Trying to tease out why QAnon types target something/someone is pointless bc while they do have a motive, the way new targets get folded onto their enemies list is completely scattershot

Leaked Clinton campaign emails included an invitation to dinner with Marina Abramović; she called the dinner "spirit cooking" after a performance art piece of hers. And so Marina Abramović became a key part of the conspiracy, and "spirit cooking" became a phrase to look out for. Then they found emails mentioning events at a popular pizza place in DC. A trendy restaurant in Washington DC was hosting campaign events and had people who work in politics eating there, so it was now part of the conspiracy, and so was anyone associated with it, and so a bunch of people ended up on the enemies list for referencing pizza once. But that history ignores the first step: that the claim took off on imageboards that already used "cheese pizza" as a wacky euphemism for CSAM, so it was natural for them to assume their inane imageboard lingo was actually a thing in the real world, too

It's just an expansive version of the Clinton murder list from the 90s, as in it literally includes the Clinton murder list, which was a list of names of people associated with the Clintons who died, a list that expanded to include random murders in Little Rock & describe someone's death in a plane crash as mysterious even though "a single-engine plane crashed while flying through the mountains in low visibility" is one of the least mysterious ways someone can die

If you're curious why this list doesn't explain how Bill and Hillary could order the deaths of dozens connected to them, but couldn't silence Monica Lewinsky, it kinda does explain that. See, before the Lewinsky story broke, a reporter supposedly dropped the hint that an intern "whose name started with the letter 'M'" would speak out against Clinton. Which is an BONKERS thing for a reporter to do, what the FUCK, and I wouldn't believe it if it wasn't attested to by sources like Snopes (from when it was good), but around the same time, in July 1997, a former White House intern named Mary Mahoney was manager of a D.C. Starbucks that was robbed; the robbery went bad, and Mahoney and two other employees were sadly murdered. The case was strange - the robber left without taking anything - but just a coincidence.

Because, among other things, unlike Lewinsky, Mahoney didn't work directly with Clinton, but was mainly an intern for Doris Matsui, wife of representative Bob Matsui (Bob would die in 2005 and Doris would run for his seat and win, she's still in Congress to this day) who served in the White House as a liaison to Asian-Americans. But also: the Lewinsky story dropped in early 1998, revealing that the hint had never been about Mahoney. But they couldn't just remove her from the list, which can only ever grow, so they came up with explanations of how she was also going to testify against Clinton, or that the Clinton's hitmen were just making their way through all interns whose names started with M like the Terminator going through every Sarah Connor. But like. The hint dropped in mid-1997, and because Newsweek sat on the story the story wouldn't be exposed until January 1998. I guess the Clintons took out one intern and just? Gave up? I mean the Tamagotchi was out in America by then so maybe they got distracted

And so an outdated hint about Monica Lewinsky just kind of carries on, as they continually update the list, and as it expanded from "the Clintons are secretly murdering their rivals!" to "the Clintons are part of a worldwide Satanic cult". Their whole mythology is like this, just random junk they grabbed for reasons nobody remembers, but that must be part of the mythos forever, and which they're willing to literally do crimes over it

Ugh, thank you. Honestly, I really find the way Hollywood writes modern female characters to be kind of incredibly insulting. It's really depressing that characters have to either be a girlboss who is just magically strong/competent, a huge asshole who browbeats and snarks her way through the plot without a shred of kindness or empathy for the other characters, or just a general mary sue-esque character who doesn't go through an actual arc.

Female characters can be vulnerable. Shy. Terrified. They can be sexy. Or even display softer, more traditionally feminine traits while still serving a role in the story. They can be tough and no-nonsense while still expressing a sense of warmth or protectiveness. They can be thrown around like a ragdoll while STILL getting up to meet the challenge. They can fail. They can make intentionally incompetent decisions. They can be in the wrong. They can be cocky. They can be silly or positive or--gasp--WEAK. Idk but if we really want to start "seeing ourselves" in characters like they're always talking about, the first thing to do is to actually write female characters in a way that actually feels compelling. Which means writing characters with actual flaws and weaknesses to overcome.

I really hope we're moving out of this girlboss trend. Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, and Buffy Summers weren't great because they were girlbosses. They were great because they were layered characters that went through hell and came out the other side a stronger person. And that's so much more impactful to me.

The One that Becomes Queernormative is A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows

Protagonist starts off in a queer phobic society and is bound to marry a girl from the neighboring kingdom against his wishes, being gay. When his sexuality is dramatically revealed after he's being assaulted, the political bets seem off, but the other kingdom is queernormative and instead offers to marry him to his bride's brother instead.

The One with Sisters and Unsuitable Men is An Earthly Knight by Janet McNaughto

The main character's older sister has run away with an unsuitable man so it's up to her to marry a suitable one. But as she worries for her sister and hopes to find her, she encounters a strange man, rumored to have been kidnapped by the fae.

The One with the Magic Italian Notebook is City of Masks by Mary Hoffman

The main character, a young boy, is seriously ill but his life is transformed when an old Italian notebook gives him the power to become a stravagante, a time traveler with access to 16th century Italy. Fantastic capture of this incredibly immersive and beautiful production. there is a bar in the bottom right corner of the screen that doesn't take away except for one moment where Gandalf and Frodo are talking on the stairs in act one, but overall I worked around it and you can always see Frodo and sometimes Gandalf. At points people are in the audience and I wasn't able to capture them but you can always hear them and I do my best to always try to make sure to capture anything in the audience that I could. Some washout and shakiness throughout.

20 Questions for Fic Writers Tag Game

@whetstonefires tagged me! 17 was missing, and I searched for the meme and found one that had a question 17, so it's back!

