UPCOMING PERFORMANCES BY DAME SARAH CONNOLLY

[NOTE: this post is now out of date. Check the schedule tag on my blog for the most recent version of this list.]

After the jump: an unofficial schedule of Dame Sarah Connolly’s future performances. Those of you in Britain may catch a performance in London, Cardiff, Leeds, Oxford, Gloucester, Bath, or Chipping Campden. Those on the Continent may see her in Berlin, Madrid, Paris, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Geneva, Zeist, or Baden-Baden. And finally, those of us in North America have a recital in Philadelphia to look forward to! Don’t live near one of these places? Take in a concert from afar: I am adding online broadcast and livestream details as they become available.

This is not an authoritative list. These are the upcoming performances by Dame Sarah Connolly that I have been able to learn about from Dame Sarah’s agent's website (Askonas Holt), Operabase, Bachtrack, Dame Sarah's Twitter, and generally ferreting around the web.

I sometimes list concerts that are not yet officially confirmed; you should of course check official sources before making plans and be aware that cast changes and cancellations can happen at any time.

I have added links to venue, ticketing, and broadcast information where available. Tips on new information are always welcome! [Masterclass] Public masterclass at Wigmore Hall, London, September 19, 2018. Part of Dame Sarah’s residency at the Wigmore.

Wagner, Das Rheingold and Die Walküre (Fricka in both) at the Royal Opera, London, September 24 through October 28, 2018. A revival of Keith Warner’s Ring Cycle, with Antonio Pappano conducting. For cast and date details, see the ROH web pages linked above. The October 28 performance will be livecast to cinemas; the October 18 performance, also marked “Filming,” is presumably a dry run for the camera crews and/or a chance to gather additional footage for promos and perhaps an eventual DVD release (we can hope). Rheingold dates: September 24; October 2, 16, and 26. Walküre dates: September 26; October 4, 18, and 28.

[New! Broadcast] There will be an audio-only broadcast of Das Rheingold by BBC Radio 3 on Saturday, October 27—conveniently timed to prime listeners for the livecast of Die Walküre the following day. If you can’t listen at the time of broadcast, though, you should be able to find the Rheingold audio archived on the BBC website for a month following.

[Cinema livecast] As mentioned above, the October 28 performance of Die Walküre is scheduled for livecast to cinemas. You can use this page to search for a screening near you. Oddly, no screenings are being shown in the US at the time of this writing, but I know of at least one deferred screening in New York, at Symphony Space on November 25.

[New! Broadcast] There will be an audio-only broadcast of Die Walküre by BBC Radio 3 on Saturday, November 3. As with all BBC Radio 3 programming, I would expect it to stay online for a month after broadcast. It seems like a fair guess that the other two Ring operas will be broadcast on subsequent Saturdays; check the Radio 3 website when the time gets closer, if you are interested.

Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde at the Royal Festival Hall, London, September 29, 2018. With Stuart Skelton and the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. In a concert with Mitsiko Uchida playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27.

Appearance at “Opera For All” anniversary show at the English National Opera, London, October 10, 2018. The exact program has not (to my knowledge) been announced, but a blog post from ENO says “The performance will feature moments from operas that have played an important part in ENO’s history, including Britten’s Peter Grimes, Handel’s Alcina, Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe Verdi’s Rigoletto and Wagner’s Ring Cycle.” Dame Sarah has sung roles in Alcina, Iolanthe, and the Ring Cycle, but I believe Alcina is the only one she has performed at ENO, and my hunch is that she will offer one or two of the Handel arias she has sung to such acclaim at ENO over the years.

Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde at the Philharmonie Berlin, October 14, 2018. With Torsten Kerl Robert Dean Smith and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin conducted by Vladimir Jurowski.

[Broadcast] The concert is scheduled for live broadcast on Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

Recital of English song at the Oxford Lieder Festival, October 22, 2018. With Eugene Asti. Songs in English by numerous British composers including Rebecca Clarke, Muriel Herbert, and Sally Beamish. There is a good deal of overlap with the selections on Dame Sarah’s recent album “Come to Me in My Dreams.”

Concert with Tenebrae at Wigmore Hall, London, October 24, 2018. Part of Dame Sarah’s yearlong residency at the Wigmore. The mostly English repertoire centers on a new piece by Judith Bingham setting poetry by Ivor Gurney. The choir throws in some Schoenberg at the end.

Purcell, Dido and Aeneas (Dido) in concert at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, November 3, 2018. With the Early Opera Company conducted by Christian Curnyn, in a concert also featuring John Blow’s Venus and Adonis (which does not include Dame Sarah in the cast). Dame Sarah’s co-stars are Jonathan McGovern, Lucy Crowe, Dame Felicity Palmer Avery Amereau, and Rowan Pierce.

[New! Broadcast] Thank you to the astute reader who pointed out that, as mentioned on the Early Opera Company’s website (and less explicitly on the Concertgebouw site), this concert will be broadcast live on NPO Radio 4 as part of the NTR Saturday Matinee series. Recordings from the series seem to be kept available online for quite a while, so you should have ample chance to hear the concert even if you cannot tune in at the hour of live broadcast.

