One day last September, a curious email arrived in Chris Hables Gray’s inbox. An author and self-described anarchist, feminist, and revolutionary, Gray fits right into Santa Cruz, Calif., where he lives. He’s written extensively about genetic engineering and the inevitable rise of cyborgs, attending protests in between for causes such as Black Lives Matter.
While Gray had taken some consulting gigs over the years, he’d never received an offer like this one. The first shock was the money: significantly more than he’d earned from all but one of his books. The second was the task: researching the aesthetics of seminal works of science fiction such as Blade Runner. The biggest surprise, however, was the ultimate client: Mohammed bin Salman, the 36-year-old crown prince of Saudi Arabia.
MBS, as he’s known abroad, was in the early stages of one of the largest and most difficult construction projects in history, which involves turning an expanse of desert the size of Belgium into a high-tech city-region called Neom. Starting with a budget of $500 billion, MBS bills Neom as a showpiece that will transform Saudi Arabia’s economy and serve as a testbed for technologies that could revolutionize daily life. And as Gray’s proposed assignment suggested, the crown prince’s vision bears little resemblance to the cities of today. Intrigued, Gray took the job. “If I can be honest with how I see the world, I’ll pretty much put my work out to anyone,” he says.
[...]
Many staffers seem to have genuinely bought into that message. Jan Paterson, a British-Canadian who heads planning for Neom’s “sports sector,” says she wants her grandchildren to grow up in the city, which she hopes will be the most physically active urban center in the world. Three years in, she’s one of the longest-serving employees. “I joined because, in my working career, no one has ever said, ‘Do you fancy setting up a semi-autonomous state using your passion as a tool for positive social change?’ ” Paterson explains. “It’s as simple as that.” Her eyes light up as she describes an ideal day in the Neom of the future. Imagine a sixth grader, she says. When he wakes up, his home will scan his metabolism. Because he had too much sugar the night before, the refrigerator will suggest porridge instead of the granola bar he wanted. Outside he’ll find a swim lane instead of a bus stop. Carrying a waterproof backpack, he’ll breaststroke the whole way to school. Paterson actually means this; Neom says it’s considering an idea for canals filled with swimmable water, creating a novel aquatic commuting option. If all goes well, she says, residents can expect an extra 10 years of “healthy life expectancy.”
[...]
Gray, the Santa Cruz author, was hired to help conceive a high-end tourism zone called the Gulf of Aqaba, which internal documents say will feature luxurious homes, marinas, nightclubs, and a “destination boarding school.” MBS told its designers that he liked the aesthetic of “cyberpunk,” a sci-fi subgenre that typically depicts a dark, tech-infused future with a seedy underworld—think William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer or the Keanu Reeves vehicle Johnny Mnemonic (also based on a book by Gibson). “I was a little surprised to hear that the prince was very interested in science fiction, but many people are, of all sorts of political persuasions,” Gray says. He and a team of other consultants were soon working long hours to research the aesthetics and implied culture of cyberpunk’s many iterations, which fed into a taxonomy of science fiction atmospheres that Neom employees were developing.

Final Haul For 1993
Trees lined the long road. Forest swallowed both ends of the Tarmac where it curved through the woods. Choruses of crickets chirped happily. The sun burned, bright yellow and high in the picture-perfect blue sky. And the wide stretch between pavement and trees offered no shade for a lonesome wanderer.
Feet barked, toes hurt, and the back edges of his heels burned inside his military-issued boots with every step. Just a little bit too small. Dressed too heavily for the warm weather, the fabric of his jeans, shirt, and army jacket soaked up entire hours of sweat.
Wheels. The crunch of stray chunks of gravel getting kicked off the asphalt. A car's engine rumbled. A vehicle neared from behind him, traveling in the same direction as he walked.
Before even turning around to look, Freddy extended a hand and stuck out his thumb.
