Dreaming of a Cure: Heman Bekele Is TIME’s 2024 Kid of the Year

Heman Bekele whipped up the most dangerous of what he called his “potions” when he was just over 7 years old. He’d been conducting his own science experiments for about three years by that point, mixing up whatever he could get his hands on at home and waiting to see if the resulting goo would turn into anything.
“They were just dish soap, laundry detergent, and common household chemicals, he says today of the ingredients he’d use. “I would hide them under my bed and see what would happen if I left them overnight. There was a lot of mixing together completely at random.”
But soon, things got less random. For Christmas before his 7th birthday, Heman was given a chemistry set that came with a sample of sodium hydroxide. By then, he had been looking up chemical reactions online and learned that aluminum and sodium hydroxide can together produce prodigious amounts of heat. That got him thinking that perhaps he could do the world some good. “I thought that this could be a solution to energy, to making an unlimited supply,” he says. “But I almost started a fire.”
After that, his parents kept a closer eye on him. As it turned out, having adults watching what he does is something that Heman, now 15, would have to get used to. These days, a whole lot of people are paying him a whole lot of attention. Last October, the 3M company and Discovery Education selected Heman, a rising 10th-grader at Woodson High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, as the winner of its Young Scientist Challenge. His prize: $25,000. His accomplishment: inventing a soap that could one day treat and even prevent multiple forms of skin cancer. It may take years before such a product comes to market, but this summer Heman is already spending part of every weekday working in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, hoping to bring his dream to fruition. When school is in session, he’ll be there less often, but will continue to plug away. “I’m really passionate about skin-cancer research,” he says, “whether it’s my own research or what’s happening in the field. It’s absolutely incredible to think that one day my bar of soap will be able to make a direct impact on somebody else’s life. That’s the reason I started this all in the first place.”
It’s that ambition—to say nothing of that selflessness—that has earned Heman recognition as TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024.
Born in Addis Ababa before emigrating to the U.S. with his family when he was 4, Heman recalls that some of his earliest memories were of seeing laborers working in the blistering sun, usually with no protection for their skin. His parents taught him and his sisters—Hasset, now 16, and Liya, now 7—to cover up, and explained the dangers of too much time outdoors without sunscreen or proper clothing.
“When I was younger, I didn’t think much of it, but when I came to America, I realized what a big problem the sun and ultraviolet radiation is when you’re exposed to it for a long time,” Heman says.
It didn’t take too long for him to start thinking about how he might help. A few years ago, he read about imiquimod, a drug that, among other uses, is approved to fight one form of skin cancer and has shown promise against several more. Typically, imiquimod, which can help destroy tumors and usually comes in the form of a cream, is prescribed as a front-line drug as part of a broader cancer treatment plan, but Heman wondered if it could be made available more easily to people in the earliest stages of the disease. A bar of soap, he reckoned, might be just the delivery system for such a lifesaving drug, not just because it was simple, but because it would be a lot more affordable than the $40,000 it typically costs for skin-cancer treatment.
“What is one thing that is an internationally impactful idea, something that everyone can use, [regardless of] socioeconomic class?” Heman recalls thinking. “Almost everyone uses soap and water for cleaning. So soap would probably be the best option.”
There was a long way to go between inspiration and application, however. Executing on his idea was more complicated than simply mixing the drug into an ordinary bar of soap, since any therapeutic power the imiquimod might confer would just be washed down the drain with the suds. The answer was to combine the soap with a lipid-based nanoparticle that would linger on the skin when the soap was washed away—much the way moisturizer or fragrance can stay behind after the suds are rinsed off.
There was only so much brainstorming Heman could do on his own, however. Then, in 2023, he came across the 3M challenge and submitted a video explaining his idea. Soon, he received an invite to the company’s HQ in St. Paul, Minn., to deliver a pitch in front of a panel of judges. Before that day was out, he’d been named the winner. The $25,000 prize, he knew, would go a long way toward helping him afford to pursue his research, but he’d still need a professional lab in which to conduct the work. That opportunity arrived in February, when he attended a networking event hosted by the Melanoma Research Alliance, in Washington, D.C. There, he met Vito Rebecca, a molecular biologist and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
“I remember reading somewhere something about this young kid who had an idea for a skin-cancer soap,” says Rebecca. “It immediately piqued my interest, because I thought, how cool, him wanting to make it accessible to the whole world. And then, by complete serendipity at this Melanoma Research Alliance meeting, the CEO of the alliance introduced me to Heman. From the first conversation, his passion was evident. When I found out he lived very nearby in Virginia, I told him if he ever wanted to stop by the lab he’d be more than welcome.”
Heman took him up on that idea, and Rebecca agreed to sponsor Heman, acting as his principal investigator and inviting him to work at the Baltimore lab, toggling between benchwork and schoolwork back in Fairfax.