Tippett, A Child of our Time at the Paris Philharmonie, November 7 and 8, 2018. With Michelle Bradley, Mark Padmore, John Relyea, and the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Thomas Adès in a concert also featuring symphonic works by Berlioz and Adès.

[New! Broadcast] The Orchestre de Paris website says, “Concert du 7 novembre enregistré et diffusé sur France Musique en différé et disponible à la réécoute sur le site internet de France Musique en streaming pour une période de 3 ans.” I never took French but read that to mean that we can expect a deferred broadcast of the November 7 concert, available for replay for three years. I have not been able to find a date of broadcast yet but I will keep an eye out for it.

Recital at the Bath Mozartfest, Guildhall, Bath, November 13, 2018. With Joseph Middleton. Repertoire to include “Deh, per questo istante solo” from La Clemenza di Tito as well as songs by Schubert, Ravel, Debussy, Gurney, and Ireland. UPDATE: Dame Sarah withdrew from the concert and was replaced by Louise Alder.

"L’invitation au voyage,” song recital at Wigmore Hall, London, November 16, 2018. With James Newby and Joseph Middleton. The repertoire is Ravel-centric but not all by Ravel himself. Part of Dame Sarah’s residency at the Wigmore and also part of a Ravel song series being presented by the venue over the course of the year.

[New! Deferred broadcast] Recital at the Schubertíada Vilabertran. With Malcolm Martineau and Jonathan Brown. Works by Brahms, Mahler, Gurney, Richard Rodney Bennett, and Frank Bridge. Recorded at the live performance on August 18, 2018; scheduled for broadcast [PDF] on Catalunya Música November 23, 2018.

Appearance at the Glyndebourne Tour: Golden Anniversary Celebration at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, December 4, 2018. Sir Thomas Allen and Sir John Tomlinson are also appearing at the concert, and the Glyndebourne website says “More performers will be announced in the coming weeks.” The program has not been announced yet but I will be surprised if Dame Sarah does not reprise an aria or two from Giulio Cesare. This event does not yet appear on the Southbank Centre’s calendar, and I don’t see a way to purchase tickets online, but they apparently are available by phoning the Glyndebourne box office.

Wagner, Das Rheingold (Fricka) at the Teatro Real, Madrid, January 17 through February 1, 2019. In a production by Robert Carsen; conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado. Co-stars include Greer Grimsley (Wotan) and Sophie Bevan (Freia) among others.

Berlioz, L’Enfance du Christ with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff, February 15, 2019. Sir Andrew Davis conducts; the other vocal soloists in the all-Brit, all-excellent lineup are Andrew Staples, Roderick Williams, and Matthew Brook.

Recital with Julius Drake at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, March 5, 2019. Works by R. Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, A. Mahler, and Zemlinsky.

Recital with Julius Drake at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, March 7, 2019. I don’t see the repertoire mentioned on the theater’s website as of this writing, but presumably it will be similar to the works presented in Amsterdam and Philadelphia in the duo’s other recitals this month.

[New details!] Recital with Julius Drake at Wigmore Hall, London, March 15, 2019. Contrary to my earlier guess, Connolly and Drake are not repeating material from their recitals in Amsterdam and Madrid, but rather are preparing a completely different program for the Wigmore. It is described by Dame Sarah’s agency, Askonas Holt, thus: “On 15 March 2019, Sarah offers Dominick Argento’s cycle from Virginia Woolf’s posthumously published A Writer’s Diary, which won the composer the Pulitzer Prize in 1975, and Schumann’s moving late settings of texts attributed to Mary Stuart. She is partnered by pianist Julius Drake and actor Emily Berrington, who will intersperse the songs with reading from Woolf’s diaries and also from Schiller’s ‘Mary Stuart’, in a new translation made especially for the event.” Dame Sarah adds on Twitter, “There will be more songs in the second half.”

Recital with Julius Drake at the Kimmel Center, Philadelphia, March 22, 2019. Sponsored by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. Repertoire includes works by Brahms, Wolf, Roussel, Debussy, and Zemlinksy.

[New!] Berlioz, Les nuits d’été at the Chipping Campden Music Festival, May 21, 2019. In a program with orchestral works by Fauré and Mendelssohn. Thomas Hull conducts the Academy Orchestra. As of this writing, the 2019 program has not yet been published on the Festival’s website, but the season brochure is available upon request, and that is how I obtained these concert details.

[Details TBA] Appearance at the Internationaal LiedFestival Zeist (Netherlands), late May, 2019. The festival dates are May 17-26. Programming details have not yet been released as of this writing, but Dame Sarah is mentioned as one of the performing artists.

Elgar, The Dream of Gerontius with the Hallé and three choruses at Victoria Hall, Leeds, June 1, 2019. Barry Banks and David Soar are the other vocal soloists; Simon Wright conducts.

