I read this article from the NY Times about Librarians burning out because they're acting as social workers (Link to a paywall free version here: [https://archive.is/V1334]) and went to the official website to read the comments because it's a horrible hobby of mine.
I'm in this field, and I deliberately steered clear of being a public librarian because I do not have the compassion and sympathy necessary for the space. I believe that libraries are a space for all and we should do our best to serve our communities as a locus for information.
Most comments did not seem to quite agree with that idea, saying that libraries should NOT act as community centers in any way, shape or form. People seemed offended by the mere concept of a maker space, let alone a place where a social worker could be found. Hell, there were comments offended that people talk above a whisper now!
Beyond such folks, there were people who talked about how homeless patrons, while often polite and well-mannered, were one of the populations that presented the most stress for them. That is the whole crux of this article after all. Then I came across this comment:
Tumblr media
"Public spaces being taken over for private use"
SIr, these people are HOMELESS. They very much do not have any private space to speak of! Furthermore, the Republican Party fucking hates the idea of any kind of public amenity, let alone one of quality! The absolute gall of you to write this comment!
I get some of the arguments here-the dread of finding someone overdosed in the bathroom, the reading room turned into a glorified internet cafe, the general unpleasantness of being around someone you know has not seen a bath in days and the unpredictability of it all. I get wanting *everyone* to be held to a standard, to behave considerately in a public space. It's not an unreasonable desire!
Hell, I told my sister when she lived in Sarasota to spend some of her time working at a library instead of a coffee shop, and the first time she tried a homeless man marched right up to her and started sniffing. She was so unnerved that she never tried again, and I looked stupid for hyping up the library.
Homeless people are people, and their circumstances do not make them a pleasant population to be around. But that does not mean we cannot take yet another fucking place away from them.
I don't know the solution other than solving homelessness. It's not just the woes of the unhoused causing this burn-out. Unparented kids, Karens of the Highest Order, the general lack of post-pandemic manners are all combining to make working at a public library difficult. I entered library school, a masters degree, knowing ALL of this, and chose to pursue being an archivist to avoid this.
IDK, fund housing first, robust social work/mental health programs, community centers with after school programs, and public libraries. Make the fucking social net.

The Age of Depopulation? (Foreign Affairs) Although few yet see it coming, humans are about to enter a new era of history. Call it “the age of depopulation.” For the first time since the Black Death in the 1300s, the planetary population will decline. But whereas the last implosion was caused by a deadly disease borne by fleas, the coming one will be entirely due to choices made by people. With birthrates plummeting, more and more societies are heading into an era of pervasive and indefinite depopulation, one that will eventually encompass the whole planet. What lies ahead is a world made up of shrinking and aging societies. A revolutionary force drives the impending depopulation: a worldwide reduction in the desire for children.
Far from where Hurricane Milton hit, tornadoes wrought unexpected damage (AP) Tony Brazzale, a diving boat captain who has lived for 10 years in his Wellington home in southeastern Florida, wasn’t worried about Hurricane Milton. The storm’s center was forecast to make landfall on the opposite side of the peninsula and then cross the state well to the north of his family. But on Wednesday afternoon as the hurricane began to pummel the state, he stood outside his house and watched as a tornado loomed in the sky. The twister shattered windows in the home, tore off roof shingles, ripped a tree from the ground and left branches and other debris scattered in the yard. “The hurricane was a nonevent for us,” he said. “Had it not been for an F-3 tornado, the entire thing would have been a nonevent for us.” It was one of dozens of tornadoes spawned by Milton that hit South Florida far from where the storm made landfall near Sarasota. Meteorologists believe there may have been at least 38 tornadoes associated with Milton.
UK leader Keir Starmer is marking 100 days in office. It has been a rocky ride (AP) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer marks 100 days in office Saturday with little cause for celebration. Starmer’s center-left Labour Party was elected by a landslide on July 4, sweeping back to power after 14 years. But after weeks of stories about feuding, freebies and fiscal gloom, polls suggest Starmer’s personal approval rating has plummeted, and Labour is only slightly more popular than a Conservative Party that was rejected by voters after years of infighting and scandal. “You couldn’t really have imagined a worse start,” said Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London. “First impressions count, and it’s going to be difficult to turn those around.”
Why NATO, Ukraine are nervous about a second Trump presidency (The Week) Europe is watching the 2024 presidential election closely, wondering how Donald Trump would handle the Ukraine War and the future of NATO in a second term. Trump has promised he would “stop the war 24 hours after being elected,” though he has not shared any details about how to stop the war or how to get Russia and Ukraine to negotiate. Trump has held an “escalating political grudge” against Ukraine since early in his first presidency, believing that the country’s leaders favored Democrats. Overall, he has pushed the GOP toward a “vision of a less interventionist” foreign policy, said The New York Times. It’s a vision that is more reluctant to come to the aid of countries like Ukraine. Many observers believe it’s a “question of when, not whether” Trump would lead the United States out of NATO, Michael Hirsh said at Politico. But Trump is “unlikely to quit NATO outright.” Instead, he would probably work for what one observer called a “radical reorientation” of NATO—continuing to keep the American nuclear umbrella over Europe but handing responsibility for the “bulk of infantry, armor, logistics and artillery” to the European allies, Hirsh said. Instead of being the “primary provider of combat power in Europe,” said defense expert Dan Caldwell, who is linked to Trump’s circle, the United States would be “somebody who provides support only in times of crisis.”
Why Politicians Ignore Abuses in India’s Sugar Industry: They Run It (NYT) In the sweltering sugar fields of the western Indian state of Maharashtra, abusive practices such as debt bondage and child labor have long been an open secret. But in 2019, a state lawmaker named Neelam Gorhe documented a new level of brutality: Female workers were getting unnecessary hysterectomies at alarmingly high rates. She presented her findings to the state’s health minister and alerted the region’s sugar regulator. She called on her government colleagues to ensure that workers received basic services including toilets, running water and a minimum wage—all in accordance with Indian law. Yet most lawmakers apparently ignored the report, or read it and moved on. They launched no further investigation and passed no laws. The reason, to many in Maharashtra, is obvious. Sugar is among the state’s most important industries, one that sells to big brand buyers such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi, and is heavily controlled by the political elite. Most of the state’s sugar mills are led by sitting lawmakers or political figures, a new investigation by The New York Times and The Fuller Project found. That includes at least 21 state lawmakers, four members of the national Parliament, five government ministers and nearly 50 former officials. That means, in many cases, that the very people who could protect workers are also profiting from their exploitation.