Though he continued walking all the while, as he always did, his blood froze in his veins when the car slowed, pulling past him on the road.
A white Lexington cruiser with creamy stripes, imprinted with a star and big brown letters—marking it as property of the sheriff's department.
It slowed until it stopped entirely, twenty paces ahead of him, pulled over on the side of the road. The car's sirens remained dormant, though the ghost of their sound echoed in Freddy's mind. Reflections of trees on the windows turned its driver into a shadowy, mysterious silhouette. The driver's seat window lowered.
Freddy swallowed the thick empty lump of nothing in his parched throat and approached the vehicle.
He peered into the window. Back at him stared an overweight man in the expected uniform, wearing a black and beige baseball cap, also emblazoned with the golden star. Big, shiny aviator shades concealed the law enforcement officer's eyes, framing an otherwise clean-shaven face that belonged to a man in his late thirties.
The inside of the car reeked of stale cigarette smoke, coffee, and bourbon. The mixture made Freddy's nose wrinkle. He was sensitive like that, and he hated the stench of nicotine.
The man nodded at Freddy; Freddy reciprocated with the same gesture.
"Sir," said the man behind the wheel. "Where do you need to go?"
Freddy pondered that for a second, mouth agape.
"Sorry, but, uh, aren't you going to arrest me for hitchhiking?"
The uniformed man stared at him.
"No, sir. Not illegal in this state."
Freddy nodded again and said, "My lucky day. If it isn't too much of a bother for you, the nearest bus station'll do, Sheriff."
The Sheriff leaned over to open the passenger side door for Freddy, and only then corrected him.
"Deputy. Deputy Hart, sir. Please, have a seat. You look positively exhausted."
Given this sudden turn of good fortune, Freddy need not to be told twice. He unshouldered his duffel bag as he rounded the vehicle and then slid onto the passenger seat, dropping his bagged belongings across his lap, and buckling up.
The car soon lurched into motion and then trailed down the road.
Awkward silence filled the first minute, interrupted only by Deputy Hart, whose aviator-covered eyes stayed glued to their paved path.
"May I ask where you served, sir?"
Freddy clicked his tongue and then nodded anew. A routine question, a perfect segue for a rehearsed answer.
"Saudi Arabia, sir."
"Desert Storm?"
"Yes sir."
Before another awkward silence could ensue, Hart nipped it in the bud after a few empty beats.
"Thank you for your service. I don't think it gets said enough, and I have some friends who did their tour down in Panama. The way the VA treats you is a disgrace."
Freddy just sighed. He did not feel like talking any longer on the subject matter. He seized the opportunity to control the conversation. Kept his eyes on the road, reading the environment, scanning the density of the forest in anything but an absentminded fashion.
"Any work I could find 'round these parts?"
Deputy Hart cleared his throat, tilting his head.
"Fair chance that diners might hire a dishwasher; grocers might also need some help. Barring that, if you're still able, the local logging company is always hiring people to cut and work wood. And if you keep rolling down to Harlan, you might get yourself hired in the coal mining business. I reckon they're always looking for a set of strong arms and iron lungs."
Freddy rubbed his chin and the dark stubble there scritch-scratched with every motion.
He craned his neck when the deputy's car drove past a dirt road, forking away from the Tarmac.
"What's down that way?"
For the first time, Hart peeled his eyes off the road and followed Freddy's gaze. The side road shrank behind them as he said, "That leads off to the old nature reserves. Big park. Got a YMCA camp out there and some recreation areas for hunting, fishing, and the likes. Follow the trails, you eventually get to some places with a nice view of the Ohio River. Pleasant place, this time of year."
Freddy chewed on a sliver of dried skin that had been peeling off his lip, and then spoke up again.
"Mind pulling back there and dropping me off? I'm in no hurry, and a little time by the riverside to cool off sounds perfect to me right about now."
