Back-to-School Educator Event
The other day my eight-year-old asked me about my purpose in the world. How was I making the world a better place, she wanted to know. After a moment of thought I told her I hoped I was changing people’s lives through my love of children’s books. She looked at me for a few seconds, nodded in agreement, and continued eating her cheese.
I spent sixteen years in education, first as a middle school reading teacher and then as an elementary librarian, with the goal of getting young people, their families, and my colleagues excited about books. I truly believe that strong literacy skills and a love of reading build a foundation for lifelong success (plus, reading is just plain fun). So when I was hired as a children’s specialist at Island Books I knew I wanted to figure out how to support educators in the work they do around literacy and fostering a love of reading in their students. Fortunately, Laurie and my new colleagues were completely on board and enthusiastically agreed to let me plan the bookstore’s first ever Back-to-School Educator Event. Cue the confetti!
If you are a K-12 educator I would LOVE to see you on August 18 at 11am to hear me rave about picture books, early readers, and chapter books that would make fabulous read-alouds for the start of the school year, as well as middle grade and young adult titles that lend themselves to literature circles and library collections. Several copies of each book will be available for purchase and, if we happen to run out of any titles, we will happily order them for you. Educators always receive a 20% discount on books purchased for their classroom or library.
Beyond booktalking approximately three million amazing titles, we’ll raffle off a TON of books, provide folks with a handy list of forthcoming fall titles to have on your radar, and serve coffee and treats. Those who purchase books can also enter a drawing for a tote bag full of books aimed at elementary, middle grade or young adult readers. Hope to see you there!

Heather Knight column: Learning to call in Hindi, World Cup stickers and Buckingham Palace
http://www.internetunleashed.co.uk/?p=28200 Heather Knight column: Learning to call in Hindi, World Cup stickers and Buckingham Palace - http://www.internetunleashed.co.uk/?p=28200 Kia Super League 2018Dates: 22 July - 27 AugustCoverage: Commentary on selected games on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra & BBC Local Radio, plus coverage on the BBC Sport websiteSuper Start to the Super LeagueThe third year of the Kia Super League kicked off last week, with a decent start from the Western Storm girls. It's great that the amount of games has doubled from last year and chatting to some of the other England girls, it really feels like the standard has gone up another level this year and not just from the international players. There have been some really good performances from some of the younger girls coming through and it's been great to see. Ellie Threlkeld at Lancashire Thunder was impressive last Friday, while Emma Lamb has bowled well up there and Sophia Dunkley at Surrey Stars has also performed well. Mandhana's first four innings for Western Storm were 48, 37, 52 not out and 43 not out - a strike rate of 206.89 runs per hundred ballsDown at Storm we've got quite a similar squad to last year but with a new overseas addition in India's Smriti Mandhana. Having never batted with Smriti before, I was in with her from the second ball of our first match against Yorkshire Diamonds.Mid-partnership, she told me she was struggling to call between the wickets in English, which as you can imagine may have been a slight issue, as my Hindi is pretty shady to say the least! So I asked her to teach me what 'yes' was in Hindi - 'Haan', apparently. Luckily it wasn't needed as she just kept whacking boundaries! Learning a new language out in the middle - one of the unique things about the KSL.We're on the road this week, fitting in Arundel, Old Trafford and Scarborough after hosting our first three games. We've really built a base and a following at our home venues of Taunton and Bristol, and come 2020 when the new competition starts, I really do hope we'll play some sort of domestic cricket there as the support for the women's game in the West Country has been brilliant. Before that though, we've got a competition to win. It's going to be a really tough ask to retain the title, but hopefully we can continue our good start and make it to Finals Day again.Coming home - with lessons for the Caribbean Katherine Brunt had a good summer with bat and ballLooking back on the international summer, it was a really positive one for us as a team.It was our first international cricket at home since that day at Lord's last summer and you could feel the support from the crowd. There were lots of outstanding individual performances, three series wins over South Africa and New Zealand, and a new T20 world record score to boot. The biggest win for me was our bowling. The standard of batting has gone to another level around the world and we challenged our bowlers to upskill, particularly on flat wickets. They were outstanding all summer, most notably our own Yin and Yang - the fierce and fiery Katherine Brunt and the slightly more studied Anya Shrubsole - leading the attack. If we're going to be successful this winter at the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, our bowling unit is going to be key. There were also some areas we know we need to improve on as a side. In our past two one-day internationals against New Zealand, we weren't able to punch out big enough