Is Scot Gemmill the Answer for Scotland?
The Scottish national team got off to a terrible start in Euro 2020 qualifying with a 3-0 loss away from home against Kazakhstan.
A win in the next match over San Marino did not matter as the Scottish Football Association decided to sack Alex McLeish.
Recently I wrote that David Moyes was considered to be the frontrunner to become the next manager of Scotland.
But new reports have surfaced that Scot Gemmill is one of the candidates to take over the Scottish national team.
Online bookmaker 10Bet has the latest manager specials and currently the odds are 11/10 for Scot Gemmill to become the next manager of Scotland.
When you hear the name “Gemmill” you immediately think of legendary Scottish footballer Archie Gemmill and the famous goal he scored against Netherlands at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.
And it comes as no surprise that Scot is the son of Archie.
If Scot Gemmill is hired as manager of Scotland, I definitely know that it will be hard not to reference the film “Trainspotting.”
※ Current Odds Date & Time: April 25, 2:00 a.m. (GMT)
But getting back to the main topic, is Scot Gemmill worthy of becoming the next manager of Scotland?
Of course, I want to refer to his football CV as a manager and not get carried away become of his last name and family influence.
Scot played the bulk of his career with Nottingham Forest from 1990 to 1999 and made twenty-six appearances for the national team of Scotland from 1995 to 2003.
The former midfielder managed Scotland’s U17 team from 2014 to 2016 and is currently the manager of Scotland U21.
It is clear that Scot Gemmill has good experience as a manager at the youth levels, but he has no experience at the club level.
I don’t expect Scotland to hire a foreign manager and I also think Scot Gemmill isn’t the best candidate available.
But I think Scot Gemmill is an upgrade over McLeish and he might be the answer to motivate the current batch of Scottish footballers.

The 6 Scotland wild cards who could gatecrash Steve Clarke‘s Euro 2020 squad
Everyone will be hoping our Kilted Kangaroo Lyndon Dykes is raring to go but if we need another option up top then the former Everton man would make sense. He is similar to the QPR man in that he likes to link the play with his feet as well as providing a target at the top end of the pitch. The 6ft 5in Reims forward is a Scotland U21 stalwart and has netted 10 times for his country under Scot Gemmill's stewardship. Midifielders love playing with him as he specialises in linking the play up. Callum Paterson is a decent auxiliary choice but Hornby offers more as fourth option behind Dykes, Leigh Griffiths and Oli McBurnie. The former Dundee man is rivalling James Tavernier in the defender scoring stakes this season. The 28-year-old is in brilliant form for Alanyaspor after leaving the City of Discovery for his Turkish adventure back in 2019. The former Liverpool man is a cultured player who Brendan Rodgers waxed lyrical about when they worked together at Swansea. As talented as Caulker is, there's an argument Clarke's dogged defensive system is more important than the players who occupy his back three. That's not to dismiss the likes of Declan Gallagher, however, who has been brilliant since making his debut. The 'Prince Who Was Promised' was a mythical legend who was predicted to save the world in George RR Martin's Game of Thrones series but Scotland don't need that from the Chelsea kid anymore. The 23-year wait for a tournament has allowed for some breathing space. The 19-year-old is on the way back after a serious knee injury but Scotland don't need to rush him into the senior set-up. But Frank Lampard's prized pupil's incredible talent may prove too much to ignore in the coming months. Roy Keane and a host of pundits waxed lyrical about his displays against Liverpool and Everton last season and that feels very much like only the beginning. If he becomes a Chelsea regular then he may well make the cut.The former Southampton man is turning heads with Aston Villa but the 25-year-old's major problem is Scotland don't need a left-back. The versatile defender has two caps at U19 level before switching his allegiances to England but his Three Lions call of duty hasn't extended beyond U21 level. Andy Robertson is entrenched as starter at left wing-back with Kieran Tierney ready to deputise as he enjoys playing as part of a back three. But with no disrepect to the likes of Andrew Considine, Barry Douglas or Aaron Hickey - Targett has real experience in the English Premier League. A name to watch but still an outsider. The free-scoring Aberdeen midfielder would love nothing more than to follow uncle Barry and star for his country. Anyone you speak to raves about Ferguson's work ethic and desire to get better every day, The 21-year-old is already one of the best players in the Premiership and appears primed to become a senior star for years to come. But a starting trio of Callum McGregor, Ryan Jack and John McGinn will be hard to dislodge. But if anyone will force their way in then it will be this man. There's Tartan Army diehards who would make a case that you should never ask a player twice to represent Scotland. Alex McLeish revealed the Southampton striker politely declined a formal invitation to represent the Dark Blues. Listen, there would obviously be an element of Scotland becoming more appealing by reaching a major tournament but Adams is a serious operator who has scored three goals in his last four games for the high-flying Saints. It may well be a case that Adams' chance to represent Scotland is gone but it would be remiss to hold it against Clarke or the player himself if he was asked again.