Deputy Hart rolled his jaw and almost instantly turned the car around. Though the sunny country road had stayed empty this entire time, he still used his blinker before making the U-turn. Gravel on the roadside crunched as the car's wheels sliced across it before connecting with pavement again.
Within seconds, they had returned to the side road, where Hart stopped.
"Want me to drop you off at the recreation center or YMCA camp or are you good right here?"
Freddy stared down the narrow dirt road and nodded.
"This is good. Good right here."
With even more routine than the rehearsed answer, he unzipped his duffel bag, slung out the big hunting knife, and jammed its blade directly into the deputy's neck before he could respond or defend himself against it—all in one fluid, deadly motion.
Limbs flailed, trying to push him away, and punches against Freddy's face and elbowed ribs would probably bruise. A twist of the knife and the sickeningly wet crunching sounds that went with it were sure to rob the deputy of every ounce of strength. The aviator glasses cracked under Freddy's iron grip against the deputy's face, and the struggle ended, punctuated by gurgling sounds and the last bit of life escaping from Hart's body in a ragged wheeze.
The car stopped rocking as their struggle subsided.
Spurts of crimson sprayed Freddy's face, adding hot blood to the fluids drenching his clothing. His hands were stained and slick with fresh gore. Flesh squelched as he pulled the knife back out.
He reviewed the fallout of his carnage and did not mind it one bit.
Did not even blink.
Freddy had grown tired of the soldier disguise, anyway.
His heart pounded like a drum and the adrenaline rushed—the possibility of getting caught was still real. The murder in broad daylight did not match his usual pattern, but why waste a perfect opportunity when it presented itself?
Like his fiendish luck had always prevailed, the road stayed empty, even as he got out of the passenger seat door, rounded the car, and groaned while he took three attempts until he finally managed to shove the dead deputy onto the passenger seat. He then got behind the wheel, slammed the door shut, and drove down the dirt road.
The vehicle thumped and bounced violently as he rode through the dense forest.
The year was 1993, and Deputy Hart may have just provided him with the final puzzle piece. Freddy figured he would not need to kill anybody else to finish his preparations for the ritual.
With a sidelong glance at Hart's corpse, he reckoned that it was fortunate that this man was overweight.
That meant he had more skin to work with.
Yes, he thought. Hart would be his final haul for 1993.

Trump Admin Sues Greyhound for Banning Muslim Driver from Wearing Full Length Islamic Robe
The Trump administration is clearly still full of Obama holdovers that need to fired en masse. They are still forcing mosques and Islamic cemeteries on residential communities as well.
Continuing an Obama practice of punishing American businesses that don’t accommodate Muslims, the Trump administration is suing the nation’s largest bus carrier for refusing to let a female driver wear a long, loose-fitting robe symbolic of Islamic piety. The flowing garment, known as an abaya, looks like a frock or cloak and is designed to cover a woman’s entire body in public. Last year women in Saudi Arabia, where Sharia law mandates the Islamic robes, launched a protest against the abaya.
Here in the United States, a nationally recognized company is being sued by the government over a uniform dispute that bans a Muslim driver in Baltimore from wearing the vestment behind the wheel. The offender is Dallas-based Greyhound Lines, the country’s largest provider of intercity bus transportation. The government is accusing Greyhound of violating the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on religion and requires employers to reasonably accommodate the employee, or job applicant’s, sincerely held religious beliefs. This month the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency that enforces the nation’s workplace discrimination laws, filed a complaint against Greyhound in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, Baltimore Division. The agency seeks back pay, reinstatement and compensatory damages for the unnamed Muslim woman and punitive damages for Greyhound.
“The driver was able to perform her duties safely while wearing her religious garb, but Greyhound unjustly refused to accommodate her religious beliefs,” said EEOC Regional Attorney Debra M. Lawrence in a statement announcing the lawsuit. “No employee should be forced to choose between practicing her sincerely held religious beliefs and earning a living.” A district director for the agency is quoted saying that “as our workplaces become more diverse, employers should review their policies and practices, including making reasonable adjustments to dress codes, in order to accommodate the religious beliefs of applicants or employees, unless it would be an undue hardship.”
