Jahr…

Colmar
Oh my. OH MY. Today we hopped on a train and traveled just 30 minutes down the track and I discovered my new favorite place in the world. When we planned this trip we waffled between making our base in Strasbourg or Colmar, settling on Strasbourg based on it being the largest train station in this area, sort of a hub for everywhere we wanted to go. There was also a greater selection of AirBnB apartments here in Strasbourg. It was definitely a practical decision. If we ever do this again I will plant myself in Colmar and stay there. It's hard to explain, but you know how you can see places of equal beauty, but one spot just has a happier, more welcoming vibe? That's how I felt today. Strasbourg has been wonderful, no complaints at all - but Colmar (for me) is just...better.
This was our day. We were at the train station around 10am, found our train # and the platform with ease.
You know I always have to make the joke that there's a train just for me. Someday I need to check out Nancy, France and see what they're doing there. Anyway, we took the quick trip to our destination and then walked less than ten minutes right into the heart of all of this.
The center of Colmar is called Little Venice because you can get up and down the canals via water taxis.
So of course we did. For $8 each we took a tour. It was wonderful!
Our guide answered a lot of questions. I found out that those hearts carved into shutters (that I've seen so often) used to mean that the man of the house had daughters whose hearts were available for marriage.
After our educational and very pleasant boat ride, we explored this happy town.
Even though it's mid-October the flowers are still incredible.
We learned a bit of history, like many of the towns in this region Colmar has changed hands between Germany and France several times. Different rulers, different wars, making deals - that's why you ca order sauerkraut and crepes at the same restaurant.
There's Mr. Schwendi.
We stopped into Colmar's famous covered market - a feast for the senses!
Anything you could possibly want to eat, plus fresh flowers, fabric by the yard, coffee, whatever. I hate mushrooms but these were absolutely beautiful. They look like a watercolor!
One of everything, please! We came back to the covered market at the end of our day when rain threatened (it poured for about 20 minutes) and enjoyed coffee and a cookie. Prior to that we'd enjoyed a delicious lunch. Fried Munster cheese on a salad? Don't mind if I do. Don't you dare judge me, I'm just trying to fit in. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
The shops and boutiques were such fun. You know I found treasure in here. Just a trinket, but a sweet reminder of this day.
I won't blab on and on, no one wants to look at someone else's vacation slides. I get it. But if you ever, EVER have the chance to travel to Colmar, do it. That said, remember my Irish hair, Fiona? She was WILD. The damp Irish weather coupled with wind gave my curls free rein and it was bad, very bad. So far on this trip, we've had sprinkle here and there, usually just one quick bout with humidity. Today was the first day there was actual rain and it was thankfully brief. My hair has turned into Fiona's French cousin, Félicie. She's a tad more subdued, but still making her presence known. I don't even try anymore. I wake up and say, "Well, this is how I look today. Brace yourself, France." I've been observing French women of all ages, trying to figure out how they look so effortlessly chic. I think a large portion of their style has to do with not giving a flip. I'm adopting that attitude. More on that when I get home. Until then, here's Félicie on the train back to Strasbourg today. Not yet unruly, jut unkempt. This also serves as proof that we are alive and well and enjoying this wonderful adventure.
I'll leave you with a terrible video I made as we walked from the train station in Colmar. This fellow was playing so beautifully, but I made the mistake of standing right beside the outdoor seating of a very busy restaurant. Oops. There was music everywhere. While we ate lunch a violinist serenaded the square. *Magical!*

Tomorrow we'll travel to Basel, Switzerland and I hope to have a happy report to give you. Until then, mon amis, stay safe, stay well. Sending you LOVE. XOXO, Nancy