Mahler, Des Knaben Wunderhorn (extracts) and Janáček, Glagolitic Mass at the Maison de la Radio, Paris, June 20, 2019. With the Orchestre National de France and the Choeur de Radio France, conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. The other soloists for the Glagolitic Mass are Simona Šaturová, Mati Turi, and Christof Fischesser.

[Broadcast] This concert will be broadcast live on France Musique.

Recital with Malcolm Martineau at Wigmore Hall, London, July 23, 2019. Part of Dame Sarah’s yearlong residency at the Wigmore. Repertoire TBA. Listed in the season preview brochure [PDF].

Berlioz, La damnation de Faust (in concert, presumably) at the Three Choirs Festival, Gloucester, July 27, 2019. With Peter Hoare, Christopher Purves, and David Ireland. Tickets go on sale to the general public on April 24.

Bob Chilcott, A Christmas Oratorio (premiere) at the Three Choirs Festival, Gloucester, August 1, 2019. With Nick Pritchard and Neal Davies. Note that this is an afternoon concert, not the main evening concert for August 1. (Multi-mezzo fans may want to stick around to hear Anna Stéphany do Les nuites d’été in the evening.) Tickets go on sale to the general public on April 24.

[Unconfirmed / details TBA] Handel, Agrippina at the Dutch National Opera. In June 2018, opera critic Hugh Canning tweeted the news that the Royal Opera is planning to offer Barrie Kosky’s new production of Agrippina with Joyce DiDonato in the title role during the ’19/’20 season; in a reply that has now been deleted, Dame Sarah mentioned that she and Alice Coote would do the same production in Amsterdam and Munich. (If you are a member of the Sarah Connolly fan group on Facebook, you can scroll back in time to June and see a screenshot there.) Subsequent discussion revealed that Coote would get the Munich gig (in July 2019), so Connolly must be the Amsterdam Agrippina. The DNO has already announced its ’18-’19 season and Agrippina isn’t in it, so presumably we’re looking towards ’19-’20 or beyond.

[Unconfirmed / details TBA] Brett Dean, Hamlet (Gertrude) somewhere in the United States. Allan Clayton, who starred in the title role of Brett Dean’s Hamlet at Glyndebourne in 2017, mentioned in a recent interview with the Telegraph that he would be reprising the role at an unspecified date and venue in the US. When prompted on Twitter, Dame Sarah indicated that she would be participating in the revival, too (“I shall be misunderstanding my confused boy again”). Hat tip to Christopher Lowrey, who sang Guildenstern in the original production at Glyndebourne, whose tweet praising Allan Clayton brought the Telegraph interview to my attention. (No indication whether Lowrey will also be cast in the American revival.)

[Details TBA] A future appearance at the Opéra national de Paris is mentioned in the current bio that can be downloaded from Dame Sarah’s page on the Askonas Holt website (click “Publicity Pack”). I cannot find her name mentioned anywhere in the 2018-2019 season, so I suppose we must wait until at least the fall of 2019 if not later.

El dissabte 26 d’agost després de la intensa experiència en la que ens van sotmetre el Quartet Casals i després d’un necessari descans per recomposar l’esperit, l’estomac i refrescar-nos una mica, els més agosarats ens varem sotmetre a una de les més grans experiències musicals que es poden viure en una sala de concerts, el Winterreise de Franz Schubert, en aquesta ocasió amb el tenor alemany Cristopf Prégardien (18 de gener de 1956 Limburg an der Lahn) i el pianista escocès Malcolm Martineau.

He manifestat més d’una vegada que en general Schubert i el Winterreise en particular, me’ls estimo més en la veu de baríton i per ser més precís, de baix-baríton, però hi ha vegades que un tenor em fa oblidar aquesta preferència i en aquesta ocasió es va tornar a repetir la meva “traïció” als principis volàtils ja que la interpretació va ser senzillament colpidora per la interiorització, naturalitat, personalitat pròpia, extrema musicalitat, control del’emissió, domini de tota l’extrema extensió del registre i una elegància en el fraseig que van fer de la seva personalíssima interpretació, una nova experiència en un cicle on semblava que poques coses noves es podien dir.

Prégardien primorosament acompanyat per un especialista com Martineau, va recórrer el transcendent viatge amb una intensitat admirable, dosificant les emocions i no caient mai en sentimentalismes sobrers o grandiloqüències melodramàtiques, ens explicaven aquest viatge emocional amb veritable sinceritat, perquè dominant tècnicament tots els paranys, podien viure i fer viure l’experiència amb naturalitat.

Detalls meravellosos de sensibilitat, graduacions sensorials d’impacte i el domini vocal necessari per imprimir la justa i no més, expressió de solitud va fer que des del “Gute Nacht” inicial fins el desolador “Der Leiermmann”, aquests dos grans artistes ens portessin sense oportunitat d’escapatòria possible, al més bell i inquietant viatge interior, fent que l’experiència fos realment musicalment sincera i emotivament transcendent.