During the Obama administration the EEOC took a special interest in protecting followers of Islam and the agency dedicated a lot of resources to pursue companies that refused to change longtime policies for Muslim workers. The EEOC sued a clothing retailer with a policy against head covers of any kind for religious discrimination because it would not allow a female employee at one of its stores to wear a head scarf as required by Islam. An Obama-appointed federal judge in northern California handed the administration a victory, ruling that the Muslim woman’s civil rights were violated. The EEOC also helped two Muslim truck drivers get a hefty cash settlement after being fired for refusing to transport alcohol because it violated their religious beliefs. The judge in that case, an Obama appointee in Illinois, ruled in favor of the Muslims and the Peoria-based trucking company had to pay $240,000 in punitive damages. Following the San Bernardino terrorist attacks in late 2015, the Obama EEOC issued a warning regarding workplace discrimination “against individuals who are, or perceived to be, Muslim or Middle Eastern.”
Deep into its first term, the Trump administration has failed to put an end to the policies. Last year the EEOC got a $90,000 settlement for a Muslim man who was not accommodated by a southern California security company that refused to modify its longtime grooming standards. It constituted religious discrimination, according to the government, because the Muslim employee requested the grooming exemption in accordance with his “sincerely held religious beliefs.” The settlement also forced the company, Allied Universal, to hire an equal employment monitor and revise its religious accommodation policies.
The Trump EEOC has kept with the Obama administration’s leftist agenda in other religious rights cases. A few years ago the agency sued a grocery chain for religious discrimination over the dreadlocks of a Rastafarian. Followers of the “Afrocentric” religion wear long, matted and knotted hair and smoke marijuana (“the spiritual use of cannabis”). There is no formal, organized leadership in Rastafarianism which makes it difficult to accept as an official religion protected by federal law. It was born in the slums of Jamaica and followers must have dreadlocks, long clumps of ungroomed hair symbolizing the mane of the Lion of Judah. Rastafarians believe Haile Selassie, the former emperor of Ethiopia, is God and that he’ll help blacks living in exile as a result of the slave trade return to Africa.

Is Arabic Useful Outside of Reading the Quran?
As one of the most spoken languages in the world, Arabic boasts a total of 422 million speakers. About 112 of the world's current Arabic speakers learned it as a second language. The vast majority of people who learn Arabic as a second language do so after converting to Islam. This is because Muslims believe the Quran is the unchanged word of God, recorded exactly as it was delivered to Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel. Therefore, to fully understand the Quran, one must read it in its original Classical Arabic.
Many people hold the erroneous belief that learning Arabic has no benefit outside of reading the Quran. In reality, however, there are some serious advantages to mastering the language, whether you're a Muslim or not. In this article, we'll be looking at some of the additional areas in which proficiency in Arabic will come in handy.
How You Can Use Arabic Outside Of Reading The Quran
Further Islamic Practices
In Islam, the speaking of Arabic is not restricted to the Quran. There are a great many additional Islamic practices which require a knowledge of the language in order to be fully experienced. Take the Shahada, for example.
The Shahada is the first pillar of Islam and must be completed before one can consider themselves a Muslim. It requires the convert to state their unwavering belief in one god and Muhammad as His messenger. The only caveat is that it cannot be recited in any language other than Arabic.
Admittedly, you don't necessarily have to speak Arabic to perform the Shahada. Many non-Arabic speakers recite it phonetically, usually with the guidance of an imam. Of course, this only prolongs the inevitable, as any Muslim needs to understand Arabic in order to fully immerse themselves in their faith. Arabic features heavily in most Friday prayer sessions. The imam will speak in Arabic for most of the gathering, speaking only in English or another language for brief periods.
