DFB has suspended three friendly games against the Chinese U20. This step is not only a harsh blow to the association but also a clear sign what protesting can achieve.

90 minutes - plus interruption - that’s how long the flying visit of China’s Olympic team to the German pitches of Regionalliga Südwest has lasted so far. And it must be assumed that there won’t be much added time. Because DFB has suspended the upcoming three friendlies in Frankfurt, Sinsheim and Worms. Presumably to be taken up again in 2018. The reason: A lack of support. „To the regret of every side involved the project didn’t receive the expected wide support“, DFB writes in their statement. You don’t say, one wants to shout, give me a break. What a surprise! No, that the series of friendlies wouldn’t be met with much love, that much was clear to anybody who asked around in the past months in Regionalliga Südwest. Only DFB didn’t want to know and wouldn’t listen. A meeting with fan representatives this month was cancelled by the association at short notice, the given reason being that neutral journalists weren’t acceptable watchers. DFB missed their chance at talks with the involved parties. The fact that the friendly games have now been suspended, however, has less to do with the lack of support and more with the kind of protest. Because Tibetan protesters raised their flag during the first match in Mainz, the Chinese players refused to continue with the game. Fans of many clubs in the coming weeks were expected to copy the idea, causing further interruptions and cancellations of games. DFB[’s statement] says there were „substantial hints at further escalations“. That’s annoying, almost dramatically so, because so far nothing’s escalated. Quite the opposite: It was a silent protest, that was widely noticed all the more. The incident shows that protesting still works in German football. Especially when it’s peaceful. The escalation was caused by the Chinese team when they refused to play on. By this wording DFB takes on the narrative, the wrong interpretation, of the Chinese representatives. There are losers on all sides. 40 Chinese footballers who have trained for weeks thousands of kilometers away from home are now departing unseen. And in case the tests should be - as is already starting to show - not just suspended, but cancelled entirely the clubs won’t receive the promised 7.500 Euros starting bonus. Money that some of them had already counted on. In any case with the plan and the uniquely stubborn way it was carried out without the involvement of fans and clubs DFB has thoroughly embarrassed themselves.

Zum Bedauern aller beteiligten Parteien hat das Projekt nicht die erwartete breite Zustimmung erhalten. Tatsächlich wurde das Projekt von einigen wenigen Zuschauern genutzt, um Botschaften zu setzen, die von den der chinesischen Mannschaft, den Offiziellen, dem Betreuerstab des Chinesischen Fußball-Verbandes und auch den chinesischen Zuschauern als verletzend empfunden wurden.

Das muss ja extrem überraschend gewesen sein, das mit der ausbleibenden breiten Zustimmung. Und diese verletzenden Tibet-Flaggen. Furcht-bar!