For close to half a year now, Heman and Rebecca have been running basic research on mice, injecting the animals with strains of skin cancer and preparing to apply the lipid-bound, imiquimod-infused soap and see what the results are. And though they’re getting ready to test it and a control against melanoma, Heman knows “there’s still a long way to go”—not just testing the soap, but also patenting it and getting FDA certification, which can take a decade altogether.
It is a measure of Heman’s enormous head start that when that decade passes, he will still be only 25 years old—the age at which medical students have not even completed their postgrad education. He’s making good use of that time. In addition to working on his idea, he’s promoting it. In June, he delivered a presentation before 8,000 people at Boston’s Tsongas Center, during a meeting of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. “That was nerve-racking,” he says, “but it was fun.”
Heman has fun in more conventional ways too. He’s part of the Woodson High School marching band, on both flute and trombone. He plays basketball, reads voraciously (especially fantasy, though he recently reread The Great Gatsby, which he describes as “a pretty good read”), and considers chess “a turn-my-brain-off-and-play kind of thing.”
He credits his family, particularly his parents, for setting the stage for his achievements. His mother Muluemebet is a teacher; his father Wondwossen is a human-resources specialist for the U.S. Agency for International Development. The example of their sacrifice, coming to an unfamiliar country in service of their children’s education, has imbued him with a love of learning and a commitment to pursuing the improbable—or even the seemingly impossible. Nor are his parents and Rebecca the only adults stewarding him on his long scientific journey. He is also aided by Deborah Isabelle, his mentor from 3M.
“I got really lucky,” says Isabelle. “Last year was my first year participating as a mentor in the Young Scientist Challenge, and I was paired with Heman. He’s an incredible, passionate, very inspiring young man.”
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t make mistakes—and Isabelle, for one, has been there to catch him when he falls.
“At one point when he was making the soap, things didn’t work the way he expected,” she says. “So I asked him, What didn’t work? What did you do? And we talked about it, and he’s like, ‘Wow, I didn’t exactly follow the directions.’ And so we had a conversation about that, and he was able to go up and figure out some things, and say, ‘OK, this is what I learned from that.’”
That kind of trial and error will, Heman hopes, take him to the day that his health-giving soap can at last be used in early-stage cancers—including so-called cancer Stage 0, when there is just a small growth that has not yet had much effect on the surface of the skin—and then in later stages, when it would be an adjunct to other treatments.
For all of this, Heman remains humble about what he’s accomplished in just 15 years. “Anybody could do what I did,” he says. “I just came up with an idea. I worked towards that idea, and I was able to bring it to life.” But he confesses that he worries too: scientific breakthroughs seem to be coming faster and faster—in medicine, in engineering, in artificial intelligence—and he frets that people may have reached something of a saturation point.
“A lot of people have this mindset that everything’s been done, there’s nothing left for me to do,” he says. “To anybody having that thought, [I’d say] we’ll never run out of ideas in this world. Just keep inventing. Keep thinking of new ways to improve our world and keep making it a better place.”

Inspiration boards for my OC, Fanny Merifeather.
Name: Fanny Merrifeather
Maiden name: Fanny Lovett
1st husband: Archie Fairfax. Fanny was young, impressionable, and was caught in an arranged marriage with an older bird. His death was a complete accident when Fanny was defending herself from him. But this taught Fanny that she wasn't as helpless as she previously thought.
2nd husband: Professor Gideon Forrest. He was a science professor who specialized in chemistry concoctions. Fanny fell for him when she had decided to attend a class of his. Through his library, Fanny learned about poisons. After catching him with another woman, Fanny used his own knowledge against him and framed it to look as though he had perished by accident when experimenting with his potions.
3rd husband: Richard Farrington the 4th. Fanny was starting to run low on funds, so she married this rich a-hole. He was super into Spiritualism, which Fanny did find intriguing. He was very pretty, but also full of himself. Must have come as a surprise to him when he died. Found drowned, poor thing.
4th husband: Cecil Merrifeather. He was actually a good guy and Fanny legit loved him. He was rich, but kind and very charitable. His death wasn't caused by Fanny, but she was suspected after he was found mauled to death by a wildcat, simply because she had a not so good track record of husbands. She was found not guilty, but there may be some inlaws who hold grudges against her for false beliefs they have as to the circumstances surrounding Cecil's death. (he may have also sacrified himself to save her, which lives rent free in her head)
Fifth husband: Sir Edwin Maplewood the second. An elderly gentleman with lots of money. Fanny only married him in hopes that he would die of old age soon, as his health wasn't the best. Offing him would look suspicious after the other 4 husbands, after all. He perished, however, when their house was caught in the fire. Fanny immediately went back to using her previous name.