Myanmar military unleashes drones to counter rebel advances (Washington Post) Myanmar’s military has been ramping up its use of drones, deploying a combination of retrofitted commercial drones and customized military munitions to carry out a torrent of deadly strikes against rebel forces and civilians, according to visual evidence of recent attacks and interviews with people inside the country. After being hammered by a major rebel offensive, the military has clawed back some territory in the south but lost more ground in the northwest and east of Myanmar. As rebels capture towns closer to the capital Naypyidaw, surveillance and attack drones have filled critical gaps in the military’s defense, including providing support for its overstretched air force and helping to compensate for a lack of manpower, said Morgan Michaels, a Singapore-based security analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
For Atomic Bomb Survivors, a Nobel Prize 80 Years Later (NYT) Cities blasted to rubble. Burned bodies and flayed flesh. Invisible waves of radiation coursing through the air. And the indelible image of a mushroom cloud. The atomic bombs dropped by the United States on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki showed the world what an apocalypse looks like. Tens of thousands of people died in the immediate aftermath. But some emerged from the devastation. Struggling with survivors’ guilt and sick with illnesses caused by the radiation, they were shunned for years as living reminders of the human capacity to engineer horror. On Friday, Nihon Hidankyo, a collective of Japanese atomic bomb survivors, was awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for its decades-long campaign to rid the world of nuclear weapons. The survivors of the bombings—more than 100,000 are still living—“help us to describe the indescribable, to think the unthinkable, and to somehow grasp the incomprehensible pain and suffering caused by nuclear weapons,” Jorgen Watne Frydnes, the committee chairman, said.
Global Trade Grows but Remains Vulnerable to War and Geopolitics (NYT) The global system of container ships and tankers that move tens of billions of dollars of products around the world each day mostly functions fluidly and without notice. But in a few parts of the world, shipping lanes shrink to narrow straits or canals, geographical choke points where an isolated disruption can threaten to throw much of international trade out of whack. One of those is the Taiwan Strait, a 100-mile-wide strip of water between Taiwan and mainland China, which has become a critical shipping lane for countries across the globe. New research from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, has found that the strait is a conduit for more than a fifth of the world’s seaborne trade, with $2.45 trillion worth of energy, electronics, minerals and other goods transiting the channel in 2022, the most recent year for which data is available. The findings are significant given that the strait is at the center of a geopolitical dispute between Taiwan and China, which views the island as part of its territory. A blockade or military action from China that halted traffic in the strait could have dramatic implications for the global flow of goods, and the Chinese economy in particular, the researchers say.
As Hezbollah and Israel battle on the border, Lebanon’s army watches from the sidelines (AP) Since Israel launched its ground invasion of Lebanon, Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants have clashed along the border while the Lebanese army has largely stood on the sidelines. It’s not the first time the national army has found itself watching war at home from the discomfiting position of bystander. Lebanon’s widely beloved army is one of the few institutions that bridge the country’s sectarian and political divides. Several army commanders have become president, and the current commander, Gen. Joseph Aoun, is widely regarded as one of the front-runners to step in when the deadlocked parliament fills a two-year vacuum and names a president. But with an aging arsenal and no air defenses, and battered by five years of economic crisis, the national army is ill-prepared to defend Lebanon against either aerial bombardment or a ground offensive by a well-equipped modern army like Israel’s. The army is militarily overshadowed by Hezbollah. The Lebanese army has about 80,000 troops, with around 5,000 of them deployed in the south. Hezbollah has more than 100,000 fighters, according to the militant group’s late leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
U.N. convoy to evacuate patients fails to reach besieged northern Gaza (Washington Post) A U.N.-led convoy trying to evacuate patients from northern Gaza was forced to delay its mission for a third day Friday amid heavy fighting, the United Nations said, as Israeli forces once again battled Hamas militants in the area, leaving neighborhoods under siege. Israel launched its latest operation in northern Gaza on Saturday night, ordering swaths of the region to evacuate, including several hospitals where staff said they lacked basic supplies and were struggling to treat victims. Residents and first responders said the bombing has been relentless, especially in and around the Jabalya refugee camp, a longtime Hamas stronghold, and that there were dead and wounded lying in the streets. The U.N.-led convoy, which left southern Gaza for the north on Wednesday, hoped to retrieve critically ill and injured patients from the Kamal Adwan Hospital and bring them south to Gaza City, officials said. But for days, despite prior coordination with the Israeli military, the vehicles were held up at checkpoints by forces on the ground or prevented from moving because of the strikes, according to Georgios Petropoulos, head of the Gaza office at the U.N. agency for humanitarian affairs. In Jabalya on Friday, rescue workers said Israeli troops had laid siege to the camp, which the United Nations says still has about 40,000 residents, and were firing at those who tried to leave. “There are tens of people killed and injured lying on the ground who we cannot reach,” said Fares Afana, head of the ambulance services in northern Gaza.

* Dr Carl Coppolino - Deadly Anaesthesist
I know it's been a while so here we are;
Carl Coppolino was born in 1933 in Florida, USA. Coppolino graduated Fordham University in 1954 in the Bronx and worked at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center during 1958 in Brooklyn. Coppolino’s health was so poor that by age 30 he had already suffered several heart attacks, retired as a practicing anesthesiologist, and was collecting sizable disability pay. A true polymath, Coppolino had also written several books and scientific papers on anesthesiology and was considered an expert on the matter.
