Brendan Eder Ensemble - Therapy - the premise "what would Richard D. James do with a chamber ensemble and a church organ?" yields an utterly transcendent album
Brendan Eder is a Los Angeles composer and drummer best-known for his eponymous genre-bending ensemble of woodwinds, drumset, and bass; as well as his film scoring work, most notably on four short films for director Ari Aster. On March 3, 2023 Eder releases his third album, Therapy: a collection of meditative woodwind arrangements recorded primarily at Church of the Good Shepherd in Arcadia, California. Following 2021’s Cape Cod Cottage — Eder’s concept album under the guise of Edward Blankman, a retired dentist in the 1970s, which added elegant, understated jazz to the ensembles' repertoire — on Therapy, Eder drops the alter ego and the drumset (almost entirely) and begins with a new directive: What would ambient mastermind Richard D. James do with a chamber ensemble and a church organ? It was a question Eder had started to ask in 2020 with his cover of “#20 (Lichen).” Listeners responded with over one million streams. Appropriately, Therapy delivers two new Aphex Twin arrangements alongside eight original pieces. The result is a distinctive take on New Age and ambient music subtly interwoven with Eder’s affinity for 20th century classical and jazz. Maintaining his track record of recording the best musicians Eder can find, Therapy features special guests Nailah Hunter (harp), Henry Solomon (saxophone), and Ethan Haman on The Newberry Memorial Organ at Yale University. - Rebeca Arango  Written and Produced by Brendan Eder* Christine Tavolacci - flute, piccolo flute Henry Solomon - alto sax Amber Wyman - bassoon Andrew Conrad - Bb and bass clarinet (2, 4-7) Sérgio Coelho - Bb and bass clarinet (1, 3, 8, 9) Eric McCann - electric bass (1-3, 6, 8) Brendan Eder - keyboards and percussion (2, 4-6, 8-10) Leah Paul - flute (1, 9) Ethan Haman - organ (3) Nailah Hunter - harp (4) Logan Kane - upright bass (10) Marissa Honda - english horn (10) Recorded at Church of the Good Shepherd, Arcadia, CA** Engineered by Brendan Eder Assistant Engineering by Eric McCann Mixed by Brendan Eder Mastered by Chris Sorem Album Art by Adam Rabinowitz Album Design by Maziyar Pahlevan *#3 (Rhubarb) and #17 written by Richard D James (BMG Blue) **Organ on “Ending” recorded on The Newberry Memorial Organ, Yale University, New Haven, MA.

National Palace of Mafra
Tumblr media
The National Palace of Mafra is located in the municipality of Mafra, in the district of Lisbon, in Portugal, about 25 kilometers from Lisbon. It consists of a monumental palace and monastery in the Johannine Baroque style, on the German side. Its construction work began in 1717 at the initiative of King D. João V, due to a promise he had made in the name of the descendants that he would obtain from Queen D. Ana Ana of Austria.
History
Due to real will, the initial project of a convent for 13 brothers was successively extended to 40, 80 and finally 300 brothers, a Basilica and a Royal Palace. However, at the date of the consecration of the Basilica, October 22nd, 1730, only the foundations of what would become the Palace were opened, which only began to be built in the following years, and was concluded near 1735. The life of Corte in the Mafra Palace at the time of D. João V
Tumblr media
was relatively scarce, since the King became seriously ill in 1742 and died in 1750.
His son D. José I
Tumblr media
maintained the habit of coming to Mafra, almost always to hunt in Tapada. But, since the 1755 earthquake he did not like to live in stone buildings, the entire Royal Family was installed in a tent built next to the Palace.
In the reign of D. Maria I,
Tumblr media
the court's visits to Mafra were linked to the celebration of religious festivals or to the taste that the Queen had for horseback riding in Tapada, a habit she maintained until she became ill in 1792.
Originally decorated with Flemish tapestries, oriental rugs, the Palace will undergo a profound modification at the will of D. João VI,
Tumblr media
still Prince Regent, who commissioned Cyrillo Volkmar Machado
Tumblr media
to carry out a mural decoration campaign in several rooms.
