Decorative Sunday
In Praise of Patterned Papers was printed in an edition 360 copies by Graham Moss at his Incline Press in Oldham, England in 1997. It includes dozens of paper samples and a collection of essays by noted British designers and patterned-paper experts Tanya Schmoller, Paul Nash, Phyllis Barron, Enid Marx, Alan Powers, Sebastian Carter, Victoria Hall, and Graham Moss himself. Moss writes:
What you have here is a guide book rather than an encyclopaedia, not a study so much as an exuberance. . . . Patterned paper is a particular type of decorated paper, and has as many uses as you might put it to. The main emphasis of this collection of essays is to take a look at its use as a book covering, with a little but the occasional turn of the head to look at other decorated papers used in bindings.
The patterns shown here are by Sarah Nechamkin, Hans Schmoller, Edward Bawden, Enid Marx, and Robert Simon.

Patterned Papers Hans Schmoller, Penguin Books & The Curwen Press A selection of the Penguin Music Scores I’ve finally unearthed from boxes.Schmoller joined Penguin from the Curwen Press and unsurprisingly settled on using some of the Curwen patterns for the new series of music scores. What is less known is that he commissioned a series of new patterned papers from the likes of Elizabeth Friedlander, Stephen Russ, Sarah Nechamkin and others. Along with Tanya Schmoller they were the leading collectors of early patterned papers, traveling the world in search of unusual patterned papers amassing a wonderful collection, now at Manchester Met. #hansschmoller #tanyaschmoller #penguinmusicscores #penguinpiets #curwenpress #patternedpaper #surfacedesign @penguinukbooks @penguincollsoc https://www.instagram.com/p/BqHQbF_Aaee/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19j7khcg2qv9a

California homeowners win the battle against manufacturers that sold them lead paint; the Russian Orthodox Church splits from Constantinople.
Andrew Caballero-Reynolds/AFP/Getty Images
The Supreme Court declined Monday to hear an appeal from paint manufacturers that have been required to pay more than $400 million to fund the removal of lead paint from California homes, leaving a state court ruling requiring the cleanup in place. [AP]
The long-running litigation began as a product liability lawsuit in 2000, when homeowners in areas including Los Angeles County and the city of San Diego said residual lead contributed to severe health problems in children. To date, more than 2,000 children have tested positive for lead in their bloodstream in LA County. [LA Times / Michael Hiltzik]
The lawsuit was refiled as a public nuisance lawsuit in 2011. Sherwin-Williams argued that “pegging public nuisance liability to prior product promotion offers a tempting, facile way to shift responsibility from government policymakers and budgets onto corporations.” [Bloomberg / Greg Stohr]
Business groups urged the Supreme Court to take up the appeal and overturn the ruling requiring the paint companies to pay for cleanup. [SCOTUSblog]
Similar cases have been brought up elsewhere in the US — notably in Rhode Island and New Jersey — against paint manufacturers. [Reuters / Lawrence Hurley]
The cleanup matters because lead in the environment has long-term effects on children’s development, causing cognitive damage that can last for decades. [NPR / Rae Ellen Bichell]

The Russian Orthodox Church severed ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate on Monday, in what many consider to be the biggest split in Orthodox Christianity since the Great Schism of 1054 between Eastern and Western churches. [NYT / Neil MacFarquhar]
Russia’s move came a few days after leaders in Constantinople, the “first among equals” and leading authority of the Orthodox religion, recognized the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as independent. [RT]
Although most clerics in Ukraine pledge loyalty to the Russian church, Moscow fears they will soon switch allegiance to the new independent religious body. [AFP]
The decision means that Russia and Constantinople will no longer be able to worship or perform ceremonies together. Additionally, Russian followers cannot participate in Eucharistic communion at unaffiliated churches or go to Mount Athos in Greece, the center of Eastern Orthodox monasticism. [Meduza]
Constantinople holds near-unprecedented influence in the religious community, with more than 300 million Orthodox followers around the world. The Moscow Patriarchate had 150 million members as of 2011. [BBC]

India’s Supreme Court moved to decriminalize gay sex on Thursday. With an estimated population of 78 million queer people, this is the “biggest decriminalization verdict in history.” [Gay Star News / Shannon Power and Rik Glauert]
The five judges voted to overrule Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a 157-year-old statute that deemed gay sex illegal and a punishable offense. The Supreme Court justified the ruling as an interpretation “per the requirement of changing times.” [Times of India]
Gay sex was initially decriminalized in 2009 by the Delhi High Court, but that ruling was quickly overturned by the Supreme Court. Decriminalization efforts returned to the court system this year. [The Cut / Sarah Nechamkin]
The fight for gay rights in India is far from over, however. Gay marriage is still illegal and gay couples cannot adopt children together or inherit one another’s property. [LA Times / Shashank Bengali and Niha Masih]

Nicholas Slatten, the security guard, was allegedly involved in 2007’s shooting in Baghdad’s Nisour Square. The incident killed 14 unarmed Iraqi civilians and wounded 17 others. [USA Today / Michael Collins]
Slatten was accused of murder, and three other fellow guards for Blackwater, an infamous private security company that was hired by the government in 2004, were convicted of manslaughter charges. [BBC]
The alleged murders sparked outrage from diplomats and humanitarians around the globe. It also propelled efforts to end the use of private military services, though nothing has changed yet. [Washington Post / Spencer S. Hsu]
Slatten was previously convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life, but judges from a federal appeals court overturned the decision and called for a retrial. [CNN / Zachary Cohen and Laura Jarrett]
Prosecutors now have to decide if they will retry Slatten for a third time. They will grapple with whether this third try “is the charm” or if “justice pursued for too long become[s] injustice — or simply pointless.” [Above the Law / Justin Dillon]
