So I've been thinking about Pokémon. I do that a lot. My inner Zoobooks kid demands it. But recently I was rewatching some of the old anime for Reasons and realized the games exist in universe as some sorta goofy edutainment simulator. Made me start thinking about 'what if the games oversimplify pokémon biology like Odell's Lake and the like oversimplify real world biology' and uh. With all due gratitude to @bogleech (who does reviews for pokemon designs that I adore) and the nature YouTubers I consume daily.

I would like to yell at you about Bulbasaur a little, Tumblr.

So imma get real nerdy real fast here. I love me some speculative extrapolation.

First off let's look at one of the official game designs real quick.

Okay, so, a sauroid design--I know that seems obvious from the name but hold on here, I have a point.

So here we have a large quadrapedal exotherm with obvious green coloration. Not just dull green, bright green. Given the species line is famous for learning Solar Beam, an attack that necessitates gathering sunlight and transforming it into an attack, we can probably be safe in assuming a lot of that green is chlorophyll, making this a rare non-marine vertebrate capable of using chlorophyll to produce energy for itself. And, occasionally, to gather enough energy to tell predators to step off.

The bulb and the... well, the 'saur, appear to be a package deal, but the bulb is not only distinct from the main body, it may be the primary source of its Grass typing, with the Poison typing belonging to the sauroid hefting that bulb around. That kinda distinction leads me to believe the bulb doesn't naturally grow on the Bulbasaur, and may be the result of a parent or sufficiently trained human implanting the seed for the bulb in its back. Meaning the body can have a set of two genetic parents while the bulb can have genetics coming from any flowering plants of that species in whatever area they're born to.

I wonder if the sauroids without bulbs are capable of surviving on their own or if this was an adaptation out of necessity. Like how megafauna in our actual world died off when the ecosystem could no longer support their energy needs. Are the bulbs needed to get to their size, leaving unaided young smaller to survive without the energy boost? If they were smaller and had weaker skin without the Grass-type boosting, I can see them being analogous to venomous toads. If they're needed for survival, it implies strong social ties, possibly entire colonies or troops of their evolutionary line, in order to provide new 'Saurs with their bulb seeds.

Also, if the two parts of the Bulbasaur are distinct, that implies the bulb is supplementing a diet that was already supporting the animal body. Given the name of the final evolution is Venusaur, I'm going to assume insects, probably birds and rodents once it grows larger and slower.

I'm almost entirely sure this thing lives in and around rainforests and jungles. Lots of moisture and sunlight for the chlorophyll and lots of biodiversity (to feast upon). It also fits with the assumed venomous amphibian origin.

I'm going to assume one of the oversimplifications is the evolution system, and that means the Bulbasaur, as pictured above, is a recognized and therefore official species for use in pokémon sport. There's probably all manner of variants not officially recognized, like ones that don't have their bulb, or who had their bulb seed malform somewhere along the line, or shift position in a way that hinders mobility. It also indicates a Bulbasaur that's battle ready can also lay or sire eggs, though without a ready support system, they're reliant on human aid to properly raise their young with bulbs. Based on body plan and energy requirements, I'm guessing covered nest with between one and three eggs, warm, kept damp, so the heat equally incubated the eggs. When they hatch, the young are kept hydrated and tucked away while a seed is implanted in their soft backs. Eventually, they are exposed more and more to the sunlight and the energy from that and catches brought to the nest helps them grow quickly until the adorable little starter beasts we so love.

There's more. There so much more. But I'll cover that next post or I'll ramble over the word limit.

Gnomosaurus: Gnomes in the time of the terrible lizards

One of the main things people who criticise my gnomological theories try to claim is that they're human-centric. It's been claimed that I'm trying to say that gnomes were created by humans inadvertantly, as if we manifested a mass hallucination. This is a misrepresentation of my ideas, plain and simple.

Gnomes have clearly been shaped by human beings to an extent, as evidenced by their appearance. I believe this is true, but nowhere have I said that humans created gnomes or that they need us in order to exist.

Let's think back to the time of the dinosaurs.

A time before anything resembling a human walked the Earth. Did gnomes exist in this time? Of course they did. All of the things a gnome is are things it was capable of being during the millions of years the dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Caretaker, observer of nature, keeper of the dark and wild places, and so on.

Now of course, Gnomes would look very different back then, just as our own human ancestors were different to us. We weren't there to shape their appearance into it's modern, recogniseable form.

Gnomes look as they do in the current era for a number of reasons ranging from the socio-historic to the psychic. The predominant reason is because humans are the dominant species on the planet and we have expectations of what a gnome is. We, as a collective, passively radiate an idea of what a gnome looks like, informed by folklore and culture.

When a gnome is incorporeal and wishes to take form, it takes the gnome-form, the genomomorph. It doesn't know what the gnome-form looks like before it does this. When it's incorporeal, it doesn't think in terms shapes and colours, it has no concept of physicality. It's just a sapient thought-form, it thinks in abstracts and emotions. But it can grasp onto the concept of gnomishness and ends up filling the psychic mold regarding gnome-form. In this era that means small people with prodigious beards in pointy red hats.