El públic que omplia l’església de Santa Maria va premiar llarga i sorollosament la intensitat del que ens varen oferir i la Schubertíada de Vilabertran va demostrar que en ha assolit un nivell de maduresa en aquests 25 anys que es celebren enguany, que el situa com el festival més important que es fa a Catalunya, ja sigui per la seriositat de la proposta, com per la categoria dels intèrprets i la perfecta simbiosi entre el públic i els artistes, gràcies també al miraculós recolliment que s’acostuma aconseguir en un marc tan propens al recolliment i a la concentració.

Per celebrar aquests primer gloriosos 25 anys d’existència el Doctor Jaume Graells, en nom del patronat que dirigeix aquesta Schubertíada va rendir homenatge al Doctor Jordi Roch, fundador, ànima i essència del festival. Aquest va respondre amb l’habitual senzillesa i contundent certesa, animant a estimar la música i la poesia, vehicles imprescindibles per fer que aquesta iniciativa tingui la llarga vida que tots li desitgem.. L’enhorabona!

Seguint la tradició infernemlandaire, avui publico l’agenda musical de Barcelona per a la propera temporada 2017/2018.

L’inicio en el mes de febrer de 2017 i l’acabo 13 mesos més tard, el mes de juliol de 2018. No inclou el concerts i representacions operístiques del mes de juliol pertanyent a la temporada 206/2017 ja inclosos en l’agenda de l’any passat.

El format ha variat una mica i no és tan acolorit com en les edicions anterior, per contra he separat els diferents auditoris (Liceu, Auditori, Palau i altres) per tal de que les cel·les siguin més entenedores, sobretot quan coincideixen en un mateix dia diversos concerts o activitats.

L’agenda “només” inclou l’activitat barcelonina incloses en els cicles:

Ja siguin del propi Liceu, Palau o Auditori o dels promotors amb temporada pròpia com Ibercamera, Bcn Clàssics, OCM, OSV inclosos en aquests recintes.

M’hagués agradat disposar de la temporada dels Amics de l’Òpera de Sarrià, dels Amics de l’Òpera de Sabadell (encara que siguin fora de Barcelona) o dels concerts del Cor Vivaldi, així com d’altres activitats musicals a Barcelona.

L’agenda tampoc inclou l’activitat musical del Liceu, Palau o Auditori aliena a la seva programació pròpia, vull dir que si algú busca a l’agenda quin dia tornaran les “chirigotas” de Cadiz al Liceu, no ho trobarà, com tampoc trobarà les Carmina Burana, Conciertos de Arajuez o Valsos vienesos que cada temporada inflen l’agenda.

Espero que sigui d’utilitat encara que en la majoria de caselles no hi ha gaire detall del concert, sobretot del Liceu, per la quantitat de variants en cada repartiment operístic pr altra part i com bé sabem, subjectes a tants canvis.

Handel, Giulio Cesare (title role) at Glyndebourne, last two shows on July 24 and 28, 2018. In a revival of the legendary 2005 production by David McVicar, with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment conducted by William Christie (June 10 - July 6) and Jonathan Cohen (July 10 - 28). With Joélle Harvey as Cleopatra, plus Christophe Dumaux and Patricia Bardon reprising the roles of Tolomeo and Cornelia respectively; also starring Anna Stéphany (Sesto), John Moore (Achilla), and Kangmin Justin Kim (Nireno).

Recital of English song at the BBC Proms, Cadogan Hall, London, August 6, 2018. With Joseph Middleton. The repertoire includes works by Britten, Bridge, Vaughn Williams, Parry, Holst, and several others—all of whom “studied or taught at the Royal College of Music”—with two world premieres by Mark-Anthony Turnage and Lisa Illean.

[Broadcast] As with all BBC Proms performances, this one will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and should remain available for listening on demand for about a month afterward.

Appearance at a charity concert to benefit the Ligue contre le cancer, Capestang, Languedoc, August 11, 2018. Dame Sarah’s participation is mentioned in English-language writeups here and here. There are very scant clues as to what repertoire she might perform.

Recital at the Schubertíada Vilabertran, August 18, 2018. With pianist Malcolm Martineau and viola player Jonathan Brown. Repertoire includes songs by Brahms, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder, and English songs by Richard Rodney Bennett, Ivor Gurney, and Frank Bridge.

[New! Broadcast] I can’t figure out how to deep-link the schedule on the radio station’s website, but this concert is scheduled to be broadcast live on Catalunya Música. I can’t promise that it will be available for listening on demand later, but CatMúsica generally makes concert recordings available (sometimes after a few days’ delay) here. (You may need to click “Tots” to see the full list. Concerts expire from the website after about a month.) UPDATE: Sorry, false alarm! I was looking at a schedule of live performances in the region, not the schedule of radio broadcasts. Oops! There is other programming scheduled at the time of Dame Sarah’s recital at Vilabertran. I believe the recital will be recorded but presumably we will have to wait a few weeks or months before it comes up for broadcast.

The October 28 performance will be livecast to cinemas; the October 18 performance, also marked “Filming,” is presumably a dry run for the camera crews and/or a chance to gather additional footage for promos and perhaps an eventual DVD release (we can hope).