He met his wife whilst working at Riverview Hospital in New Jersey. The connection between the two was unmatched, his beautiful wife Carmela was also a Dr and she understood how hard the job of being a Dr and the work schedules could be. Dr Coppolino's health was deteriorating so poorly that he ended up having to give up work earlier than expected. Other than Carmela's shifts at work and Carl's failing health, the couple seemed happy. But as we all know looks can be deceiving. Inside Carl something was boiling and he was losing his grasp on reality. In 1965 they moved into a home in a retirement community called Longboat Key just off Florida's Gulf of Mexico's coast by the time they were both 32 due to his fragile health.
Back in Middletown, New Jersey, Coppolino began having an affair with his neighbor Marjorie Farber, a stunning woman 14 years his senior. Her husband retired US Army Colonel William Farber was unaware of the passionate rendezvous' that his wife and Carl were having. In 1963 Colonel Farber died suddenly after suffering a heart attack. Marjorie followed Carl to Florida in August 1965 and their secretive affair resumed as if nothing had happened, as if she had not just suffered the huge loss of losing her husband.
On August 28th 1965 Carmela Coppolino was dead. A late-night phone call to a physician, Dr. Juliette Karow headed to Longport Key, Florida, home of Dr. Carl and Carmela Coppolino. Carl had called for Dr. Karow’s assistance as Carl believed Carmela was dying of heart attack. Dr. Karow arrived to find Carmela sadly was already deceased. She was just 32 years of age. Her death was ruled as a Coronary Occlusion (the partial or complete obstruction of blood flow in a coronary artery) on her death certificate. Her body was sent to Boonton, New Jersey. Dr Carl Coppolino did not attend her funeral citing "My heart is weak and my personal physician said it may kill me."
Just 40 days after Carmela's death, Carl was married again. Not to his mistress Marjorie but rather his second mistress. A 38 year old divorcee called Mary Gibson whom he had met at Maxwell Bridge Studios. They became bridge partners and from there a passionate love grew. Marjorie Farber was seething, a woman scorned indeed. How dare he marry someone else when their trysts were more than sex for Marjorie, she loved Carl and would have done anything for him. This included helping him murder her husband.
Marjorie couldn't allow Carl to marry someone else, he couldn't get away with it. Marjorie walked into Sarasota County Police & told them that Carl murdered Carmela using deadly quick metabolizing succinylcholine as well as using this on Colonel Bill Farber, her husband. She confessed her own involvement in the murder of her husband and so the police believed her, after all why would she implicate herself if there wasn't some truth to what she was saying.
Marjorie alleged that on 29th July 1963 under post-hypnotic suggestion from Carl, she had taken a hypodermic needle that he had provided her She began to inject her husband she claims "I couldn't stop myself, it was absolutely over and beyond my control." According to her, unable to continue injecting her husband she called Carl, it was the middle of the night but Carl left his sleeping wife Carmela and went to the Farber's to finish the job. He drugged his victim, William Farber, before smothering him with a pillow.
Upon investigation, Investigators were able to prove that Coppolino had obtained a supply of succinylcholine right before Farber's death. And again just 5 weeks before Dr Carmela's death. Carl's excuse for having this supply of succinylcholine was he was getting rid of a 'troublesome dog" and that he was planning on conducting research into a way of measuring the concentration of the drug in the blood during surgeries.
Due to the circumstances and the confession from Marjorie the police decided to exhume Carmela's body. Dr Milton Halpern, NYC's Medical Examiner at the time & Toxicologist Dr Joseph Umburger examined Carmela for any proof of Marge's claims. After observing Carmela, a small puncture wound was found on her left buttocks, which was consistent with a hypodermic needle. He decided he wanted to test for succinylcholine chloride, however no such test existed. This made it the perfect murder weapon. Dr Umburger refused to let Coppolino get away with the murder of his young, beautiful wife and so he set about devising such a test.
In June 1966, after spending months taking samples from Carmela's organs and the injection site, he had finally succeeded in isolating both succinic acid and choline, this was proof Carmela had been killed in the way Marjorie had described. This revelation proved Mrs. Farber's credibility and she requested the exhumation of her husband, Bill. The police complied with this request due to her proving her reliability in telling the truth and giving her confession.
On July 14th 1966 Colonel William Farber's body was also exhumed, unfortunately Dr Umburger's test could not be used on the Colonel's body as he had been in the ground for too long. The medical examiner could prove William Farber had been murdered though due to the detection of severe fractures of the cricoid cartilage in the larynx. Halpern deducted Farber had die due to strangulation. Just 9 days later on July 23rd 1966, Carl was arrested for the murder of Farber. 4 days later he was informed he was to be indicted for the homicide of his wife, Carmela. Coppolino would have two trial, one for each homicide. The first trial was to be that for Colonel William Farber. It was to be in Naples, Florid and secondly in Freehold, Florida would be his trial for the murder of Carmela.
For both of his trials, Carl used a well known public figure, lawyer F. Lee Bailey, despite using him twice however both trials had different conclusions. Carl was very charismatic, he was able to convince the jury in Freehold County Court that he was simply being a good physician on the night Colonel Farber was killed, which was roughly 29th/30th July 1963 according to the M.E. In response to what exactly he did in his role/duty as a Dr he claimed he had given Farber a tranquilizer and then Pronestal to correct his uneven heart. He reported that he recommended Bill attend hospital but both Bill and Marge refused and so were asked to sign a form declaring such. According to Dr Coppolino the damage exhibited in Farber's neck could have occurred during the exhumation. A defense expert, Dr Spelman theorized that Bill had perished from a heart attack. His theory based on sufficient arteriosclerosis clogging Farber's coronary arteries enough to cause a heart attack. The jury at Freehold County Court deliberated for just four and a half hours before deciding to acquit Carl Coppolino of all charges, releasing him on bail He was free and so Carl and his new wife Mary travelled back home before taking off on holiday!
Overconfident Carl & his defense lawyer, F. Lee Bailey, wholeheartedly believed that he would also be acquitted of charges regarding Carmela's death. They thought this due to no eyewitnesses and them convinced they could prove Marjorie wasn't credible. Marge however was growing concerned about Coppolino's second wife, Mary, she didn't want history repeating itself.