A preparatory school for younger boys is held at Gilling Castle, three miles from Ampleforth, to prepare boys for entrance to Ampleforth College at the age of twelve. Here we see young boys in their school uniform in the playroom at Gilling Castle, the ancestral home of the Fairfaxes, a well-known Catholic family.
A wide view of the college hall at Ampleforth, taken from above, showing boys at work on private study. Just visible under the large window at the far end of the hall is the monitor, who acts as a supervisor. According to the original caption "The boys themselves, under the monitorial system, largely run the school. The Fathers interfere as little as possible".
During a Science lesson at Ampleforth college, boys in the middle section of the school are gathered round a bench in the Chemistry laboratory to watch a demonstration by one of the Fathers. The apparatus is set up for an experiment in oxydisation.
Boys at Ampleforth College buy sweets and chocolate from the school tuck shop. The tuck shop is run supervised by boys from the upper school, who are seen here on the right. A customer from the lower school buys some bars of cream tablet, as the older boys collect the money and mark off the ration coupons.
Boys in their final year at Ampleforth College study in the extensive library, as the winter sun streams in through the large windows. A large tapestry can be seen on the wall in the background.
Boys in the final year at Ampleforth College engage in some private study in the extensive and ornate library. Books are arranged by subject and the carved wooden shelves form bays in which the boys can sit and read. Several other desks are provided in the centre of the library. A crucifix on the wall of the library reminds scholars of the Roman Catholic emphasis of the school.

Meet "my" Tobias Carrick
No. I didn't create Tobias Carrick. But in my HC for Tobias/Casey, I flesh out my version of Tobias Carrick. His character was left criminally underdeveloped in canon, leaving most writers to put together their own version of who he is . Since I have an extensive list of writing for this pairing, I thought it would be helpful to have this as a reference.
Meet MY Tobias Carrick...
Book: Open Heart Current/ForeverLI: Casey Mactavish (F!MC) Face claim: Jesse Williams Full Name: Tobias Charles Carrick Nicknames: T (most everyone), Dwight (Ethan), Babe, honey, sexy, and other nauseating names (Casey) Age/DOB: February 19, 1984 Born: Washington, D.C.
Meet Casey Mactavish Carrick Tobias & Casey Masterlist
Parents:
Vivian Edmonds Carrick was 24 at the time of his birth. She was the first in her family to attend college. She put herself through community college and earned a scholarship to George Washington University. Where she met Charles.
Charles Theodore Carrick was 26 when Tobias was born. He was from an extremely wealthy family with deep roots in Washington, DC. His father was disappointed when he pursued a career in medicine, but he went on to be one of the most respected physicians in his field.
Vivian was a nurse, then later an art curator and philanthropist. Her focus was on improving arts and science education and career opportunities in disadvantaged neighborhoods in the Washington, DC area.
Tobias was close with his parents, but there were issues. Especially with his father. When he was approaching adulthood, Tobias didn't feel his father, a white man, was sensitive to the challenges he faced as a young, biracial man in America. Charles tried, but there was a gap that could have been closed, instead, both men became defensive and dug in their heels.
When Tobias chose to go to Howard, an HBCU, for undergrad as opposed to his family's alma mater GW, or an Ivy, his father was displeased (he felt it would lead to his son having fewer opportunities), and their relationship was permanently damaged. While he was in Hopkins Med School, Charles was diagnosed with cancer and not given long to live. They began to repair their relationship, but Charles died sooner than expected. Their failure to truly make peace with his father before he passed had a long-lasting effect on Tobias, his relationship with his brother, and others.
Siblings:
One brother, Jordan, is seven years his junior.
Tobias was an only child for a long time, so he wasn't sure how he felt about having a sibling. They were close, but the difference in age made things hard.
His parents were loving but often busy with work, charity, and social events. He loved his brother and was very protective, but not exceptionally close.
They had a major falling out when his father died but was able to repair their relationship - with one more bump in the road - later on.
College: Howard University, Washington DC. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Bio-Chemistry. Though his family was from DC, Tobias lived on campus while attending college.
Med School: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. He graduated 2nd in his class.
Occupation: He begins his career as a resident at Mass Kenmore Hospital in Boston, staying on as an attending when his program is complete; he eventually leads MK's diagnostics team. He moves to Edenbrook shortly after he begins dating Casey. When Casey gets a job offer in DC, they move together, and he works in private practice to afford him more time with his girls until an opportunity opens for him to be COM at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia. He works there for a short time, then, after Casey gives birth to their third child, the two decide to start a family practice together.
Growing up: Tobias always felt like he straddled two worlds: His father's extremely wealthy white family and his mother's lower-middle-income black family. They lived in the same city, but it may as well have been two different worlds. He never felt fully accepted by most in his father's family and preferred being with his mother's until he was a teen.
