On September 11th, 2001 at 09:42am EST, in order to protect the United States from more terrorist attacks, the US government initiates SCATANA (Security Control of Air Traffic and Air Navigation Aids). All domestic flights were grounded, and US airspace was closed to international civil air traffic. Unfortunately, 240 international flights destined for the United States were already beyond the point of no return. Only one country was within range of those flights to divert to: Canada. At 09:45am, in cooperation with our US neighbours and allies, Canada commences Operation Yellow Ribbon in order to safely land all 240 international flights.