Here the entire Court settled in 1806/1807, in the troubled time that preceded the French Invasions. The need to make the large spaces of the Palace more habitable led to the division of some of the large spaces into smaller rooms, divided by wooden panels of Brazil "richly painted".
The departure of the Royal Family for Brazil, on November 27th, 1807, days before the arrival of the French troops in Lisbon, resulted in the impoverishment of much of the Palace filling, transported to the colony for the service of the Royal House and there having been left when the Court returned to Portugal in June 1821.
In December 1807, the French troops took up residence in the Palace and, a few months later, were replaced by a small fraction of the English army that remained here until March 1828.
After the troubled period of Liberal Struggles, in the reign of D. Maria II,
Tumblr media
the Court resumed the habit of returning to Mafra. Her husband, D. Fernando,
Tumblr media
a true pioneer in the defense of national heritage, carried out several recovery works at the Real Edifício.
D. Pedro V
Tumblr media
also came with his wife, Queen D. Estefânia de Hoenzollern-Sigmaringen,
Tumblr media
to spend some seasons in Mafra. In this Palace, this king founded a Royal School with his name, for public instruction, supported by his pocket.
D. Luís I,
Tumblr media
king since 1861, after the death of his brother, maintained the real protection of the School created by his brother, also coming frequently to attend the exams, often accompanied by Queen D. Maria Pia de Sabóia.
Tumblr media
For a stay in his brother's Mafra, King Humberto of Italy, he ordered the queen to install, between the ground floor and the noble floor, an elevator operated by four men, which the palace people called shuttle or crab. This will have been one of the first elevators in our country.
Also D. Carlos
Tumblr media
and D. Amélia,
Tumblr media
great connoisseurs of hunting, here made frequent stays traveling the Tapada after deer and wild boar or painting, hobby that both were dedicated to.
The Mafra Palace is also associated with the end of the monarchy in Portugal, as it welcomed King D. Manuel II
Tumblr media
on the last night he spent in the kingdom before he left for exile.
Room
Diana's room
Tumblr media
The designation is due to the ceiling painting that represents Diana, the goddess of the hunt, accompanied by nymphs and satyrs. Designed by Cirilo Volkmar Machado (1748-1823), it is part of the decorative campaign carried out since 1796 by order of the then Prince Regent, future King D. João VI. The painter was inspired by a painting by Domenichino, entitled "Hunt for Diana", existing in the Borghese Gallery in Rome. The painting on the north wall, the door ajar in trompe-l'-oeil, represents the same goddess, also known as Selene, the goddess of the Moon, and Endimião, the shepherd with whom she fell in love.
Throne room
Tumblr media
Intended for royal audiences. The ceiling painting represents an allegory to "Lusitânia" and is part of the decorative campaign that Cirilo Volkmar Machado executed in the Palace from 1796 on behalf of the Prince Regent, future King D. João VI. Walls decorated with fresco paintings representing the eight Royal Virtues, by Domingos Sequeira (1768-1837).
Tumblr media
North Tower
Tumblr media
The King's private quarters, used until the death of D. Fernando de Saxe-Cobourgo (1816/1885), husband of Queen D. Maria II, later being reserved for important guests visiting Mafra. Each of the Paço Real turrets, north and south, functioned as an independent apartment with its kitchens in the basement, the pantries and ucharias on the ground floor, the Camaristas rooms on the 1st floor, the King's rooms on this floor and the servants in the mezzanines (attics).
Tumblr media
Main Gallery
Tumblr media
One of the largest palace corridors in Europe, measuring 232 m from one end to the other, connects the North Tower, the King's rooms, to the Queen's rooms in the South Tower.
Discovery Room
Tumblr media
The ceiling painting, by Cirilo Volkmar Machado, represents the achievements of the Portuguese overseas, like Vasco da Gama overcoming Adamastor, Pedro Álvares Cabral, discoverer of Brazil, Cristóvão Colombo, discoverer of America and a portrait of Infante D. Henrique. The walls were decorated with paintings representing the exploits of the Castros, Albuquerques, Almeidas and Mascarenhas in India. These paintings went with King D. João VI to Brazil and did not return.
