I'm not sure why Monorail Music (Glasgow) always gets cool extras to sell with their LPs. Maybe they just ask. But, they do have an autographed/tote offer with their version of the new LP from Baltimore, Maryland band The Smashing Times. This LP sounds less like the Television Personalities, Pale Lights and The Pastels (previous releases brought these bands to mind), and more like Saturday Looks Good To Me or Mighty Clouds.
Of course, all this could be wrong as there is only currently one song available. This new LP is set for release in November and will be handled by K Records/Perennial.

It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Fred Thomas. Originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan, Fred started playing music as a teenager, and in 1994 founded the math rock band Chore. The band broke up two years later, and he joined the brilliant His Name Is Alive, and in 1999 started the well-known indie rock band Saturday Looks Good to Me. They would release eight albums, mostly on Polyvinyl, before Fred retired the band in 2013. As a solo artist, Fred has been recording albums since 2002, and his 14th album Window in the Rhythm was just released on Polyvinyl, and it is fantastic!

had a dream last night.
you were in it, singing with glitter on your wings.
and i felt alright for a minute.
then i remembered several things.
will the summer ever come?
are you kissing anyone?
do you sleep alone?
are you waiting for me baby?
is there anyone who wants to wait this long?
will the summer ever come?
are you kissing anyone?

I know we've all made concert mistakes we regret. I'll give you two. First, I was record shopping so long I missed over half of Eleventh Dream Day's set when opening for The Chills at the I-Beam in San Francisco. Second, I didn't see The Aislers Set EITHER night I saw Yo La Tengo and The Clean split the bill at The Fillmore (also in San Francisco).
The Aislers Set are just a fantastic band and Precious Recordings has released their John Peel session from 2001 on 10". Remember, buying this on Bandcamp doesn't incur high shipping rates because of a shipping arrangement with Jigsaw Records.
The recent post of Mighty Clouds (and by extension Saturday Looks Good To Me) sits nicely next to The Aislers Set. If you want some of The Aislers Set released work check Slumberland Records who reissued their catalogue on vinyl some years back.

I gave too much of my heart tonight
Can you come to where I'm staying
And make some extra love?
That I can save 'til tomorrow's show
'Cause I need somebody to remember my name
After all that I can do for them is done
I need someone to remember me
I need something bigger than the sky
Hold it in my arms and know it's mine
Just how many stars will I need to hang around me
To finally call it heaven? ▶

Every once in a while, I post something just so I can listen to it again. I'm sure we've all been there (although never on a blog)...the dreaded, yet understandable, "The time has come to open thy heart/wallet."
That happened to me with the new release from Schenectady, New York (the Bandcamp page describes them as "donut-fueled pop songs from a carriage house") band Nice Hockey.
The first song I heard was "Let's Talk About You". It sounded like a great cross between Barcelona ("Simon Basic" is still one of my all-time favorite releases), Saturday Looks Good To Me (or Mighty Clouds) and something Pop Filter might release.
This looks to be self-released. There's not much about the band online. All I could find were these demos on Soundcloud.