Travel
Arabic is the official language of 28 countries. Tourist hotspots such as the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Morocco speak Arabic as their primary language. As do budding vacation destinations such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar. While many people in these countries also have some level of English proficiency, your vacation will be made all the more enjoyable if you can speak the native language. We say this because Arabs are infinitely more welcoming to those who share their tongue than those who don't. We're not saying they'll be hostile towards travelers who only speak English, but they will show an obvious preference towards Arabic speakers.
This may make Arabs sound a little intimidating, but you have nothing to fear. They are actually very easy to impress and will embrace anybody who displays even the most basic knowledge of Arabic. So if you want to experience that famous Arab hospitality during your next vacation, you only need to learn a few common phrases.
A more rounded knowledge of Arabic is good from a practical standpoint. Certain countries in the Middle East are still developing and can be quite difficult for a tourist to navigate. Finding bus stops, train stations, and taxi services will be significantly easier if you can speak Arabic, as street signs won't always be written in English.
Employment
If you learn to speak Arabic fluently, your employment opportunities will increase exponentially. More and more Western businesses are looking to expand into the Middle East. This, of course, requires each business to hire staff who can speak both Arabic and English to represent it.
Saudi Arabia is making a conscious effort to attract businesses from non-Arabic speaking countries. This is in line with the country's National Transformation Program 2020. By creating 450,000 new jobs in the non-government sector, Saudi Arabia hopes to reduce its economic dependence on oil. Learn Arabic and one of those jobs could be yours!
There is also the option of seeking employment in the United Arab Emirates, one of the most popular work and vacation spots among non-native Arabic speakers. The UAE is a nation built on immigrants. In fact, there are more than 200 nationalities living and working in the country at the time of this writing. Many of the UAE's foreign workers are professionals who were headhunted by UAE companies. Others, however, came to the country as job seekers with minimal skills and quickly secured employment thanks to their knowledge of Arabic.
Because the UAE is home to so many non-Arabic speakers, it is possible to live and work in the country without proficiency in the language. That being said, if you really want to climb the ladder in a UAE company and work your way up to a high-paying position, you're going to need to learn Arabic.
Entertainment
Arab movies are often ignored when people talk about foreign cinema. Even the world's most devoted movie buffs rarely have anything beyond a passing knowledge of Arab cinema. While they may not be as famous as their Italian and French counterparts, Arab movies are nothing to scoff at. In fact, Arab filmmakers have been responsible for some of the most critically-acclaimed movies of all time. For example, Cairo Station by Egyptian director Youssef Chahine has been described as a "great overlooked masterpiece". That film was released in 1958, but Arab filmmakers continue to churn out hit after hit. The 2017 war documentary Last Men in Aleppo, which follows members of the Syrian volunteer group White Helmets, was hailed as "viscerally immediate" by Variety, while Vulture branded it as a must see.
Right now, Saudi Arabia is making an energized effort to grow the world of Arab cinema. In March of 2019, the country announced the first Red Sea International Film Festival. The launch of the festival was accompanied by the news that the country would be opening a government-funded film school.
While most Arab films are available with English subtitles, ardent fans of the genre insist they must be viewed in their original language to be fully appreciated. As Arab film buffs ourselves, we share that belief.
Academics
Proficiency in Arabic has some serious advantages in the world of academics. Many non-Arabic speaking countries allow students to study it as a second language. Even if it is not offered by your specific school, you can pursue it after hours and still have it included in your final exams. If you already speak Arabic and live in a country where it is not the national language, we absolutely suggest doing this. Even though you probably won't learn anything new, you can be certain of an easy A in your final exam, which will provide a significant boost to your total grade. It also means you won't have to study French or another commonly-taught second language during school hours, which will leave you with more time to focus on other subjects.
Even if you don't already speak Arabic, we suggest studying it in school. Second-level Arabic lessons are pretty basic as students are taught from the ground up (the Arabic alphabet, common words and phrases, etc.). Most of the exams are pretty straightforward as well, so you won't have to work too hard to get a good grade.
