So, this blog series at Time Mold Slime Mold makes the case that the Obesity epidemic is a result of an unknown contaminant entering the water table of industrialized nations and essentially reseting our brains.
The idea is that we have a "lipostat"; this is a kind of "ideal weight" or rather, "ideal body fat percentage", that our body wants us to be at. When our body's systems detect that we are under our "ideal" it sends signals to the body to help us gain fat (e.g. we get hungrier, we fidget less to consume less calories) and when we are over that ideal it sends signals to help us burn fat.
Slime Mold Time Mold thinks that some kind of unknown contaminant has entered the water table which essentially sets our lipostat to want us to be fatter.
Now, I'm not totally sold on their candidates for what that contaminant is, but I think it basically is almost entirely certain that a broad form of this "contaminant theory" must be correct.
The obesity epidemic [In the US] begins, roughly, between 1975 and 1980:

The alternative hypothesis about the cause of the obesity epidemic seems to be the "Hyperpalatable foods" hypothesis. This is actually less a single hypothesis and more a related set of hypotheses. It says that, basically, in the modern world we are bombarded with high-calorie, sweetened, processed foods made by giant conglomorates, foods which are designed not to make us full, but rather, to eat more than we need to.
Now, here's the thing: If the problem is simply that modern, processed foods have a lot of calories, but don't make us feel full, so we eat way more than we should, then dieting should be really easy and work really well.
Think about it: if chips ahoy are designed in a lab so that we eat a whole box without feeling full, that's an easy problem to solve. We don't need to replace hyperpalatable Chips Ahoy with raw kale; we just need to replace them with ordinarily-palatable home-baked chocolate chip cookies.
After all, home baked cookies use simple ingredients that people have had ready access to for centuries. We just need to replace our hyperpalatable non-filling cookies with regular cookies that make you feel full after eating two, thus decreasing our caloric intake until we slim down to normal.
But of course that doesn't happen: dieting for weight loss of more than about ten pounds is notoriously difficult and most people are unable to do it.
First and second page google results for the term "hyperpalatable" tend to waffle about this. "Well," they say, "Actually foods that are rich in sugar and fats and low in other nutritional content can also be considered hyperpalatable."
This paper says that "The [Hyperpalatable Food] criteria identified a variety of foods, including some labeled reduced or low fat and vegetables cooked in creams, sauces, or fats."
But I'm sorry, once you go that route it is literally impossible that hyperpalatable foods are the cause of the Obesity Epidemic, because fucking "vegetables cooked in rich sauce" have been around for, as far as I know, the entirety of recorded cooking history.
If nothing else, if a cream sauce and an apple pie can make us addicted to food, then the Obesity epidemic in the top economic quintile should have started in 1875!
You are going to have to work really, really hard to convince me that I, today, have more access to fucking butter, sugar and lard than a rich person in the late 19th or early 20th century. I mean, things were primitive back then but not that primitive. If the wide availability of rich foods is all it takes obesity among the upper classes should have been visibly spiking a century ago or more.
And honestly by the 50s the middle classes had wide access to that kind of thing as well.
So I feel like if we want to blame "hyperpalatable" or "processed" foods for the obesity epidemic then we have to come back to a modified form of contaminant theory: Chips Ahoy aren't hyperpalatable because they have a ton of sugar and high calories; rather, scientists must have added some other thing that short circuits our brain and causes us to want to eat more in general.
Rather than being put into the water on accident, this unknown contaminant that causes food addiction is put into food on purpose.
But I don't see how the unknown contaminant could possibly be anything like a combination of fat and sugar, because fat and sugar were invented literally years before 1975.

