Introducing my Touken Ranbu OC Kijinmaru Kunishige, Saito Hajime’s sword ❤

I just want you to know my design is based mostly on the Kijinmaru Kunishige that was on display at the Hakuouki Sword Exhibition in 2016 and only used the Tsuba of the replica that you can buy as a souvenir in used my design. (photos below)

Design Notes

I wanted his clothes to look like a combination of the Shogunate army uniform and the Meiji-era police uniform (not sure if I was successful in that). I tried coloring the uniform black but it didn’t look as good as the navy so I stuck with the navy

I added the Oni mask since Kijinmaru Kunishige has the kanji for Oni (鬼) in his name

The Oni mask also plays a big role in his personality and backstory. According to this SOURCE, it is implied that Kijinmaru broke because he was an Osaka sword (at least from what I can gather from google translate)

Osaka swords are said to have been very beautiful but break very easily, Kondo Isami even wrote in a letter to Sato Hikogoro saying

「剣は大坂者は決して御用いなさるまじく候」

“A sword should never be used by people from Osaka.” - (rough translation by google) 

In other words, do not use swords made by swordsmiths in Osaka. 

Character Personality

Due to his origins as an Osaka sword, Kijinmaru is very beautiful but because Osaka swords are seen as impractical and fragile he hates his beauty and would often hide it

He’s stoic, calm, and diligent, always picking practically and function over aesthetics

Due to his self-hatred, he doesn’t want to be seen as weak or useless so he would often take on more tasks than he can do and will push himself until he burns himself out

When he is with the Shinsengumi swords and Saniwa Chizuru he is a bit more open and relaxed, especially around Saniwa Chizuru

Relationship with Saniwa Chizuru

If it’s Saniwa Chizuru who had lived through the route of the other characters he’ll be relaxed around her due to her honest and gentle nature he doesn’t feel like he would be judged around her

However if it’s the Saniwa Chizuru who lived through Saito’s route he’ll be very warm, kind, and gentle toward her, sometimes leaving flowers on her desk or room

When he first met her he felt like Saito was trying to tell him to protect her in his place and developed a deep loyalty towards her

Starter for @oc-lootcrate​ || w/ Kondo Sato

Shisui notes the exact moment when things start to look a bit different. The signs on the shops change -- symbols and letters and colors shifting as if in a dream -- and the walls of the buildings around him adopt varying stages of wear: stages that look completely different to what they did merely hours ago. Trees that were once here are now no more, and even the animals seem to have moved and taken their homes with them to entirely different spots. Where it was relatively sunny only moments ago, it is now raining softly. Judging from how wet the ground is, Shisui figures it has been raining a while now.

He's crossed dimensions again, though this time it looks like he's simply crossed over to an alternate version of the same place. 

Here's hoping it's not the Kirigakure that still remembered who he is. He can only hope that, after twenty years, he looks different enough that neither the people from the past nor the future would recognize him. As it is, he's dressed in civilian clothing similar to that of a local farmer's-- no indicator that he is from anywhere outside the Land of Water. 

The goat walking beside him suddenly takes off, though, and decides to try and ram into a kid nearby. 

Shisui takes after it, and manages to pull it back by its collar before it tries to get up to any more mischief. 

"I am so, so sorry!" Darned goat. "He's usually very well behaved. You're not injured, I hope?" 

And he's not exactly making eye contact, looking for any signs of injury instead to avoid having to look at the person he just bumped into...

I hope everyone had a nice day regardless of what you may or may not celebrate! Christmas over here started off nice but started going downhill later in the day, but that’s neither here nor there; I’m here now to give a small little update!