The experts for the prosecution included Dr Joseph Umburger whose newly devised test would no scrutinized because other experts claimed succinylcholine was untraceable. This is because of how rapidly succinylcholine is broken down within the body. The succinic acid Dr Umburger had discovered was in Carmela's brain rather than the injection site. Coppolino's lawyer implied the M.E Dr Halpern had doctored the autopsy report in order to make Carl appear to be guilty.
Dr Umburger unexpectedly confessed that he only said it was possible that Carmela had been poisoned with succinylcholine chloride. He claimed Dr Halpern had insisted he removed the word possible from the report. This only helped Coppolino's case because if the report was altered what else could have been amended or doctored. These circumstances led Coppolino's lawyer, F. Lee Bailey, to believe the case was a home run. He was so confident he didn't even put his client on the stand to deny the accusation of her murder. This would be his downfall.
At 9:30am on 28th April 1967, the jury announced their verdict - Guilty! The all male jury decided this wasn't premeditated murder but rather 2nd degree murder, this meant Coppolino couldn't face the death penalty. Personally I find this appalling how is poisoning not premeditated? Carl was sentenced to life imprisonment, sadly though due to 'good behavior' from the shamed doctor he served just 12 years. Upon his release, his wife Mary greeted him beaming with happiness after having fought and protested for his innocence.

The Evolution of Elderly Care: The Rise of Independent Living Services
Tumblr media
As our population ages, the landscape of elderly care has undergone a profound transformation. Traditional notions of retirement living in Florida have expanded to include a diverse array of options, with independent living services emerging as a cornerstone of this evolution. In this article, we'll explore the journey of elderly care, focusing on the rise of independent living services and their significance in empowering seniors to lead fulfilling lives on their own terms.
A Shifting Paradigm: From Elderly Care Homes to Independent Living Services
Elderly care has historically been synonymous with retirement homes or assisted living in Sarasota Florida, where seniors receive varying degrees of support and care. However, as attitudes towards aging have evolved, so too have the options available to older adults. Independent living services represent a departure from the traditional model, offering seniors the opportunity to maintain their autonomy and lifestyle while accessing support services as needed.
The Essence of Independence: Understanding Independent Living Services
At the heart of independent living services is the concept of autonomy and self-determination. Unlike traditional elderly care home, which may provide round-the-clock assistance, independent living communities offer a more hands-off approach, allowing residents to live independently in private apartments or houses. These communities typically provide amenities such as dining options, recreational activities, and transportation services, giving seniors the freedom to tailor their living experience to their preferences.
A Booming Trend: The Appeal of Retirement Living in Florida
Florida has long been synonymous with retirement living in Florida, thanks to its favorable climate, abundance of recreational opportunities, and vibrant senior communities. The state's allure as a retirement destination has only grown in recent years, attracting seniors from across the country seeking a relaxed and sun-soaked lifestyle. Independent living services have flourished in Florida, catering to the diverse needs and preferences of its aging population.
The Benefits of Independent Living Services
The rise of independent living services reflects a broader shift towards person-centered care, where the individual needs and preferences of seniors take center stage. By choosing independent living, seniors gain access to a supportive environment that promotes wellness, social engagement, and personal growth. Some key benefits of independent living services include:
Maintaining Independence: Seniors retain control over their daily routines and lifestyle choices, preserving their sense of autonomy and dignity.
Social Connection: Independent living communities foster a sense of camaraderie and belonging, providing opportunities for residents to socialize, participate in activities, and form meaningful relationships.
Access to Amenities and Services: From fitness centers and swimming pools to on-site dining and transportation services, independent living communities offer a range of amenities designed to enhance residents' quality of life.
Peace of Mind: Family members and loved ones benefit from the peace of mind knowing that their aging relatives are safe, supported, and surrounded by caring professionals.
Flexibility and Choice: Independent living services are highly customizable, allowing residents to tailor their experience based on their individual needs and preferences.
Navigating the Transition: Choosing the Right Independent Living Community
Selecting an independent living community is a significant decision that requires careful consideration. Factors to consider include location, amenities, cost, and levels of care provided. Prospective residents and their families should tour multiple communities, ask questions, and assess the overall atmosphere and culture of each facility before making a decision. Additionally, it's essential to inquire about the availability of support services and healthcare options, should they be needed in the future.
Conclusion: Embracing the Future of Elderly Care
The rise of independent living services marks a paradigm shift in how we approach elderly care, emphasizing empowerment, choice, and quality of life. As the aging population continues to grow, so too will the demand for innovative and person-centered solutions that honor the diverse needs and preferences of seniors. By embracing independent living, older adults can thrive in environments that nurture independence, foster social connection, and promote overall well-being. As we look to the future, let us continue to champion the evolution of elderly care, ensuring that every senior has the opportunity to age with dignity, grace, and vitality.

A year back in Florida
About a year ago, I moved away from the San Francisco Bay Area, back to Tampa Bay, Florida, where I’d lived for (mostly) all my previous life.
Florida is not the same place it was when I left. The metros feel more urban, more alive, than I remember. Some of that is undoubtedly on me, on my failure to explore them adequately back in the 1990s. But a lot of what I’ve been finding now simply wasn’t there two decades ago. St. Petersburg now has blocks of walkable downtown, starting from the waterfront museums and moving west through the Edge District, on to Kenwood and Grand Central, where they recently held one of the biggest Pride festivals in the country. Tampa’s downtown no longer feels like they roll up the sidewalks at five (a problem that San Jose struggled to solve for years as well). Just like St. Pete’s Central Avenue reminds me—a little—of K and J Streets in midtown Sacramento, smaller towns like Gulfport and Dunedin remind me—a little—of the smaller walkable towns back in California like Danville, Campbell, and Livermore.
Some of the areas that were truly nothing twenty years ago have become, well, something. The town I’ve moved to, Ridge Manor, is an unincorporated area a few miles north of still-tiny Dade City, on a state road that goes straight east-west between I-75 and Orlando. The next “big small town” over, Clermont, has blossomed from a near-abandoned downtown into a genuinely interesting suburb, even if it’s hard to figure out just what it’s a suburb of. Wesley Chapel, about a half-hour south along I-75, is a surprisingly large suburb of Tampa now.