Defender Grant Hanley to Miss Scotland's final two Euro Cup 2020 qualifiers
Grant Hanley will miss Scotland's final two Euro Cup 2020 qualifiers in November after surgery. The English Premier League club expects Hanley 27, to be out for seven to eight weeks after a groin operation.
The 29-times capped center-back has been sidelined since suffering the injury in late August and has missed Scotland's entire qualifying campaign. Steve Clarke's sideways Cyprus on days of arrival Scotland can no longer play with a semi-final play-off in March. Teenage Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour says it would be a dream come true to play for the senior Scotland national team. Gilmour, 18, made his debut for the English Premier League side in August and is training with the first team. He has appeared 11 times for Scot Gemmill Scotland Under-21 side and is eager to make the step up.
"I'm still young and I need to keep working hard," he told BBC Scotland.
"At Chelsea, I'm training with the first team and I've made a couple of appearances, so it can only get better if I keep going the way I've been."
Gilmour, who left Rangers for Chelsea in July 2017, has also represented Scotland at under-17 and under-19 level. He signed his first contract with the United States in the first league against Frank Lampard.
"The night before, the gaffer kept asking if my family was coming down and saying make sure they come," Gilmour said.
"We were 2-0 up and I'm thinking 'this could be a good goal when it was 2-1 when I came on.
"It finished 2-2, which was not the result I hoped for, but it made my dream come true in the Premier League."
Gilmour is now ready for you. However, given the players he is competing with at Chelsea he appreciates those minutes may come elsewhere.
"I need to play more first-team games, at Chelsea or maybe out on loan," he added. "I need to get more experience."

Allan Campbell all grown up as Scotland U21 Euro campaign continues
AT the age of just 21, Alan Campbell may still be a youngster in many people’s eyes but he is not, he insists, a “little boy” anymore.
With 17 under-21 caps to his name, Campbell is one of the more seasoned campaigners in Scot Gemmill’s Scotland squad which will take on Lithuania on Thursday evening before facing the Czech Republic on Monday in vital European Under-21 Championship qualifiers. And the experience the midfielder has gained as a first team regular at Motherwell means he is not scared of making his feelings known on the park, regardless of who is next to him.
“I’m quite quiet off the park but I’ve very vocal on the park,” he said.
“I like to be a leader on the park. When you’re younger you can’t be placed into the first team environment and be a little boy. You have to stand up and be counted. If someone is not doing their job you need to be able tell them.
READ MORE: Liam Palmer: Flip flops ban shows new standards in Scotland camp that can help us reach Euro 2020
“They are not going to shout back because it’s a team game and you have to be doing your job. You cannot be shy.”
Gemmill’s squad are in good form having taken maximum points from their opening two games with victories over San Marino and Croatia. There is still, though, a long way to go before a place at the finals can be confirmed and Campbell is quick to quell any mention of qualification just yet.
“Reaching the finals would be an incredible achievement but I think we are just focusing on starting the campaign well, which we have done with two great results,” he said.
“Now we need to keep going. But I’m sure we will be set up and organised and carry out the manager’s game plan. I think you have to take each game as it comes.”
Campbell’s reputation has grown immeasurably in recent months and he admits that while playing for the under-21s is a great honour, winning a full international cap is what he has his sights on.
“It is my dream to play for Scotland. It means a lot to get called into the 21s but the next step would make me even prouder,” he said.
“As a young boy you always want to represent your country. I would love to gain that first full international cap. Hopefully I get the chance to make that dream come true.”
Motherwell has made a name for itself as a team which nurtures young talent from their early days right through until they make a breakthrough into the international set-up.
Campbell’s club has produced a number of great international players, with James McFadden one who made a significant mark in a Scotland shirt and the midfielder admits that being in such close contact with the Motherwell legend has helped his career significantly.
READ MORE: David Weir: ‘It’s too long since Rangers won a serious, real trophy’
“Faddy was a great inspiration to me at Motherwell as he came back and played for a few years and he was the assistant manager at the club.
“He helped me make that transition into the first team and he was great for me. Faddy saw something in me and he knew that I always tried to be myself
“I was lucky he guided me during my career and he is a brilliant guy. Faddy always told me to go out and express myself on the park and don’t be scared and just be confident and show people how good you are.”
And Campbell is hopeful that just as he watched the likes of McFadden progress through the ranks, the young Motherwell players with take inspiration from him and his peers.
“A lot of young boys can also see the likes of myself, David Turnbull, Barry Maguire and Chris Cadden in the Motherwell first team and getting into the Scotland under 21 side and making an impact after coming through the academy.”