Destinations Room
Tumblr media
On the ceiling, designed by Cirilo Volkmar Machado, the "Temple of Destination" is depicted, highlighting the figure of Providence that gives D. Afonso Henriques the Book of the Destinations of the Fatherland. All around, besides Hugo Capeto king of France and count D. Henrique de Borgonha, father of D. Afonso Henriques, all Portuguese monarchs up to D. João IV are represented.
Guard Room
Tumblr media
Here the entrance to the Palace was made and the Royal Guard - which gives the name to this room - remained when the Royal Family was in Mafra.
The painting on the ceiling, by Cirilo Volkmar Machado, represents "The Precipice of Phaeton", a mythological character who, having obtained from his father Hélios the car with which he illuminated the world, losing control of the horses, endangered the Earth and the Sky Zeus, guardian of the order of the Universe, struck him with his lightning and threw him into the river Erídano.
Blessing Room
Tumblr media
This room is the central point of the main facade that opens on the square and the Basilica. From these balconies the Royal Family could attend religious ceremonies and, from the veranda that opens over the Terreiro, D. João V appeared to the people.
The Mafra Palace was the main building school of the 18th century in Portugal. Here they learned and worked not only engineers and architects, but specialized workers - stone carvers, joiners, glaziers and even sculptors. For this Real Work, machines and cranes were invented that lifted large blocks of stone that sometimes required the simultaneous use of 30 or even 50 joints of oxen. It was this great constructive experience that allowed the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The stone used is from the region of Sintra and Pero Pinheiro, such as Amarelo de Negrais, Encarnadão “Chainette” and St. Florien Rose from Lameiras, Terrugem parish, Liós Azulino, from Maceira, Montelavar parish or Mem Martins' Negro.
South Tower
Tumblr media
Queen's private rooms. Her Majesty's Bed Room The mural decoration was carried out during the 1855/58 construction campaign, on the occasion of the accession to the throne of D. Pedro V and his marriage to D. Estefânia de Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was in this Torreão room that King D. Manuel II spent the last night in Portugal, before his departure for exile, when the Republic was implanted on October 5th, 1910.
Southern Oratory
Tumblr media
Private chapel in the Torreão Sul rooms, originally intended for the queen. Ceiling painting by Cirilo Volkmar Machado, ordered by the Prince Regent D. João (future king D. João VI) and his wife, D. Carlota Joaquina, at the end of the 18th century. Represents S. João Baptista, S. Carlos Borromeu and Sto. António prostrated before the Holy Trinity asking for descendants to the throne.
D. Pedro V's room
Tumblr media
The present division and decoration reflects the romantic experience of the 19th century and dates from the works campaign carried out in this Palace when D. Pedro V ascended the throne in 1855 and his marriage to D. Estefânia de Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in 1858. It was also known as the Red Room or the Waiting Room, as guests waited here before being announced by the curtain wall to be received by the Royal Family in the Music Room.
Music Room
Tumblr media
Also known as the Yellow Room or the Reception Room. The Royal Family received its guests here, replacing the Audience Room (at Torreão Norte) after D. Pedro V abolished the traditional royal hand-kiss on festive dates.
Playroom
Tumblr media
Here are some games used in the 18th and 19th centuries, such as Chinese Billiards, the pool table or "Russiana" and the game of Spinning Top.
Hunting Room
Tumblr media
The Mafra Palace was visited regularly by the Royal Family who came here several times a year, usually to hunt in Tapada. All the furniture and decoration in this room is allusive to this taste of kings.
Dining room
Tumblr media
Late 19th century dining house. The table and chairs were made at the Lisbon Penitentiary and offered to King D. Carlos.
Great Hall of the Friars
Tumblr media
Recreation of the conventual space made with the original furniture from the 18th century, since the convent was ceded to the Army since 1841. An oval table with benches that belonged to one of the Brotherhoods established by D. João V in Mafra and a lamp stand out century Dark House in wood, so called because it is used in Holy Week ceremonies.
Tumblr media
Friar Cell
Recreation of a friar's cell in the convent, with its 18th century furniture.
Tumblr media
Library
Tumblr media
The Monastic-Royal Library of the National Palace of Mafra is one of the most important European libraries, with a valuable collection of c. of 36,000 volumes, an “ex libris” of the enlightened illustration of the century. XVIII.