1. how many works do you have on AO3?

256! But that's going back 18 years, so it's an average of a little over 14 fics per year.

2. what’s your total AO3 word count?

1,245,329. Which works out to an average of 4900 words per fic, or 69k words/year. Respectable, solid, but I know a lot of people who've written more.

Oh! But there are a couple of podfics in there, which probably skews the words-per-work a bit.

3. what fandoms do you write for?

Uh. A quick count gives me 112 fandoms on my AO3 page, so ... a lot. I regularly write for Yuletide, and I'm polyfannish, so. A lot. I used to be big into Stargate SG-1, so I've written a lot of that but not recently. Other top fandoms include Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, various DC fandoms, various Star Trek and Star Wars fandoms, Babylon 5, Terminator (especially the Sarah Connor Chronicles), the Vorkosiverse, the Goblin Emperor, and Rivers of London.

4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Past Lives (a stalled WIP that is a Star Wars time travel fixit starring Finn)

Lieutenant Bennet's Visit (Temeraire/P&P with Bennet as an aviator)

Darcy's Surprise (sequel to the above fic)

Revenge of the Zillo Beast (Star Wars, Anakin-and-Mace-Windu Groundhog Day AU)

5. do you respond to comments?

Yup! Or, at least, the ones that are more than an emoji or "second kudos!" I value those too, it's just ... what would I say?

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't tend to go in for angsty endings. But, as it happens, I did write an ending lately that was fairly dark.

Fertile Ground, Battlestar Galactica, Simon only bothered to continue the fertility experiments because the others demanded it. Things are different on New Caprica. Warnings for canon-typical ... everything

7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

How would one even judge? I have 256 fics, most of which have positive endings of one sort or another.

8. do you get hate on fics?

Not really? Or, at least, it's probably happened sometime in the last 18 years, but I just deleted it and forgot about it. I am very lucky, I know other writers who've gone through hell.

9. do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Nope!

10. do you write crossovers?

I love crossovers! AO3 thinks I have 38, but a few of those aren't really crossovers, just different corners of the same universe, and one of them is the work that combines most of my Twisting the Hellmouth crossover drabbles into one drabble collection. (The ones where I had several drabbles in a sequence to tell a longer story, I separated out to each be their own fic.) Anyway, it averages out to about two a year, although I have not written as many in the last few years as I did earlier in my fic writing career. Most recently, I have:

Oh, sure, there have been a couple of times people have put some of my fics on those skeevy for-profit websites that pop up every now and again.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! Twice! Both times into Russian. Though oddly enough, none of my Vorkosiverse fics have been translated into Russian. There is a very large and active Russian fandom for the Vorkosigan saga, so if I were going to predict which of my fics would be translated into Russian, it would be those. But no, the two that were translated are a DS9 fic, and a Doctor Who/Mary Poppins crossover.

Nope!

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

That's tough to answer. Does it include the ones that I abandoned, say, 15 years ago and haven't thought of since? I don't tend to post WIPs because I don't like them hanging over me.

Probably Hello, Piccadilly, Hello, Leicester Square, a Wonder Woman post-movie fic about Diana trying to figure out how to live in Man's World. I had a really great hook--they pass Diana off as a war bride--but no real idea where to go from there. Which is why it stalled out after only two chapters.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Worldbuilding, probably.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Endings and action. I am not good at writing either of them. The thing I am most likely to need a beta's help with is whether or not an ending feels like an ending or if I need to wrap things up better, and if so, what do I need to do to wrap things up. And action bores me, and it's really hard to write something that bores you, so I try to avoid needing to write it.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don't speak any other languages, so I wouldn't do it! Unless maybe I had someone who had already volunteered to translate for me.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Stargate SG-1! It was a spitefic that I wrote because I was so annoyed by all the Broca AUs. "The Broca Divide" was an episode where they all turn into cavepeople, and as part of it Sam Carter kisses her commanding officer, Jack O'Neill, who then takes her to the infirmary before succumbing to the infection himself. There were a ton of fics about that where they have sex instead and she gets pregnant, and afterwards she keeps the baby and they get married and everything is fine and the team stays together and nobody cares about fraternization or anything.

(There were a LOT of Sam/Jack fics out there where like the President or whoever would call them up and say "oh, you're in love? awesome! we'll just waive all the regulations about having a romantic relationship with someone in your chain of command because you're so extra special and awesome. Which really annoyed me.)

Anyway, I got annoyed enough to write a fic where they sleep together as cavepeople and she gets pregnant and things are not fine, actually, there are consequences to it.

The results are in! Broadway.com readers have selected the nominees for the 2025 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards, the only major theatrical awards where the nominating jury and voting committee is made up entirely of regular Broadway fans. Now it's time to scan the list and vote for who you want to take home the trophies. 

Maybe Happy Ending leads the field with 15 nominations, including four nominations for each of its stars, Darren Criss and Helen J Shen. Their castmates Dez Duron and Marcus Choi also earned nominations (two for Duron and one for Choi). Death Becomes Her is another major contender with 12 nominations, followed by Cole Escola's hit comedy Oh, Mary! with a total of nine nominations. Escola alone earned five nominations, tying with Death Becomes Her's Megan Hilty for the most nominations earned by a single individual. Sam Gold's fall revival of Romeo + Juliet, starring Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, is also a popular production, earning nine nominations, closely followed by Sunset Boulevard with eight nominations.  

Voting is open now through Friday, May 9 at 11:59 PM ET. Winners will be announced the week of May 12, and the Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards celebration will take place on May 29.