[Broadcast] As mentioned above, the October 28 performance of Die Walküre is scheduled for livecast to cinemas. You can use this page to search for a screening near you—if you live in the UK, Europe, South Africa, or the US. At the moment, there do not appear to be any screenings scheduled elsewhere.

Appearance at “Opera For All” anniversary show at the English National Opera, London, October 10, 2018. Repertoire TBA. Somewhat ironically, tickets for “Opera For All” start at a hefty £45 for a few seats far back in the Upper Circle and Dress Circle, and climb steeply to £75 for the next cheapest price bracket. Update: the powers that be at ENO seem to have realized the error of their ways. As of this writing, I’m seeing tickets for £15 (very few seats), £45, and £55, as well as the pricier options (£75 and £125).

[Broadcast] The concert listing on the RSB website includes a notation “Konzert mit Deutschlandfunk Kultur,” implying (I believe) that it will be broadcast on said radio station. As of this writing, it is still too early to confirm this on the radio station’s site, but keep an eye out closer to the date.

Appearance at the Glyndebourne Tour: Golden Anniversary Celebration at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, December 4, 2018. Sir Thomas Allen and Sir John Tomlinson are also appearing at the concert, and the Glyndebourne website says “More performers will be announced in the coming weeks.” The program has not been announced yet but I will be surprised if Dame Sarah doesn’t reprise an aria or two from Giulio Cesare. I don’t see a way to purchase tickets online but they apparently are available by phoning the box office.

Wagner, Götterdämmerung (Waltraute) at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, April 27, May 4, and May 11, 2019. In a revival of Robert Lepage’s production of the Ring cycle, with all shows to be conducted by Philippe Jordan. Oddly, the entire cast list seems to have disappeared from the Met website, but Operabase confirms my recollection that Dame Sarah was once listed there. Dame Sarah’s co-stars in Götterdämmerung (according to notes that I took when the cast list was still on the Met site) include Christine Goerke (Brünnhilde), Stefan Vinke / Andreas Schager (sharing the role of Siegfried), Edith Haller (Gutrune), Eric Owens (Hagen), Evgeny Nitikin (Gunther), and Tomasz Konieczny (Alberich). The de-listing of the entire cast is very odd though and I would take this information with a grain of salt; perhaps there is some rejiggering going on. Update: the Metropolitan Opera announced in a tweet on August 9 that Dame Sarah will be replaced by Michaela Schuster in all performances of Götterdämmerung.

[Unconfirmed / details TBA] Handel, Agrippina at the Dutch National Opera. Hugh Canning recently tweeted the news that the Royal Opera is planning to offer Barrie Kosky’s new production of Agrippina with Joyce DiDonato in the title role; in a reply that has now been deleted, Dame Sarah mentioned that she and Alice Coote would do the same production in Amsterdam and Munich. (If you are a member of the Sarah Connolly fan group on Facebook, you can see a screenshot there.) Subsequent discussion revealed that Coote would get the Munich gig (in July 2019), so Connolly must be the Amsterdam Agrippina. The DNO has already announced its ‘18-’19 season and Agrippina isn’t in it, so presumably we’re looking towards ‘19-’20 or beyond.

Those of you in Britain may catch a performance in London, Cardiff, Leeds, Oxford, Bath, Lewes, Cheltenham, or Painswick. Those on the Continent may see her in Berlin, Madrid, Paris, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Geneva, Zeist, Baden-Baden, Vilabertran (Catalunya), or Capestang (Languedoc). Handel, Ariodante (title role) at the Wiener Staatsoper, February 24 and 26 and March 1, 4, and 8, 2018. With Chen Reiss (Ginevra), Hila Fahima (Dalinda), Christphe Dumaux (Polinesso), Rainer Trost (Lurcanio), and Wilhelm Schwinghammer (Il Re di Scozia). In a new production directed by David McVicar with music is supplied by Les Arts Florissants conducted by William Christie. Note: although Christie, LAF, and many of the soloists from this Ariodante will be performing the opera in a concert tour following its staging in Vienna, Dame Sarah is not scheduled to join them; Kate Lindsey has been announced to take over the title role for the tour.

[Broadcast] The opening night performance, February 24, is scheduled for live radio broadcast on OE1. It will also be carried live by Radio Clásica in Spain and possibly other European radio stations that I have not run across yet.

[Livestream] The opera is scheduled for video livestreaming on Sunday, March 4. There is a fee of €14 to watch the livestream.

Schubert, “Zögernd leise” in a Mothering Sunday concert at Gloucester Cathedral, March 11, 2018. With the Girl Choristers of Gloucester Cathedral; conducted by Nia Llewelyn Jones. This concert is just an hour long altogether and the one song Dame Sarah is scheduled to sing runs about five or six minutes, but it’s one of my favorite pieces I’ve heard her sing live—she’s like a storyteller in this song—and the £16 ticket price a) is pretty affordable and b) includes “a glass of pink fizz.”