A year ago, I wrote that you can find great coffee shops and craft breweries and cocktail bars in any metro area, and that’s true here, too. Dade City itself has a great craft brewery and a solid coffee shop, and there are far more throughout Tampa/St. Pete and Orlando. Great cocktail bars are the hardest to find here, I’ve found, but they are here.
Florida is not the same place it was when I left. It was, back then, a relatively purple state overall. There are still Florida liberals and leftists, but the Florida of 2023 is a one-party state. And, not to put too fine a point on it, Florida Republicans lead the charge to make that party indistinguishable from the far-right fascist parties plaguing Europe and Central America. Every day brings a new attack on the rights of people DeSantis and his supporters have identified as The Enemy. Trans people. Queer people. Drag queens. Immigrants. Teachers. Librarians. Disney.
A drive around rural Florida a quarter-century ago would have certainly taken you past houses and farms flying confederate battle flags; the state’s panhandle has long been an epicenter for the neo-confederate movement. On a similar drive today, though, the flags are almost exclusively for Trump. And there are many, many flags for Trump. Flags and bumper stickers and banners, and an ugliness I can’t remember seeing in America in my lifetime. When I left Florida, Jeb Bush had just won reelection; I’ve returned to a state where Republicans would consider Jeb too suspiciously liberal to elect him to a municipal utility board.
I am not in the same place in Florida as I was when I left. Politically and culturally, I’m more Left Coast than I had been two decades ago, to be sure—but I spent most of my previous Florida years in Tampa or its suburbs, or the wealthy, culturally rich city of Sarasota.1 As someone who presents as a cishet male, I have little to worry about in most interactions here yet—but that yet slowly gathers weight. I’ve been open about my beliefs, moderately open about my not-so-binary, fairly asexual identity. I write queer, often political, furry fiction under my own name. So far, this has only resulted in lost friendships, but the potential for worse is real.
Yet my worries don’t center on me. The majority of my friends are queer, too. Will any trans friend, including my BFF/partner, be safe here even for a visit? They’re certainly not going to move here. More and more, I’m hearing of people moving out.
I am not in the same place in Florida as I was when I left. All my adult life, both in California and previously here, I could reach dozens of choices for shopping, eating and drinking in under fifteen minutes; some were just a nice walk away in good weather. But Ridge Manor’s several thousand residents spread out over rural half-acre lots. A few businesses cluster in a couple of strip malls around the I-75 interchange. There’s a grocery store, three or four decent restaurants (and three or four fast food places), so-so Chinese takeout, and a few gas stations. Anything else is twenty minutes away at a minimum.
That might not sound like a big deal. It didn’t sound like one to me, either. I’d come home to this house every Christmas from California; I knew where it was. And, I’ve always enjoyed driving. For years, my BFF and I took Saturdays out, exploring towns hours away. How bad could this be?
The answer, it turns out, is worse than I thought. In all my adult life, I’ve lived where I could reach dozens of choices for shopping, eating and drinking in under fifteen minutes, often in places where some were just a nice walk away in good weather. Now, hitting even most standard suburban chains is no longer a whim, it’s an excursion.
Sometimes I’ve dreamt of living in a cabin in Big Sur. I don’t anymore. I want to be in walking distance of something, a short driving distance of anything. Markets, coffee shops, a neighborhood bar, an ice cream parlor. Ridge Manor is not a place where that’s possible, and despite the construction and development around the area, it never will be. Yes, it will get hundreds of new tract homes, but the people who move in there will find that they, too, are a half-hour away from everything.
But do I regret moving? No. I moved to be with my mother, to help take care of her and the house. Our relationship isn’t frictionless, but it’s good, better than many such relationships that I see among my own friends and, for that matter, among hers. I know her better now than I have at any previous point in my life. It’s not just a solid, loving parent-child relationship, it’s a solid, loving friendship. That’s invaluable.
I still take Saturdays out, albeit mostly by myself now, and I’ve discovered or re-discovered plenty of cool places, many of which weren’t here before and all which have changed. There are places I could truly feel at home in, if I lived closer to them, and if Florida’s politics ever become less fraught. And if I can still deal with Florida summers.
The what-ifs remain, though, no matter how much I try to shunt them away.
First what-if: My ability to carve out my own time has been markedly impaired over the last year, from writing to TV watching to reading. Perhaps I am not good at setting boundaries, or perhaps I am just not used to living with someone who wants a lot of attention compared to past, undemanding housemates. Would it have been better to live in the suburbs a half-hour down the road, drive up here a few times a week for dinner, spend the night every other week?
Never say never, but I’m doubtful. The connections I’ve been making with my mom couldn’t have been made if we weren’t living together. Beyond that, I wouldn’t be here to be able to help with routine small things, and helping with large ones would be that much more challenging. She’d be markedly lonelier, and despite my penchant for solitude, I would be, too.
And there’s the cost of living. Despite the isolation, there are many things to like about this house—it’s on over an acre of wooded land, for a start—but the number one thing is, simply, that it’s fully paid off. A year ago, I wrote, “I won’t miss paying as much in rent share [in California] as I would pay for an entire two-bedroom apartment in Tampa.” That turned out to be optimistic; a decent one-bedroom, not two, apartment in Wesley Chapel would be hundreds more a month than my rent share in Santa Clara was. The median rent in Sacramento is, as of this writing, lower than both Tampa and Orlando.
Second what-if: my mother and I could move somewhere else, somewhere that checks off more of my boxes and, ideally, more of hers. She’d like to be closer to amenities, closer to medical care, closer to the water. We’re both concerned about the heat, too. As I write this, Florida swelters in record-breaking heat. The SF Bay Area and Sacramento are at unusual highs, too, but the old “it’s a dry heat” joke hits home. Sacramento’s projected high of 103°F tops our projected 94°, but our heat index hits 116° compared to Sac’s 164°—and our low will be 74° (with a heat index ten degrees higher), whereas Sacramento will make it down to a comparatively arctic 58°. If this is the new normal, it may be untenable for both of us.