Scotland appoint Clarke as a manager, ahead of rivalry with Belgium
The Scottish Football Association have selected Steve Clarke as Scotland's new manager on a three years contract.
Clarke, 55, leaves Kilmarnock after a successful time of two years at Rugby Park where he headed the Ayrshire club to third place in the Scottish Premiership, the club's highest league finish since 1966 with a record points, total 67 points.
He was named the PFA Scotland and Scottish Football Writers' Association Manager of the Year for his work at Kilmarnock.
Scotland, who are seeking in fifth place after two matches in the European Championship qualifiers, are watching to end their 22 years wait to reach the finals of a major tournament like Euro 2020. Sports enthusiasts from around the world can purchase Belgium Euro Cup Tickets online to the witness live performance of Euro Cup 2020.
Scotland faces Belgium and Cyprus in their next Euro 2020 qualifiers as Clarke bids to lead the national side to first major finals since the 1998 World Cup in France.
"It is an honour to be appointed Scotland National Head Coach and I will undertake those responsibilities with pride and commitment," former St Mirren and defender Clarke said, who got six caps for Scotland between 1987 and 1994.
“I firmly believe we have a talented group of players who can achieve success on the international stage. I look forward to working with them and helping them to fulfill those ambitions.
"I appreciate the Scotland supporters have waited a long time for the national team to qualify for a major tournament. Now we have a Women’s World Cup to look onward to in France this summer and it’s my inspiration to follow the success of Shelley Kerr and her squad by leading us to EURO 2020."
He believes that Scotland team can qualify and look onward to that journey with the players and the fans, starting against Belgium and Cyprus.”
Clarke had been advertised for the vacant position along with Aberdeen's Derek McInnes and Scotland under-21 head coach Scot Gemmill.
In a speech to fans at Rugby Park after Kilmarnock conquered Rangers 2-1 to finish third in the standings and protected a European League spot, Clarke appeared to drop a hint about his next performance as McLeish's successor.

Can Clarke Change the Fortunes for Scotland?
It is official: Steve Clarke is the new manager of the national team of Scotland. I must say that he isn’t in the most ideal situation, but it could be worse.
For some reason, I have the feeling that many Scottish football supporters will be blaming Alex McLeish if the Scots barely miss out on an automatic qualifying spot to Euro 2020.
But anyway, I have a habit of rambling a bit here and there. In a blog written previously about the same topic, my choice for manager was Scot Gemmill.
But Steve Clarke did great things this past season as he led Kilmarnock to a third-place finish in the top-flight of Scottish football.
I also find it comforting that one of my Scottish friends is happy with the hire because he feels that Scotland finally hired a “real coach”.
There is plenty of talent available on the Scottish national team and I thin Steve Clarke can bring out the best of the Scottish footballers that are ready to fight hard for their supporters.
The first test for Clarke will take place on 8 June against Cyprus at Hampden Park and online bookmaker 10Bet has the latest odds.
※ Current Odds Date & Time: May 21, 5:00 a.m. (GMT)
Scotland currently is favored with 10/21 odds while Cyprus has 9/2 odds.
The fact of the matter is that Cyprus is not going to be an easy opponent. But on paper, everyone knows that Scotland is the better team.
We all know that Steve Clarke must pick the best players available when it is time to submit the 23-man roster.
It is easy to talk about what Scotland must do in order to defeat Cyprus at Hampden.
But aside from the obvious keys to winning the match, I feel that it will be most important for Clarke to make his players believe in one another.
There cannot be any doubts and there cannot be any looking back on poor results.
This is the time for Scottish footballers to believe in Clarke and give their fans a reason to believe that tournament football can become a reality once again.
Prediction: Scotland 2-0 Cyprus
