted conference attendance, we want to share a brand new article in Conservation Biology related to the same topic. Dorktown: John Stockton once wouldâve led the NBA in assists even if heâd only played 60 games
NBAE via Getty Images
Sorry for being 29 years late, but there are things to be said about 1991-92 John Stockton
John Stockton and his 15,806 career assists (nearly 4,000 more than runner-up Jason Kidd) is the most accomplished passer of all time. Heâs done things like this:
And this:
I could make a million assist-related charts encapsulating all or large chunks of Stocktonâs career. But Iâd rather not. Iâd rather zoom in on his 1991-92 season. Why that season? Afterall, it wasnât âevenâ one of the three most prolific passing seasons of his career. Well, for starters, check out the assist progression throughout that season of the NBAâs top passers:
There are two inflection points that jump out to me. One is at game 60 â we couldnât have known it at the time, but after the Jazzmanâs 16-assist outing in his 60th game, he couldâve taken the final 22 games off and still have led the league in assists.
The other is up at game 80. At that point Stockton was sitting at 1,082 assists on the season when no one else wound up finishing within 200 of that. Then in game 81, he had 23 assists. Then in game 82, he had 21 assists. Kevin Porter in March of 1975 is the only other NBA player whoâs ever pulled off back-to-back games with more than 20 assists.
As for the 44 total assists in the two games, not only has no one else had that many across back-to-back games in the 37 years since Stockton entered the league, but only 2010-11 Rajon Rondo (41) early in the season and 1990-91 Scott Skiles (43 after recording 13 assists in the game following his single-game record 30) have exceeded 40.
And of course that was just the icing. Those 44 assists in two games came to close out a season in which he was already towering over everyone to the point he only needed to play the first 60 games to be the assist king.
That year Stockton also set what I believe to truly be one of the most unbreakable non-grand-slams-in-an-inning records: 77 games in a season with at least 10 assists. The most anyone else has ever had is 67, but in the last 30 years, no oneâs even had more than 60:
I canât imagine weâll ever again see someone play a full season with no more than five single-digit assist games. Oh by the way, Stockton had either eight or nine assists in four of the five games he didnât have 10:
And remember, this wasnât even one of the greatest assist seasons of his career. Sheesh.

Orlando's Scott Skiles dished off an NBA record 30 assists as the Magic defeated Denver 155-116 at Orlando Arena. Skiles surpassed previous record holder Kevin Porter of New Jersey, who handed out 29 assists in the Nets' 126-112 win over Houston on February 24, 1978. Box Score.