totals on dry, slow wickets. It's never a bad thing when it becomes clear how you need to develop and adapting to different wickets, with the different island venues in the Caribbean, is something we're also going to need to do well come the World T20.'I've never seen a dot ball cheered so loudly' The first ODI against New Zealand at Headingley coincided with England's World Cup quarter-final win over SwedenThere were obviously some other important games for an England side going on out in Russia while our games were taking place - and we were definitely caught up in World Cup fever.Myself, Sarah Taylor and Danni Wyatt decided to relive our childhoods and get the World Cup sticker book going. Wyatt was definitely the most successful, purely by getting loads of free stickers from her social media following! Luckily she gave me her cast-offs.It also was slightly surreal playing our ODI against New Zealand at Headingley while the England v Sweden quarter-final was going on.Luckily the people of Yorkshire were particularly good at multi-tasking and managed to half-watch our game and half-watch the football. It was pretty obvious when the goals went in - I've never seen a dot ball cheered so loudly!A trip to the Palace and a spot of tennis Knight was appointed OBE in the New Year Honours, following England's World Cup success at Lord's last summerIn between the internationals, I headed to Buckingham Palace with my family to collect an OBE from Prince Charles. It was a very lovely day and - at times - very surreal! The loos gave me a little bit of a shock when I headed to the ladies, not your everyday toilets! It was a nice day to share with my mum, dad and brother as they've been such a massive part of getting me to where I am now. The toilets at Buckingham Palace are much smarter than those at your average cricket groundI was also lucky enough to head to Wimbledon. I was there for the first day of the tournament, which fortunately fell in the middle of our tour on one of our days off before the New Zealand series.Obviously tennis can only ever claim to be the second-best summer sport - it's obvious that cricket takes number one - but it was lovely to visit such a beautiful venue. I'm also hoping that the Super League schedule leaves enough time for me to get to the Hockey World Cup at some point over the next week.I'm keeping everything crossed for the England team. It would be amazing if they could get their hands on their World Cup as well - they deserve it. Source link

LANCASHIRE THUNDER 87 all out Hazell 37 Smith 3-16
SOUTHERN VIPERS 88 – 4 Wyatt 46 Ecclestone 2- 19
Lancashire Thunder saw their win less streak in the Kia Women’s Super League competition continue on, as the Thunder suffered yet another terrible batting collapse at home to the title chasing Southern Vipers in Liverpool, where the Thunder fell to a six wickets defeat to their opponents.
Before the start of play, their opponents the Southern Vipers had only suffered one defeat so far in the competition and that came this past Sunday against the leaders Surrey, to which it needed Duckworth/Lewis coming into play and have them losing out. For the Thunder, they have lost all their games in the competition so far, and have also really struggled massively for form with bat or ball from their side this year.
From the get-go, it saw the home side on the back foot almost immediately from the off and had the Vipers getting ready to strike at their wound opposition, as the innings seem to have the home side showing a lack of confidence. Lancashire lost opener Emma Lamb early on thanks to Linsey Smith clean bowling the youngster for 1, as the Vipers player would have an exceptional day with the ball.
England’s Sarah Taylor then came to the crease for the hosts but was soon heading back to the dugout after she hit a ball straight back to Windes International Hayley Matthews for one, which had the home side on 8-2.
New Zealander Amy Satterthwaite made a three ball duck to see the Thunder side three down, while Linsey Smith helped herself to her second wicket of the match. Smith would soon after pick up another wicket for her troubles, as she knocked over Eve Jones for 7 saw the hosts now 10-4 and in desperate trouble.
Australian Jess Jonassen and youngster Ellie Threlkeld then helped to put on a mini partnership to halt the collapse during the Lancashire Innings and have both steering the hosts past 30-4.
That mini revival didn’t last too long and saw Suzie Bates bowling Jonassen out for 11 and see the Thunder five down. Elle Threlkeld was next to go for Lancs, as she was run out for a stubborn score of 6 and have the scoreboard reading 31-6 and have the hosts in real danger of not making a half century.
Lancashire desperately needed a knock from someone in the middle order to just make it a fairly competitive contest, and up stepped the captain Danielle Hazell, as she tried to rally the Thunder with some brilliant shot making out in the middle. Sadly for her, she saw wickets tumble at the other end with Sophie Ecclestone and Natalie Brown both failing to score and seeing the Vipers putting on a clinic as the Lancashire Innings was coming to an end.
England’s Kate Cross then joined her skipper at the crease with the score at 57-8 and it would need a huge push by the two of them to help post anything that was relatively possible to defend against their opponents. Both batters played some good shots, with Hazell hitting a couple of big sixes and seeing Cross picking up a couple of handy boundaries along the way as the hosts looked to score as many as they could inside the final three overs.