Housing prices anywhere we’d want to live are likely to be challengingly high even with our resources pooled together, though, and I don’t know what place we’d both agree on. Stay in the state, or leave it? She thinks about going back to Baltimore, where she grew up, or around Asheville, where Floridians seem to be moving to when they want to leave this state. I have no personal affinity for Maryland or North Carolina, though; the places I do have affinity for—most of California and the Pacific Northwest, parts of the Southwest—aren’t places she does.
The thought of moving anywhere, though, leads to uncomfortable thoughts of mortality—both my mother’s and my own. When will I find myself living alone once more? Will I want to stay where I’m living then? If it’s still here, still in this house, the answer is likely no. But if my mother and I move to a new place, she’ll push for a bigger house. I doubt I’d want a bigger house by myself, or even with a housemate. (And if it’s in Florida, the current politics all but ensure my trans BFF won’t be that housemate.)
Of course, maybe a bigger house still makes financial sense; with luck, having a more expensive house means I get more money if I sell it and do move somewhere else, ultimately. The money isn’t being lost. Objectively, I know that. But I don’t feel it.
So, where does this leave me? It leaves me with a loving parent and great finances; it leaves me isolated, frustrated with my inability to manage my own time, wondering why I’m even worse than I used to be at coordinating with friends. It leaves me in a good and bad place. It leaves me in limbo.
I’ll check back in after another year.
Sarasota is now ground zero for not just Florida’s culture wars but all of America’s, as the home of the neofascist Moms of Liberty and epicenter of QAnon conspiracy nonsense. My college, New College, is the one that DeSantis is in the process of transforming from a nationally-recognized liberal arts school into a national laughing stock. [return]

NatureCoaster.com celebrated ten years of publishing with a party, weathered three hurricanes, reached its highest viewership, and sent its fearless leader on a transatlantic cruise in 2024. The Aerosmith song, “Livin’ on the Edge” plays in my head while I write this "farewell to 2024" message. While many in our readership area have lost everything and are rebuilding from the ground up, we continue to do what we do best – connect Florida’s Nature Coast through a consistent voice of "we are stronger together, let's get involved, let's get out, and let's help protect our nature from loss of habitat." While I am the only full-time member of the NatureCoaster team, we are blessed with some wonderful contributors, including Pat Manfredo who donates our Photo of the Day every day, Sally White, author and photographer, Captain William Toney, 5th generation Homosassa fishing guide, and Debbie Selsavage, dementia expert and trainer. Recently we have begun carrying stories from Toby Benoit, area historian and outdoorsman. NatureCoaster Partners, Supporters and Advertisers We have some amazing partners. The tourism development agencies for Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco Counties trust NatureCoaster to bring their messages to our hundreds of thousands of readers – especially you. So does the Tampa Bay History Center, Southwest Florida Water Management District, and the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation. Our local business partners are just as important, and I hope you are familiar with them and take time to support their shops, attractions, activities, and restaurants. We have local partners like Bomhoff Law, Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters, Chop Block Grill, Heartwood Preserve, The Red Brick Place, and The White Heron Tea & Gifts who have advertised with us for over five years. Each of these businesses went through COVID, hurricanes, and the cleanup, innumerable economic challenges, and more with us; together we continue to get stronger. These are businesses we trust. You can too. We welcomed several new partners in 2024, including Traveling Art Parties, Angelo's Pizzeria & Ristorante, and Masaryk Winery/Upicktopia. We welcomed new partners: Angelos Pizzeria & Ristorante, Traveling Art Parties, and Masaryk Winery/Upicktopia which just makes us happy all over! Also, a new service in Citrus County: Taste and Tales Food Tours. We loved their Inverness tour and will be checking out the Crystal River one shortly. I remember asking one of our partners for a letter of recommendation, to which he replied, “I renew my ad with you every year. What more is there to say?” Our directory of Local Businesses and Organizations has some folks I just have to thank: Coping with Dementia, Main Street Eatery, Oysters Restaurant, Stay and Play Pet Getaway, Sunset Landing Marina, JG Ranch, Brijbag Law, Campbell & Company, and Kelp Creative Agency who have all kept their Featured Directory Listing for many years. Each year we promote u-pick farms and several continue to advertise with us, including Bette's Blues, JG Ranch (also has beef shares), and Upicktopia (also has an onsite winery and restaurant). Kelp manages our website and we would never have grown to where we are without them. If you need a reliable partner for your online presence, we recommend Kelp. NatureCoaster Gives Back to Our Communities through Sponsorships We are strong supporters of Brooksville Main Street, the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, the East Pasco Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, the Hernando County Arts Council, and the Twistid Arts Initiative, helping to sponsor their festivals and events as part of our vision of supporting the communities we serve. Our Tenth Anniversary Celebration to benefit the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation in April was well-attended. We enjoyed a full day of activities at the Masaryk Winery and Upicktopia with a custom paint party by Traveling Art Parties, live blues music by the Sarasota Slim Band, BBQ box dinners by Suzy’s Kitchen, a viewing of the O2O: Path to Connection film and a Panel discussion by the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation with a silent auction to benefit the Foundation. We raised thousands for the Corridor and had a great time! Would you Participate in NatureCoaster Get-Togethers? Would you join a group of NatureCoasters on an adventure in 2025? The quest for weight loss has become a significant focus for many individuals across the United States, and Sarasota is no exception. This coastal city, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant community, is witnessing a transformation in its health landscape, largely driven by innovative weight loss strategies and the involvement of local health professionals. In this blog, we will explore how weight loss in Sarasota is shaping health trends, the role of the Sarasota weight loss doctor, and the community's response to these changes.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Weight Loss Landscape in Sarasota
Sarasota’s weight loss scene is not just about shedding pounds; it embodies a holistic approach to health and well-being. The community's growing interest in weight loss has led to the emergence of various programs, support groups, and health resources. This shift has prompted local practitioners to adopt more comprehensive methods to address the diverse needs of residents seeking to lose weight.