Mahler, Symphony No. 8 “Symphony of a Thousand” at de Doelen, Rotterdam, March 23 and 25, 2018. With the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The other soloists are Angela Meade, Erin Wall, Erin Morley, Mihoko Fujimura, Michael Schade, Markus Werba, and Christof Fischesser. On choral duty are the Groot Omroep Koor, Rotterdam Symphony Chorus, Orfeon Donostiarra, and Nationaal Kinderkoor. UPDATE: Dame Sarah, citing illness in a tweet, withdrew from all three performances with the Rotterdam Phil and was replaced by Michelle DeYoung.

[New! Broadcast] The March 23 performance will be broadcast in live video by Medici.tv. My understanding is that the video will be available for “limited replay” to those with free accounts on the service and “unlimited replay” to those with paid accounts.

[Broadcast] I found a web page saying that all concerts at the 2018 Klarafestival can be followed live on the Klara radio station (“Tot slot zijn ook dit jaar alle concerten van Klarafestival live te volgen op radiozender Klara”); I should be able to confirm the Klara broadcast schedule closer to the time. UPDATING just slightly to add: although I can’t find a page specifically for the Mahler 8 broadcast, I can confirm that “Klara Live - Klarafestival” is appearing in the relevant slot of the program grid for March 24.

[Masterclasses] Public masterclasses for the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme at Snape Maltings in Aldeburgh, England, March 26, 27, 28, and 30. Part of a course on Handel’s Theodora to be co-taught with conductor Christian Curnyn. Although this doesn’t really count as a performance by Sarah Connolly, I am adding it to my “unofficial schedule” of her work with the thought that fans who live in the area might want to attend some of the public masterclasses Sarah Connolly will be co-teaching or the culminating performance on March 31 by young artists she will have coached.

Verdi, Requiem at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, April 28, 2018. With Elizabeth Llewellyn, Gywn Hughes Jones, Wojtek Gierlach, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The chorus will be supplied by Nottingham Trent University, where Dame Sarah was awarded an honorary doctorate of music in July of 2017.

As of this writing, the ROH is only allowing customers to purchase tickets for an entire cycle of the four operas; I’m not sure whether they’ll allow separate booking later. Curiously, two performances of Die Walküre—but none of Das Rheingold (nor of the other two operas)—are marked “Filming” on the ROH website. Do we have a Walküre webcast or DVD to look forward to? Or is Pappano gathering clips for a future documentary? I do not know.

After the jump: an unofficial schedule of Dame Sarah Connolly’s future performances. Those of you in Britain may catch a performance in London, Oxford, Worcester, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Buxton, Deal, or Lewes. Those on the Continent may see her in Berlin, Vienna, Brussels, Barcelona, Rotterdam, Stuttgart, Bordeaux, Vilabertran (near Figueres, Catalunya), or La Foce (Siena). Plus, Dame Sarah’s agency has mentioned future performances in Paris, Madrid, and New York, though no details are available yet. Don’t live near one of these places? Take in a concert from afar: I am adding online broadcast and livestream details as they become available.

Some of these listings are not yet officially confirmed; you should of course check official sources before making plans and be aware that cast changes and cancellations can happen at any time.

Brett Dean, Hamlet (Gertrude) at Glyndebourne, last performance on July 6, 2017. Also starring Allan Clayton (Hamlet), Barbara Hannigan (Ophelia), Rod Gilfry (Claudius), Kim Begley (Polonius), and John Tomlinson (Ghost of Old Hamlet). With the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski.

[Livestream] The July 6 performance of Hamlet is scheduled for livestreaming to cinemas and online; the online stream will be free to watch and will remain online for a week. The streaming of the first part of the performance will be delayed about an hour in order to avoid imposing Glyndebourne’s traditional 90-minute “long interval” on online and cinema audiences; the second part will be relayed live or with minimal delay, according to my understanding. Hat tip to Avis Melodia for mentioning the livestream in the Sarah Connolly fan group on Facebook.

Recital at the Deal Festival, St George’s Church, Deal, Kent, July 8, 2017. With Joseph Middleton in a program titled “Love and Life.” Update: although Dame Sarah’s recital is still listed on the festival website as of this writing, the Astor Community Theatre has announced that she has withdrawn from the festival on advice of her doctor. Ruby Hughes will appear in recital with Joseph Middleton instead. Update update: although the recital date has come and gone, I want to note that I belatedly found an announcement about Dame Sarah’s withdrawal and Hughes’ substitution on the Deal Festival website.

Wagner, Das Rheingold (Fricka) at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusets, July 15, 2017. Update: as of July 4, Dame Sarah has been replaced by Stephanie Blythe in the role of Fricka. The BSO site has been updated to read, “Due to ill health, and on the advice of her doctor, Dame Sarah Connolly regretfully has had to withdraw from the BSO's performance of Das Rheingold.” Operawire took note of the withdrawal and WBUR has published a short interview with Blythe about her stepping in. In a concert performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons. Also starring Thomas J. Mayer (Wotan), Kim Begley (Loge), David Cangelosi (Mime), Jochen Schmeckenbecker (Alberich), Morris Robinson (Fasolt), Ain Anger (Fafner), Malin Christensson (Freia), Jacqueline Echols (Woglinde), Catherine Martin (Wellgunde), Renée Tatum (Flosshilde), Patricia Bardon (Erda), David Butt Philip (Froh), and Ryan McKinney (Donner).