He had always been close with his maternal cousins, but once he was in high school, the differences in their lives caused issues. He was in one of the most elite private schools in the nation, sitting next to children of ambassadors and world leaders, and his cousins couldn't relate. Some were envious. Some accused him of not understanding them. He felt guilt, and he felt attacked, and once again, he felt like he didn't belong.
He was an only child for 7-years, and he sometimes felt lonely. His parents were loving but often busy with work, charity, and social events. He loved his brother, but the age gap didn't allow for them to become too close. They had a major falling out when his father died but was able to repair their relationship - with one more bump in the road - later on.
College:
He thrived in Howard. It really was the first time he felt as if he belonged, but that caused a bigger wedge with his father.
He was a straight A-student but also partied hard.
He dated Kara Willson for a year and a half but skated far too close to infidelity one too many times, and she kicked him to the curb. At that point, he swore off committed relationships until he was set in his career.
He graduated at the top of his class.
Med School:
The first two years were among the happiest times of his life. He and Ethan were best friends and created a found family. He was thriving and felt like the world was opening to him.
His father's illness was the first thing to end that joyful period, and his death brought it to a halt.
That coincided with his competition with Ethan becoming toxic and their friendship ending. This led to a long period where Tobias's life looked bright on the outside, but the inside was another story.
He kept true to no serious relationships. College and med school were flings, occasional ONS, and a longstanding arrangement with a local woman, Amanda.... until Vincenza (aka, Hopkins girl).
Tobias and "Cenza" were close friends, and decided not to take their relationship further after she broke up with Ethan... until they did. They dated secretly (out of respect for Ethan) for 6-months, even planning on finding residencies near each other - until he said something crass about being with Cenza at a party shortly before graduation, and she was officially done with both of them.
Other relationships:
The last time he attempted a serious relationship was as a resident when he dated Sasha Carlson, who was working in the administration department at Kenmore. She was wonderful, they dated for one year, and then it was clear she wanted more, and he couldn't do it. They broke up, and he swore if he didn't want "it" with her, it was time to admit a long-term-committed relationship was not for him. He swore on to being an eternal bachelor. (He and Sasha became friends later, and when he begins dating Casey, she and Kerry, his first girlfriend/family friend, are his two best friends.)
His adult years were not as "ho-ish" as many may believe. lol He tended to have long-term "no-strings-attached" relationships that were mostly for sex and occasional companionship, never really any deep emotion. (The Exes)
When he met Casey, initially, he assumed it had to be a physical attraction and figured if he indulged in that, the insane feeling possessing him would pass. In time, he realized he was really feeling something, but he blew it. Then she almost died (chemical attack), and she let him back in - only as a friend... and then - they fell in love.
Traits and random things: Tobias is charismatic AF; he could charm the paint off of a wall. He is also relatively happy-go-lucky and wants to enjoy life as much as possible, even if he is misguided at times. He retains this part of his personality even after he settles down with Casey. Some find it odd that he could be so into her, being together, a husband and father - but it's not a stretch. He found the one. And he is as "go big or go home" with her as he is with everything else in his life.
Random things:
Like Casey, he has varied musical tastes. But he has a huge love for Motown. When he finds out Casey does, too, he realizes it was fate. lol
He is very wealthy but not a snob. It's likely his exposure to his mother's family and their struggles that kept him grounded. This is why he can understand (if not fully relate to) Casey, who grew up struggling financially.
That said, he does like the finer things. Clothes, travel, cars, dining out. When he was single, he loved dropping $$$ to impress his dates. When he's with Casey, he loves spoiling her rotten. This is an issue for her, and they have to strike a balance.
Most don't know it, but he's more socially conscious than he appears. His parent's philanthropy (especially his mother's) had a huge impact on him, as did the time he spent with his maternal grandparents, who were active members of their community church. He had gotten into a habit of letting a check be his contribution, but after being with Casey, who was much more hands-on, he rediscovered that part of himself too.
He embraced being a husband and father to the shock of... well, everyone. But he wasn't like Ethan, who wanted love but feared it. Tobias had no fear of it. He just didn't want it because he never met anyone he could see it with. Once he did, there was no "fear factor" to get over, and that's why he was (see above) go big or go home. Casey had cold feet more than he did.
