My mission is twofold: to showcase the beauty and resilience of these organic travelers and to curate a seed collection that becomes a symbol of nature's ingenious ways. Through this collection, I aim to inspire future generations to explore and celebrate the wonders hidden within the seemingly ordinary. The overarching idea is to motivate artists to generate new and thought-provoking concepts, highlighting how these materials can transcend their natural beauty and be transformed into unique substances capable of evoking powerful reactions among emerging artists.

25th August 1822, death of German-born British astronomer and composer William Herschel, brother of fellow astronomer Caroline Herschel. William Herschel is credited with the discovery of Uranus in 1781, (English astronomer John Flamsteed had observed the same planet in 1690, but thought it was a star). Herschel would further discover the moons of Uranus, Titania and Oberon, and the moons of Saturn Enceladus (on the 28th August 1789) and Mimas. As well as these discoveries, Herschel would also invent infrared radiation, and publish catalogues of nebulae. In 1778, William Herschel believing that life existed on other planets, wrote that he had observed lunar towns, which is especially ironic for the history that follows. 25th August 1835, the New York Sun newspaper publishes the sensational and startling discovery of people and animals living on the moon using "an immense telescope of an entirely new principle", by English polymath, mathematician, astronomer John Herschel, son of astronomer William Herschel. The reports describe a fantastic array of life on the moon including unicorns, beavers that walked on two legs, and bat like winged humanoids that had been named "Vespertilio-homo". The articles now known as the ‘Great Moon Hoax’, first published on this day were written by Richard Adams Locke in order to increase the New York Sun’s circulation. 26th August 1723, death of Dutch microscopist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, known as “the Father of Microbiology", for his foundation of the science, being the first to observe bacteria and protozoa in pond water. “A piece of craft that makes the world a better place. What is it and why do you think it is important?” (semester 1)
Tumblr media
During our first lecture of this year, the class was asked to write about a piece of craft that could be seen to make the world a better place. A piece of craft I feel could make the world a better place is “Mushtari”, part of the “Wanderer collection”, by Neri Oxman in collaboration with Christoph Bader and Dominik Kolb. The piece is made up of 58 meters of 3D printed channels, injected with an unspecified fluid, that converts sunlight into useful products for the wearer – for example, scents, drugs, food, pigments or fuel. Two known components of the fluid’s makeup are organisms, a Photosynthetic microbe – microalgae or cyanobacteria- and a compatible microbe – baker’s years or E. coli. The photosynthetic microbe uses sunlight to create sucrose – sugar- that is then absorbed by the compatible microbes to create the materials needed, this ideally would be chosen by the wearer so that a particular substance is created (Eric Oh 2015).
“Mushtari” was originally designed with the idea that the piece could adapt to any condition (Neri Oxman, 2018), an example being space; somewhere barren and – as far as we know- unable to sustain life. This piece – and collection- is important as it not only furthers human exploration throughout space and other unexplored depths but could also be adapted to help those who suffer from diseases, allergies and disorders. Making the piece a little more wearable for the everyday could mean someone who needed to take medication to live their day to day life – or allergy medication – could be carried around on the wearers wrist, the sunlight would generate the correct dose for the wearer’s need, which they could then trigger and take without having to carry tablets, epi-pens or pillboxes.
