WEITZEIL LEADS BEARS TO RECORD NIGHT
Junior Sets Pac-12 Mark In 100 Free, Anchors 400 Free Relay To NCAA Record
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Cal put a firm stamp on its performance in the final event at the Pac-12 Championships Saturday night, swimming away with the 400 free relay in an NCAA-record time of 3:07.41. The result meant Bears swept all five relays at the meet for the first time ever.  It also assured Cal a second place finish in the Championships. Leading the way individually for the Golden Bears was junior Abbey Weitzeil, who lowered the Pac-12 meet record and her own Cal school record in the 100 free when she touched in 46.35. The victory added to her individual wins in the 50 free and 200 free earlier in the meet, and she was named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Meet for her efforts. "I feel we are in a really good place," head coach Teri McKeever said. "We now need to refocus, stay healthy and see what we can do in a couple of weeks at NCAAs. It's going to be exciting." In the 100 free, Weitzeil rushed out to the lead and never looked back, finishing in 46.35. Her time, which stands at the fastest in the country this year, broke the meet record of 46.36 by Stanford's Simone Manuel in 2017. And, as the Golden Bears did in the 200 free final Friday, they swept the top three positions in the 100 free. Right behind Weitzeil was senior Amy Bilquist, who raced to a personal-best 47.01, while sophomore Robin Neumann was third in a PR 47.78. Cal picked up its ninth and final event title of the championships in the 400 free relay. Neumann led off and was followed by Katie McLaughlin, Bilquist and Weitzeil. By the time the Bears reached the final wall, they had broken the NCAA and U.S. Open mark of 3:07.61 set by Stanford in 2017. In the 200 backstroke, junior Keaton Blovad lowered her time to 1:51.73 to place fifth and put herself sixth on Cal's all-time list in the event. Freshman Alicia Wilson also reached the A final and took eighth in 1:55.11, with sophomore Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou earning the B final victory (9th overall) in 1:55.05. Freshman Ema Rajic claimed victory in the B final of the 200 breaststroke, moving up to fifth all-time at Cal in 2:10.47. Sophomore Sarah Darcel led the Bears in the 200 butterfly, touching fifth in 1:55.55, and Cassidy Bayer joined her in the A final and placed seventh in 1:56.12. In platform diving, sophomore Briana Thai led the Cal contingent with a 13th-place showing.
Cal's nine event victories came in all five relays – 200, 400 and 800 free relay, 200 and 400 medley relay – along with individual wins by Weitzeil (50, 100 and 200 free) and Bilquist (100 back). Stanford earned the team title with 1,775 points, with Cal taking second with 1,352 points. USC was third (1,183.5), with Arizona State (932.5) and Arizona (837) rounding out the top five. Cal returns to action March 20-23 at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. The Bears have finished among the top three at the national meet each of the past 10 years – the longest current streak in the country.

The Spirit of Colette Is Coming to IKEA—Along With LEGO and Adidas
IKEA’s iconic blue bag is getting a new look thanks to a collaboration that celebrates the late, great French retailer Colette, which closed its doors last December.
The Swedish furniture giant is partnering with Sarah Andelman, the co-founder and former creative director of the influential Parisian fashion concept store, along with her longtime collaborator: Craig Redman, creator of Darcel Disappoints, a colorful egg-shaped character who serves as his alter-ego and observes life in New York.
Their FÖRNYAD (which means ‘Renewed’ in English) collection offers a splash of colors and optimism. It features notebooks, stationery, desks, stools, rugs and the iconic IKEA blue bag.
The collection reimagines some iconic IKEA pieces, such as the LACK table, and meshes IKEA’s iconic blue with Colette’s signature dots and Redman’s egg-shaped black eye.
As IKEA notes, “FÖRNYAD may have been designed with students in mind, but age doesn’t come into it— (it’s) for everyone who wants to add some fun to everyday life. Pattern play, unexpected colours and sizes, and a few quirky surprises get the job done.”
The new pattern is called ‘Tuileries’ in honor of the Parisian park. “We’ve mixed graphics of park life with the Colette blue dots and Darcel iconography,” stated IKEA creative leader Henrik Most.