That's more than enough for now. LMAO

The more you watch, the better it will probably be to attract. Sketching is a free hand drawing made with pencil on paper. For making great portrayals, you ought to have appropriate gives like outline pencils and paper. The standard of provisions can affect the tip results. Sketchers keep up pencils in various sorts like tripod hold, overhand grasp and underhand grasp. Be that as it may, there is no most noteworthy style. You ought to pick the style that you are most comfortable with. It is best to begin honing with basic figures like straight follows, bends, circles, ovals, squares and triangles. Albeit, a great many people expect that it is easy to draw such figures and they don't have to buckle down, however it isn't so. Numerous individuals can not draw basic figures with free hand. Acing basic figures will make it less demanding to deal with your hand development, which is stage one to drawing a heavenly sketch. When you change into capable in drawing geometric figures, it is best to begin drawing figures of scenes, properties, and pets. Routinely exchange to the sort of portrayals that you wish to draw. You can be a piece of an illustration class or concentrate a few aptitudes and tips from a private guide. You also can take the help of internet drawing instructional exercises for learning strategies to sketch. It's no mystery that we're passing by methods for some essentially attempting financial events. Subsidence, sadness, twofold plunge retreat, paying little heed to the specialists and examiners are calling it meanwhile, cases are troublesome and the joblessness cost is without question one of the most exceedingly awful inside the historical backdrop of our nation. While one of numerous issues which I do is instruct people tips on the most proficient method to win a living with growing a site by offshoot promoting and publicizing, in fact it sets aside some opportunity to build up a gainful site which you'll live off of. Therefore at introduce we'll discuss what to do once you're resolved and cover how you can make money online rapidly. Additional essentially it will exclusively discuss how you can wind up gainful quick on-line without spending a dime specifically. Micro Employment Websites Providing your suppliers is kind of conceivably the speediest technique to profit online rapidly. Smaller scale work locales like Fiverr.com are the manner by which heaps of individuals make an ensured quick buck by publicizing their organizations to included buyers. These are sites which you can go to and win cash from about something which you'll consider. Take your aptitudes and publicize them on these sites and intrigued buyers will get in touch with you about doing your promoted work for them. You get paid in a flash for doing what you're enthused about or have a capacity for regardless of whether that is composing articles/content material, doing work in Photoshop for somebody, completing an illustration or draw, doing voiceover work; truly anything you'll have the capacity to think of. GigHour, Gigbucks, Fittytown pay out at a ton more prominent levels than Fiverr so think about how a great deal whatever you're publicizing is worth and get to it. I have assembled a total helpful asset on how you can influence money with Fiverr to emerge from the group, to discover customers, and get paid; this data might be connected to any miniaturized scale work site, as well. Craigslist Craigslist stays to be an awesome place for finding brisk coincidental occupations which pay notwithstanding all day work. Only a couple of years in the past once I was simply beginning in associate web promoting and didn't know much to anything Tamahagane about what toiled and what didn't work and was therefore in any case attempting to help myself, I took to Craigslist and found a few employments which spared me going inside the snappy term while I got my footing. One work made them compose portrayals for a mess of money related items on a budgetary site loaded with associate gives (which I didn't see till later). I used to be paid $1000 for only a couple of days of work. Take a glance at the "And so forth." segment, low maintenance segment, or pursuit "working from home" in your city or any number of enormous urban communities for gigs which you can do from your own home. Basically be sure that to practice your due persistence to simply make certain you're working with a decent one that won't solid you on charge. It's best to get an agreement worked out to decide the parameters of your trade with your legally binding business when it's a similarly goliath whole of money like $one thousand. There are a lot of free contract destinations out there which you'll have the capacity to snatch free documentation from and may effectively alter in your functions. eBay eBay is a decent place to wind up beneficial on-line rapidly by ordering and auctioning off your potential resources to captivated occasions for a quick payday. You may likewise investigate what is offering on eBay at that point fly in to your local thrift shops and pawn shops to seek out these things at that point exchange them on eBay at a higher rate for a lovely profit. Online Advertising Okay so I said in opening that on the web/subsidiary web showcasing sets aside opportunity to truly take off. That doesn't infer you could't end up productive on-line in no time by it, as well. You can get a site enrolled for $7.forty nine with my GoDaddy Website Rebate and web facilitating for $2.ninety nine a month by methods for my GoDaddy Website Markdown, at that point you can get a site organize in 10 minutes. Make that webpage into small scale site to publicize outstanding amongst other partner item in your specialty by looking OfferVault, ClickBank, Expense Intersection, PayDotCom, LinkShare, ShareASale, and so forth.. At that point send some activity to that site and make some money inside the brisk day and age though developing that smaller than expected website directly into a substance site in the background. You may likewise get a free blog on WordPress.com yet the issue with that will be that it's not yours and furthermore you're truly profiting and making someone else's undertaking moderately than your own particular which is seldom a decent idea. Create Your Own Product Creating your own item isn't as troublesome as you'd expect. I'll have a whole valuable asset gave to teaching the best approach to make your own online item and elevating it to profit. Web offshoot promoting is a certain something, however once you build up your own item and find your individual partners, that is the point at which the genuine trade starts to turn out and that is the means by which the web business people making 7 figures an a year make the vast majority of their cash. On the slightest you may make a data item inside a specialty which you have ability and learning in. People like advanced stock since it is a quick acquire and educational items have customarily constantly sold extremely well on-line, in this way the ubiquity of Clickbank. Get Inventive Go to your local mother and pop stores and inquire as to whether they have a web website for their undertaking and if not then give to manufacture them a site for only a couple of hundred dollars. On the off chance that the appropriate response is no then start the wrangling sport. As I appear in my motion pictures on simple techniques to organize a site at no cost well ordered again and discover how to utilize WordPress, you can set up a completely utilitarian and drawing in site in 10 minutes while not having any experience. The reason for existing is to be imaginative. There are numerous administrations which you can offer which show up out of your scope however are anything but difficult to execute and there are numerous individuals who get themselves either apathetic or dismayed at something like the idea of building up a web website. An imaginative musings in addition to publicizing squares with achievement in this case. When You are Urgent Keep in mind In the occasion you're truly up contrary to the divider, reach office simply like the Salvation Military, sustenance banks, or city human administration divisions to guarantee that you keep the lights on and suppers on the table.