Of note are some rare works such as the collection of incunabula (works printed until 1500) or the famous “Chronicle of Nuremberg” (1493), as well as several Bibles or the first Encyclopedia (known as by Diderot et D'Alembert), the Books of Illuminated hours of the 15th century and also an important nucleus of musical scores by Portuguese and foreign authors, such as Marcos Portugal, J. de Sousa, João José Baldi, among others, specially written for the group of the six historical organs of the Basilica.

Top 50 Albums of 2019
1.  Grace Ives - 2nd
Slamming, kicking, pasting, tanning, beautifying, punching you in the gut.  No songs over 3 minutes, short-terse-dancy songs that fucking bang due to sheer bedroom anthemic production.  So wry and glib but intelligent and sensitive and adorable.
2.  Faye Webster - Atlanta Millionnaires Club
Best ever breakup album of the year! Of all time.  Lovely, lovely, lovely vocals.
3.   Sharon Van Etten - Remind me Tomorrow
So sweet and intelligent, each song a captivating masterpiece.  I love her voice, which has a sadness and depth to it but her lyrics make you stop what you’re doing and pay attention.  Stunning album.
4.  Cate le Bon - Reward
Genius lyricist possibly in the way of Joni Mitchell’s wit, beauty and sarcasm!!  I love her voice and her guitars.
5.  Julia Jacklin - Crushing
Each song is like a novel, increasingly revelatory and suspense-filled, but also lovely vocally and totally immersive.
6.  Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
This is the hardest review of the year to write and still i am wavering.
7.  Big Thief - U.F.O.F
8.   Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
Another Joni-alike in the way of Cate le Bon, but also, adding this unique, acerbic analysis on subjects like ageing, improving yourself, gaining knowledge - subjects that interest me.
9.   Sneaks - Highway Hypnosis
Such good rave music, but with wit and intelligence in the lyrics.  Metallic and cool synth sounds with great warmth to her post-punk-spoken word-soul-disco-r&b vocals similar to ESG.  Gutted I missed her play Glasgow last Feb due to working night shift.
10.  Sault - 5
Such a mystery to me how we don’t know the band members and the anonymity is so intriguing because this music is magnificent California soul, hip hop infused and beautiful vocals all mixed together.  Listenable yet intricate multi-instrumentalist tracks straight out of a 70s or future-film, can I place it?  No, I guess this is postmodernism and we haven’t quite hit peak saturation as I am finding such beauty in all this new music.
11.  Maria Somerville - All My People
Sparse and dense, dark and light, such space on the vocals. Morbid and quiet yet warm and life-affirming.  I love this new female soundscape stuff!!  Power artists right now - Maria Somerville and Carla dal Forno, also Grouper as always - since 2006 who evolves completely with these new sounds.
12.
13.  Ada Lea - what we say in private
Really enjoy listening to all these sassy and beautiful indie songs on this album
14.  Carla dal Forno - Look Up Sharp
15.  Prefab Sprout - I trawl the Megahertz
16.  Aldous Harding - Designer
17.  Sandy Alex G - House of Sugar
Gorgeous vocals and lyricism. I can’t stop thinking how there is some Elliott Smith intelligence and beauty in the vocals and similar depth and clarity but honestly how can anyone compare favourably with Elliott Smith?
18.  Sasami - Sasami
19.  Big Thief - Two Hands
Earnest, reflective, filled with narrative and observation I like.
20.  American Football - American Football
Classy, delicate, self-aware.  Female vocal tracks (Hayleigh Williams, Rachel Goswell and Elizabeth Powell!!!!!) are exquisite.
21.  Eartheater - Trinity
Where do I start?  Vocally sublime - some of the best vox I’ve heard in my life. Coupled with orchestral, trip-hop and synth sampling that add this lightness and buzzing music   Lyrically - empowered and intelligent but also some grunge and cool sounding hooks.  Could be cold and disorienting but it really works due to the strength of the vocals and lyrics.
22.  Equip - Cursebreaker X
So trippy and East/West and future/past sounds merging, being broke apart, sewn together and played all at once.  This is post-modernist, meta and self-aware.  This is what I imagine people listen to in Blade Runner, or insert future society here, want to say utopian though, because people will be loving all the vaporwave.