What would it mean in the time of the dinosaurs? I admit I'm no paleontologist, so I cannot say whether dinosaurs had a strong cultural concept of what a gnome was. Let's assume that they didn't. So let us think more simply and go back to the cornerstones of gnomishness.

In the time of the dinosaurs, a gnome would not be known as a gnome. But it would still be an earth-spirit driven by curiosity, respect, and ingeniousness whose goal is to caretake and cultivate. This is what would inform gnome-form in a time before the word 'gnome' even existed.

So what shape would this gnome-form take? It's probably very flexible. Like in our time, it would still choose to be small in form so as to not overlook the smaller parts of the world and would be dextrous in order to make good use of it's ingenuity. Unlike in our time, there is no single, worldwide dominant species who can generate a psychic field to influence non-corporeal beings' shapes.

However, it is the time of the dinosaurs so it is likely that if dinosaurs could form a collective psychic field (not being a paleontologist, I again could not say if they can do this), gnomes would've simply ended up taking a broadly sauroid form, so long as it was small and dextrous.

As to their behaviour, what would they do in this time? What does the concept of gnomishness look like in the time of the dinosaurs?

There are no mines for them to operate or gardens to cultivate, but they are still able to study and observe the wildness of the world and see all that happens out in the darkest of places across the land. They would still find respite beneath a mushroom on a rainy day or roam a tall, overgrown forest or behold the majesty of a mountain on a misty morning. Their inherent gnomishness would still be obvious if we were to behold a dinosaur-era gnome.

I have a theory that gnomes believe it is not their place to rule the world or govern it's direction. They are more than capable of overtaking humans technologically. However, that's simply not a part of gnomishness. They explore and maintain and observe. I think that's down to a matter of respect, the cornerstone of gnomeic thought, once again. Thus, in the time of the dinosaurs, they would not push beyond what the current stewars of the Earth, the terrible lizards, were capable of doing.

But I do think they were there in those times, in other forms, doing as they have always done and will do. They were here before us and though we have shaped what a gnome looks like and some of the superficial aspects of what they do, we have, by no means, created gnomes.

Doing the World Building June!

Prompts 1-11

12. What fauna inhabit your world?

Mars doesn’t really have anything really weird in terms of fauna.

The Ophidian Forest used to have a ridiculous quantity of snakes and then mongooses. Mongeese? But it has the perfectly normal allotment of forest creatures now.

You have your squirrels and boar and deer, oh my. A decent amount of foxes. Oddly no large predators. No wolves or bears or lynxes or murder birds.

There’s rumors of a dread Beast that stalks the forest. Is that a fauna? I don’t think a cryptid is a fauna until a biologist sketches it...

Lower Mars has the typical animals that have come to coexist alongside people. Cats to keep the rats out of the grain. Dogs because whossagoodboydenyouiss. Horses for carriages and riding. And the huge crested reptilian sauroids, draft animals for the heavier ore carts.

The city of Mars doesn’t have much in the way of fauna. Its so high up. And yet rats have managed to enter the city anyway in shipments from Lower Mars.

The rats attracted feathered snakes who have helped keep the pest problem under control, somewhat. But now there are snakes. No mongeese in Mars as of yet.

There’s very strict controls on pets in Mars but the recent trend is towards pet noodle sloths. They’re very easy to manage and are mostly content to hang on their owner most of the time. This trend was adopted from the gamayun of Mars who brought the creatures from across the sea.

Adding onto this by my chest still hurts and I have nothing else better to do anyway:

I’m still trying to get a good grasp on scale in this story, but for the most part the guidelines I’m currently using are

Casettebots and (Minimus) are around 6 to 7 ft and are capable of mass displacement due to their smaller size,

Minibots are around 10 to 12 ft tall with Rung being somewhere in between a Minibot and Scout class in terms of height, pushing about 13 ft

Scout class bots (Rodimus, Skids, Prowl etc.) range anywhere from 14 to 18 ft tall

“Leader” Class bots ( Megatron, Ultra Magnus) range anywhere from 25 to 30ft, Whirl is nestled neatly between Scout and Leader at about 24 ft tall (though this may change in the future) Megatron can mass displace to about Cassettebot size if needed but it takes a ton of energy to do so.

Capsize is a neutral bot in service to the Galactic Railroad, serving as a ferryman between the space elevators in his sector to the massive space-faring vessel that serves as a distribution center to the universe. He is a kind soul, taking the time to console Leigh when she first arrives at the space elevator with Leo Prime in tow before realizing that she has to part ways with her traveling companion.