His father Dr. Charles Waldo Scott (1916–93) was a pioneering African American surgeon and in 1952 became the first African American appointed to the Newport News school board in the 20th century. Scott's mother Mae Hamlin-Scott (1918-2010), a graduate in chemistry from the University of Michigan, was an educator who taught science in the Newport News public schools.
Scott graduated from Groton School in 1965. He went on to receive his A.B. in government from Harvard College in (1969) and his Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School in 1973. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

In 1992, the Department of Justice directed the Virginia legislature to draw a black-majority district after the 1990 census. The legislature responded by shifting most of the black residents of Hampton Roads and Richmond into a newly created 3rd District. Scott was challenged by Republican Marty Williams. Scott defeated him 66%-33%, the lowest winning percentage of his career.

Also, having a maternal grandfather of Filipino ancestry gives Scott the distinction of being the first American of Filipino descent to serve as a voting member of Congress. Scott's congressional district is the only one with a majority black population in Virginia. The district was created in 1992 and has remained the most Democratic district in Virginia.

U.S. Senate speculation
When then-presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton selected Tim Kaine, a U.S. Senator from Virginia, as her running mate in July 2016, speculation arouse about who would be nominated to replace Kaine in the Senate, should the ticket win. In August 2016, former Democratic Governor of Virginia Douglas Wilder stated that he would want Governor Terry McAuliffe to appoint Scott to the seat, stating that it "would be good for the commonwealth, good for the Democratic Party, of which Bobby has been most supportive, and great for our nation." On November 8, however, Clinton and Kaine lost the election and Kaine remained in his Senate seat.
Controversies2017 sexual harassment allegation
On December 15, 2017, Marsheri Everson (also known as M. Reese Everson), a former congressional fellow who had worked in Scott's office, alleged that Scott had sexually harassed her in 2013 which started by him touching her on the knee and back on separate occasions. Then later ended in a confrontation in his office where he propositioned Everson with an inappropriate relationship after asking "if you travel with me, are you going to be good?" Scott strongly denied Everson's claim. Everson was represented by two attorneys, one Jack Burkman, known for his involvement in the conspiracy theories surrounding the murder of Seth Rich as well as his alleged involvement in a scheme to pay women to lie about sexual harassment claims against special counsel and former FBI Director Robert Mueller.
Everson's case against Scott is ongoing.
Knowledge of sexual assault allegations against Justin Fairfax
Scripps professor Vanessa C. Tyson alleged in 2019 that she was sexually assaulted by Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax in 2004 and had approached Scott, a long-time friend, about these allegations between the time of Fairfax's election in November 2017 and inauguration in January 2018; Scott was also contacted about the allegations by The Washington Post. In a 2019 statement, Scott said, "Allegations of sexual assault need to be taken seriously. I have known Professor Tyson for approximately a decade and she is a friend. She deserves the opportunity to have her story heard."

Growing Green in Turkey
By Zainab Pashaei
Of the many countries looking to reduce their carbon footprint through landscape restoration and sustainability, you will find Turkey among them. When discussing Turkey, you may think of Turkish delight, exotic spices, historical ruins, or if you are a cat-person, the infamous street cats. What most do not know is that the country broke a record on November 12, 2019, for the most tree saplings planted in an hour: 303,150. As part of the nation’s campaign to restore its forests, eleven million trees were adopted online and planted across the country on the now official National Forestation Day (November 11). After spending time this past year in Istanbul and other cities across Turkey, I did notice from the window of my tour bus the many young trees adorning the landscape. Considering growing global health and environmental concerns, instilling environmentally friendly garden practices in the youth and establishing a place for people to reconnect with nature was a priority for one district in Istanbul. On a smaller scale amidst the crowds in Istanbul, I found the herbally-relevant Zeytinburnu Medicinal Plant Garden and Farm, a serene place for people to learn more about herbs.
