WEEKEND ARTINGS: Clearwater Jazz Holiday, Ybor Arts Tour, Fall Fests and more
There's so much stuff happening this weekend, I almost don't know where to begin. But visual art is kind of my brand, so let's start there.
My weekend begins early, on a Thursday, with the Second Annual Ybor Arts Tour. I had a blast on the inaugural art tour last year, which took me to the historic Ybor City Kress Building, The Bricks, and HCC Ybor, all of which I plan to revisit this year. There's so much going on at this year's Ybor Arts Tour, it could be its own blog, but instead I'm going to refer you to Christopher Curry's fantastic preview in 83 Degrees. HCC Ybor City Campus, Performing Arts building, Tampa. Thurs. Oct. 19, 5-9 p.m.
Clearwater Jazz Holiday starts Thursday with a performance from The Beach Boys. The Sound, Coachman Park, Clearwater. Thurs.-Sun. Oct. 19-22.

The Florida Botanical Gardens incorporates art into its annual Pumpkin Fest with pumpkin carving, a scarecrow-making contest, and arts and crafts activities in the neighboring Creative Pinellas Galleries. Florida Botanical Gardens, Largo. Sat. Oct. 21, 12-4 p.m.

Every once in a while, an opportunity comes along out of nowhere that can only be described as dream come true. So when I asked if I would be interested in collaborating with @comic_legend_bob_layton , it almost didn’t seem to be real. Only it was. What transpired was a series of paintings which celebrate Bob’s contribution to IRON MAN. These paintings along with a select number of Bob’s own original art will be on display August 1st, 2nd and 3rd at @scarfonehartley_gallery with an opening reception August 1st 6-8pm (at Scarfone/Hartley Gallery at the University of Tampa) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgmo1C8Oz8x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When I went to the Tampa Museum of art in October, I saw the Black Mary by Andres Serrano. It was a Print of a figuring of the Virgin Mary submerged in Serrano’s own urine.  At first glance it doesn’t look like what it really is. When I first saw it, I believed it was some sort of figure with back lighting, surrounded by tiny lights.  after I read the description I was in awe.I believe the concept is very interesting and the fact that a material that would normally be considered to be very gross of vulgar can be used in such a beautiful way in amazing. The piece may seem very simple, but a closer look reveals much meaning and in a creative way. I really appreciate this piece as I can really relate to the artists and his upbringing with Catholicism

This Artwork, Obversion by Nicola Verlato, was featured in the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery during September 2019. It is a large oil painting on canvas that was made in 2016. The piece uses realism, but it feels quite surreal. The mix of a very traditional painting style with modern themes is especially intriguing.
The piece mirrors the art of very historical paintings with its hyper realistic body proportions and shading but the content of the image is opposite to that. the image features a naked man, wearing only a bright green dinosaur head and sneakers, who is skateboarding. I feel like the absurdity of the image and its unique perspective really draw me into it.

The artwork, Colorblind Shooting Range, as well as Shooting Range Target, by Nneka Jones are mixed media paintings that were featured in the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery in December. While Ill mostly be talking about Colorblind Shooting Range, both pieces are very interesting and packed with meaning. They feature Small black girls surrounded by horrifying imagery and with a target painted onto their faces.
I believe the artwork was meant to create discussion and discomfort, and for good reason. At first when I saw the painting, hadn’t noticed, but the circles in the background are condoms. It took me by surprise as
I honestly wasn’t expecting it but, it really helps further enforce the message of violence and assault.  The smaller painting does this as well with the hanging red threads which mimic dripping blood.

The University of Tampa’s Scarfone/Hartley Gallery is currently showing the creatively displayed B.A.S.K.: Because Art Should Kill, work by Aleš Bask Hostomsky aka BASK. The exhibition also allows visitors a chance to participate by adding their own marks to a wall in the show.
From the gallery-
Known for his iconomorphic revisitation of contemporary images, BASK’s work highlights the transformative ability of hybridization. Offering layered deconstruction and reconstruction, each piece pushes viewers to look anew at culturally infused images and text, in order to consider what they say about the viewer and the culture that developed them.
BASK’s bricolage style takes the known and familiar, the distressed and destroyed, and merges them to create windows through which visitors can explore places of unanchored interpretations and ask a multitude of questions of the piece and of their interpretations.
This exhibition closes 12/15/23.

This is the last week to check out the Art+Design Faculty Exhibition at University of Tampa’s art gallery, Scarfone Hartley. It’s a wonderful chance to check out the talent that is teaching at the school as well as some impressive work.
Artists included: Jaime Aelavanthara, Peter Cotroneo, Molly Evans, Kendra Frorup, Corey George, Jennifer Guest, Joshua Haddad, Ry McCullough, Samantha Modder, Alexander Nixon, Eric Ondina, Angelina Parrino, Emma Quintana, Joseph Scarce, and Chris Valle.
Below are more selections from the exhibition-
Tumblr media
AI, artist Emma Quintana, and artist/ developer Rick Hanberry- Sapience, Artificial intelligence that is constantly adapting and learning, mirror, webcam, electronics
"The mirror interface of Sapience is a real-time Al facial and emotional translator that uses inferred data from a participant's face to construct a prompt for OpenAI's GPT-3 text synthesis AI. GPT-3 then displays remarks on the reflection of the participant that have been synthesized and the machine attempts to understand and respond to the emotions and personal details of the participant. Sapience points to the inherent ethical issues that the use and integration of AI pose within the already varied spheres it has been integrated into. The accuracy and reliability of such systems can vary significantly and it is important to be aware of the limitations and potential biases of any technology used for these purposes. It is also important to consider the ethical and privacy implications of using such systems, and to ensure that they are used responsibly and transparently.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joseph Scarce- Hinge on Disaster, Water mixable oil paint, mixed media, photos, and wooden stars on wood panel
"Scarce’s artwork reflects his connection to the community through disaster art therapy response. He brings attention to the struggles and challenges related to recovering from a disaster and the effect on the impacted natural surroundings. This artwork entices us, the viewer, to acknowledge how we can make a difference in sending hope to those devastated by disaster. The Hinge on Disaster encourages the viewer to open the window to view the devastation and the healing after Hurricane Ian."
Tumblr media
Jaime Aelavanthara and Amanda Sieradzki- Redbloom, Photographs printed on crepe georgette
"Jaime Aelavanthara and Amanda Sieradzki's multidisciplinary project Redbloom examines the fragile ecosystem of Florida's shoreline. Printed on sheer fabric, the photographs feature choreography by UT Dance professor, Amanda Sieradzki drawn from research on the red tide's effects on animal life. The human form moves through space, alongside Marine plant elements, such as sea grass and kelp, to suggest both the natural beauty of the Gulf Coast, as well as its susceptibility to toxic algae blooms and red tide. Redbloom ultimately explores how choreography and photography merge, emphasizing the human connection to these pressing water issues in the Tampa Bay region and beyond."
This exhibition closes 2/24/23.