The Rise of Personalized Weight Loss Programs
One of the most significant trends in Sarasota is the rise of personalized weight loss programs. These programs often involve consultations with a Sarasota weight loss doctor, who assesses an individual’s health, lifestyle, and goals. This tailored approach ensures that weight loss strategies align with each person’s unique circumstances, making them more effective and sustainable.
Many local clinics and wellness centers now offer customized meal plans, exercise routines, and behavioral coaching. These programs help participants understand their bodies better and empower them to make informed decisions about their health. This personalized touch not only enhances weight loss success but also fosters a sense of community among participants.
The Role of Technology in Weight Loss
Technology is playing a pivotal role in the weight loss movement in Sarasota. From mobile apps that track food intake and exercise to online support groups, residents have access to a wealth of resources. Many Sarasota weight loss doctors and clinics have embraced these technologies, providing virtual consultations and digital tools that enhance the weight loss experience.
Apps that monitor calorie consumption, activity levels, and weight loss progress have become popular among individuals in the community. These tools encourage accountability and motivate users to stay on track with their goals. Moreover, the convenience of online consultations with a Sarasota weight loss doctor has made it easier for people to seek professional guidance without the need for in-person visits.
Community Support and Accountability
Sarasota’s community plays a crucial role in shaping health trends, particularly regarding weight loss. Support groups, fitness classes, and local events focused on healthy living have become increasingly popular. These initiatives foster a sense of belonging and provide individuals with the encouragement they need to pursue their weight loss goals.
Local community centers and organizations frequently host events such as group workouts, health fairs, and cooking classes. These gatherings not only promote physical activity and healthy eating but also create opportunities for residents to connect and share their experiences. This social aspect of weight loss in Sarasota contributes significantly to long-term success, as individuals find motivation and accountability through shared goals.
The Influence of Nutrition
Nutrition is a cornerstone of any weight loss journey, and Sarasota is embracing this idea wholeheartedly. Local restaurants, cafes, and markets are increasingly offering healthier options, catering to the community's demand for nutritious foods. Many establishments now feature menus that highlight low-calorie, nutrient-dense meals, making it easier for residents to make healthier dining choices.
Additionally, farmers' markets and community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs have gained popularity in Sarasota. These initiatives provide residents with access to fresh, locally sourced produce, encouraging healthier eating habits. The emphasis on nutrition is shaping a culture that values wholesome foods, aligning perfectly with the community's weight loss objectives.
The Impact of Fitness Trends on Weight Loss in Sarasota
Sarasota is not just a picturesque destination; it's also a hub for various fitness trends that are significantly influencing weight loss efforts. From outdoor activities to innovative workout classes, the community’s commitment to fitness is evident.
Embracing Outdoor Activities
Given Sarasota’s beautiful climate and stunning scenery, outdoor activities have become a staple for many residents looking to lose weight. Activities like biking, running, yoga on the beach, and group fitness classes in local parks are popular among individuals of all fitness levels. This outdoor engagement encourages people to stay active while enjoying the natural beauty of their surroundings.
Moreover, Sarasota's parks and recreational facilities often host fitness events and challenges, encouraging friendly competition and camaraderie among participants. This community spirit is an essential aspect of the weight loss journey, motivating individuals to push themselves further while connecting with like-minded people.
Innovative Fitness Classes
The rise of innovative fitness classes has also contributed to the weight loss trends in Sarasota. Many local gyms and studios offer a variety of classes, ranging from high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to dance-based workouts and yoga. These classes cater to diverse interests and fitness levels, making it easier for individuals to find a workout they enjoy.
Sarasota's fitness instructors are often passionate about helping others achieve their goals, providing guidance and support during classes. This motivational environment can inspire participants to commit to their weight loss journeys and develop a consistent exercise routine.
Collaboration Between Health Professionals and the Community
The collaboration between health professionals and the Sarasota community has been instrumental in shaping weight loss trends. Local doctors, nutritionists, and fitness experts are increasingly working together to provide comprehensive care and support for individuals seeking to lose weight.
Multi-Disciplinary Approaches
Many Sarasota weight loss doctors adopt a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating medical expertise, nutritional guidance, and fitness training into their weight loss programs. This collaboration ensures that individuals receive well-rounded support, addressing not only their physical needs but also their mental and emotional well-being.
By working together, these professionals create a seamless experience for patients, making it easier to navigate the complexities of weight loss. This integrated model is gaining traction in Sarasota and is helping to redefine how the community approaches health and wellness.
Educational Initiatives
Education is key to promoting sustainable weight loss practices, and Sarasota's health professionals are committed to raising awareness. Workshops, seminars, and informational sessions are frequently organized to educate the community about the importance of healthy eating, regular exercise, and lifestyle changes.
These initiatives empower residents with knowledge, helping them make informed decisions about their health. The emphasis on education fosters a culture of wellness, encouraging individuals to take an active role in their weight loss journeys.
Addressing Challenges and Barriers to Weight Loss
While the weight loss movement in Sarasota is thriving, it's essential to acknowledge the challenges and barriers that some individuals may face. Understanding these obstacles is crucial for creating effective strategies to support those on their weight loss journeys.
Financial Constraints
Access to weight loss resources can be limited for some individuals due to financial constraints. Programs led by a Sarasota weight loss doctor or personalized nutrition plans can be costly, making it challenging for everyone to participate. However, many community organizations and health clinics offer affordable or sliding-scale options to ensure that everyone has access to support.
Emotional and Psychological Factors
Weight loss is not solely a physical journey; it also involves emotional and psychological challenges. Many individuals struggle with issues such as body image, self-esteem, and motivation. Sarasota's community has begun to recognize the importance of mental health in the weight loss process, with an increasing number of support groups and counseling services available to help individuals navigate these challenges.
Building a Supportive Environment
Creating a supportive environment is essential for overcoming barriers to weight loss. Sarasota's community can continue to foster a culture of encouragement by promoting healthy lifestyles and celebrating achievements, no matter how small. By emphasizing progress over perfection, individuals may feel more motivated to pursue their weight loss goals without fear of judgment.