THE BIGGEST UNDERTALE MYSTERY: SOLVED
for 5 years now, we’ve all been trying to solve the ultimate mystery of undertale: who and what is w.d gaster?
i have single-handedly solved the entirety of this mystery. no one will ever have to make theories about anything ever again.
now. first of all, we know gaster is associated with the number 666, a widely recognized unlucky number, the number of the beast. the only other number we’ve seen associated with gaster is the number 17, with his true lab entry. but why 17? the choice seems strange, since 17 doesn’t seem to have any specific associations, and it isn’t typically an unlucky number. except in italy. the number 17 is considered to be unlucky in italy.
gaster is referred to as “the man who speaks in hands"—who else tends to speak using hand gestures? italians.
papyrus, believed to have familial ties to gaster, loves making spaghetti. there is only one species currently known to have the ability to create spaghetti—italians.
it’s also widely believed that sans and papyrus came from an alternate dimension; as we all know, italy only exists as a paradoxical time vortex in the shape of a boot. it makes perfect sense that sans and papyrus could’ve spawned from there. it can also be assumed that the red substance spilling from sans’s body upon death is marinara sauce, the ichor of his kind.

None of them look convinced, not even Renjun. That doesn’t bode well, at least to Donghyuck.

JOYFULTALK returns with its third album for Constellation; another vibrantly divergent stylistic take on the analog materiality and sensibility of electronic composer-producer Jay Crocker, whose previous two records forged trance-inducing polyrhythmic intricacy, each from a distinct angle and sound palette, each enlisting a single instrumental collaborator. Familiar Science rallies contributions from a larger cast of musicians into a looser, cosmic recombinant combo—still shot through with JOYFULTALK’s singular mixing desk kinetics, but this time deep-diving into gnarled and twisted, spliced and diced out-jazz. Crocker draws inspiration from 1980s M-Base music and Ornette Coleman’s harmolodic funk period, while his own prior history as an improv guitarist also resurfaces for the first time in many years—an element in this polyvalent artist’s chemistry set that hasn’t appeared prominently in his own music for over a decade. Familiar Science finds Crocker folding time (as lockdown will do), immersed in his present-day kaleidoscope of solitary art and music practices in rural Nova Scotia, while channeling his former life as a bustling jazz collaborator in Calgary, Alberta. Building outwards from roiling resampled acoustic drums, Crocker extracted additional sonic and rhythmic textures, then formed the head of each song using dusted-off archival recordings and his own bass, keys and midi sequencing. Albertan percussionists Eric Hamelin (Ghostkeeper, Chad Vangaalen) and Chris Dadge (Lab Coast, Alvvays) provided improvised drum tracks to be chopped and harvested; Nova Scotia-based Nicola Miller (Ryan Driver, Doug Tielli) laid down resplendent excursions on saxophone and flute; Crocker’s own dexterous guitar appears on several cuts. Familiar Science also poignantly features samples from live recordings by the late Calgary saxophonist-iconoclast Dan Meichel, catalysing some of the album’s heaviest contortions. Crocker weaves all these raw materials into exuberant compositions that blur the line between sizzling corporeal combo and sampledelic futurist jamz, variously conjuring (leftfield) Flying Lotus, (later) Tortoise, BADBADNOTGOOD and Squarepusher’s Music Is Rotted One Note. The rubbery hyper-compression of boom-bap opener “Body Stone” initiates the séance, and the album offers a panoply of skittering grooves and soaring melodic pathways thereafter, through quags of heady jazz alternately streaked with dayglo delirium and other more vaporous states of revelry. Crocker’s own wordless stacked vocals are the giddy secret sauce on several cuts, and his lead guitar work (in kinship with the lean progressions of Mary Halvorson or Jeff Parker) features on “Take It To The Grave”, “Stop Freaking Out!” and the album’s title track. More honeyed passages on songs like “Blissed For A Minute” and “Ballad In 9” center around Nicola Miller’s buoyant alto sax and flute. Familiar Science is a rousing feast of noise-tinged polychrome electronic avant-jazz: richly harmolodic compositions teeming with intersecting textures and turbulences; exploratory, exhilarated and indeed joyful.