23.  Jessica Pratt - Quiet Songs
24.
25.  Surfing - Emotion
26.  Anemone - Beat my Distance
27.   Lana del Ray - Norman Fucking Rockwell
Should be a lot higher up but honesty I’ve been playing it to death my interest might be waning. Venice Bitch was one of my favourite songs last year, so that’s how long some of the tracks have been embedding themselves.
Oh Lana, there is so much to like.  Hyper-femininity, low and high notes, the old Hollywood feel to the lyrics on loving passionately and being adored, desire, jealousy etc.
28.  Teen Body - Dreamo
Shout out to Negative Gemini’s brother being in this band.  I like the shoe gaze guitars and drums, male/female vocal interplay (swwooooon, this is a winning combination seen in MBV, Slowdive and Jorge Elbrecht tracks I like so much).  Nice lyrics, they’ve done a neat job on being intellectually interesting, but also narratively alluring, hedonistic and simplistic.  (I like simplicity sometimes).
29.
30.  Clairo - Infinity
31.  Catnapp - Break
32.  Better Oblivion Community Centre - Better Oblivion Community Centre
33.  Men I trust- Oncle Jazz
Combines vapor wavy 80s sax future trippy experimental synths with beautiful catchy, lusty vocals in a completely fresh way that intrigues me.
34.  Caterina Barbieri - Ecstatic Computation
35.   Erika de Casier - Essentials
Bass bass bass.  Yes.  But then vocal perfection and introspection.  I am loving feminist narratives that are so well-produced and going to influence a whole generation of women in the way TLC and Destiny’s Child did - because ultimately they make great songs that appreciate kissing while asserting the right to a respectful relationship and are completely danceable and dark and light all at the same time.
Oh lord, this description is garbled but I feel like a lot of feminists will know what I am talking about - it’s like yes looking good, feeling desire and being desired is extremely pleasant but so is being respected and valued and the two are not mutually exclusive and we should be demanding better lives for our women rather than hanging in the shadows while men take up all the space (!!!)
36.  Bill Callahan - Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest
37.  Ariana Grande - thank u, next
I really liked this album due to various tracks with ace production sounding like shoegaze combined with pop and r&b and some excellent samples from 60s gal groups and soul musicians.  Ariana’s vocals are lovely and lift the tracks into absolutely ballin’ and relevant tracks.
38.  Jenny Hval - The Practice of Love
39.  Kedr Livanskiy - Your Need
40.  Stef Chura - Midnight
41.  Richard Dawson 20:20
42.  Hand Habits - Placeholder
43.  Lightning Bug - October Song
44.  Heaven - Truth or Dare
45 Barrie - Happy to be Here
46.  Bedouine - Bird Songs of a Killjoy
47.  Unloved - Heartbreak Instrumentals
48.  Meitei - Komachi
49.  EDDYEVVY - EDDYEVVY
Bring back the grunge!! Lovely vocals, sludgy guitars, nice lyrics. Lets all avoid eye contact at once, stare at the floor, dance from side to side and appreciate the beautiful vocals.
50  Angel Olsen - All Mirrors
Her voice, her lyrics.  Would be a lot higher up, but it’s just not clicking yet.
Lark is the standout track, her voice so quivery and clear and certain all the time.  It depicts a sad song, “when we thought what we had was such a good thing”.  How her voice soars out so high.  I don't think anyone at the moment (maybe Lana if reaching) can do a high note as certain, uncertain and emotionally charged as Angel.
Jesca Hoop - Stonechild
Kornel Kovacs
Mega Bog - Dolphine
Hatchie - Keepsake
Nilufer Tanya - In Your Head
Cucina Povera - Zoom
Anderson. Paak - Ventura
Sarah Davachi - Pale Bloom
Anadol - Uzun Havalar
Lomelda - M for Empathy
Kelsey Lu - Blood
Felix Lee - Inna Daze
To be released
Danny Brown
Sleater Kinney
Beck
This is an abundant, exciting era we are living in where female talent (which has always existed) is being increasingly represented and appreciated.