Recital at the Buxton Festival, Buxton, July 22, 2017. Update: Dame Sarah is no longer listed on the Buxton program; she seems to have been replaced by Sir Thomas Allen, who will be performing in recital with Joseph Middleton.

Solo performance in a fundraising concert for Common and Kind, Union Chapel, Islington, London, July 25, 2017. Update: Common and Kind has tweeted that “Sarah Connolly has a bruised cord and is unable to sing indefinitely,” which I take to mean that she has withdrawn from this performance.

Torsten Rasch, A Welsh Night at the Three Choirs Festival, Worcester, July 26, 2017. Update: Susan Bickley’s name now appears on the Three Choirs website in place of Dame Sarah’s. In a concert with Strauss’s Metamorphosen and Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass. Conducted by Frank Beermann. A newly orchestrated version of Rasch’s song sequence A Welsh Night will be premiered at the 2017 Three Choirs Festival; Sarah Connolly performed the original version for mezzo-soprano and piano with Joseph Middleton at their 2015 Three Choirs recital.

Recital at the Schubertíada Vilabertran, Vilabertran (near Figueres), Catalunya, August 24, 2017. With Malcolm Martineau. Songs by Strauss, Zemlinsky, Eisler, Korngold, Copland, and Britten. Broadcast possibility: many recitals from the 2015 Schubertíada Vilabertran, where Connolly made her festival debut, were broadcast either live or deferred on Catalunya Música. There is a PDF on the CatMúsica website showing this recital on the schedule of summer festival recordings being made by the radio station, but it does not give an air date; the recital does not appear on this PDF schedule of broadcasts for July and August. We’ll have to keep an eye out for it in the coming months.

This recital program perfectly fits the festival’s theme for 2017, “The Last of the Romantics—Mahler and Fin-de-Siècle Vienna.”

Although this doesn’t really count as a performance by Sarah Connolly, I am adding it to my “unofficial schedule” of her work with the thought that fans who live in the area might want to attend some of the public masterclasses Sarah Connolly will be teaching or the culminating performance by young artists she will have coached. (Note that the first weekend of this program clashes with the Mahler 8 concerts in Rotterdam, above; it is possible the students will start out working with Christian Curnyn and will pick up with Sarah Connolly a few days into the program.)

[New! Deferred broadcast TBC] Dame Sarah’s recital at Spivey Hall in March 2017 was recorded for deferred broadcast. I have found a schedule for the program “Spivey Soiree” indicating that Dame Sarah’s recital will be broadcast on October 31, 2017, at 10:05 p.m. local time on WABE in Atlanta. The document is not deep-linkable but you might be able to find it by going to the Audio-Video Club of Atlanta website and clicking on the button for “Spivey Soiree.” The information on this document does not quite align with the weekly scheduling information currently published on the WABE website so I will attempt to confirm that the Spivey Soiree schedule on the A-VCOA website is accurate when we get closer to the broadcast date.

Handel, Giulio Cesare (title role) at Glyndebourne, June 10 through July 28, 2018. In a revival of the 2005 production by David McVicar, with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment conducted by William Christie. With Joélle Harvey as Cleopatra, plus Christophe Dumaux and Patricia Bardon reprising the roles of Tolomeo and Cornelia respectively.

Upcoming performances by Sarah Connolly

After the jump: an unofficial schedule of Sarah Connolly’s future performances. Those of you in Britain may catch a performance in London, Brighton, Oxford, Worcester, Buxton, Deal, Lewes, or Effingham (Surrey). Those on the Continent may see her in Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Brussels, Barcelona, Rotterdam, Schwarzenberg, Vilabertran (near Figueres, Catalunya), or Città della Pieve (in the province of Perugia). Those of us on this side of the Atlantic can look forward to concert dates in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Lenox, Massachusetts. Plus! I am adding online broadcast details as they become available.

This is not an authoritative list. These are the upcoming performances by Sarah Connolly that I have been able to learn about from Connolly's website (not currently being updated), her agent's website (Askonas Holt), Operabase, Connolly's Twitter, and generally ferreting around the web.

Some of these listings are not yet officially confirmed; you should of course check official sources before making plans and be aware that cast changes and cancellations can happen at any time.

Berlioz, Les nuits d’été with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at the Southbank Centre, London, February 20, 2017. Part of a Berlioz and Mendelssohn concert—formerly headlined “Sarah Connolly’s Berlioz,” now “Sarah Connolly’s Nights of Summer”—directed by Kati Debretzeni.