One of the World’s Oldest Drag Queens Shares Memories of Life in Toronto in the 1950s
On Tuesday nights, if you’re playing Ghetto Glam Bingo at Pegasus Bar on Toronto’s Church Street, you’re likely to catch the floral scent of Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds fragrance before you spot the Bette Davis-esque blonde wig that belongs to one of the bar’s most iconic visitors: Russell Alldread.
At 88, Alldread—better known by his drag persona Michelle DuBarry—is Canada’s oldest drag queen. He even held the title of World’s Oldest Performing Drag Queen for a brief period (awarded by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2015) but has since been dethroned by Walter “Darcelle XV” Cole in Oregon, who’s one year older. “He wasn’t that terrific looking actually,” Russell counters with a chuckle, when I sit down with him earlier this month.
Dressed in cargo shorts and a colourful printed shirt, Russell passes as a sweet old gentleman until you notice a few tell-tale signs courtesy of his other persona. One being the pearly white dental plates and the other, his long, perfectly manicured talons. “They’re for scratching backs —and balls.”
Born in 1931 in Bowmanville, Ontario, Russell moved to Toronto’s Gay Village at the age of twenty-one and never left (aside from a brief stint when he left and married a woman). “We had a church wedding in my home in Bowmanville, with my mother and her mother in the front row, but that was short lived.”
Read on for our Q&A (and bonus video interview!) with Russell.
What was it like growing up in Ontario in the ’40s? Did you know you were gay?
Oh no, gay wasn’t a word. No such thing. You were a faggot or a queer or a sissy. In high school another guy and I decided to dress up like two French dancers at the high school masquerade. We didn’t think it was drag, we were dressing up in a costume. And we went to the dance and this fifth form student asked me to dance. And his brother who was in my form went up to him and said, “That’s a guy, you know.” And he disappeared.
I used to get sunbathing magazines and look for nude people. But of course, everything was blocked out then. I would draw male and female figures, cut them out and make clothes for them. I didn’t really think about it then.
And you moved to Toronto in your twenties?
Yes. I came to the village and I found a place to live in a brick building next to what is now the Garage. And I got a job at Canadian Fairbanks-Morse in the mailroom. At twenty-one I was kind of a cute kid, anyways that’s what they told me. And there was an older man in the mailroom who was gay. I mean, gay wasn’t the word then, he was queer, and he had a little apartment full of music and books and everything and so I dropped by and he didn’t come on to me at all. But he had a young chap visiting him from Ottawa, a gorgeous young boy. And so I ended up in a hotel room in the pub and really all over town with the young boy. Well he was the same age as I was, I guess. And anyway, that was quite a day. We had a bath in the bathtub and then we sat naked in a big chair and it was a lovely night.
When did drag come on the scene in Toronto?
Well in the ’50s Sarah Dunlop, a lesbian, had a private little place for three men that were doing shows in suit and tie with a rose in the lapel. She had to have someone watching the door to make sure the people that came in were people that she knew because it was against the law in the ’50s. So, I used to watch these three guys doing their number. And Murray Burbage, a very talented young man who was sewing clothes for young girls’ skate skating groups, etcetera, decided to put them in women’s clothing. That was the beginning of men dressing up.
What about Michelle, when did she come on to the scene?
The name Michelle DuBarry came much later but I used to get dressed up and go out long before. Drag was very different back then. We weren’t trying to be larger than life, we looked like women.
There was one night I got dressed up with my blonde hair and a little black dress and I went over and walked down Yonge Street and nobody knew anything. They didn’t know I was a man. I went into the downtown theatre and watched a movie. On my way out I tripped on the steps and fell down the stairs, and this guy at the bottom of the steps said to me, ‘Here’s your shoe lady.’ And I grabbed it and limped home.
I’m sure it wasn’t all easy though.
No, but I don’t usually think on that. I mean there was a Halloween night in the ’50s. Thousands of people were cramming the streets and yelling, “Look at the queers.’ And I’m going through in a lovely red dress and I had ink thrown at me, and I went home and changed, and came back out again. Nothing’s going to stop me from doing it. It was quite a night. Quite a wonderful Halloween night.
Do you have any advice for drag queens today?
Oh no. They’re doing what they want to do and looking how they want to look and my god, there’s so many of them that are looking utterly fantastic. They’re not looking for my advice. I’m someone they admire. They respect me. And that’s good. I cut the ribbon on World Pride a couple years ago. It’s nice to be respected.
Any secrets to your longevity?
No. I live one day at a time. I can’t live for tomorrow and thank God I can still put myself together.

Pac-12 Champs Times 2
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Second-ranked Cal got the Pac-12 Championships off to a flying start, winning the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard free relay on the opening night of the meet.
The Golden Bears, defending Pac-12 champs, posted best-in-the-nation times in both events and set a Pac-12 meet record in the 200 medley relay. As a result, Cal has 128 points through two races, with Stanford second at 112 and USC third at 108.
The Bears led from the start in the 200 medley relay with Kathleen Baker putting Cal in front after her backstroke leg. Cal continued to extend its advantage over runner-up Stanford through Abbey Weitzeil's breaststroke and Noemie Thomas' butterfly. Amy Bilquist reached the wall in 1:34.13, beating arch rival Stanford yet again.
The time was just off the NCAA mark of 1:34.10 set by Cal at last year's meet when the Bears captured the national championship.
"It feels really good. We up here to race and have fun," Weitzeil, the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month, said. "Leading off with a win is always fun. Keeping the energy up and keeping the ball rolling is really what we need as a team."
A few minutes later, the Bears swam to victory in the 800 free relay. Robin Neumann led off in 1:43.38 on her opening leg, before handing off to Baker and then Katie McLaughlin, who edged Cal to the front through 600 yards. Bilquist, again on anchor, closed out the relay in 6:52.62, as she held off a fast-charging Katie Ledecky of Stanford, who touched in 6:53.86.
"It was a really great night for us, and I'm really proud of how we performed," head coach Teri McKeever said. "We had amazing swimming on the B relays, as well, which got the team in good spirits. We're off to a good start and we're excited to keep it rolling."
In addition to the two wins, Cal's B relays both posted fast times, including the 200 medley relay of Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou, Ali Harrison, McLaughlin and Maddie Murphy that finished in 1:36.36, which was below the NCAA "A" qualifying standard. The foursome of Chenoa Devine, Keaton Blovad, Sarah Darcel and Jenna Campbell were timed in 7:04.52 in the 800 free relay.
The Bears consider this meet a tune-up to their eventual goal of bringing home another NCAA Championship trophy.  Cal has won four times since 2009, more than any other school, and came in second last year.