Conclusion
Weight loss in Sarasota is more than just a trend; it reflects a collective commitment to health and well-being. With the support of a dedicated Sarasota weight loss doctor, personalized programs, and a vibrant community, residents are embracing a holistic approach to weight loss. The integration of technology, nutrition, fitness, and mental health awareness is shaping a healthier Sarasota.
As the community continues to evolve, the emphasis on education, collaboration, and support will undoubtedly pave the way for future health trends. By addressing challenges and fostering a positive environment, Sarasota is not only transforming individual lives but also setting a powerful example for other communities striving for better health.
In this vibrant and supportive environment, individuals seeking weight loss are empowered to take control of their health, leading to lasting changes that benefit both themselves and the community as a whole. With a focus on collaboration and holistic well-being, Sarasota is truly shaping the future of health trends in the region.

Hurricane Helene makes landfall in Florida as a catastrophic Category 4 storm.
Hurricane Helene has made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region as a catastrophic storm, battering the area with winds exceeding 130 mph and posing a threat of a potentially "unsurvivable" 20-foot storm surge along with heavy rainfall.
Weather Forecast For 32827 - Orlando FL:

Major Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region as a catastrophic Category 4 cyclone, unleashing hurricane-force winds and threatening a potentially "unsurvivable" 20-foot storm surge along with heavy rainfall.
Helene struck around Taylor County, Florida, between Tallahassee and Tampa, with its effects felt hundreds of miles away. At least two fatalities were reported in Wheeler County, Georgia, where a mobile home was damaged amid numerous Tornado Warnings.
The storm surge was severe enough to prompt water rescues from the Big Bend to Southwest Florida, with reports of mobile homes floating in the coastal town of Steinhatchee.
Power outages have surged as Hurricane Helene’s winds batter Florida. Over a million residents in the Sunshine State were left without power as wind gusts approached or even surpassed hurricane-force levels. St. Petersburg recorded a gust of 82 mph, while Sarasota experienced a wind gust of 74 mph.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in 79936 El Paso TX:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/202335507/Weather-Forecast-For-79936-El-Paso-TX
Significant outages were also reported in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
FOX Weather's Ian Oliver reported that the surge rapidly submerged streets around St. Pete Beach on Thursday evening, even with high tide still several hours away.
Further south, in a community called Sunset Beach, local fire rescue announced they could no longer respond to service calls due to the flooding.
Clearwater Beach experienced its highest surge since at least the Superstorm of 1993, reaching over 7 feet.
The storm surge continued to pose a serious threat as the system moved up the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Due to Helene's massive size, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of a significant risk of life-threatening storm surge along the entire west coast of the Florida Peninsula and the Big Bend region.
The highest inundation from Hurricane Helene was forecasted to reach up to 20 feet of storm surge flooding from Carrabelle to the Suwannee River in Florida. Areas such as Apalachicola and Chassahowitzka were expected to experience storm surges of 10-15 feet.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that a "catastrophic and deadly storm surge" is likely along parts of the Florida Big Bend coast, with inundation potentially reaching 20 feet above ground level and accompanied by destructive waves. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee described the anticipated storm surge into Apalachee Bay as "catastrophic and potentially unsurvivable."
Helene's effects will extend well beyond the coastal regions of the Big Bend, with hurricane-force gusts expected across Tallahassee and into Georgia as the storm moves inland overnight into Friday morning. The storm's size and speed mean it will retain its strength further inland than most hurricanes.
Although Helene was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane within an hour of making landfall, its impacts are anticipated to persist for several days. Significant rainfall could lead to widespread and potentially catastrophic flash flooding across the Southeast.
During the hurricane, the Florida Highway Patrol reported a serious accident on Interstate 4 in Tampa that resulted in a fatality.
A video from the Florida Department of Transportation showed a highway sign dislodged and resting on a vehicle.
Troopers have not disclosed the cause of the crash but urged residents to remain at home until the worst of the weather has passed.

Tropical Gardens
Florida's subtropical and tropical climate zones create ideal conditions for tropical gardens. These gardens are characterized by their lush greenery and vibrant flowers, including hibiscus, orchids, and bromeliads. Towering palm trees and dense ferns create a jungle-like atmosphere, while water features such as ponds and fountains add to the serene environment. The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami is a prime example, showcasing a vast array of tropical plants and hosting numerous events and educational programs.
Native Plant Gardens
Emphasizing sustainability, many Florida gardens focus on native plant species. These plants are well-adapted to the local environment, requiring less water and maintenance than non-native species. Native gardens not only conserve water but also support local wildlife, providing habitats and food sources for birds, bees, and butterflies. Examples include the Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo, which features extensive displays of native flora, and the Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, which combines native plantings with beautiful architecture.
Botanical Gardens
Florida's botanical gardens are a treasure trove of plant diversity, featuring collections from around the world. These gardens are often organized into themed sections, such as desert landscapes, tropical rainforests, and butterfly gardens. They serve as educational and research centers, offering workshops, guided tours, and special events. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, known for its impressive collection of orchids and epiphytes, and the Naples Botanical Garden, with its themed gardens representing different tropical regions, are just two of Florida's renowned botanical gardens.
Public and Community Gardens
Public and community gardens play a significant role in Florida's horticultural landscape. These gardens provide green spaces in urban areas, promoting community engagement and sustainable gardening practices. Residents can grow their own produce, learn about gardening, and participate in community events. The Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando and the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee are excellent examples of public gardens that offer beautiful settings for relaxation and education.
Wildlife Gardens
Many Florida gardens are designed to attract and support wildlife. Butterfly gardens, for instance, are planted with nectar-rich flowers like milkweed to support butterfly populations. Bird-friendly gardens feature native plants that provide food and shelter for various bird species. These wildlife-friendly gardens enhance local biodiversity and offer visitors the chance to observe Florida's rich animal life.
Summary
Florida gardens are a testament to the state's natural beauty and horticultural diversity. From tropical paradises and native plant gardens to botanical and community gardens, these spaces offer something for everyone. They provide peaceful retreats, promote sustainability, and offer educational opportunities, making them a cherished part of Florida's natural heritage. Whether you are a gardening enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil place to unwind, Florida's gardens are sure to captivate and inspire.