Rossini, Stabat Mater at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris, March 2, 2017. Also starring Patricia Ciofi, Paolo Fanale, and Nahuel di Pierro. With the Orchestre National de France and the Chœur de Radio France conducted by James Gaffigan. Also on the program: Schubert’s Symphony No. 3. Update: although the TCE website still lists Connolly’s name as one of the soloists, the website for the orchestra (which is presumably responsible for the casting) has changed to list Varduhi Abrahamyan as the mezzo soloist.

[New details! Broadcast] This concert is scheduled for live broadcast on France Musique. France Musique keeps most but not all of their broadcasts online for catch-up listening for a few weeks after the original transmission; I can’t promise that this program will be available after the initial broadcast but it seems not unlikely.

[New details!] Recital at the Holywell Music Room, Oxford, March 6, 2016. Part of Connolly’s service as Oriel College's Visiting Musician for the 2016-17 academic year. Although the Oriel website does not mention Connolly’s accompanist nor the repertoire chosen for the recital, it would appear from Joseph Middleton’s website that the two of them will be performing the same works by Schumann, Mahler, Poulenc, Copland, and Richard Rodney Bennett programmed for their US tour (see the next three entries).

Recital at Spivey Hall, Clayton State University, Atlanta, March 11, 2017. With Joseph Middleton. Works by Schumann, Mahler, Poulenc, Copland, and Richard Rodney Bennett. Broadcast possibility: many of the performances at Spivey Hall are recorded for deferred broadcast.

Recitals at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, March 15 and 17, 2017. With Joseph Middleton. The Armory website does not mention the repertoire, but presumably the recital program on both nights will be the same as Connolly and Middleton are performing together in Atlanta (above) and San Francisco (below). After-the-fact UPDATE: Berlioz’ Les nuits d’été was substituted for the Mahler Rückert-lieder in the New York performances (I don’t know why, but maybe the venue asked for something different).

Recital at the Herbst Theatre, San Francisco, March 23, 2017. With Joseph Middleton. Songs by Schumann, Mahler, Poulenc, Copland, and Richard Rodney Bennett. Special note: according to the San Francisco Performances season brochure (PDF link), this concert is available for sponsorship by a Concert Partner. For a donation of $750 or more, a Concert Partner receives benefits including tickets to the performance and an opportunity to meet the artist.

Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago, March 30, March 31, and April 1, 2017. With Stephen Gould [edited after the fact: Gould withdrew from the second and third performances due to illness and was replaced by Richard Cox]. Bernard Haitink James Conlon [PDF] conducts. In a program also containing Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (previously listed as Haydn’s Symphony No. 60).

Mahler, Symphony No. 8 “Symphony of a thousand” with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, London, April 8, 2017. With Melanie Diener Judith Howarth, Anne Schwanewilms, Sofia Fomina, Patricia Bardon, Torsten Kerl Barry Banks, Matthias Goerne Stephen Gadd, Matthew Rose, the London Philharmonic Choir, and the Tiffin Boys’ Choir. Conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. UPDATE: As of April 6, Sarah Connolly has been replaced by Michaela Selinger.

[New details] Recital at Wigmore Hall, London, April 10, 2017. With Joseph Middleton. The recently-updated program features works by John Ireland, Frank Bridge, Gustav Holst, Benjamin Britten, and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett along with the first London performance of the Torsten Rasch song cycle A Welsh Night that Connolly and Middleton premiered at the Three Choirs Festival in 2015. In A Welsh Night, Rasch sets a collection of poems by the Welsh poet Alun Lewis; an orchestrated version of the songs will be premiered at the 2017 Three Choirs Festival, again with Connolly as the vocalist (see concert details below). UPDATE: As of April 7, Wigmore Hall has announced that Kitty Whately will step in for Sarah Connolly on Monday afternoon. As of this writing, the program details have been erased from the Wigmore website; presumably changes will be made, especially since the Rasch songs were written for Sarah Connolly and would not be in any other singer’s repertoire yet.

[Broadcast] As part of the BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts series, this recital will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

Per segon any consecutiu es celebrarà a L’Auditori de Barcelona, la Schubertíada, que després de l’èxit assolit l’any passat, en aquesta edició presenta 4 sessions que es celebraran el proper 21 d’octubre, el 4 de desembre, el 17 de febrer i el 28 de març.

El cicle barceloní de la Schubertíada, integrat en la programació de L’Auditori, a diferència del prestigiosa proposta estiuenca a Vilabertran on es congreguen grans veus consagrades alternant amb altres que inicien o es consagren allà, ofereix l’oportunitat d’escoltar per primera vegada a joves intèrprets, ben preparats i acompanyats per pianistes de prestigi, que de ben segur no trigaran a ser noms habituals als millors teatres i sales de concert.

Tots els concerts estaran integrats per lieder de Franz Schubert, es celebraran a la magnífica i adient sala Oriol Martorell de L’Auditori de Barcelona. El concerts de diumenge seran a les 7 de la tarda i entre setmana a les 8 del vespre. El preu es de 20€ i 10€.
