I hate this "pandas have to be shown how to breed because they are so dumb" stereotype. Please tell it to Yang Yang and Long Hui of the Viennese Zoo. Since 2003 they had 5 offspring, all born quite regulary (it takes two years to wean a cub).

Years ago I've read an article about how pandas like or dislike other pandas. This is not just because they mostly live solitary and only meet up for mating. They will not mate with a panda they dislike and scientists hope to find out what factors into that to offer pandas mates they are more likely to like.

I keep seeing people say that pandas are a worthless species and that we're wasting time/resources trying to preserve them just because they're cute and we should just let them go extinct. Is this true?

well, here's the thing- there's no such thing as a "worthless species" to begin with, because worth is not defined by usefulness to one specific species of uppity bipedal primates, and also! finding one really charismatic species and getting people to care about it enough to protect it is GREAT, actually!

because protecting pandas?

also means protecting literally every other living creature in this ecosystem:

and there is. LOTS of those.

thus, pandas act as a huge furry-and-adorable umbrella to every other animal that shares their habitat, shielding them from the terrible metaphorical rainstorm of habitat loss and human encroachment through the power of being just really, REALLY cute.

every environment on earth needs a panda umbrella species if we want to protect it in the age of extinction. what will it be for yours?

Abu ist im Vorjahr wieder in seinen Geburtszoo zurückgekehrt. 2006 musste er diesen verlassen, nachdem er einen Pfleger getötet hatte. Das Junge soll Elefantenkuh „Numbi“ in einem Jahr gebären.

Erfreuliche Nachrichten gibt es aus dem Tiergarten Schönbrunn. Erstmals seit über 20 Jahren ist wieder eine Elefantenkuh nach einer natürlichen Paarung trächtig. „Numbi“, so der Name der Elefantendame, habe sich von Anfang an gut mit „Abu“ verstanden, dem 23-jährigen Bullen, der im Mai 2023 zum Zweck der Zucht aus dem Zoo Halle nach Schönbrunn zurückgekehrt ist, hieß es am Freitag seitens des Tiergartens.

„Abu“ musste den Wiener Zoo, in dem er geboren wurde, verlassen, nachdem er 2005 einen 39-jährigen Pfleger bei der Morgenroutine getötet hatte. 2006 übersiedelte er mit seiner Mutter Sabi in den Zoo Halle. Nun soll er in Schönbrunn für Nachwuchs sorgen. Von „Abu“ gehe keine Gefahr mehr für die Tierpflegerinnen und -pfleger aus: „Es gibt keinen persönlichen Kontakt zu dem Tier, es ist immer eine Barriere dazwischen.“

I saw a similar poll about America and now I’m curious. There is no correct answer btw this is purely about headcanons.

Obligatory commentary to the options because I can't not elaborate:

1) A classic, the capitol of his country. Probably some fancy Altbauwohnung in the inner city.

2) Capitol of Salzburg and best known for Mozart and The Sound of Music.

3) I always think of Schloss Schönbrunn (the one with the zoo) or Schloss Hof (underrated but so pretty) kind of style.

4) Capitol of Burgenland, self-proclaimed smallest metropolis in the world, and very close to Hungary.