As part of an urban regeneration project, this was Turkey’s first medicinal plant garden, which opened to the public in 2005 on 14 acres of land in the Zeytinburnu district. The garden boasts organic treatment of its plants, including natural compost and fertilizers. By adopting these methods, the garden hopes to demonstrate the sanctity of human health, the environment, and how the two intertwine. The garden researches and tests herbal plant material for quality and for safe use in oils and drugs. It is open year-round to educate the public about the safe and effective use of medicinal plants and has ongoing herbal and gardening educational workshops for adults and children.
Zeytinburnu Medicinal Plant Garden and its Health and Environment School conduct health classes, such as, phytotherapy, aromatherapy, first-aid plants, Ottoman traditional medicine, and medicinal plant chemistry. The phytotherapy seminar, for example, covers Turkey’s vegetation, poisonous plants, medicinal plant names and drugs, active components in the medicinal plants, theoretical and practical cultivation, harvesting and preparation of drugs, storage and control, and finally, use, possible interactions, warnings, and prescriptions for certain health problems.
The aromatherapy course covers essential oils, fragrances, cosmetics, the sense of smell, inhalation, and external applications of essential oils, as well as prescriptions for various ailments, such as cosmetic problems, minor burns, stress-induced headaches, sinus and respiratory congestion, and mild anxiety or depression. The horticulture staff also produces essential oils on-site from the 700 plant species that are cultivated in the garden, which they, then, sell to the public.
Additionally, Zeytinburnu employs researchers who study various medicinal plants and who provide guidance to the public in order to promote the plants’ value, both through an online Turkish publication and on the garden’s web site, which highlights proper seed storage and the medicinal preparation for hundreds of medicinal plants. In addition to the medicinal classes, there are culinary classes as well. Courses cover edible herbs and flowers, herbal teas, herbal energy drinks, tinctures, essential oils, and spice making.
Outside Zeytinburnu Medicinal Plant Garden, I strolled through the bazaar with its colorful displays of herbs and spices. Seeing the wonderful array of plant material, I realized that, in addition to their well-established spice markets, Turkey has a quietly growing green movement. I am reminded of the beauty and diversity of our herbal plants, both at home and abroad.

Dreaming of a Cure: Heman Bekele Is TIME’s 2024 Kid of the Year!
— By Jeffrey Kluger | August 15, 2024
Photograph By Dina Litovsky For TIME
Heman Bekele whipped up the most dangerous of what he called his “potions” when he was just over 7 years old. He’d been conducting his own science experiments for about three years by that point, mixing up whatever he could get his hands on at home and waiting to see if the resulting goo would turn into anything.
“They were just dish soap, laundry detergent, and common household chemicals,” he says today of the ingredients he’d use.
Heman Bekele photographed at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore on July 11 – Dina Litovsky For TIME
For close to half a year now, Heman and Rebecca have been running basic research on mice, injecting the animals with strains of skin cancer and preparing to apply the lipid-bound, imiquimod-infused soap and see what the results are.

Somerville graces Scotland note
Last fall, the Royal Bank of Scotland released its new £10 note. The note’s right face is dominated by a three-quarter profile of Mary Somerville.
A public vote in 2016 to decide who should appear on the new RBS tenner saw Somerville easily beat out physicist James Clerk Maxwell and civil engineer Thomas Telford.
Today, few would have heard of Somerville. Yet in the 19th century, she was internationally recognized both as an extraordinary person and an even more extraordinary woman.
Face of Royal Bank of Scotland’s new brown, 132×69 mm, polymer £10 note showing a three-quarter profile of Scottish polymath Mary Somerville. When John Stuart Mill organized a major petition to Parliament asking for women to be given the right to vote, the first signature he sought was that of Mary Somerville. (Image courtesy Trevor Wilkin ex Royal Bank of Scotland)
Mary was the daughter of Vice-Admiral Sir William George Fairfax. The admiral’s pay was meager, and the family lived in genteel poverty. This was the day and age when society deemed reading, writing and ’rithmetic unnecessary for a gentlewoman’s primary role of snagging themselves a suitable husband.
Nonetheless, Mary’s mother taught her to read, and her father sent her to school to learn writing, grammar and French. Her father had an excellent library in which Mary regularly immersed herself. Her aunt did not approve.
At 13, her mother sent her to Edinburgh to expand her writing skills. Here she also learned the rules of arithmetic while teaching herself Latin.