At first I was planning on space pirate adventures with him, but I’m not sure if I can find a way to fit that into the storyline yet…

The Rodimus is just there for practice, but besides that I have a running joke that human appendixes are considered a delicacy in some alien cultures and Leigh has long since offered hers up for a bit of coin when she was down on her luck (she was severely underpaid she would later find out, only adding to her dour and distrusting nature at the beginning of the story) The aliens here are just some funky little dudes I drew on a whim that somehow turned out to be a pretty fun concept to play with. I like their funky eyebrow anatomy lol

So there's still surviving dinosaurs - intriguing. What do they look like: are they tail-dragging retrosaurs, feathered, Jurassic Park-style, or something else? How dragon-like do they look, and have they evolved in their time locked beneath the surface; indeed, what else lives in the Hollow Earth with them? Do they have a Supreme Monstrosity ruling over them all, and most importantly, will we be seeing art of these beasts anytime soon?

most have become bipedal and are quite civilized (some in the higher echelons are indeed feathered). The old-type dragons see them as colony born inferiors and often treat them terribly if they do not submit completely. there have been several uprisings by the sauroids that were brutally crushed by the dragons. the inner-earth (not so much hollow as honeycombed) has had an entire history of conflicts that the surface never knows about

The Venusaur Speculation Post

Well, I sure hated everything about this weekend.

Enough implications of personal whining, it's time for my first (and, frankly, favorite) fully-evolved starter: Venusaur.

So, if Ivysaur was an intermediate form, here we have a fully matured member of the species. The flower has fully bloomed, and the sauroid it's blooming from has gone from a relatively mobile body plan to a squat, more sedentary one. We have more visible teeth, and they're all sharp, indicating it has specialized even further towards rending meat from large kills.

While Ivysaur was mobile enough to dig a hole to hide itself in, Venusaur would either need to find just the right kinds of soil, or the affliction-based hunting strategy has become even more powerful, allowing it to stun prey from enough of a distance it doesn't need to be fully camouflaged.

While I wouldn't say conserving energy is the end-all be-all for a Venusaur, I can imagine that at some point in old age it'll hit diminishing returns. I'm guessing the flower stays in bloom, rather than forcing the Venusaur to bud and bloom repeatedly, which is...odd. It doesn't seem to function like a normal flower. Then again, it seems to have outsourced multiple plant functions, such as energy production, to the sauroid, leaving the flower to produce seeds and act as... well the main purpose of bright petals is to attract attention so--

Okay, yeah, it's to attract prey. Probably why it's called a Venusaur. Venus fly trap. Purposeful carnivorous plant comparisons. As a selective adaptation, Venusaur with a constant attractant probably fared better than Venusaur who had perennial flowers or other uneven energy consumption.

Thanks to a larger body size and more consistent energy needs, they're likely capable of larger broods. Probably between 5-10 eggs, average eight? But that'd likely mean females function as the singular head of a territory due to the needs of them and their extended clan. Which would explain the overwhelmingly male starters--reducing the males competing for places in these territories peacefully without losing the genetic diversity.

That's about all I have on this particular line for now. Still, I can't get over how toadlike their body plan looks to me. It's odd. It's like they started as amphibians before trading bodies adapted to water for bodies that were more plant-like. But I don't know, I don't like unique variations that are so isolated. For me to say that confidently I'd need examples of other pokemon-adapted symbionts, especially plant-based ones.

And then I realized something!

The doofy little feets! The eye placement! They both hang out in water! And they have evolutions that grow arms and hands!

And they're from the same region as Venusaur too! So, yeah. I'm confident in saying Venusaur and it's earlier stages came from an amphibious species that adapted via symbiosis to be more plantlike than amphibious.

Personality: Berta is a creature with an explosive temperament. She is arrogant, harsh, skeptical, cynical, aggressive, painfully honest, brave, and very bold. She gets mad easily over big and small things. It’s hard for Berta to throw away pride and admit that she made a mistake and to talk about feelings, especially positive ones. Despite her flaws, Berta is a great warrior and dedicated friend, ready to jump for her friends into the fire. She often argues with Dorian, and often yells at Louis. Berta still has trouble accepting the fact that Louis has taken Ashka's place after she died. She is also annoyed by Louis's sense of humor. The only person in the team of whom Berta is a bit afraid and has bigger respect is Aldrin. This is mainly due to Aldrin's age and gratitude for the fact that when Berta lost her tail, Aldrin made her prosthesis.

Backstory: Berta was born into a poor family. But despite that, she always wanted to be a warrior so her parents decided to send her to a military school. There she met Floris and Ashka with whom she became friends. After graduating Berta, Floris, and Ashka tried to get into the army but were rejected. Too ashamed of their failure, they didn't want to return to their families and since then, three friends had lived in the street stealing food and other little things to survive. She was too proud to go home and reconcile with her family, especially with her older sister she was jealous of and thought that her parents preferred her sister over Berta. On the street, she lived with two friends until they met Dorian and Ida. Together with them and with Bastien, Louis, and Aldrin, they became Team X. The skin on her front paws is very sensitive because when she was small she suffered severe burns due to a house fire, so to protect her front legs she wears black gloves.