At the start of the final over, it saw the Thunder captain looking to go big and throw the bat but her effort sadly came up short and had Tash Farrant picking up the wicket of Hazell, with Suzie Bates taking the catch to dismiss the England International for 37. Cross was the final wicket to fall in the Lancashire Innings, with the Lancashire pairing running in vain for an extra score to the total and see the England International run out for 19 and have the Thunder all out for a lowly 87.
Aigburth Cricket Ground, Liverpool
The Southern Vipers were set just 88 for victory and it seemed liked it was a pretty much cut and dried thing, with the Vipers seemingly just knocking the runs off quickly. As it was, the Thunder were determined to make it as hard for their opposition while it lasted and were keen to make amends for their poor batting display.
Lancashire started with Jess Jonassen and Sophie Ecclestone opening the bowling attack for the home side, with the hope that they could take an early wicket much like the Vipers had done against them. Sophie Ecclestone opened her spell with a wicket off the first ball, as Hayley Matthews could only loft it up in the air as far as Lea Tahuhu and the New Zealander took the catch to give the home side an early breakthrough.
Chester-born Ecclestone then struck again later in the over to claim her second wicket of the Innings, as the spinner bowled Georgia Adams out for a duck and see the Vipers not having it all their own way with the visitors 7-2.
However, Southern Vipers duo of Suzie Bates and Danni Wyatt then managed to get to grips with a low bouncing pitch and punish some poor deliveries at times at the crease too. The Australasian connection of Jess Jonassen and Amy Satterthwaite brought the Thunder a third wicket as a reward for plugging again, as Satterthwaite took the catch from a Suzie Bates shot and have the visitors 26-3.
South African Mignon du Preez then played a little cameo Innings for the Vipers before Danielle Hazell bowled her out for 9 and have the visiting side 41-4, with the visitors needing another 47 runs for victory. Lancashire used an entire bowling attack mainly made up of spin, as the quickies were getting much out of the pitch and the Thunder side chose to use spin as their form of attack against their opposition.
Vipers Danni Wyatt proved to be the match winner in the game with the England International finishing on 46 not out and see both her and teammate Arran Brindle who finished on 19 unbeaten too, as the Southern Vipers eased to victory by six wickets and qualify for Finals day. This defeat was the fourth straight loss in this year’s competition and see their winless streak moving to seven in a row, with the Thunder’s last win coming against Loughborough in last season’s competition.
Lancashire still have one more game left to play in 2017 tournament, as the side travel down to Bristol to face the Western Storm on Saturday and will be playing for pride and also hope to a build on a battling effort with the ball.

Sarah: A New Bookseller Appears!!
I’ve been a reader for as long as I can remember. I have wonderful memories of visiting the old downtown Bellevue Library on Main Street, signing up for the annual summer reading program at the Eastgate KCLS branch, and running my fingers along the spines of books at the University Bookstore whenever my family ate out at the nearby Azteca restaurant. My mom almost always bought me the latest Baby Sitter’s Club or Sweet Valley Twins book. I was such a devoted reader that I used to force my friends to lounge under our family’s ping-pong table and listen to me read aloud some of my favorite novels, including Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, and Wendy and the Bullies. It was a surprise to no one when I became a 6th grade reading teacher and then an elementary librarian!
In late 2020, deciding I needed a break from education, I applied to the Master’s in Children’s Literature program at Simmons University, not knowing where it would lead me, but excited by the prospect of a grand adventure. In July of 2021 my husband, daughter, dog and I moved across the country to Newton, MA so I could study children’s literature and, while I am so grateful for everything I learned and all the fabulous people we met, I can’t wait to be back in the Pacific Northwest, especially because I’ll be working at Island Books! I have always wanted to work at an independent bookstore, so having an opportunity to grow the children’s department, connect readers with books, and meet even more people who are passionate about kidlit is beyond exciting.
I love all kinds of kids' books, from picture books to young adult novels, but I gravitate toward middle grade stories. I even produce the Happy Reading podcast, which spotlights middle grade books by topic. Some of my all-time favorite books include The Westing Game, the Vanderbeekers series, Boy Meets Boy, and Should I Share My Ice Cream? (an Elephant & Piggie book). Some more recent five-star reads include The Mona Lisa Vanishes, The First State of Being, The Color of Sound, and Dear Mr. G (I’m a sucker for picture books that make me cry).
When I’m not reading or browsing the shelves at my local library or bookstore, I also enjoy crocheting (I taught myself a few weeks ago and love it), baking, building with LEGO, planning our next Disney vacation, walking our adorable dog Jefferson, and watching movies with my family while snuggled up on the couch.
I can’t wait to start the next chapter of my life at Island Books!