She was encouraged by an uncle to expand her knowledge. He assured her that many classical women had been elegant scholars. He introduced her to Virgil in the original Latin.
All this education encouraged Mary to be her own person and think for herself. She demonstrated this politically. Her father might be a dyed-in-the wool Tory, but Mary became a staunch liberal – although never a republican!
One summer, the duckling found water. Mary discovered books of algebra and geometry. With Euclid’s Elements heading her reading list, she never looked back, but in-between times taught herself Greek.
In 1804, she married. It was not a happy time. Mary’s husband believed women lacked the capacity for intellectual pursuits. However, when he died in 1807, her inheritance gave her independence. She returned to Scotland and threw herself into mathematics. She mastered plane and spherical trigonometry, followed by conic sections. James Ferguson’s Astronomy was digested, along with Newton’s Principia. When she solved a Diophantine problem in 1811, she was awarded a silver medal.
She came to the attention of Scottish academics. They directed her to Laplace’s studies of gravity, along with the mathematical results of the 50 years since Principia was published. Astronomy, chemistry, geography, microscopy, electricity and magnetism were absorbed.
In 1812, she married Dr. William Somerville. He encouraged her studies. His connections led Mary to meet many of the great minds of the day.
In 1826, her first paper was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society. It concerned “The magnetic properties of the violet rays of the solar spectrum.” This saw the Royal Society invite Mary to translate Laplace’s five volumes of Mécanique Céleste, the sum of current knowledge of gravitational mathematics.
Mary produced more than a translation. She expanded the first two volumes and included a stand-alone mathematical exposition of the workings of the solar system: The Mechanism of the Heavens. It became the standard textbook on the subject at the University of Cambridge and established Mary internationally. The Crown granted her a civil pension of £200 a year in recognition of her eminence in science and literature.
Mary’s passion had become astronomy, which she considered the link for all branches of physical science. That link was demonstrated in her 1834 book, On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences. It documented the latest advances in astronomy, physics, chemistry, botany and geology. In a review, William Whewell coined the term “scientist” for Mary. Until then, “man of science” had been the common English usage.
Her Physical Geography – the first English text on the subject – was published in 1848 and brought her the Victoria Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. It was followed in 1869 by Molecular and Microscopic Science.
Throughout her professional life, Mary updated her books regularly. The sale of the revised editions provided an important source of income. The 15,000 copies of Connexions alone provided financial security and established her among the scientific elite. It was the most successful scientific book prior to Darwin’s Origin of Species in 1859.
In 1835, Mary and Caroline Herschel became the first women members of the Royal Astronomical Society. This was no tokenism, as Mary demonstrated in 1842. The sixth edition of Connexions discussed a hypothetical planet. An estimate was made of the unknown’s size and mass. Her observations saw John Couch Adams confirm Mary’s predictions in 1846 with the discovery of Neptune.
Mary died at Naples in November 1872. Today, her name is attached to an asteroid and a lunar crater, while her face graces an RBS £10 note.

Now this fighter-in-training will have to fight his own intense feelings—to keep their little charade from turning into a major disaster .
Review
I have enjoyed every book in this series but I think this is the most intense one yet. CHAIN REACTION is filled with suspense, easy chemistry and passion between the man characters and got a very strong reaction from me because of who the villains were.
Alexa Fairfax seems to have it all. She’s Hollywood royalty and grew up with the very best that money can buy, but all that money can’t buy her happiness. Getting her own place away from her parents was her first stab at independence and life that does not include being a pawn in her parents’ quest for more of everything. Stumbling into a life and death conspiracy only confirms that getting out was a really good idea, but it also highlights her need for personal security and she knows just the right people to help with that.
Zack De Luca has always had a thing for Alexa but the timing between them was never right. Now she’s in danger, he won’t trust her safety to anyone else, even if it throws a wrench into his own future. Besides, playing boyfriend will give him a taste of what he’s always wanted but never thought he could get.
Zack and Alexa have always had feelings for each other and the circumstances and close proximity made hard for them to avoid the sizzling chemistry between them or their feelings for each other. In spite of all that she had been through and growing up as she had, Alexa was a genuinely sweet, kind and easygoing person. Zack was a perfect fit for the work of a bodyguard, but with Alexa he was whole more – very protective and possessive.
I really enjoyed the friendships among the entire crew and how unreservedly supportive of Alexa the group was. They gave her a sense of belonging that she had always lacked with her own family.
This was some really great suspense from Ms. Wyatt and to be honest, it gave me a pause for a minute. The pursuit for power and money really sank to the lowest level, everything was expendable in the quest for more and nothing was off-limits.
This story combines a sweet friendship and passionate romance with deadly intrigue and suspense and I really can’t wait for more from Ms. Wyatt.