A Final Word
Many non-Muslims who consider pursuing Arabic as a second language quickly abandon the idea. They are too quick to assume that proficiency in the language doesn't have any real advantages outside of reading the Quran. As exhibited in this article, however, Arabic is one of the most versatile languages in the world. Religion aside, even a basic understanding of Arabic can have a positive impact on multiple aspects of your life. It can help you get higher grades in school, rise to the top of your industry, and enjoy Arab movies, books, and TV shows in your free time.

Stop the Saudi Atabian Takeover of America
One of the most shameful episodes in American history has been the cover-up of Saudi Arabian involvement in 9/11. A Saudi diplomat-spy and former Imam and Saudi employee took two of the hijackers who did not speak English under their wings. The Saudi Ambassador's wife transferred money directly to hijackers. It seems like the idea was to create "plausible deniability" and throw the Ambassador's wife under the bus if needed. Saudi intentions towards America have only changed tactically since 9/11. Worst of all because Saudi money has been able to hire highly connected US lobbyists, who happily deny justice for the 9/11 families to excusing Saudi atrocities in Yemen. Law enforcement officials have generally agreed that 80% of US mosques follow the Saudi version of Islam, Wahhabism.

Umrah Guide 2022: Everything That Pilgrims Need to Know
One of the significant pilgrims for Muslims is Umrah. It is also known as a minor holy journey as it involves short and simple rituals in comparison to the annual pilgrimage of Hajj. Umrah is voluntary and can be performed at any time of the year. To ensure that this journey is fruitful it's important to plan for it in advance. A few important things which pilgrims can consider for planning the holy journey are discussed here.
Best time to do Umrah
Umrah can be performed during any time of the year except during the days of Hajj. However, there are time periods or months which are preferred by the pilgrims due to the convenience and benefits attached to them. Go through them to see which one of them suits you the best. The preference may depend on your family structure, budget, health & wellness, or the greatness of reward. Let’s know the best time to do Umrah.
The Ramadan Month
It is said that the importance of performing Umrah during the month of Ramadan is paramount. It is believed that performing Umrah during the month of Ramadan multiplies the reward as well as Allah’s blessing on one.
Grand Months
Grand months here are referred to as the months of Safar and Muharram of the Islamic calendar. Pilgrims can opt for these months to perform Umrah. This is because after Hajj the pilgrim crowd starts to retreat thus allowing an individual to avail of preferable hotels and flight tickets.

If you are a business -- and why wouldn't you be? -- then McKinsey and Company, "a global management consulting firm that serves a broad mix of private, public and social sector institutions" will help you make "significant and lasting improvements" to improve your performance and to achieve your goals. It might do this by advising you to systematically shortchange the customers of your insurance firm by unscrupulously denying or slow-walking claims, hiring bogus contractors, and using your bottomless legal resources to tie up angry claimants in years of fruitless, ruinous litigation. Or, it might assist you in utilizing family connections to a notoriously corrupt regime to win huge government contracts, all while laundering this activity through a contract with a state-owned utility that it happened to overcharge by nearly $75 million. Or it could play both sides of your bankruptcy filing without disclosing to any of the parties that it was taking money from all of the parties. Or it could turn your boring old gas company into Enron! If, on the other hand, you are the business of being the murderous ruling monarchy of a repressive, fundamentalist petro-state, McKinsey and Company could help you by just sort of accidentally, surely, disclosing the identities of three of your most significant online critics, helping you to arrest one, kidnap another's family, and shut down the Twitter account of the third.... The renewed media interest in McKinsey stems from its work for the Saudi ruling family, and it arose only because the grotesque murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a political media insider and all-around clubbable man, shocked the stunted conscience of our own professional ruling class in a way that the bombing of a school bus or the starvation of 13 million brown people never could.
